This brings me back to my childhood. I collected all of the food erasers back when Daiso still wasn’t here in the U.S. I had to go to one of the few Asian bookstores in the area that would stock Iwako erasers and not the knock-off brands. I still have them to this day. Glad to see a bit of how they’re made.

When I used to catch colds and have to go to the hospital, I used to feel terrible. However, during one of my hospital stays, the nurse gave me a cute eraser. It may seem like a small gesture, but it brought me immense joy and lifted my spirits. To this day, I remember the kindness of that nurse and the happiness I felt. It's one of the reasons why I want to become a doctor - to bring comfort and joy to patients, just like that nurse did for me.

The biggest surprise for me is knowing somewhere in the 1st world economy there's a country which can make colored erasers with multiple parts with assembly required and be a profitable business as well!!! You have to love Japan, All good things come from Japan!!!

I (an American) live in Switzerland, and it sometimes surprises me the things that are still manufactured here, given the high labor costs. (For example, plastic tubs, storage bowls, etc; laundry detergents and the like; and of course the famous tool industry, both pocket knives, but also things like the best screwdrivers in the world, which aren’t even that expensive.) Honestly, I sometimes think that it’s less that manufacturing companies _can’t_ be profitable in first world countries, but rather that most are so very greedy that they go abroad so they can make even more profit. We’ve become conditioned to think things would be unaffordable if manufactured domestically, when in fact they definitely could be in many cases.

Japan still makes a LOT of it's own stuff. Even in 100 yen shops, a lot of the products are made in Japan. I think it's a reflection of Japan's long history of craftmanship, the quality of the product is what's important, not so much making as much money as you can from it. And what better way to ensure quality than to do it yourself?

Japanese worker: Boss, we don't feel like doing this task.
Japanese Boss: Okay, tomorrow I'll buy a new machine, and get cheap labors from China... You move to assembly line.
Japanese worker still work for the company, Boss didn't fire anyone, and product was labeled "Handmade". Everyone is happy!
Half way around the world, people are losing jobs, machines are taking over, and bosses still can't find the cause of losses, so they blamed product from Japan! (meanwhile, the same company in China was secretly making products for both parties)
