He actually said "No Englaish" - which is true. I don't speak Englaish, either. Does anyone speak Englaish? Perhaps it's like English with a French accent, but I can't be sure...
I started off using the zhongyi when I first shifted to the fuji system, I picked the canon ef mount version (although I didn't have any canon glass, it was much cheaper to buy small pk, om and m42 to ef adapters instead of buying multiple focal reduces, and the ef mount seemed to have the shortest flange distance to adapt to, with readily available adapters). I found the lenses adapted with the zhongyi actually produced sharper images than just using hollow adaptors (I guess due to not magnifying any lens defects towards the center), so it may vary between lens and adapter combinations, it also 'appeared' sharper than the rokinon/samyang 12mm (only other lens I had at the time). I've ended up shooting landscapes, events and even some studio portraits with the setup, even after investing in fuji glass, the adapted lenses still have a place in the kit for jobs (especially the OM zuiko glass). Another point to add is after 3 years of heavy use, the lens release lever on the adapter fell off. Was great to hear your findings!
I once combined an XT2 with the Metabones Ultra II and my two Voigtlaender SLII lenses (Nikon mount) 40mm F2 Ultron and 58mm 1,4 Nokton. I shot event reportage and portraits and had a blast. I confirm some weird going on at the edges what appeared more like a ring of decrease of contrast . But man, that added a sort of 3D pop and special sauce. You can`t make that straight with a modern combo. I liked it a lot.
Good to see what others can do when they come to my hometown. I’ve lived in Vegas all my life and I feel like things around here aren’t interesting to me. But I do police it when other photographers come and see the city from their point of view.
I notice the Zhongyi images seem to be consistently sharper in the corners than the center and have to ask: could it be that you slightly missed focus on the center? Seems to me like the Zhongyi is actually decently sharp but suffers from quite a bit of field curvature (leading to sharp corners while focus in the center is off by a few millimeters). This would match my own experience with a Zhongyi adapter I purchased a few years ago. Acceptable sharpness and aberrations (IMO!) but significant optical distortion.
I have the same Nikkor 24mm f/2.8 (correct me if I'm wrong) and a Zhongyi LTii on an XT-3 - I was shocked at how sharp and beautiful the images are coming out. Maybe I was expecting hellfire and brimstone? I mean, I did some mindless street shots outside of B&H just for kicks, as I live in NYC, and I just literally couldn't believe how nice. I also have a metabones, which is nice too, but it's for Minolta-FX only, like this review "apples to apples" is hard but it's what I wanted as I have and like a lot of Minolta glass. I'd imagine some lenses and combos have different sweet spots is what it is.
My Zhongyi is quietly sobbing next to me while I'm saying it was still one of the best buys for my vintage glass. I'm not pixelpeeping nor looking for perfection, mostly shooting portraits, and my subjective impression has always been that the photos look clearer, sharper and punchier than with my standard adapters, so much that I haven't used those anymore for years. With my Helioses it also makes the difference of "crop and have almost no swirl" and "full swirl". I don't think it matters but I'm using the EOS adapter in combination with PK and M42 adapter rings on my Fuji, but I doubt the glass in that one is any different. Metabones is simply way too expensive for a "dumb" focal reducer, that money I'd rather invest into a native lens.
I use the m42 Zhongyi LensTurbo adapter, the Metabones was not an option due to price; my research led me to believe Metabones was slightly better, but not so much it mattered; and with the LensTurbo II, they fixed some aberration issues of the first one. Kippon I didn’t see much positive in comparison reviews, and there was no m42 Viltrox when I looked. I’ve used it on a variety of m42 lenses, just to play with, and haven’t done much in the way of pixel peeping apart from some tests for sharpness of the lens in the centre wide open and stopped down; some of these old lenses are a bit soft with loss of contrast wide open, considered an asset for portraiture of the time. Even half a stop makes a big difference in character sometimes. Currently, I’m using it mainly on my Tair-11a, which to my surprise, is an amazingly good 135mm F2.8 prime (149mm f2 with the LensTurbo on Fuji) with really nice bokeh (even through the speedbooster), but then it seems it’s a focal length that is easier to make great lenses for, since a lot of manufacturers have really good 135mm. My Jupiter-9s are m39, so can’t test them, but they are plenty sharp as they are. The Helios-44-2 bokeh is nice, haven’t done any comparison with and without adapter, so can’t say if there’s any more nervousness. It is a character trait of some vintage lenses naturally, and of course some people, in particular film makers, seek them out for their ‘vintage’ character, esp as it comers to flare. Now and then I bring a vintage lens or two with me when it is nothing too fast-moving, like a leisurely photowalk. Harder to do sneaky street shots with vintage, as it takes more time and looking through the viewfinder to focus, no from-the-hip, unless you trust in preset f8 aperture and distance. I use my Fuji lenses for that.
To really analyze the effect of each speed booster you would need to compare photos with the same lens with and without the speed booster. Ideally on a full frame body and on fuji with speed booster.
The kIpon baveyes you are using is the version 1. I owned both version 1 and version 2. The version 2 is sharper than version 1. I also owns ZY Optics/Lens Turbo I and II. I really don’t understand why Metabones never made EOS-FX Speedbooster adapter.
Hi Donald - I’ve been looking for reviews of the Mk2 Kipon for Fuji. Do you have any examples or further comments regarding performance versus the Mk1 or the others reviewed here e.g. Metabones? Thanks!
@@27Righty All the optics inside the MKI version of Kipon is the same no matter which mount. MK2 is a lot better but I am not sure if M42-FX version was made.
Hello Donald, could you please post pictures of the Kipon Baveyes 0.7x mark 2 and Zhongyi Lens Turbo II side by side? It's impossible to find a review or a test of the Baveyes Mark II on the internet!
I would also appreciate if you could might share some comparison shots between the mk1 and mk2 version of the Kipon. As others have already said, there's literally no information about the new version on the internet.
I never gave speed boosters even a thought when I locked on in getting a fuji cam.Reason? Fuji 16mm f1.4,no way I'd abandon that. I also believe that putting stuff between the body and lens always have a penalty somewhere. Plus, those darn FF lenses are heavy.
Thanks for a very informative and objective review. I have recently been using the K&F concept Nikon to Fuji adapter for my old Nikon lenses and I am generally satisfied.
I have a Nikon lens to M43 adapter and it uses a two ring aperture control like on the Metabones adapter you used. This is not a new design, and actually it did not have anything to do with video. The two ring design goes back to the earliest "single lens reflex" cameras. Some of the early lenses did not have aperture coupling to the camera. For this type of design, use the clicking ring to chose the F-stop you want to use for the picture. The other ring actually controls the aperture blades. Open it up to focus the lens and then "gently" close the aperture by turning the aperture control ring to the stop point that you have selected when you take the picture. Of course, the reason for using this design on some of the Nikon adapters is actually to do with the way Nikon apertures work on some of their lenses. I don't use this type of setup often, so I have to re-learn it when I use it. I suppose that if I had a lot of lenses that worked that way it might not be so bad, but yes, I have forgotten to close the aperture down before taking pictures, which is a pain....
I use a metabones 0.71x speedbooster with Fuji X-H1 and Contax Carl Zeiss lenses, When I get the focus on the nail. Then image quality is exceptional across the frame. The improvements in depth of field, give full frame pro perspective. Not experienced image quality issues.
There is a cheap adapter between Nikon F and Canon EF. I use it to shoot Nikon glass with the Viltrox EF speedbooster on my Fuji cameras. Bought the Viltrox as I have a lot of Canon glass, but can use the very few but nice Nikon lenses that I still keep. The quality of the adapter is very good to my eyes using both Nikon and Canon glass and it seems to carry some of the vintage glass character over to the Fuji shooting experience, which is exactly what I want.
Great rundown! It seems like speed boosters are probably the future, but they're still getting ready for prime time. I'm really intrigued by focal reducers for medium format lenses to FF cameras. If only these companies could step up the glass game ...
Thanks for doing this video, I have a bunch of Nikkor vintage lenses that I was wondering how can I use it on my X-T3. But after watching your video I had change my mind, I love sharpening, so I guess if I buy any of these speed booster it will be another piece of equipment that I won’t use. Thanks again
Instead of using a speed booster with my Nikkor 20mm F2.8, I opted to buy the Rokinon 12mm F2.0 wide angle lens. It is 1 stop faster, even wider (18mm equivalent) and probably results in less distortion.
I've been using A Zhongyi Lens Turbo II for my M42 lenses, and I've found the image quality to be excellent... I wonder if you had a bad copy? I've heard a few reports that the ring that holds the front glass element can loosen and become unscrewed and affect overall sharpness. (It might also explain why the edges were sharper than the center in one of your examples.) Tightening them back up fixes it.
Subscribed :) thanks for creating consistent and high quality videos for us. As a RUclipsr myself I know how much work goes into it. I'm looking to switch from Sony to Fuji with the xt4 so these videos are valuable! Cheers
Seeing if there is any news on the Speedbooster front I came across this review again and after years of using the Zhongyi on Sony Nex and Fuji I now see why I don't like it. It should be replaced with a new one. Things to consider: Speedboosters work better with longer lenses. 50/1.4 and 85/1.4 vintage are the target audience in my view. For wide angle manual lenses on mirrorless always use lenses specifically designed for mirrorless as due to the short flange compared to SLR they are much easer to design and therefore give excellent results for little money (e.g. Samyang). To really compare performance use the same subject size with and without booster (adjust the distance). Sharpness with same subject size might even improve as more glass is used and compressed to the smaller sensor despite the extra glass of the booster. Also to my personal experience and other reviews the bokeh will significantly improve due to a) introducing more softness (I have never seen the "doubling" mentioned in this review and b) the bokeh being dependent on foreground/background distance relation and with the booster you will have to get closer to the subject and therefore the background will relatively move further away, bocome more blurry. Again, there are nowadays reviews out there comparing the same lens on Fullframe vs. Mirrorless-Speedbooster at same subject size which better expose the real pros and cons of using speedbosters. Btw. Using Minolta 58/1.2 with Zhongiy (and maybe everything else) is not satisfying in my view. Therefore: you will like speedbosters with anything 50+ mm and 1.4+ F-Stop.
If AF and focal range is really important, I prefer to buy an used nikon Body.... For now I decided to buy a simple adapter for my X-H1. Thank you very much.
Very helpful. Been building a collection of vintage Nikon cameras and lenses (been on ebay a lot during lock down) and wondering about using the Nikon lenses on my XT-3. You answered my questions. Hold off and just shoot film like I originally intended.
Did they stop making the metabones speedbooster XL 0.64 for fiji X-mount? Seems like on their website, and in the ebay link in the description, the XL 0.64 is only for MFT cameras, not for APS-C. The only version that looks to be available for fuji x is the ULTRA 0.71 version 😞
Shouldn't it be possible to adapt the Nikon lens to EF on the viltrox?! I believe to remember the flange distance fits .... Great video, thx! was hesitating recently about buying a speedbooster, feels like a good decision not getting one. Will stick to my regular m42 adapter :)
@@AndrewGoodCamera yes it would :) but your results are anyhow pretty consistent w all the scattered reviews I could find of the bunch. So I think it's totally ok, still great to have them all side by side. Cheers!
You could also have added a 5$-adapter for Nikon glass on Canon bodies an compare apples to apples.... that would have been really helpful and objective.
I have the Kipon and it is awesome, no such problem as you describe Yes, there is fringing but that is the easiest to fix in post I think you had a bad copy Also used with my sony camera the viltrox and the Zhongyi Ii. The viltrox for the M42 mount lenses was a joy to use Also: with some of the vintage glass, the speed booster actually improved contrast, like the awesome Revuenon 55 1.4. For the photography I do, speed boosters are perfect 👌
Late in the game. I'm moving toward square format on Fuji. I have a feeling I'll be getting the best of the lens and any adapter. It will also shut down lens distortion on my wide primes, and of course deal with vignetting. A win win, as they say.
Excellent comparison. Thanks! could you please review the Kipon Baveyes 0.7x mark 2 ? I can't find any test on the internet for this speedbooster. Thanks again.
Last year, I finally got a "focal reducer" that brings out the character of the old and new manual glass I use: a Sony A7ii. :p This also helped to free up all my Fuji cameras for using with the wonderful Fuji lenses I have. :) I am seriously thinking about replacing the A7ii for the Nikon Z6. I have only one E-mount lens and that lens will work on the Z6.
"No English"... I thought I was the only one that said that!!! LMAO!!!! Once again you have manage to go to the one location I have google earth! That 'ghost town' is a gold mining town back in the day! If you this were a duel shoot with Denae... I would have voted for you! Hahaha! Awesome photos Andrew! One of my dream shoots I need to fulfill for sure. I'm still laughing out loud at the lady who kept on insisting on having you take their picture! Hahahaha!
Haha. Yes, pretending not to speak English is my most important street photography technique. Yes, you need to shoot there. And when you do, let me know. I'm right on the way!
Thanks for putting this together. Very valuable - I think I will continue using vintage glass on vintage cameras, and modern glass on modern cameras. Have experimented with "ordinary" adapters and the novelty effect of using old glass on new cameras wears off fast (at least for me).
Thanks for the informative video! I don't think I will bother with speed boosters, I rather deal with the crop than all the image degradation. Or I could just buy a lot of film for the same cost :D
Great video, the results I expected, unfortunately. Love vintage Nikon glass, O 35mm & Q 135 3.5 are my favorites. I miss my wa glass being wide, buttercup will have to suck it up & buy one of the fuji 16s
Thats great, as dop's often work with downtuned lenses to get less image sharpness in the corners like some anamorphics have, a cheap speedbooster Is the way to go 😊
I guess it's all relative. If you're fine with what a speedbooster does to a photo in general, they are probably all fine. And it wouldn't surprise me at all that there would be wide variance with the Zhongyi lens.
same. and X-T3 with a vintage Nikkor 24mm f2.8. Exceptional is the word. Almost shocking. I guess with all the negative reviews I was already prepared to accept what many claim are such a huge hit, and when I didn't, relieved. I think tolerances may vary also (they even do with lenses if we're being honest) and some good and bad combinations are bound.

I am waiting for the X-H2.. and it'd probably be a good combo..for low light video. ;) Cheers from Portugal, Andrew.
Not sure if somebody mentioned this or not, I am not going to read all the comments to figure it out. Anyhow..... You are better off with the Canon version of that adapter anyways, Canon has a shorter flange distance, what does that mean?... It means you can add other adapters to the focal reducer and still use it... Also, your one video shows you lile the OM 50mm, Olympus amd Nikon F have the longest flange distance of any of the normally adaptable lenses. You can pick up the OM to canon ef(eos) adapter for real cheap and use the Olympus OM lenses as well as the Nikon F lenses. In fact, for anybody considering a focal reducer, if you can get the canon ef(eos) version, it allows you to use any legacy lens, by 1 extra dumb adapter for whatever mount you want.
From 6:46 I think you had some typos - those were shot at 50, not 24 mm - right? Thanks for the comparison, I was searching for a SB for a modern FF Sigma 35mm 1.4 to maximize blur. But I think I will stay with my 23mm and 16mm 1.4 for now. They are just perfect in size and quality 👍
I've been thinking of getting a speedboster for older glass. Thing is though, with older lenses the edges are what usually perform the worst so is it worth it for APS-C and image quality when all the crappy bits of that image aren't in frame? By design a crop sensor only see the best parts of a FF lens. Something to think about.
I had a brilliant idea of perhaps using my EF glass on a Fuji camera that I like, with a speed booster, and the 7 year old in me that was bouncing off the walls at the thought of DOF of a FF and even more light than on FF did not take into account that the image projected onto the sensor will be of lesser quality than that on FF. I mean, the booster has something like 5 glass elements, right, none of which are absolutely perfect, the alignment isn't absolutely perfect, and the imperfections quickly add up and multiply? It's like, it's great, as a novelty, a special shoot, but definitely not as your usual camera setup...
haven't watched the video, just want to say the Lens Turbo II is performing great on my XP1 nad I would recommend it (even htough I haven't tried any other booster)
I am bit late to this video, but i'm wondering if you have tested the speedboosters on the x-pro3? Because i'm looking into getting one for my nikkor lenses but I have heard of the speedboosters can damage the plastic around the lens-release button. I haven't found any info about this anywhere. Great video btw!
I want to use both my new and old nikon lenses with the upcoming pro3 I don't know which speedbooster to get. It seems like there's still no good enough option.
Metabones is the only brand I would consider. It actually makes a FF lens sharper in the center wide open on my APS-C camera than if the lens was mounted without the speed booster.
Who wants to use any of these when peeps on the outside are out of focus compared to the person in the middle? :( what..? thanks for this video though and great shots in that old scrap yard in Vegas...love the music also...

@@alexbormanbou As accurate and quick as my hand / eye coordination.
@@julesfisher3551 Right! . I didn't realize you were using manual lenses.
@@alexbormanbou Always used manual lenses. So learnt long time ago drift focus.
My Viltrox is definitely more buggy than the Kipon I had. Which is a bit weird since my m4/3 Viltrox and their 85mm have worked so well.
That's right. I forgot Kipon makes an AF version for EF.
very well made informative video, thank you for taking the time to make it
Holy moly, that first area with the cars and what not looked amazing! What a location! Wonder if it’s all still there.
Yup. Still there
There is a cheap adapter between Nikon F and Canon EF.
6:32 kkkk, very smart, as a japanese descendant I use this with inconvenient people...
Great video. Lots of awesome information here. Thanks so much for sharing this!
"No English" hahahaha I am using this one next time!
It's my most valuable street photography technique. :)
@@AndrewGoodCamera similar to Henri Cartier Bresson's "decisive moment"
Andrew uses the "No English" technique
Thank this video, i found speedbooster suitable for me.
Instead of using a speed booster with my Nikkor 20mm F2.8, I opted to buy the Rokinon 12mm F2.0 wide angle lens. It is 1 stop faster, even wider (18mm equivalent) and probably results in less distortion.
The music and photos.....fire
Thank you!
Thanks. I never knew these existed.
Me neither 🙂
You can convert Nikon to EF with a simple adapter then use a EF speedbooster. :)
Thank you for great, great content. It's appreciated.
Thanks for the honest information.
I wonder the same. Has there really been a .64 version? That would give a negative crop compared to full frame!!
anyone else know somehting about this?
I think it's a mistake. If you watch the video, you can read "ULTRA" on the metabones, which looks like the usual .71 model
Shouldn't it be possible to adapt the Nikon lens to EF on the viltrox?! I believe to remember the flange distance fits .... Great video, thx! was hesitating recently about buying a speedbooster, feels like a good decision not getting one. Will stick to my regular m42 adapter :)
Wow you're right! If only I had known that before this video. Haha. That would have made things simpler.
I have the Kipon and it is awesome, no such problem as you describe
Yes, there is fringing but that is the easiest to fix in post
I think you had a bad copy
Also used with my sony camera the viltrox and the Zhongyi Ii. The viltrox for the M42 mount lenses was a joy to use
Also: with some of the vintage glass, the speed booster actually improved contrast, like the awesome Revuenon 55 1.4.
Good idea!
Excellent comparison. Thanks! could you please review the Kipon Baveyes 0.7x mark 2 ? I can't find any test on the internet for this speedbooster. Thanks again.
I would also appreciate this a lot! As others have already said, there's literally no information about the new version on the internet.
Last year, I finally got a "focal reducer" that brings out the character of the old and new manual glass I use: a Sony A7ii. :p
This also helped to free up all my Fuji cameras for using with the wonderful Fuji lenses I have. :)
I am seriously thinking about replacing the A7ii for the Nikon Z6. I have only one E-mount lens and that lens will work on the Z6.
I came here for info about the focal reducers. Went away laughing about "no English" 😂😂
Very informative and well explained. Thanks man
Great video, the results I expected, unfortunately. Love vintage Nikon glass, O 35mm & Q 135 3.5 are my favorites. I miss my wa glass being wide, buttercup will have to suck it up & buy one of the fuji 16s
Thats great, as dop's often work with downtuned lenses to get less image sharpness in the corners like some anamorphics have, a cheap speedbooster Is the way to go 😊
i use Zhongyi turbo ii with my xt3 and i find the image quality exceptional, maybe you got a bad copy. thank you for the video.

Helpful. Thank you.
hadnt been here for quite a while, but i'm not surpirsed to realizing that we still seem to agree on mostly everyhing.. you share your opinion, on.

I wouldnt find these to be a good solution..
But ..as i own a handful of D series Nikon lenses.. i would give the Metabones a try.
Its definitely a tool on one's arsenal.
Lets hope Viltrox bring an update soon. I am waiting for the X-H2.. and it'd probably be a good combo..for low light video.
;)
Cheers from Portugal, Andrew.
Why not just get a Nikon to EF adapter to use on the Viltrox? They're like, 5 bucks.
exactly like tf
Flange distance
beats are fire! lets go!
Wonderful, thanks so much!
what did you use to film your 3rd person street shots? I really like it.
Hey! a link to that red strap would be great. Cheers!
I returned my ef-fx2 had lots of focus issues and only worked well with my nifty fifty

Love the look of your photos in this video. Have you used something like a black pro-mist filter or whats film simulation or presets did you use?
It's all classic chrome with minor tweaks
awesome video
nice t-shirt Op-1 and cuckoo! aghhh I miss my op1
Looks like you are back at 24mm onwards from 7:07
That 24mm F2 is nicely sharp!! Love what you are producing with it. #NoEnglaish
Haha. :) thanks!
I was just there! Love that place...
Try shooting square format.
Thank you, good info. Love this place where is it located? What is it called?
I had a brilliant idea of perhaps using my EF glass on a Fuji camera that I like, with a speed booster, and the 7 year old in me that was bouncing off the walls at the thought of DOF of a FF and even more light than on FF did not take into account that the image projected onto the sensor will be of lesser quality than that on FF. I mean, the booster has something like 5 glass elements, right, none of which are absolutely perfect, the alignment isn't absolutely perfect, and the imperfections quickly add up and multiply? It's like, it's great, as a novelty, a special shoot, but definitely not as your usual camera setup...
haven't watched the video, just want to say the Lens Turbo II is performing great on my XP1 nad I would recommend it (even htough I haven't tried any other booster)
curious to know how laowa's new focal reducer stacks up compared to these
Great vídeo! Where is your gopro placed?
It's actually an Insta360 One X on a pole sticking out of my bag :)
@@AndrewGoodCamera Cool! Thank you!

Damn I gotta pull that "no Inglés"
Why hasn't anyone done a review on the Metabones Speedbooster for Fuji yet?
I have many nice manual focus F mount lenses. Don't really need to speedbooster feature, what do you recommend for this?
I am bit late to this video, but i'm wondering if you have tested the speedboosters on the x-pro3?
Because i'm looking into getting one for my nikkor lenses but I have heard of the speedboosters can damage the plastic around the lens-release button.
I haven't found any info about this anywhere.
Great video btw!
I want to use both my new and old nikon lenses with the upcoming pro3 I don't know which speedbooster to get. It seems like there's still no good enough option.
Metabones
Metabones is the only brand I would consider. It actually makes a FF lens sharper in the center wide open on my APS-C camera than if the lens was mounted without the speed booster.
Is there a Viltrox Speed Booster that works with full frame Nikon lenses on Fuji X cameras?
Who wants to use any of these when peeps on the outside are out of focus compared to the person in the middle? :( what..? thanks for this video though and great shots in that old scrap yard in Vegas...love the music also...
Thanks. And I agree. I think there's maybe a case in portraiture , maybe? But otherwise, not for me.
@@AndrewGoodCamera Yes ,perhaps a one person shot, but seeing what it does to the Bokeh and how it distort the creaminess, Im not a fan, plus they want over $400...this product should be under $50.00
