The medusa scene scared the hell out of me as a kid.
Same
I guess that was true for a lot of us. Calibos was also scary to me.
Me too! I was traumatized
Highly enjoyable and a lot of fun. Love the Medusa scene. Really good score by Laurence Rosenthal.
Always loved the lighting and sound in that climactic Medusa scene. Conceiving of her as part snake herself was so terrifying and wonderful. She's not just some beautiful woman with a snake wig, but truly cursed. 😳🐍
The Medusa scene is one of my all time favorite scenes in cinema. An unbelievable mix of tension, fear, and suspense.
One of Harryhausen's stop motion masterpieces.
I just discovered this channel while researching the history of science fiction, and your catalog is incredibly useful, well organized, high quality uploads. Truly you Sir are doing the Lord’s work. Thank you.
I'm not a fantasy movie fan, but you have to admire the ambition of this film and most of the stop-motion is impressive.
10 years old and I saw this at the cinema in 81, loved it
Eddy Coulson I was 15. Saw it with Ringo Starr's Caveman @ the drive in.
Happy Berfday bro me too
Ha! I was 5, i think, but I was there!
saw this and dragonslayer in the movies the same day
Nick Lipenta Lucky You!!!!!! And it must have cost something like $3-$5 to see back then. I envy you for getting to see all those movies in those times!!!
Dragonslayer was a good film too, but sadly it flopped at the box office and Titans was a big hit.
Fun summer movie of 1981 saw this movie before a sneak preview of Victory. Back then when they had sneak preview.
I love this movie! Sure the "special effects" are dated, but 38 years ago there was no CGI. It had a great story and strong performances. I saw it in the theater when it first came out and loved it!
Dated maybe, but there's a lost art charm. Stop motion was expensive and time consuming so I think Ray Harryhausen was the only one still doing it after 1970. Most features had long since switched to practical effects and trick photography, so this was like a 50s antiquity throwback picture made in 1981.
@@75aces97 Stop Motion was used frequently by several filmmakers throughout the 1970's to the 1990's . Star Wars Trilogy, The Thing, Robocop 1& 2 and The Nightmare Before Christmas come to mind by such greats as Phil Tippet, Dennis Muren , Rob Bottin and Tim Burton. Jurrasic Park was very close to being Stop Motion because Spielberg wasn't sure CGI was perfected yet. Several tests of the Raptors were done in stop motion before it was abandoned.
@@comicbookninja5268 oh right, I forgot about Robocop.
It was used in Dead Alive, Nightmare Before Christmas, James & Giant Peach, and Ardman Studios productions in the 90s, but it had fallen out of favor. It was low tech, but oddly effective when done well. Still very time consuming though.
There are still a few stop-motion studios around: Laika Studios (The Boxtrolls) and Aardman Animation (Wallace and Grommit).
that's the point, dumb ass.
One of Ray's best movies, and it ended up being his last, although he made cameos in movies. It's also one of my favorite 80's sword and sorcery movies, a genre I have kind of a soft spot for.
One of my favorites, with an awesome performance by Sir Laurence Olivier as Zeus. "Find and fulfill your destiny." Also Ursula Andress as Aphrodite! :-)
And Dame Maggie Smith as Athena!
Another example of why 1981 was a great year for movies.
It really was.
So these two esteemed geniuses loved Clash of the Titans, were split on Flash Gordon....but both hated Excalibur!?!?!?
I'd rather watch a Harryhausen movie than any CGI borefest. There's a sense of magic and wonder that's completely missing from today's cinema.
What makes it still so appealing is it's a love story.
nope
Sal Paradise yes it is...the story goal is perseus trying to we'd andromeda, that's the STORzy GOAL. Everything he does is simply a strategy to accomplish that aim :)
@@robertwiegman1 the adventure is the appeal

never saw this as a kid, Jason and the Argonauts though was one of my favourites. I caught it recently though and thought it was a lot of fun. I thought it succeeded in showing such an imaginative and rich world, the blend of the human and the mythical. I thought it didn't try to modernise the themes or put in any modern updated messages but stayed true to its roots. The only complaint I had was the owl seemed too obvious an R2D2 thing, i know star waes was massive right then. Its well paced and the ending was great. Plus Judi Bowker was so beautiful then, definitely well cast. The locations, costumes and art design also were great i thought. Not much not to like. Looks great on blu ray.
It's great that they mention Harryhausen at the start. I think Harryhsusen is the only FX artist that is a genre unto himself.
Saw this a LONG time ago as a kid. Definitely a favorite!!!! LOVED MEDUSA AND THE MECHANICAL OWL!!!!!
Something good about science fiction and sci-fi realistic of the movie and the story always enjoy them because I know they're not real but they seem real and they actually could be in mythology
We were watching this on TV and the part where the Kraken rises out of the sea scared my 4-year-old nephew so much he ran out of the living room.
😂 poor boy
Raiders was definitely 1000 times better than Clash, but as clunky as Clash looks now both in terms of story and SFX you would have thought they’d have been able to do a great remake with today’s CGI and tech. Unsurprisingly they made a worse movie.
the remake moved around too much- constantly ugly action, no motivating story.... just action, action, action that was ironically boring.
@@CaptainSpalding72 they're making dumber movies now because they think they don't have to focus as much on story to keep the viewer engaged. Just look at the first Star Wars compared to the prequels and sequels as just one example.
The remake was terrible for some reason.
Raiders is good but not 1000 times better LOL, I enjoy Titans much more than I did any Raiders movie, as good as they were. Clunky? I guess you could say Raiders looks clunky today too, since it is nearly 40 years old as well! Moves way too slow for the attention deficit audience of today, Indy just doesn't move fast enough for todays kids.
@@everett403 Each to his own.
Love this movie 🍿
Great review of a great movie. One of 1981's biggest box office hits.
4:41 HILLARY CLINTON CAMEO
Hahaha!
You're right! :)
Trump's cameo was good too. It's not on camera because he turned his back on Jason and retreated, calling it a 'stable genius' move.
@@tomservo5007 Wrong.
I am so glad I got to see this back then.
This movie was spectacular on the big screen
I saw this movie when it came out. The stop motion was ground breaking. Then, sometime in the late nineties this movie became the laughing stock of special effects. It was mocked as the weirdest, kookiest movie…the owl in particular. Then, in the 2010’s it was given respect again. Weird.
I wouldn't be surprised if my parents saw this review, and brought me to see it in the theater back in 1981. They were 100% on point on this film.
As much as I admire Harryhausen, to me, this was not one of his better efforts. Not a bad movie, but it didn't match up to his previous efforts.
I saw this film at a Drive In way back as a youngster Loved it. It is still a great watch. I recently got the DVD at the local thrift shop for $2.
Release the Kraken.

Much better than the remake.
🤗🎯📼🙃🤯🕹🎰🌍🦖📽good movie
Song of the South please explain what that is..... Lolz
Look it up, dumb ass.
Disney movie from the 40s. They don't really talk about it anymore.
Above ave. Not great but 👍
Loved the effects but the acting was HORRIBLE.
Agree about the effects, but Olivier and Maggie Smith and Burgess Meredith were great!
I am shocked this movie got a positive review.
williamhowe1 because...?
@@christophmatthews4313 The movie seemed dated even at the time.
Shocked? It was in the top 10 of box office hits the summer it came out! Very popular movie.
@@williamhowe1 Dated? Well I guess Raiders of the Lost Ark would be considered dated too, since it takes place in the late 1930s early 1940s and is based off the old serials of that time!
I liked the movie, but it's not very good. Crappy acting. Hamlin was wooden as can be. The chick who played the main girl was boring as can be. I didn't buy the love story for a second. Funny I've never seen either of them again.
I always loved that horrified look Poseidon got on his face whenever he released the Kraken.
