To me the most hilarious way Fate adapted Medea's traits is how the story of sending that poisoned dress to Jason's new bride implicitly is referenced in F/SN by Medea putting Artoria in a dress in UBW. By "Fate/hollow ataraxia", this evolved into a general interest in dressing up people (mostly Artoria). And Medea's implied offscreen counterpart in "Hana no Miyako" just works in fashion industry. She also has a daughter with Souichirou Kuzuki in that world.

I always assumed that Medea's NP Rule Breaker was a reference to the knife she used to cut her younger brother into pieces and threw those pieces into the sea in order to distract her father and allow the Argo to escape. Killing your sibling was heavily taboo especially in Ancient Greece as it was considered an affront to the gods so it was a huge 'breaking of the rules'. Conceptually, that knife gained not only the reputation for treachery but also defiance against both divinity and society.

That is possible, but the dagger in Rule Breaker is noticeably more for ceremonial purposes. It's not so good at actually being a dagger.

    • @kylepessell1350
      @kylepessell1350 6 месяцев назад +16

@@CrazyYurie That's true it isn't so practical as a dagger but there are several possibilities. The first possibility is that the original dagger didn't look like that until after the incident which warped its appearance. The second possibility is that it looked like that all along but as a magical tool its way more durable than a typical dagger. This means that it could still be used to kill and cut someone apart but it would be an extremely gruesome process which would further justify how horrified Jason was with her following this. The last possibility is that this isn't the original dagger at all but rather one she made with magecraft to symbolically represent what she did with the original dagger but in such a shape that she wouldn't be able to practically repeat the horrible crimes as a Servant that she committed with it in the past that ruined her life.

I think a clear flaw in the Fate "Matrix System" is that, with Casters, it always falls short in the magecraft department.
Their spells and the like either get thrown into small simplifications with Divine Words or part of their Item Construction Skill, or they have to be lucky enough to be so specific about their magic they get an specific skill on their own that explains how their magic *doesn't* work like the rest, but in this particular way.
Magecraft as a skill is almost always only relegated to Servant who are *not* in the Caster class, as if that skill is a hidden one for Casters by default. If only there was a spell sheet like in the DnD counterpart Fate is so obviously based on.

I wanna point out some of the stuff that do paint Medea as a good.
I wanna point out how in UBW she didn't actually anybody, she INTENTIONALLY avoided killing the people she took mana from, she only took enough to make them comatose. Which means Medea had planned to ensure her "battery" would survive and recover after she had won the war, as she is against unneeded casualties.
She had Kuzuki leave Shinji alive, they only targeted Medusa in that attack, meaning she was planning to avoid killing him regardless of his master status.
I forgot where, but it is mentioned in official material that a lot of Medea's more antagonistic and villainous behavior is a defensive mask, something stemming from how she had been treated by people since she left Colchis, having found herself playing into the perception of "The Witch of Betrayal" as a sort of defensive response, likely spawning from the trauma and manipulation endured during her time as an argonaut and with Jason.
The Fate version of Medea, the further and further ya look, is a good person, and it likely was the love curse being..... A bit overpowering that lead to a good chunk of the murdering. As for her kids, this is something more redeemable in some myths, as some depictions having bury them beneath a temple in order to plead to the god of that temple to return them and grant immortality. It didn't work.
Complete side note, but, she probably never was going to hurt Taiga, as this is something I realized rewatching it. She was trying to get Shirou to her side as she sees aspects of herself in him. She rejects Rin as she gravitated towards someone who's broken and hurting like her, she doesn't want him as a powerful ally, but a friend who might understand. She wanted someone else who's so broken and messed up.

Honestly I don't blame anyone that isn't a greek god. Jason and Medea's relationship was bound to fail. Jason was too focus on completing the main mission to have tooken relationships seriously (hence his first relationship with Hypsipyle his first girlfriend/wife) and Medea just wanted to complete the subquests while living her best and happy life. Making them be together was obviously gonna fail.

I really dig witches. I'm the person who usually wants to play the caster type character in any game I play. Plus, purple is my favorite color. And Medea is adorable. But the thing that really gets to me and maybe talks to my own personal biases, is Ero's involvement. 9 times out of 10, in any story where a woman has been manipulated by or because of a man, she will get the most sympathy of any character from me, often regardless of other factors. Logically, I know her actions are pretty horrifying, and I don't want to excuse them, especially since it seems like she may have been prone to murderous tendencies regardless. But something in my brain gets flipped, and I can't help but view her as more victim than villain. And I'm glad that Fate does give her those few positive experiences.

MY WIFE!!!! She's unfortunately been stuck at bond 15 for over half a year now, but I'll find a way to break the game and get more bond soon.
Reading through some of the comments, some things you missed have already been mentioned, though I still have some things I want to bring up. Her 3rd skill, Circe's Teaching, did not exist when she was introduced in Fate/stay night, and was only added to FGO because they needed every servant to have 3 skills, and I'm convinced that Nasu hates her too much to care about what year 1 development team did to it. I am 99% sure that Circe is never mentioned in Fate/stay night or Fate/hollow ataraxia outside of her cleansing, so that mistake was added on later by someone that probably didn't even do any research.
On a different note, Fate definitely takes a more sympathetic approach to the myth of Medea. Considering what we see Aphrodite do in Olympus, I'm inclined to not blame Medea for killing her brother, as I don't think she quite had control over that. Nasu's iteration of the myth is also explored more in depth in Fate/hollow ataraxia. The plan to kill King Pelias was made by Jason, and Medea shows signs of guilt regarding everything she did after she left Colchis and reluctance to carry out the plan during the demonstration with the sheep. The curse placed on her is broken immediately after the murder of King Pelias and his daughters, pushing her off the edge in terms of mental stability. Meanwhile, Jason condemns her, and even blames her for his failures, and then ultimately betrays her, saying that he never loved her. Despite all this, she's still a good person at heart, generally avoiding senseless murder and actually saving the kids from Atrum, her original master, though her experiences have desensitized her to the point where she will resort to killing if she can justify it, either with some genuine reason or her trademark emotional instability, since she is still characterized as a witch. Basically, my wife is a good person and amazing and cute and perfect and did absolutely nothing wrong.

Admittedly, I'm curious if Medea's relationship with Circe takes more inspiration from the sibling version you mentioned, just with their familial status being the regular aunt & neice version? I know the time they spent together was from before she met Jason.
And yes, as others have mentioned, Medea was supposed to have a route of her own where Shirou finds her instead of Kuzuki, we don't know much, but we know that she would've aged herself down to Medea Lily at some point, and the argon coin(/dragon?) Would've had a human form based off of Medea (or maybe her brother?), and would constantly annoy her, considering her his older sister. Presumably, this also would've dealt with how she COULD summon the dragon, but the necessary materials needed to CONTROL it just didn't even exist in the modern world, likely leading to Shirou tracing them, ala caliburn.
Stay night would've had 7 routes altogether if it was completed, being seperated into 2 disks, the other one being "Fate/Other Night" The cut routes included Illya, Medusa, Medea, and even Shinji, Illya got folded into Heaven's Feel, Medusa's was reworked for Hollow Ataraxia, and Shinji's was ironically left in Stay Night's data, but only 1 gag scene remains (Shirou choosing to team up with him over Rin)

IMO, Medea's revenge by killing her own son was absurd and extremely taboo, and there's nothing to be sympathetic with. However, she was able to get away with it largely because of Jason's affair with Glauce, which was a huge mistake since he was "blessed" by Hera of all people, down to his marriage to Medea. So it can be said that Hera allowed Medea, his wife, to do so for having "betrayed" her like that, and/or it was a mercy from Hera to Medea for being a good chess piece in her grand plan. After all, Hera did ask Aphrodite to make Medea fall in love with Jason in the first place so she would help Jason through all those trials and set her up to be a reward for Jason later on.

No fate mangas that aren’t the source materials of the serie are not considered as canon but more supplemental material aka a u can enjoy them but consider that they aren’t what the writers would take in consideration for any future appearances, this is said by nasu and by type moon. Aka the original author of the story is the one that has a say on the matter it stuff a supplementary material gets carried over, an example of this is medea’s Master in the anime of ubw being adopted and replacing medea’s Old master which didn’t have a design, but yeh when I say canon I don’t mean it in the traditional sense but more of canon is what the writers carry over and 99 percent of manga adaptations of fate aren’t carried over so

This is also the same reason why I have to break up anime footage in these videos - if you use more than a 30-second block of footage from the same show, it gets flagged. I honestly don't have much to say on Medea. However, my opinion on the whole Jason thing is that Jason did nothing wrong.
First off, the situation with Pelos could have been handled differently had Medea not jumped the gun and done what she did. Had she not done so, Hera, who's been in Jason's corner would have likely intervined on his behalf considering she went through the trouble of bringing him this far in the first place. Considering this, Medea potentially ruined Jason's life first. Now before you go on me saying Jason made Medea fall for him, he did not nor did he ask for it, the was all the Gods so Jason's not at fault there, he just took advantage of it as to not die.
Then there goes the married life she had with Jason. She loved him, but Jason likely did that out of obligation to the promise he made to marry her. We have no reason to believe he was happy with it before the oppertunity arose to get out of it. Considering the actions Medea took in her life, who's to say she wasn't overbearing.
Even in Fate, though she seems to have a regular relationship with Kazuki, the same cannot be said for the other person she holds affection for, our resident Saber, Artoria Pendragon. One of Artoria's dislikes happen to be being dressed up, this originates soley from Medea, who forcefully dressed her up in numerous outfits. Even in those spin offs, she actually stalks Saber and has a figurine collection of her. Considering what she did for Jason, I wouldn't be suprised if she behaved more like how she did with Artoria than Kazuki. Taking that into consideration, I'd bet alot of people would want to leave her too.

Jason did nothing wrong" he bailed on her the first chance he got even after having kids with her. Like, we're literally told that Jason was a prick to Medea and we *See* how he treats Medea Lily in FGO (Sending her, the healer, out on the front lines so he doesn't have to fight himself.)
Medea fucked up too, but don't go acting like Jason was innocent in everything that went down. There relationship was fucked for both sides.

@@knucklejoe26 Yeah, the kids she killed to spite him and then sge proceeded to ruin, not only his life, but the lives of everyone else around him at the time. Would YOU be alright with being with someone as unstable as that. Would you say someone SHOULDN'T be able to leave a horrible relationship they didn't even want in the first place because kids are involved. She wasn't abusive sure, but obsessiveness is not a good trait to have either and under that love spell, she was definately like that to Jason.
Also, yeah, he sent her out to fight so he didn't have to but again, Medea Lily was WAY stronger than him. As for any distain he had for her. Need I remind you, she ruined his life and caused the events of his death to happen. Plus she also turned him into a demon pillar in that same story.

Medea Lily absolutely was not stronger what are you on about? He purely did so to save his own skin and out of cowardice.
He did this *before* Medea Lily betrayed him.
Yes Medea killed their kids. Kids *Jason* blatantly didn't give a shit about until *after* Medea had killed them, and even then he was mainly upset for bloodline reasons, not genuine care for the kids.
I never said Medea didn't contribute to their relationship crumbling, but *Jason* also contributed, and even *he* recognizes that he treated Medea like shit.

@@knucklejoe26Bro, the Jason from Okeanos was basically the Saber Jason we have in game right now. That Jason quite litteraly has the argonauts do most of the damage for him, that includes Medea Lily. Jason is more of a commander than a fighter.
Also, Jason still had no obligation to even like Medea. He didn't pursue her, he didn't even want her, the only reason he was stuck with her was because if he didn't agree to marry her, he'd die. He even fufilled said promise even after he was exiled because Medea had Pelos murdered.
He only left her because he had a chance to finally become a king. A position he risked his life for on numerous occasions. All he had to do was leave the loveless marriage he didn't really want in the first place. The kids didn't exactly matter as neither Jason or Medea seemed to care much for thier wellbeing much anyways. It's not like he broke the promise he made to her, he said he'd marry her and nothing else.

Question am I the only one who thinks that when fate has a servant who in their real life lore has done some awful things and they kind of just either act like it didn’t happen or they water it down to where they were the servant aren’t as bad they real life lore tells you I mean for servants like Medea it kind of makes sense but I kind of wish they didn’t have a lot of characters kind of be good guys because not everyone needs to be a good guy and not the “good guys “ are actual good guys because to me it’s kind of interesting when only some of the servants actually acknowledge the bad stuff they did in their life i like see someone opinion on this because I’m the only one who thinks this.
