I was pissed when hossa signed with the Wings. I remember being 11 & going on Myspace & sending mean messages to every "Marian Hossa" profile hoping I'd eventually find the man himself.
So many memories watching this guy. What a career. I've had to hear my grandpa say the Leafs need guys like Hossa for about 15 years now. He'll never let the dream go even after he retired.
It worked out for The Penguins, had they signed Hossa, they probably would have lost Jordan Staal earlier than they did. Jordan Staal was a key part of The Penguins winning The Stanley Cup in 2009. Staal also was apart of the trade tree that ultimately landed The Penguins Nick Bonino and Brian Dumoulin, who were both key pieces in the Penguins back to back cups in 2016 and 2017.
As much as I hate the Pens I hated Hossa more when he jumped ship to Detroit. Always felt like he gave up for greener pastures. Basically the Durant before Durant. Glad to finally hear his side of things and now that I'm older I understand where he's coming from.
I don't understand the 'jumped ship' argument especially from non Pens fan. He got traded there not because he chose to. And it worked out for everyone anyway
I enjoyed watching Hossa play. What an amazing player. However, I’m a Pens fan and I’ve seen many great players come and go since I started watching since 1975. I’m a fan of the Logo not just 1 player.

Franzen had monster playoffs from '08 to '10 and had a 4 and 5 goal game, but no one could have predicted his concussion problems he would get. Of course a healthier Hossa would have been the better option.
Keep in mind that Franzen was the right decision, it’s only because of injuries that Franzen isn’t like a historic figure in Detroit, because he was a hell of a performer in the playoffs when he was healthy until the concussions and injuries, which you can’t really foresee happening to the extent they did.
I remember the trade deadline when they got Hossa, it was crazy enough my mother called me at work to make sure I heard haha. Even though he left and the Pens traded Malone to Tampa to make the cap space for him it was still the best rental I could have imagined. Guy was a great player and I was also extactic they beat him after but happy he won some in Chi town.
I will never forgive Ken Holland for letting him walk. Still my favorite player though, even after signing with Chicago. Just an absolute stallion out there.
Ken Holland really is a quite average GM. He was blessed with talented people around him throughout most of his Red Wings tenure. Really made him look better than he is.

Yes, he won cups after swapping teams 3 more times. With Senators history of trading their star players await I think they got a pretty good return at that point. It was a good hockey trade. I agree Heater burned out quick and had nowhere near Hossa's work ethic but he did well with the Sens.

Those Hawks teams from 2009-2016, and yes I am biased, but I think they were the best Team in the League and maybe of all time. That 2012-13 Hawks team that began the season without a regulation loss in 24 Straight games, which projected over an 82-game season to 132 Points and would have tied the All-Time Single Season record for points in a season by a team.

He never underestimated anyone. He would have loved to keep playing with Sid, but at the same time he felt he needed to go to Detroit in order to learn from the players (and couches) there and grow as a player. Ever heard the saying 'to be the best, you need to learn from the best'? In addition to being great offensively, he learned there how to be even better defensively and Pavel Datsyuk helped him a lot to achieve this goal. Niklas Lidstrom and his play also had impact on him, it's no coincidence he asked him to come to announce him when being inducted to Hall of Fame. As he said, it was hard to leave Pittsburgh, but without going to Detroit, he wouldn't have become the player he was.
as a life long pens fan i never had any animosity or trashed him when he left. he played great when he was here and losing him was always on the table because he was a pending UFA at seasons end. the only thing about him leaving that was infuriating was that shero seemed to have no plan B and waited to long on hossa to decide instead of realizing they were out of the race and moving on to do something else

Had the Wings won, I’d have agreed with you. Beating him in 09 and then him going on to beat the Flyers the next year, all is forgiven. I appreciate the fact that he said in this interview that it was a mistake. Or crazy. Or whatever his exact wording was, to sign with Detroit and leave behind the chance to play with Sid. Their chemistry in their short time together was bonkers. I honestly believed he could’ve scored 60 on Sid’s wing for an entire year. But who knows now? Sid got two more cups with mediocre wingers who work hard. Hossa got some more. I’d have liked to have seen Sid play with him just to know their true potential, but that’s life.

As a Pens fan I appreciate Hossa being willing to circle back and be open about that process. In the end it worked out for everyone.
