I work for Alaska Airlines and they excepted the policy is pretty much the same as the other carriers. Most of the issues we encounter are from travelers that are relatively, new or firearm owners that don’t quite do their research. I personally keep a set of locks on me because I’ve helped out a number of travelers over the years. This is a very good post, sir.

Other points: (1) each AIRPORT may have different TSA check in procedures. At LAS (Las Vegas) airport, once you check your firearms you are required to wait nearby for 15 minutes in case TSA has any issue. If they do not come, you can leave after the 15 minutes. At MSP (Minneapolis/St. Paul), they walk you and your firearm/bag to TSA for x-ray inspection. Once inspection is completed and if no issues, you are on your way. (2) After landing, your firearm/bag will be the LAST one off the plane. It will be hand delivered to that airlines' baggage claim office where you will need to show ID to collect it. So, allow extra time before and after flying.
Thank you because I’m flying from Minneapolis to PHX and this is my first time flying with my firearm. Am I able to carry my ammunition in the same safe if it’s in original packaging?
Yes, every airport (and every ticket agent) is different. I’ve been flying with guns for 20+ years, and it seems like each time there is something at least a little different, and sometimes significantly different, than every other time. I definitely prefer the airports where you go directly to a TSA screening point so that you are present when they screen your bag. That way you know that it has cleared and can hand them your keys directly if they want them so you don’t end up with your locks cut or your bag left behind.
Got a trip in November to Hunt Elk and Mule deer. Came here for advise, and got exactly what I was looking for. To my surprise, you bought your locks from an Ace Hardware that I'm an owner of! Good ole Woodbury TN! Thank you sir for the advice and business!
Another quick tip that I have learned from flying with rifles, when you declare that you are traveling with firearms, you only want to declare how many bags, cases, or containers have the guns in them. Even if you have ten rifles in one case, you only need to declare one firearm. The airline companies only go by the amount of cases that have guns in them, unless the airline specifically says there is a limit of firearms per case. So if you have a case with two guns in it, you only declare that you have one firearm
I once flew from San Jose to Salt Lake with about 4 guns. It was bussy they had me show that my guns were unloaded at the counter so, I made a show of it. When I turned around to go to my gate the line had backed wayy from me. on the return flight the agent seen the firearms sticker on my bag ask me if they were unloaded I answered yes and he sent me on my way.
@@chethaynes5802 The best part of it was as I waited for my flight a lady approched me and asked if I went to shooting comptions I said no I just liked to shoot things nobody even sat next to me.

I travel a lot with firearms and work for an airline. Most airlines ask you to wait 20 minutes-ish before going thru security, if TSA wants to open your gun case.
"Only the passenger should retain the key or combination to the lock unless TSA personnel request the key to open the firearm container to ensure compliance with TSA regulations. I’ve found my cheaper harbor freight Apache 9800 case to be a good tsa approved case. It’s pretty rugged, comes out to about 52”, can fit a couple rifles, scopes, few mags, and ammo. Also has wheels so you don’t have to carry it and all for about $150. Using key locks instead of combination locks was good advice. If you have to open it it’s more convenient to grab a key than to try and remember a combination.

Since this video title specifically mentions Delta, viewers should be aware that at least at some airports Delta is enforcing a policy different from that listed on their website. Previously it has always been acceptable (and apparently still is with all other airlines) to use a large hard sided container, such as a Pelican case, for your luggage and simply place the gun in this along with other items (clothes, camera equipment, etc.) and lock the whole case. On Delta’s website this option is explicitly listed as allowed: “Firearms must be packed in a locked manufacturer's hard-sided container specifically designed for the firearm, a locked hard-sided gun case or a locked hard-sided piece of luggage.” However, I have seen reports from others, and also experienced myself, that for the last several months Delta has not been allowing this option. Instead, they are requiring that you use a small locked case that then is placed inside your unlocked luggage, even though their site goes on to say this: “Handguns may be packed in a locked hard-sided gun case, and then packed inside an unlocked soft-sided piece of luggage. However, a Conditional Acceptance Tag must be used in this case.” If you don’t know this before you get to the airport and try to check your locked hard sided luggage with a gun inside, but not also inside a smaller locked gun case, you will be turned away. If you can’t return to your car and leave your gun behind, and get back in time, you will miss your flight and not be eligible for any refund of your fair. While using this method to fly with firearms is legal and has been very popular with people who either transport multiple firearms, or other valuable equipment along with their firearm, for decades, and even though their own written policy still posted on their website explicitly allows it, Delta is barring this method of transport at least at several, if not all, airports.
I just flew with handguns locked inside a gardsided gun case with a rifle and locked. With Delta. But I believe you that some airports may be squirrely
@@WHOTEEWHO I’ve only ever had it happen once, back in July, and they didn’t say anything on my return flight, so I thought it was it was just my local airport which has some other strict gun rules as well. But since then I’ve run across three other people, each at different airports in different states, who’ve all had the same experience with Delta. It also sounds like their issue is putting guns in a case with non-gun items, such as clothes, non-gun related equipment, etc., so that might be why you were okay.
Just got back from round trip New Hampshire , Chicago, LAX, Tuscon, LAX, Charlotte NC, Manchester. So the case I bought says it’s TSA certified But it only has one lock built in Is this ok? I’d hate to get to check in and can’t board cuz the case really wasn’t TSA approved.
Just a tip, i've been on many flights with guns and it makes things easier if you always use TSA locks. They wont have to ask you for your key in case they must open your case. They can open any TSA lock with their special keys. You just wait until they're satisfied and they'll give you a thumbs up or thumbs down.
TSA website does not recommend TSA locks. Also according to the site you should only be the one handling the keys. Never give keys to the TSA. The TSA should not also be touching or handling your firearms. You can see the actual working of the Federal Laws on the site.
I've never traveled with firearms, I guess it always seemed harder than it really is. When I was younger and my dad was still alive I always wanted to go to Africa to hunt, now days it's too expensive and almost everything there is on the endangered species list so that sorta killed that plan
Very informative video for sure !! If You have fired any of your handguns day before or the same day and not scrubbed your hands down the gun powder residue will show up when you go through The testing thing they will swab your hands and look at you suspiciously when you fly the rest of your life 😂 Wa Yea :)
It won't. They must not test for gunpowder. I travelled wearing the same shirt that I wore to the range the day before, and the casing that landed in my shirt pocket without me realizing it didn't even set off alarms. I was traveling through Salt Lake City back to CA.
I believe that is the weight of approximately (4) -50 rnd boxes of 9mm. Of course it depends on the bullet weight, etc. They also are trying to prevent a significantly •HEAVY• end on long rifle cases. If you were to pack 22 lbs or so of 5.56 in one end of your rifle case, it could be awkward to handle/load on the aircraft. I think they’re trying to prevent working their employees too hard!

Can't give you the perfect answer. Key thing is that it cannot be easily pryed into. Some may allow it aome may not
This video is definitely a good one to know .. 😉
bing bangs and boo lots! Im stealing that lexicon.
Black powder is very static sensitive!
How much extra time does this typically take. I know it'll vary from place to place I'm flying aa from msy to Phoenix
Just depends. Sometimes takes zero extra time
Any kind of paperwork needed?
No
Thank you for the Bing bang info brother and the boolots
Just a tip, i've been on many flights with guns and it makes things easier if you always use TSA locks. They wont have to ask you for your key in case they must open your case. They can open any TSA lock with their special keys. You just wait until they're satisfied and they'll give you a thumbs up or thumbs down.
TSA website does not recommend TSA locks. Also according to the site you should only be the one handling the keys. Never give keys to the TSA. The TSA should not also be touching or handling your firearms. You can see the actual working of the Federal Laws on the site.
I imagine they wouldn’t be very amused if I used combination locks and set the code to ‘187’. 😂
This will be interesting to see what Americans have to do, asan Aussie I am only understand a little bit what we have to do
I've never traveled with firearms, I guess it always seemed harder than it really is. When I was younger and my dad was still alive I always wanted to go to Africa to hunt, now days it's too expensive and almost everything there is on the endangered species list so that sorta killed that plan
Yea weird how no loose ammo
I'd wrap those ARs up a little better. That plano is likely to be chucked into and off the plane...
Great family. Very cute.
Can you Be 18 and declare a pistol?
Not sure
Have airports ever asked for proof of ownership of the firearms?
No. There is no such thing
Anybody know why 11 pounds is the magic number for ammo?
I believe that is the weight of approximately (4) -50 rnd boxes of 9mm. Of course it depends on the bullet weight, etc.
They also are trying to prevent a significantly •HEAVY• end on long rifle cases. If you were to pack 22 lbs or so of 5.56 in one end of your rifle case, it could be awkward to handle/load on the aircraft. I think they’re trying to prevent working their employees too hard!
Stop with the bing bong gun it’s a gun it’s a gun
Airlines clearly suck at checked luggage. 😂
Can imagine them getting " Lost"...
If they lose it , you call the atf. They’ll find it. Record your serial number just in case. ATF will have no choice except to investigate it
Bing Bangs 🤣
Such serious subject he has to be "cool" to use the s..d jargon.
I so not follow what you are trying to say
@WHOTEEWHO thanks for the video but first of all its useless. We can find those pages ourselves. If you have your own experience please share it. Secondly in legal instructions can you skip your jargon? Boolot bangbangs.... what are you 5 years old? thanks
@caesar5555 most people are too lazy to look all of this up. I am providing a FREE SERVICE putting all of the info in one place - not sure why anyone would complain about that. As for your other complaint - I do everything for a reason....in this case it is so the computer bots do not flag my videos. I have uploaded thousands of videos here and I know what I am doing 👍👍. Thank you for watching.
@@caesar555599% of RUclips how to’s can be “easily looked up” wtf 😂 check the views.

Bullets have to be in the orignal box.
nope; just ammo in appropriate box. you can have 9mm with 380 etc Just can't be loose or in mags.
not necessarily. In a plastic or metal case that is made to store ammunition. just not loose in a box
Well thats what the workers of American and Delta told me they seemed new, but ok cool. Thanks I travel with two rifles. I was unsure with the metal cases or plastic cases. I knew something didn't sound right.
@@ericfisherii73 A good Pelican case with same key locks or combination. I would keep a spare set of locks in my carry on just in case TSA cuts them after they Xray & clear bag then page you over intercom or call cell.
Also have cell # on tags. Blue State Airports tend jerk gun owners the most. But doable. Don't Drink Booze your on Camera & possess the keys to Gun Case. Just like having keys to a car that's not running.
@@ni9465 ok cool Thanks.
Carry on. Ya. If someone else handle it. No way. No way in heck, would I let them put there hands on my firearms. You know they are gonna steal em . Don't do it.
You cannot carry on ya on an airplane.....
@@WHOTEEWHO 10-4. Great videos!!!!!
Be VERY careful if shipping guns from AK across Canada . I had all my rifles bolts & scopes stolen from a plywood crate. No luck getting any back NRA NO HELP.
Yikes
Call the atf….
👍👍👍👍✌
Hey Gary
👍 🇺🇲
👍🇺🇸
So carry the guns and buy the bullets there......got it!
Huh? You can also carry your ammo
@@WHOTEEWHO I am on the way to an instructors conference and will need 500 rnds 9mm, 500 rnds 12ga, and 500 rnds 223.....I think that's going to exceed the 11 lbs restrictions. 😂
Could have been a good video if you weren’t trying to be a comedian.
I don't recall trying to be a comedian. Maybe I was 🤷♂️
Just say guns and bullets
Oh god this bing bang is seriously pissing me off. Dude should redo this video and talk like an adult
There is a purpose. So my videos do not get flagged as inappropriate by the bots. 👍👍
@@WHOTEEWHO that’s kind of dumb. I’ve seen literally thousands of videos where people use the word “gun” or “pistol” or “weapon”.
@@NASTYVEGASNATE and most of those are age restricted, YT changes their minds a lot and retroactively applies the restrictions to videos that have been uploaded for years.
