  • Let's take a look at a battle between F5 Tigers and MiG21 Fishbeds
Hi everyone, today we will be doing something a little different. Instead of a single airplane bio we will look at two aircraft that faced off against each other in actual combat and what the results were. The first part of the video we will look at each aircraft individually, and give you a quick overview of the conflict. The second part of the video my good friends over at Grim Reapers will fly both sides of the combat using DCS. Ready? Here we go, we will start with the F-5:
    F-5 Overview
The Northrop F-5E Tiger II is a lightweight multirole fighter which is an upgraded version of the F-5A Freedom Fighter. Upgrades to the engines, avionics, and structural improvements allow the F-5E to fly faster, carry more fuel and weapons, and have significantly improved sensors. All of this was done while keeping the F-5E an easy to maintain, inexpensive to fly, and highly maneuverable fighter. The F-5E is still in use today as an aggressor or adversary aircraft by the US Navy, and is still operational with over 25 countries. The Tiger II has and continues to make its mark on military aviation.
    MiG-21 Overview
The Mikoyan-Guervich MiG-21 is a lightweight Mach 2 fighter and interceptor codenamed Fishbed by NATO. Initially developed by the Soviet Union, the Mig-21 is still operational for several air forces more than six decades after its first flight and is the world's most produced supersonic aircraft. The MiG-21's delta wing design allows for high speeds and incredible climb rates, but does result in rapid energy loss in a turning dogfight. However its easy to maintain, easy to fly, ruggedness has earned the MiG-21 its reputation and cemented its place in aviation history.
Both the F5 and MiG 21 were lightweight fighters that were easy to maintain and inexpensive to operate. They would encounter each other in combat in the skies over the horn of Africa. During 1977 through 1978, Somali forces invaded the Ethiopian region of Ogaden. This became known as the Ogaden war.
My good friends over at Grim Reapers will fly this mission inside the F-5s using Eagle Dynamics DCS. Enjoy!

@@coolfungame8467 he's calling b.s. also I think he's referring to the complete fantasy that many nations suffer regarding their air power particularly in asia. The Chinese claim they can actively track all of our aircraft. I find that amusing considering we weren't capable of tracking our B2s. At the end of the day the Mig21 aka the fishbed is just fast. In every other sense particularly in avionics the F5 is a superior combat aircraft.

Certainly we hear from Northrop fighters. We hear from them all the time....kinda. McDonnell Douglas sort of stole the F-18 from them, eventually making it a Boeing product. The F-18 is a development of the F-5, via the YF-17 Cobra.

The USAF quickly discovered the F5 has little chance of winning a 1v1 when fighting in the vertical. MIG pilots know this (ALWAYS ASSUME YOUR ENEMY KNOWS AS MUCH ABOUT YOUR AIRCRAFT AS YOU KNOW ABOUT HIS) the RP-21 radar the MIG does have a "look down" problem as it can not see an aircraft due to reflections from the ground. Interesting historical note: The Soviets were able to acquire a F-5E Tiger II from Vietnam after the end of the war, and did a thorough evaluation of it, including several mock dogfights against the MiG-21. In the hands of experiences Soviet test pilots, the F-5E consistently dominated the Fishbed. Because of this, the representatives from MiG insisted that they put it up against the MiG-23, a significantly more technologically advanced fighter, to the protest of the engineers running the test. The result was that the F-5 won against the MiG-23 in their first dogfight.

The other funny thing about this is that the 23 should be a wildly successful plane - design-wise, it's got lot going for it. But it suffers BADLY in air-to-air combat. It's the TIE fighter of Earth.

    • @thefolder69
      @thefolder69 2 года назад +1

@@warbuzzard7167 from what I understand, the engineers were sure the 23 would win, because statistically it should've; the reason it didn't was because the wing sweep was entirely manual and the pilots just couldn't keep their wings at the optimal sweep for every situation in the middle of an intense fight (rightfully so, I imagine it would be extremely difficult) and so the 23 underperformed compared to its theoretical maximum performance

For more information on the Ogaden War: African nations organized the OAS (Organization of African Unity) in Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) in 1963. There, representatives of the states agreed on the "sanctity of (colonial) borders" (successfully limiting the number of INTERSTATE wars in Africa). This however, meant that along the line of Saharan Africa (roughly between Islam/Christianity), there would be a number of conflicts (South Sudan, Nigerian Civil War, etc). Even then, Somalis expressed their desire that Somali majority areas in Kenya (Northern Province) and Ogaden (in Ethiopia) should be united with their brethren in Somalia, which was immediately censured by the Ethiopian host.
Somalis bid their time, trying to unify their state (which didn't work out too well), until a military coup put in place a Marxist government of Siad Barre. Barre, eager to exploit a similar internal conflict in stagnating Ethiopia (Marxist military junta Derg vs Emperor, insurgencies in Eritrea and Ogaden), and gain legitimacy, invaded Ethiopia, seeking Ogaden annexation. Soviets, unable to stop the conflict, and finding more Derg more radical and useful, switched to supporting Ethiopia (hitherto an American client), prompting Americans (and Chinese, since they did anything to hurt Soviets) to switch to Somalis.
Biggest influence, however, were Cubans: they had just recently more or less fully expelled the South Africans from Angola, and now switched their expeditionary forces (30k soldiers, IIRC) into Ethiopia, quickly collapsing the Somali successes (which had been retarded, in any way, by Ethiopian air supremacy).
After the defeat, Somali junta didn't last long, and when it fell apart, so did Somalia, leading to a great movie, Black Hawk Down.

It has a nasty habit of killing the pilot on takeoff due to oxygen system issues. not sure if this is a game issue that is yet to be fully solved, or just lack of training (each plane in DCS has a full manual). "The Mig-21 is easy to fly"
Not in a rate or radius fight with an F-4, not when enemies have long-range FOX-1 or FOX-3 missiles, not when a plane is on your 6 (there's pretty much zero rear visibility for the pilot), not when you need to make a snapshot with the guns (it has limited forward visibility), not when using your slow muzzle velocity guns (only 710 m/s and they don't have a lot of ammo), not when your plane has to make high-g turns (it bleeds speed really quickly and it doesn't turn well at low speeds), not when you're approaching supersonic speeds (cockpit vibration is so bad that it can cause additional fatigue), not when you don't at least have R-60 missiles, not when you can't use terrain as cover (you'll probs get picked off by previously mentioned radar-guided missiles), not if you need to rely on having good radar, not if you need to attack ground targets, not if you don't want to worry about pilot safety issues (especially when landing), and not if you don't have strength in numbers.

I've heard that the major complaint of the F5 was low power. I thought it was an exaggeration until watching this video. I see now that the Mig's ability to climb away from the F5 was an advantage for the Mig. The Mig's tactics seemed to mimic the F4 Phantoms in Vietnam, where the F4 could climb away from most of it's adversaries. Except maybe for the Mig 21. Gomer glasses, lol. With newer smaller jets available now, could it be possible to mount more powerful engines in the same space?
