  • In this video we compare the AF performance and image quality of the Fuji 100-400mm lens against the Canon 100-400mm Mk1 lens on a Fringer Pro ll adapter.
Will the Canon lens perform as well as the native Fuji lens.
The Fuji 100-400mm is on my X-T3 and the Canon lens is on my X-S10 with a Fringer Pro ll adapter and I am testing them in a real world wildlife situation at Tom Way Photography's Fox Hide.
If you would like to visit this Hide here is a link to Tom's website www.tomway.co.uk/index.php/wo... he is a excellent photographer very knowledgeable and will give lots of great advice.

I did own the canon 100-400 years ago, I sold it and got a tamron 150-600 for my full frame canon. I then started using a canon 7DII instead. I moved to the Fuji system for a lighter set up. I purchased the Fuji 100-400 and love it. I still have my canon full frame and a few nice canon lenses so I'm considering getting the fringer mark two so that I can use those lenses. I like both brands but mainly use the canon these days for portraits only. The Fuji XT3 with five lenses in total is my go to camera, love it

The Tracking Focus on the fuji even the XH2s is really way behind the competition. I have used the Fringer with the XT$ and XH2s with Nikon 500 pf f5.6 and 300 f4 pf and they work as well as the fuji 100-400. But stay away from the AF-C tracking and subject detection except with the subject fills more than 60% of the frame. The eye detection on animals and birds is erratic en not reliable. I use zone again if it covers the subject or different size boxes. The Animal subject detection in my view is better than birds especially smaller birds if they only fill small part of the frame. I have shot these two camera's with the 100-400 fuji and the Nikon Pf lenses extensively and tested all kinds of focus settings as the fuji system is "complicated and some setting unreliable, but if you understand the limitations and the strength it produces fantastic results. I love fuji it is a fun system, produce great results but have its issues, that makes it fun. I got bored with Sony as it is a really sterile experience. I also use Nikon for many years and the Z9 is amazing fast and make up for the instances where Fuji struggle. Shooting them side by side is great fun with great results

Thanks for the video. I primarily use a 5DIV body for wildlife with a 600mm f4L lens, but I also use the 100-400L (mine is Version 2). I bought a Fuji X-T3 to use as a walkabout system for family outings and the like, and I also bought the Fringer adaptor. The plan for the Fringer was to have two systems on the go when I photograph wildlife - the 5DIV with the 600mm as my main rig, and the X-T3 with the Canon 100-400mm-plus Fringer for closer subjects. Unfortunately, I have an issue with the Fringer - I can shoot for a few minutes with it, but then it randomly starts hunting back and forth before locking up completely and I can't do anything with it. The only thing I can do is remove the battery from my camera, and start over until it happens again. I have updated the Fringer firmware but that didn't help. It's disappointing really - I've never had an issue with my other Canon lenses on the Fringer, only the 100-400mm. I am going to have another go with it, but with stabilisation turned off to see if that is the problem - but really it's not an ideal solution.

Hi thank you for your comment, it sounds like you have a faulty adapter as I have used the Mk2 version of the 100-400mm on my X-T3 and Fringer with no issues. But you could also try cleaning the lens & adapter contacts as I have had that issue with Fuji glass and that cured that.

    • @mikebrownhill4662

@@GrandadsReviews Cheers David. I'll clean the contacts again to see if that works. It might be the lens contacts - I know I cleaned the Fringer contacts but can't remember if I did the lens! If it works, then that would explain why the Fringer works perfectly with my other Canon lenses :-)

Thank you for your comment. The X-T3/X-T30 do not have IBIS if you mean in lens stabilization like IS for Canon then yes that still works and actually works very well, on the X-T4 and X-S10 which have IBIS this also works with this adapter.

But if I do get a chance to try them on the X-T30 I will do.

Two questions... 1) Is the adapter weather resistant? 2) With the adapter and Canon on, do you still get a FF equivalent length of 150-600mm as with the Fuji lens?

    • @GrandadsReviews

The adapter is not weather resistant but I’ve not had any issue with it when photographing in the rain, and yes the focal length remains the same FF equivalent the only time that would change us if you use a speed booster.

Indeed, a former Canon shooter (35 years) who made the switch in 2017, selling off ALL or trading of my Canon gear...At the time, there was no Fringer adapter, had there been, I might have kept some of my ‘L’ glass.
I have been looking at the Fujinon 100-400 over the past year, as more of my assignments involve fast-paced subjects. My 50-140mm, is stunningly fast, even with a 1.4x or even on rare situations, a 2x converters, still a native 100-400 range glass is preferred. So, what was your hit/miss rate with this test? I am debating whether to get the Fuji 100-400 or wait until the 150-600 is officially released. That said, if the 150-600 is over $3k and I suspect it will be, then it will be the 100-400mm.

    • @GrandadsReviews
      @GrandadsReviews  2 года назад +1

The Fuji 100-400mm had a very good hit rate only poor lighting and lack of contrast in the subject caused any problems I would highly recommend the Fuji 100-400mm, the trouble with waiting for the 150-600mm is even if it’s not overpriced availability will be the biggest problem

5:00 Is that tracking on your X-S10? Because my Fuji X-T3 doesn't have the tracking option you selected there. But while I've stayed up-to-date with the firmware versions, I've not read an updated manual and still have the 2018 one that doesn't say anything about tracking.

I shoot both Fujifilm and Canon and I have experience with both of these lens. Something you didn’t talk about in your comparison is the look of the background. I shoot Elk and other wildlife in the Smoky Mountains. To my eyes the Fujifilm 100-400mm give somewhat of a swirling effect to the out of focus Area while the Canon 100-400 has a nice even blurred background.
I owned the Canon for many years and sold it. I have rented the Fujifilm but I am having trouble deciding on the purchase of the Fujifilm. I might purchase another Canon 100-400 instead.

You are correct about the swirling with the Fujifilm 100-400mm. I've used Canon 100-400 v2, Canon 300mm F2.8, Olympus 300m F4, Nikon 200-500mm, The fujifilm 100-400m has some weird issues. Noticed that 99% of my first continues shot is the best, the others are always blurry or very soft. The Fuji 100-400mm has very slow focus for BIF, I compare it to the Nikon 200-500mm Focus, But the Nikon 200-500mm was sharper. I use the X-T30 and ordered the X-T4, hoping it makes a differents in image quality. (For those people wondering settings, CF. Hi I’m not buying two of the same focal length lens Fuji loaned me the 100-400mm for free, weight wise the Fuji 100-400 weighs approximately the same as the Canon lens so no advantage there, the reason I’m getting Canon long glass is because they are cheaper and there are a lot more available secondhand plus L glass is known for its quality. Fuji glass is excellent and on-par if not better in some instances but availability secondhand and the high cost makes them hard to get on a tight budget if I could afford all Fuji glass that’s what I would buy so thought a video series looking at Canon glass as a affordable alternative would be of interest to my viewers.
