Saw it in a packed theater in California. Audience loved it and everybody was laughing at the ending when they walked out. Incidentally my memory of walking out of the theater at that time was one of the precious few moments of my life of security, sanity and well-being.
Laughing at the ending? When the kid's parents blow up and he's left alone? (Unless my memory is incorrect and that's not the ending?) I was about 7 years old when I saw this at the theatre, and I was haunted by that ending. I was like, "here is all this wild fantasy, and in the end good triumphs over evil, but then that's really fantasy, and evil wins and the kid is an orphan." I'll never forget that sick feeling.

Forget the movie (loved it since I saw it as a kid ) it's the Siskel & Ebert review for me. What a great combo. Though this takes me back to lazy nights on the couch as a kid. I loved this show, every week learning about new movies coming out. They had a good tone and I'm sure I learned something too. TY for the content.
I liked the movie when it came out. Wouldn't say I loved it. But at least it was original and imaginative, different from most of the run of the mill crap that was being put out at the time.
THIS flick is also supposed to be a SATIRE as well as an "adventure fantasy" - shit, it's even made by the MONTY PYTHON troupe! .. . but THESE unreliable tools made NO MENTION of THAT fact!

Roger understood the assignment, Gene seemed to get too personal. I’m same as you, if gene is down on a film I usually get something out of it. **note I only know these dudes from RUclips and was too young to see their show**
Eh, I see where Gene’s coming from. The movie’s a little slow at times, and the characters don’t really feel fleshed out enough for me to care about them, excepting the main kid. I somewhat disagree with him on the Agamemnon part being boring, though. I think the kid’s sense of wonder and Sean Connery’s charm carry it well enough. And while Ebert usually is more in line with popular opinion, there are the occasional films, Die Hard being a prime example, where Gene lines up better.
It was more of a Gilliam film than a Python film. Same with Brazil, his next picture. Idle was eventually in Gilliam's The Adventures of Baron Munchausen.

I agree with Siskel's assessment. I'm a fan of other stuff Gilliam has done, but I watched this as a kid and it didn't hold my interest. Time Bandits has some creative and humorous elements, but I find it too odd and uneven.
The Titanic scene wasn't boring. It was sad. Kevin was really upset, Randall was acting just like his parents - more interested in wealth and material things than his happiness or where his cigar ashes were going. The comedy took a bit of a break. It was sad boy time.

I Love Time Bandits
Legendary film!
These old Siskel and Ebert movie reviews on TV do draw out long clips from the films, don't they?
Where they still on PBS back then? Same number of movies to review, but more time to fill.
People had longer attention spans then.
This was when they are still on PBS so they had more time to show clips.
I've seen the DVD in some stores, but I can't find it on any streaming service.
it is on MAX.
