Oh, man! Did I love Clash of the Titans! I'd gotten a copy of Edith Hamilton's _Mythology_ the year before, the perfect book for a 9-year-old, and tore right through it. I'm drawing pictures in my notebooks of Hercules, Theseus, Perseus, Zeus....and then here's this movie that's all about the Greek gods and heroes and monsters....you can imagine how pumped up I was to see it. And it was amazing.
I think I got this mixed up with _Jason and the Argonauts (1963)_ which also used stop-motion animation. I remember seeing someone did a modified frame-rate RUclips video to make the skeletons look less jumpy. I think the Star Wars sequels also used stop-motion, as well as the Tim Burton movies.
History of the World Part 1 is exactly what Ebert said it was....and that was great! It was not constrained by plot or theme or subject. It was a history of Brooks' humor...and that was just fine with me.
I was 13 when my dad took my 17 year old brother and I to see it. I don't know if he didn't understand what a Mel Brooks picture would be, but he was not amused. I laughed my ass off at Madeline Kahn "My tits are falling off!"
HAMBURGER!!! My family saw Nice Dreams at the drive in back when it was released and my dad, who was a 30 year cop, laughed so hard we thought he’d have to be recussitated 😆😆he almost died when cheech couldn’t scratch his balls😂😂the memory of dad laughing so hard is a good one. He did say that he’d break our arms if. We did what they did.
I saw Clash of the Titans when I was 7 years old, I'm sure saw it more than once in theaters, what a great film for a boy's imagination to go crazy with. I still count Medusa as one of the great movie monsters of all time.
Amazing that it made money while coming out the same weekend as _Raiders of the Lost Ark._ Maybe people couldn't get tickets to the latter, so saw this? In any cases it's one of only three fantasy / sword and sorcery movies of the 1980s that made money at the box office. _Conan the Barbarian (1982)_ and _The Dark Crystal (1982)_ also made money at the box office, but pretty much anything else you can think of didn't, like _The Princess Bride (1987),_ though they may have done so with VHS sales.
"History of the World - Part I" is a hysterical film. The Inquisition number is brilliant. Gene got it right, but I think it's even better than he thought. It's not up there with "Young Frankenstein" but it's a terrific entertainment nonetheless.
Yep we saw it at our local drive in the summer of its release. A double feature with what else, up in smoke. I’ll always have the memories of my 30 year police officer dad nearly laughing himself into a tizzy when Chong couldn’t scratch his balls in the straight jacket. Good times seeing movies as a kid.
Ready to have your mind blown?! Suzanne Kent was in both Nice Dreams (Sidney the Agent) and History of the World Part I (Prehistoric Man) 🤪 She has a great IMBD page, you'll recognize her from a lot of great projects 👍

It's hard to tell if Roger Ebert actually watched Final Exam to the end because yes it does take a while before the killer "sticks his knife into the cast" but he does in the last half. (plus there's an opening kill with a couple in their car making for a bodycount of about 8 or 9) Did Roger Ebert just want more gore?
The genius of History of the World Pt 1 is that after seeing it as a kid, I actually started reading real history. As I got deeper into subjects I kept seeing little side gags from this movie that blew totally past me. The movie would go on to become a classic. And ... who doesn't love Jews in Space? I've been waiting for that movie for over 40 years now.
They had a following that loved them after people heard and grew up with their comedy records, they were popular and people wanted to see them in um, “film”
Somehow I have only seen one of these movies: Clash of the Titans, and only because my brother BEGGED me to go and see it (against my will!) (; I haven't seen it since and it is on TCM this week! Dare I see it again and see if I still hate it? (;
Big people do want to work out. But you know what it's like to have people make fun of you when you show up at a gym or ride a bike? Stick your sneering where the sun don't shine.
Every Christmas they play the C&C skit on the radio. "Santa claus wasn't a musician, man!" "I dig that. That cat didn't know anything, man." When I was maybe 11 I wanted to see clash of the Titans so badly to the point of distraction. When I finally saw it ten years later: it sucked. 10X better movie in a similar vein: Jason and the Argonauts (1963).
History of The World is punctuated by moments of sheer brilliance but it's far behind Brooks' best films. Unfortunately, Brooks would never again produce a classic
I'm one of the few (apparently) people who think "Spaceballs" is mostly TERRIBLE. There are some good lines and good moments, but it's pretty bad - especially when compared to his best films.@@saymynameice-zen-berg511
Re:"History of the World Part I". Ebert hit it right on the head. I love Mel Brooks, one of the funniest people on earth, but I can't stand this film. How many jokes can you make about people urinating, farting, penis size, etc. etc? When I saw it I said "Enough already!" The Inquisition suffers from a very bad case of wishing it was Springtime for Hitler. It isn't by a long shot. When the film came out, there were a lot of people walking out of the theater after about 30 minutes Ten funny gags out of about 400 makes for a terrible film.
I dont think History of the World Part 1 was a nose dive but its arguably Brooks last great film and maybe wasnt as gut busting hilarious as Blazing Saddles or Young Frankenstein.

I saw it when I was 13 and it did pique my interest in Greek Mythology too. Special effects at the time were great

I'm sure Roger thought twice of his "Cheech & Chong play other characters" idea years later when he saw "The Corsican Brothers"
yeah..that was bad....a really really bad idea..and a horrible poster...
"The Hand" was written by Oliver Stone....
Cheech and Chong becomemovie reviewers.
yeah independently they do great but together they only have one routine. Its funny but not original.
I like Cheech & Chong, but "The Corsican Brothers" was terrible.
They liked them in movies where they didn't play variations on their personas, like YELLOWBEARD and AFTER HOURS.
History of the World Part 1 is exactly what Ebert said it was....and that was great!

Very unrated
and arguably Brooks last great movie.

I've seen It at least a Dozen Times.

Roger, first rule of reviewing Cheech & Chong movies: know which one is which.
"History of the World - Part I" is a hysterical film. The Inquisition number is brilliant. Gene got it right, but I think it's even better than he thought. It's not up there with "Young Frankenstein" but it's a terrific entertainment nonetheless.
Agreed. A staple of my youth. I still know all the lyrics to The Inquisition.
I especially loved "Jews In Space!"
That is a film that needs to be made!
@@o.c.kiddkidd5163 It was - they called it "Spaceballs."
I memorized that song from watching it on HBO....
Thanks for the episode upload
the one with Stacy Keach and the burning Winnebago was funny too.
I remember seeing Nice Dreams in the theater. Summer of '81 was a great one!

Harvey Korman seen here in HOTW part 1 was a seriously underrated comedian!
I adore, "15...10 commandments" 😆. 0:50
Nice Dreams is a classic in my book.

I get why people who grew up with it love Jason & the Argonaut but Clash of the Titans is maybe Harryhausen's best movie.

Love the music. What year? 1980?
I went to see High Risk in the theatre after seeing their review. I loved it! The movie has disappeared now. I wish Shout factory would do a release.
It’s on Tubi now.
@@johnbogg7395 Really! Is it a good copy?
@@reesebn38 I have not checked. I just looked for it, but Tubi is great and the uploads have looked nice for what I have seen.
@@johnbogg7395 Ya it's the crapy VHS copy that was on prime.
@@reesebn38 We can only hope Kino Lorber puts out a decent disc. It’s their wheelhouse.
I want to see "High Risk."
Roger didn't seem to know which was which. Cheech is not mistakened jerry bear, Chong is.
Brooks is making History of the World part II as a tv show. Should be interesting.
Roger was wrong about STARDUST MEMORIES and HISTORY OF THE WORLD, which was Mel's last great movie.
The Hand does sound lol funny.
One wonders how Cheech and Chong got to make so many films...
The films had a low budget and brought in more money then they cost. I believe Chong directed most of them.
"Up In Smoke" and "Next Movie" were/are pretty funny and entertaining, but by "Nice Dreams" the formula was already getting thin...
@@eargasm1072 I honestly thought they peaked with Nice Dreams and it was all down hill from there.

I like History of the World - Part I and The Cladh of the Titans.
Me too, actually.
"Muscle Building Emporium." Well its clear as hell Roger never once visited a gym just by looking at him. But he doesn't have to advertise it.
You're projecting.
Big people do want to work out. But you know what it's like to have people make fun of you when you show up at a gym or ride a bike? Stick your sneering where the sun don't shine.
It's so funny that hate classics more often than loving them.
History of the World part 1 is a huge classic. It's also extremely gross and offensive.

He would produce Spaceballs years later. Some would say a definite cult classic, but as years go by it gets closer to classic status.
@@saymynameice-zen-berg511 That was a decent one. Hardly a classic and nowhere near his best.

Side note:
I loved Mighty Joe Young(the original).
It was far superior to King Kong in every way.
The remake was just another cash grab.
I agree.
The Original Mighty Joe Young is a Classic.
A movie reviewer that can’t tell who’s Cheech and who’s Chong.
Ebert really swung and missed with History of the World. It remains one of the funniest movies of all time and eternally quotable.
Guess who is still alive Cheech and Chong...we know who isn't,lol.
