You asked so here it is! I've broken down exactly what it costs me to live in my tiny house on wheels in Alberta, Canada. It might shock you to learn what my expenses are. Living legally in a big city can get surprisingly expensive!

I found this very interesting. Hopefully when you move to BC your parking fees will be lower. Honestly this is the nicest, most well planned, tiny house I’ve ever seen.

I agree and I think it’s because it feels more like a true representation of a real home, but in a smaller scale/size. Plus, it’s nice living room, full size kitchen, & bedroom feel like you’re in a normal home without having to sacrifice so much. She really researched, studied, & learned exactly what she wanted & it shows! It’s lovely!!

Oh wow 20,000. Unbelievable, in Tennessee you could get at least 1/2 or more less even with delivery extra. But you love your home. Air exchange in TN is 2,000, but you happy with what you have. Smart of using best for moisture. If we’re me I would have Bamboo for shower bathroom trim and have tile! Anything to prevent mold. Wow 800 plus! There is a Tiny Home Community here right by Great Smoky Mountains. Utilities are about $50 total. Ponds on Property, mile walk around property is a mile. Fenced Dog Park for 3 size dogs. Gathering Building for all people on sight. 3 different communities with Theme. Grape vines planted, fruit trees. 200 a month. Gravel road an 2 car parking each home within Forest. The other communities are overlooking Large Pond. Newest Community across road is 185 acres on mountain Property. It’s 1 1/2 mile to grocery stores, banks, restaurants, stores to small town of 35,000. Oh rent on Mt Property is $300 but land is twice as big or more than others. Views magnificent. Trails to bird watch. Lake borders part of that property. BUT it’s in Tennessee USA. There is no State Tax in Tennessee. Average temp is 65 to 75… seasonal rain as it’s in Mountains. 3 major airports within hour to hour an half. Just to show you differences. Many retirees. More women but still many men an couples. Since community new most residents are from all over United States which makes it interesting. Lots Festivals in State and nearby North Carolina. Getting to beach would be 4/6 hours but many many lakes, waterfall streams, State Parks, Rafting Stream an fishing. 😊😊
That was very interesting. In my head, having built 3 of my own homes, and seeing the tour of your home , I would have guessed $150,000! Not building it yourself, yet being the chief designer😁👍-- the quality certainly speaks to the cost! The many items you discuss show that a great deal of thought went into your design--perfect job!😊👌

Yes, Canada is expensive to live in but as a Canadian I wouldn't trade living here for anywhere else in the world. I know my children and grandchildren are safe and happy and that's important.

You should try living in Australia. The cost of this tiny would cost waaaaay more to build here.
Pretty expensive, but I see it has pretty much everything. Love it.
Every tiny house is different. A friend has a similar size and total cost was $26k and $8k for land.
Could you do a video about the plumbing and sewage set up with your house in a cold climate? A lot of videos are of houses in season less climates, so I'm curious what needs to be considered for cold weather tiny living.

You were so smart to do as much research as you did. It's so much better to spend the money up front so that you can be confident in the structure and long term viability of your home and it's workings. Whenever I've had a house built, I tell the builder, you make it safe, warm, sturdy and strong...I'll take care of the pretty. Way to go gurl!
Those fees and bullsh*t other charges are insane! This is why off grid is what I want to do. But of course, municipalities need to make money stand in the way! It heartbreaking. Thanks for sharing.

WOW! That’s a lot! The 1200 sq ft home I purchased in 2018 that came with a quarter acre of property cost me $130k ...I’m in the US 45 miles outside of New York City...no parking spot needed... but I do pay taxes which probably coincides with that give or take,,, my utilities aren’t any more than yours...I’m totally flabbergasted that it cost that much for a tiny house...my thoughts before watching this was a tiny house would be much less.. thanks for the insight! in any case love your Tiny Home
Keep in mind that I’m in Canada. Most homes you see in TV are self built and often use recycled materials.
@@myBIGtinyhouselife yes I knew you were in Canada... I wasn’t comparing it to other Tiny houses... I’m in NJ in the U.S. and in one of the more expensive States for housing.. I was lucky to find this at this price...I’m not even certain Tiny homes are allowed here with all of our ordinances.. I never really looked into pricing of a tiny home or purchasing one...it was just my assumption tiny homes would be much less expensive than traditional homes as a more cost effective option. As well as the fact that they are smaller and not having to purchase the property as well ... I downsized as well and am loving a smaller space...it’s all I need and most likely a bit more lol... but I also wanted a bit of extra room for guests as I enjoy family visits from out of state. I do envy your ability to pull up anchor and move about should you choose. I think I’ve done my share of moving though. Im here now until I hit the nursing home! Lol... Calgary really needs to look at changing regulations to allow more tiny houses, it is unfortunate they are so behind the times. I think there are many people that this kind of living appeals to, but zoning is such an issue. I read it is pretty much the same as when it was 'revised' in the 1980's...
Just found your channel. Love your tiny house and your channel, the info you share is so helpful. I am in Ontario, Toronto and I might start looking at a tiny house soon. It's not exactly cheap to live tiny...guess the best will be to buy land somewhere, maybe.

It is crazy how much the utility companies charge with all those fees I agree! My electric bill averages $35 a month and $20 of that is just to have it on, lol...nuts!!! Would love to have a house with solar and get off grid as much as possible, I Live in Chicago, but goal is to move to warmer climate too, cannot stand cold winters anymore.
Thank you for being so forthcoming with your expenses. It is extremely helpful to have some idea of all the costs associated with tiny house living - even though I am only just starting to consider it. Also, it's great to hear that you don't use your dryer that much. I'm fortunate to live in the country and I use a clothesline all the time, even though I do have an electric dryer (currently broken, but very low priority to fix). I love the task of hanging out laundry, and the way the clothes smell and feel when dry. In winter, if it is not good weather outside, I have two clotheslines across the rafters in my basement, and I just hang my clothes there. They are typically dry in a day. I really like the idea of being environmentally responsible and saving the cost of electric by useing clotheslines. Thanks so much for your videos, they are very inspiring and also calming for me. Thank you so much, this is very helpful in my long term planning. My reaction to the costs :) the build cost seems reasonable but the monthly costs caught me by surprise because I hadn’t thought of all those things so good to take that in to consideration.

Great nuts and bolts video! Like many others, I have been following the tiny movement for years. There are many that show how to build on a budget, but not everybody has carpentry skills and friends with land. There are benefits to a tiny lifestyle that can't be measured in money.😊
I remember those ridiculously high fees that the gas and hydro companies charged in Calgary. When I moved to BC I couldn't believe how much cheaper my hydro bills were.

The actual usage of your gas and electricity compared to the bill totals was amazing. Quite the differences. I was surprised to hear what your lot is costing, but I am unfamiliar with Canadian real estate. Your house is really lovely.

I am so happy I found your channel! I live in Edmonton AB, and it is so difficult to find people who have built tiny homes (specifically on wheels) in this area! Living in Canada we have so many more things to consider when building, and I rarely hear people talk about the moisture/air quality concern, which can be a huge issue for us here! I am hoping to start my build sometime next year, and your channel is filled with so much valuable information for building here. Edmonton has legalized tiny house dwellings on foundations now, and I am waiting patiently for tiny houses on wheels to be legalized as well, hopefully soon!

Thanks Sam! I’m so glad you are finding it useful. My furnace is a RV size forced air. Going into my second winter and it’s worked great so far even in the coldest months. I think a forced air furnace also helps to keep moisture down.

Well done. I would still love the gooseneck, build a garage under it and hopefully it would be in a permanent place, I would not need a trailer? 12×37 is perfect size as Lord have mercy I was married for 37 year's, kid's and grandkids, my boxes are in the garage, certainly working on downsizing, your cost is higher up there I believe? Your design is perfect!!! Thank you ❤Edit...300-400 here for a spot in a park, knowing someone with some land and a big heart, I freeze at 70 lol. A wood stove would make a huge difference. That's still a good price for what you have and where you are!!! I have 2 pup's and a kitty, this would be amazing!!!

wow, the city seriously rips you off with fees. if they allowed you solar it would be more cost-effective, same for getting your own propane. it would be somewhere around $150+ monthly savings, a minimum of $1700 yearly. the solar would pay for itself in 14 to18 months. Solar panels now have a life expectancy between 20 and 30 years.

Wow! You paid almost as much as I paid for my 3 bdr house. I'm in NE Minnesota so I know about the cold weather.
Now I really want a tiny house with lil' bills like yours. My highest bill was over $400 for electric, bcuz my heat is electric. (Came with my house). The cheapest way to go here. Wood stove would be the cheapest but my insurance would double. And I'm already paying too much for that. Buying a house wasn't in my plans n now I know why. It bites. Everything is very expensive. You have it made.

I live in Southern California and to have electricity through the municipality or here it is Pacific Gas and Electric Company it is probably half of what you are charged to just have it turned on in it on your property but on the other hand what they charge for the electric used here is unbelievable so the bill would probably be about the same for me here if I had what you have there just differently categorized you've done well

Thank you so much for this video. I just came across this video and I am so glad I did. I am in the process of selling my house and renting a condo for two years. We have been thinking about what we want to do after that. Tiny house living is an option but we are also thinking about building a tiny house out of shipping containers. Did you looking into using containers? I’m going to look at your previous videos to see your tiny house.
You are so welcome! I love the container home movement but I wanted mine to be on a trailer for easy of movement so I went with that instead.

How much did you condo cost to buy vs the cost of your tiny house? I'm just interested to learn what the advantages are for you? I assume your condo was bigger and in general I would assume that resell values are better for condos than for tiny homes.
YUP they sold us a bill of goods on that whole deregulation thing. Living ain't cheap... and apparently neither is dieing unless you donate yourself to science, lol. Then I will just be a charitable donation line item on my last tax return. Thank you for sharing!

Mint Tiny Homes is telling me that going wider than 8.5ft (RV certification) means it will be classified as a Park model and that legally in Canada that size cannot include a loft. Have you heard this or had any problems? How did you decide on your size, legally?
Hi Faith. I registered mine as a park model simply because many provinces won’t allow year round living in a RV. As for a loft that wasn’t a problem for me at all. However, my loft isn’t my bedroom. I describe it as a storage space so that may be why it’s not been a problem do me. I’m not an expert. I can only speak from my experience. Good luck! ☺️🙏🏼

When you rent a spot at an RV park, do they make you do a 12 month lease agreement like an apartment complex, or is it just month to month and you are not tied down with a lease?
1 year lease then month to month after that.

Would it make a difference if you add solar panels and become a electric hub?
Hi. Maybe but really it’s the cost of being connected to the grid that makes up the big part of the bill and that wouldn’t change because I’m required to be connected in order to park where I am. When I move to Vancouver Island or the interior of BC I’ll be more rural and plan to be on solar then.
But couldn’t your solar feed the grid and reduce your electrical bill when being attached to the grid. Essentially making you a electric hub for the grid. You are attached to the grid and feeding it. Then you pay only for what you use and get paid for the overage that’s was fed into the grid.
True but the delivery charges and fees stay the same no matter what. My actual usage is pretty minimal, especially in the summer.
Dont think there is enough sunlight in Calgary to be cost effective.

Which is why most of my tiny house friends own land.
Trailer park "condo fees" are the price of cheap rent or a mortgage. They are so high in Alberta.

Wish we had here the same taxes as you, as we pay a lot here .
I know some people living in BC and pay the exact same amount as you to park on a private lot .
Of course, knowing someone and park it for free or just little would be amazing, but same time, you are probably safer having others around you versus off grid out of no where .
The land that I bought had free hold and no restrictions and that permit me to do whatever I want , it was a must .
When I told you about reasons I decide ( for now ) not to move on Vancouver island, was the bylaws and strata fees, I never wanted to pay someone else for a piece of land that I own , doesnt makes sense to me.
Maybe you can find a little piece of land near by and save on those monthly fees once its pay , just a suggestion.
Could help you reduce some fees .

Maybe cause of this actual craziness with covid and people have the time to think more about essential things and big long questions about existing too .

Some friends were looking at me strangely when about 15 years ago, I told them that all of us should make at least 500 dollars a day...as you did Adelia or Adelina , sorry , if I mistake your name, sound was low on the video , I love playing with maths and calculs.
Here in Quebec and I'm sure it's the same for you in Jasper or Whistler, simply a little escapade of 1 or 2 nights and you spent 1000 already .
They are restaurants and hotels that I will never go and its seem to be strictly for the very few .
Just going to see an hockey game and boum , another 700 !!!
It goes very fast.
I read some comments on here and I find them very logical and interesting and I adore to hear about others experiences and we are also all different, but same way , not so much different .
For a long time I am happy with little , with out sacrificing my comfort , a short of " simplicité volontaire " type of life .
It's TRUE, that we are privileged to live in Canada ,but let's not forget that it ain't cheap either, we all still need a bit of money.
I am close to retiring and each year and year after year, I am paying more than 50 K in income taxes ...and thank God I dont go to hospital very often.
But that money go for services etc...
Downsizing for me equal to stop or unplug from " the system " and relax and breathe for the rest of my little life.

Living simply do not mean that we are broke and mean and cheap , just a smarter way to live and to enjoy more the moment with out any money issues and stress and more happy moments in the outdoors.

You might consider moving to Vancouver Island. Persuade your people to follow you here. Much cheaper. More beautiful.
