This movie is made 1978 but ment to be acted like the world was in 1950s and 1960s. The director said in one of the videos that at that time for men to show emotions was to hit each other, that was the only way that was "acceptable", only way of touching, so the hug was pretty gay in that time, so that is the reason why it was suddenly awkward again and why they went to comb their hair like that.
@@elanorallmann Good point. Even today, heterosexual males are wary of appearing too close. They often show affection with each other by teasing, good-natured punching or wrestling.
My old best friend played Kenickie in a school play adaptation of Grease our senior year of high school. He nailed it. Too bad they didn't do this scene, it would have been funny.
***** Yup. And it shows!!! Kinda wish it was a straight tag team racing at the end. With Danny and Kenickie teaming up to face the two other guys!! Would've been awesome to watch..
Most girls I asked, believed that Jeff Conaway (Kenickie) was the best looking guy in the movie. I never learned to just recently, that Kenickie was related to the auto shop teacher Mrs Murdoch. R.I.P. Jeff.
It’s not that hard to pull off if you have the correct length of hair and correct products. You might want to get some Pomade or styling Clay to get the volume and the shine (grease) in the hair. If it’s too expensive, Vaseline is an amazing alternative. I know it sounds dumb but it gets the hair slick and greasy. Just remember not to dump it in the hair. Use a index figure worth and rub it in there along with some styling clay then blow dry and use your hands or a comb to get the shape.
Man I don't think people understand how good of a scene that was. Even the guy slapping the car with the rag at the end. Fucking flawless, perfect scene.
For anyone who was wandering, I read online that it meant that he asked him because he was going to later take care of rizzos baby...but she didn't end up being pre go.
Actually, in the documentary about it, Jeff Conaway says it's about how guys in.the 50s couldn't express emotion. That Kenickie is afraid, of losing or getting hurt. And hes asking Danny for emotional support...that's why he gives him that little glance, and Danny gets it. They spontaneously hug, and break.apart as they realise what they've done, in front of everyone. Nothing to do with Rizzo and also she said it was not his baby
@@sasa-ke2024 the fact that the scene is mainly focused on showing the lack of affection and expression among men, due to the time; does not deny that there is a background in which Keni is scared that something bad happens and there is no one to taking care of the baby which he believes is hims and/or is just preparing for the future. I know Rizzo says the baby belongs to someone else. Much has been discussed about whether or not she was lying. In my opinion, and looking at the physical behavior of the movie scene as well as the situation of the couple at that time ... it makes sense that Rizzo had decided to lie to him. not saying that was right, of course, but at the end, Rizzo is a remarkable character for her double-sided personality.
“Hey, why are you guys just standing there? We have a BIG RACE to get ready for! And get the can off the hood, you putz, for Pete’s sake!!” Love that line, as Keneckie scolds his and Danny’s buddies for staring at them and being lazy, ha ha.
This may be an odd question, but when Danny said "do you want me to drive with you?", the response was (sic) "no, I want you to be my second..." Doesn't your second ride with you? I may be getting this wrong...
Anyone who says this is gay (which yep it actually might be and of course that's nothing bad) when the film and roles are clear and we know it isn't, probably never had a real male friend in his life. This is pure bromance. The acting on this one is also gold.
cookiecake Please don’t coincide this with being gay. They’re male friends, and they’re close. That doesn’t mean they’re in a relationship. You saying this is the reason why guys are scared to admit when they have close male friends - they’re afraid of being emasculated or viewed as gay when they’re not. Please don’t add to that stereotype by making this proposition.
@@whistlepunkz or maybe its because...you wouldn't want people to push a sexuality onto you that isn't you...it's like when a girl and a guy are friends and people just gossip like they're fucking each other and it just makes things uncomfortable and friendships can be tainted...not everything is homophobia, mayhaps
Basically, he's asking him take his place in the race if something goes wrong. And given how into their cars the guys in this movie are, saying that you trust someone to drive yours indicates a pretty deep bond of friendship.
I still don't 100% understand what Kenickie was exactly asking for. I know what a second is in terms of duelling but it's a bit strange. What exactly does he expect Danny to do?
I love this because either: 1) there are two homosexual men who are dealing with their sexuality or 2) there are two heterosexual men who are fighting the toxic ideals of masculinity
Both are wonderful, different betrayals of love among men in a world that punishes that. I'm so glad more men are opening up and supporting each other.
I've always found it hilarious how they both immediately started combing their hair after the hug. 🤣
The hug part wasn't even scripted :")
The hug was Jeff Conaway's idea. So was the acting like the hug didn't happen because guys didn't hug in the 50s.
