Planetside 2 is some of the most fun I've had in gaming. I've moved onto other things, but there was nothing like being in a multi-platoon fight and making plays that seemed like it had an impact on the full battle.

Same im addicted to apex legends now, have 1.1k hours in that and ps2 does feel old, although its still fun. but for example 5 classes, vs like 20 legends on apex. just 1 example, plus i love sliding down hills. The meta on apex is just way more advanced with lots of combos, while ps2 is a bit stale with like heavy and medic combo etc. Both have there pros and cons, but yes ps2 is where i learned fps games and have 5k hours there. Use to be a terrible noob with 0.1 kdr and grew my way up to a vet in that game.

@@MistyAndBonnie actually every class in PS2 has multiple aplications. but the massivness and the ammount of possibilities on how one can participate on battle (not skirmish, but battle) effort in 1st person shooter is unparalelled.
Although it's sandbox battle game, not battle royal. I think that it's one of main reasons why PS3 failed - it stepped in the field of battle royal were there are some pretty good and strong tittles while majority of PS2 players play it for battle, but not royal.
For example for me there are two reasons why I left the game - glitches and constructions messed up by last update. I loved constructions but obviously Wrel didn't know what to do with that so it's usefullness declined and finaly it become beautifull by graphics but mostly useless in battlefield with only few places left for build and by becoming large and fragile and almost defensless against planes.
Yeah, there was a moment before when I builded myself a little base and band of 6 newbies tried to disolve it and they didn't succeed. But I had to tryhard and they had fun as well. I showed them later some tips on how to make their effort mort effective next time. Those times are over. Now it's all about running there and back with some stoopid modules.
But back to PS3 - it was clear as sky that the game has little chance to succeed and it was painfull to see such waste of money we've put into game while the money could be spend on revamp of PS2 like to rewrite the engine instead of making pitches to solve the glitches and creating new in the process. It's why PS3 was hated from the begining of it.

Planetside arena made me give up on them not just as a company, but sadly on planetside as an ip. There was a lot I didn't care for with monetization, that we tolerated, like the pink camo, and overpriced boosts, or bundles, or when implants came out and people had to spend sometimes thousands to get the ones they wanted, forking out money for construction assets that never get used, then to have them turn around and announce they were coming out with a BR instead of planetside 3? Oh man, i'll be honest, I was so angry I wanted it to flop, and was glad when it did.

    1) player driven base building needs to be prioritized from the start. It should be assumed that all, or at least most, objectives require player made based to hold or exploit them.
    2) Make.logistics a part of the game again, like PlanetSide 1. Let players do bombing runs behind the enemy front lines to take out supply lines and cut off spawns at the front, or air drop a commando squad to disrupt enemy logistics.
    3) Way more faction vehicle/equipment divergence. It's lame when all factions just use color swapped versions of the same vehicles as each other.
All vanu vehicles should have hover capability and sustained beam or pulsed be weapons. All Terran vehicles should have Gatling guns as their SMALLEST weapons and everything else should follow that model. Etc. Super vehicles like bastions need more faction identity as well.
    4) bring back the mechs. This game is set in a sci Fi future, and the first he had them, and mechs are never not cool.

But of course I'm broke and developing such a game from scratch is quite on the expensive side.

I would love basically a copy/paste on a modern engine, fresh code, all that stuff. From there you can add to it and make it amazing with new guns, vehicles, maps, base design, movement mechanics, and I could go on and on. In other words, done right, PS4 could be another 10 year game. I rarely play games more than like 2 or 3 years old, just so many titles to play. But PS2 did something to me like no other game could. No other game is like it.

    • @critche95
      @critche95 2 месяца назад +2

@@houstoner I'm sure that if you copy/paste the axact design wouldn't work.
It requires a fresh new approach while keeping the original gaeplay pillars to attrack new players, keep the old player and fix the issues PS2 is facing.
Some features such as the MAX unit or even the spawn system needs a complete overall, the level design must be remade from scratch to include the new vehicles types (boat for example), new spawn habits and balancing the combined arms gameplay.
This is such a complex subject, and I'd die for a complete design overall 😅

I think Daybreak/RPG have made a lot of mistakes over the years, but Arena has to be one of their biggest.
They bet the farm on a game they knew their only committed audience would hate. They _knew we didn't want it and they decided to do it anyway._ They hoped that they would pull in a _new_ audience that would justify said bet, and then Respawn completely stole their thunder while the game was still in playtesting. What little hope they had that their bet would pay off died with Apex's release. "What if same game but better and also free and made by devs with a better track record" was a death knell before the game even fully launched.
That's the inherent problem with trend-chasing: If you're following the crowd then you have to _really_ knock it out of the park, or you're just going to fizzle out before you achieve anything. World of Warcraft is a great example, we got dozens upon dozens of new MMORPGs trying to be the next WoW. How many of them are still around? How many managed to become the next WoW? Basically the only contender is FFXIV, which 1) launched a long while after WoW, 2) shat the bed completely upon launch and had to be rebooted, and 3) gets a major boost from being part of the _Final Fantasy_ series, having name brand recognition working in its favour before it ever launched. And even then, much of the ground WoW lost to FFXIV was due to Actiblizz's incompetence rather than Squeenix's artifice. Actiblizz pissed off their audience and FFXIV was there to say "Hey, want to play a fantasy MMORPG made by people that don't hate you?"
The whole Arena debacle is probably the worst outcome we could've had. Daybreak decided to flip the bird and use the money that could've gone towards a _real_ PS3 to take an enormous risk that backfired spectacularly, and gave the fanbase another thing to be mad at them for. They responded to this by taking PS2 out of maintenance and starting full-time development again. The result of this was the Escalation update, which did manage to bring PS2's slowly-draining numbers back up... but it was, like most big PS2 updates, a flash in the pan.
The Rogue Planet era of PS2 became defined by big, flashy updates that caused a momentary spike in population followed by a steady drop-off to previous numbers, and the actual content of those updates was often undercooked. Escalation brought in the horrendously overpowered Bastion and Outfit Armoury Orbital Strikes, and I can't think of a single positive from the update besides the player numbers bump.
Sanctuary was a giant waste of time, only really serving to slow down people trying to get to a fight and confusing the hell out of new players who don't know why they're stuck on a space station where they can't fire their guns and the ways _off_ the space station aren't clearly signposted. Even now I can't really see any aspect of it that couldn't have just been a menu. It completely misses the point of the Sanctuaries from PS1.
Oshur was unfinished, probably never _will_ be finished, and turned out to be something most of the playerbase didn't like, but the bean counters said it had to go out in January so out it went in January. It lingered around like a bad smell for a year or so until Toadman finally said "Yeah this doesn't work" and all-but removed it from the game. How many _weeks_ of work did RPG put into Oshur for it to end up like that?
Arsenal broke the game balance in half over its knee, what was _meant_ to rebalance the guns to make things better did exactly the opposite, and introduced the Masthead into things, fucking over the pilots too. The subsequent Outfit Wars season had a _glut_ of NC vs. NC fights because _not playing as NC was seen as a disadvantage_ and RPG apparently did not consider this a canary in a coal mine that their "balance patch" had resulted in the exact opposite of the intended effect. Meanwhile, already-bad VS weapons like the Darkstar and mid-tier ones like the Skorpios were nerfed to oblivion, not because they needed it, but because the _Betelgeuse_ got nerfed. The absolute madness of NC's directive SMG being the Tempest, now a _better version of the Cyclone_ while the VS get something that will normally overheat before killing a single person. Meanwhile the Butcher gets turbobuffed because never needing to reload is only okay if TR do it.
Planetside Arena was _not_ Planetside 3, but I wish it had been.
As a personal aside, even if Arena had worked, I probably wouldn't have gone for it. I never liked BR, and when it comes to the other modes, I feel much more at home playing those in other games. I don't need a new title to play them in.

I said it before way back when this game was being developed and I'll say it again. Planetside Arena was not a good idea, if it was anything it was a spin-off game that totally flopped, I could tell it just wasn't gonna work for the Planetside franchise considering there were tons of battle royale and arena combat games at the time, trying to take Planetside's open world combat and make an arena combat game was a very poor decision when they could have actually been using that time and resources on developing a legit "Planetside 3" using the formula of its predecessors or better yet focusing on improving and updating Planetside 2. We're really in a uncomfortable situation following this disaster with Planetside Arena and we can only hope the new ownership in the next couple years starts to bring back more players with good content updates and better addressing bugs and cheating.

I remember the biggest nail in the coffin was Arena did have a bit of a market being a 3 man sci-fi BR which wasnt really a thing elsewhere. Then right as playtest were getting more popular Respawn out of nowhere announced and released in the same day Apex Legends. Free to play 3 man sci-fi BR. No one was gonna look at Arena anymore and I remember how stubborn they were about making it f2p, they really wanted that 30-40 dollar price tag despite a much bigger f2p competitor just showing up. I was right with you back then wanting the BR mode to just be a part of ps2 to bring players in rather than having planetside trying to compete with itself.

there is a possibility of a PlanetSide 3 game. In 2020, Daybreak Game Company announced that a new PlanetSide game was in development, but no official title or release date has been confirmed yet.
In a 2020 interview, Daybreak's Executive Producer, Andy Sites, mentioned that the new game would be a "spiritual successor" to PlanetSide 2, with a focus on large-scale warfare, base-building, and player-driven economies.
Since then, there have been occasional updates and teasers from Daybreak, but no concrete details on the game's features, gameplay, or release window.
Given the success of PlanetSide 2 and the dedicated community, it's likely that Daybreak will continue to develop and release new content, potentially leading to a full-fledged PlanetSide 3 game in the future.
Keep an eye on official announcements and updates from Daybreak Game Company for more information on the next installment in the PlanetSide series.

I did not like the direction that Planetside 2 took. I loved Planetside the original, the only thing about it I wanted changed were the graphics to be updated and the hacks to be fixed. What we got for 2 was instead "Battlefield: Planetside", meh. I enjoyed how much slower pace Planetside was originally even though you could still die stupidly fast.
Edit: CTF in Planetside? That's what the LLU was for. Why on earth would...nvm it makes sense because, in my opinion, Planetside 2 was Planetside in skin only. So it makes sense that the developer would continue the path of turning the franchise into every other shooter out there.

It was an absolute disgrace how the community reacted to arena, they never gave the game a chance. Arena was doomed from the beginning after the massive backlash and hate campaign from their own community. It wasn't even supposed to stay an "only battle royale", it would've gotten tdm, capture the flag, conquest type modes and more if it stayed alive for longer.
I disagree with your statement that dbg didn't pitch arena in the right way. The community was already worried about loosing players, so a big marketing campaign INSIDE the existing playerbase would've gotten even more hate from the community. I still remember discord, reddit threads, outfit and all chat.
They had a small budget to make a few changes to planetside and created arena, the only way to possibly get enough budget for a planetside 3. And their own community destroyed that possibility by spreading hate, dislikes and false information (like how many people said we don't need another br while it wasn't supposed to be br only).

People played PlanetSide because they wanted a MMOFPS. There were already other battle royale games out there.
Making a battle royale game in the PlanetSide universe was a mistake. Most PlanetSide players were not going to want it, like it, or most importantly play it.
You could blame the community all you want, but the community was just being honest. I know I had absolutely no interest in it. In fact, I didn't even know it ever actually got made. That's how little interest I had in it.
You can't force a community who doesn't want something, to give that something a chance. People have limited free time in their lives and they should spend it doing the things they enjoy. The devs made a bad bet and predictably lost. That's not on the players. Arena could have been an amazing game of its own, but it was never going to succeed.

Big fan of your work Cyrious but I think the choice to call Planetside Arena "Planetside 3" really doesn't make sense. Sure, it took up resources, and sure, it could be called the third entry in the Planetside franchise in some respect, but given that it didn't follow the format of the rest of the games (not an MMOFPS but more of a battle royale arena shooter) and wasn't called Planetside 3 at any point, it really shouldn't be seen as such. Would be almost like calling "Elder Scrolls: Blades" Elder Scrolls 6.

So what i hope in the future is we get a game like ps2 that combines logistical and base building elements even more, like a satisfactory game, where i can grind on my factory and like produce weapons for big fights and sell them and earn money etc. I feel like the original planetside 2 idea still has alot of room to grow and expand. Battle royales are linear and planetside 2 idea can be as creative as you want it to be. For me, PS4 would be simple. Same basic gameplay as PS2 for starters, MMOFPS. Set it 100 years after PS2 so the weaponary and vehicles have advanced a bit. Make new Auraxis maps, keep them about the same size they are now, but plan to add more maps in the rotation over time, maybe eventually having like a dozen maps in the rotation. Keep the class system for infantry, maybe even adding a new class or two. Keep the same basic vehicles, but add a couple more and/or make them more robust and durable. Get rid of warpgates, and loosen the lattice system a bit. Heck, keep and give construction the buff it deserves as I feel construction done right could be pivotal on the battlefield and not just a infil clubhouse or slight inconvenience for a pack of MBTs. Basically make PS2 on a new, modern engine. From there, I feel it would bring people who left back, and in turn that will get others who never played interested in the hype. If a PS4 is to happen, the dev team need to really study what made PS2 so great, and stay true to that method. As long as they don't get carried away with microtransactions (its going to happen) and stick to making a good game first and foremost, I think the IP can be given new life for both noobs and veterans to enjoy. PS2 is a one of a kind game. I remember the all nighters back in like 2013 when the servers were popping 24/7. I think that can happen again.

planetside 4 can not exist while whoever is dev is too afraid of angering vets. they must upend the status quo for 4 or 2 to succeed beyond milking a few whales. headshots, redeployside, vehicle ai have had their time, scaring away new or casual players
but ps prolly wont change so now battlebit fills that hole for me

I think it will take a miracle to bring about change that leads to a new planetside game everyone can like. For me, I'll play until the end or the pop dips so low it's jus unplayable. I've been thinking about the next mmo I will replace planetside with and it's sad, but I got a great 8 years out of the game and community which is much more than I ever imagined.

My idea for planetside 4. Is for Planetside: Adam.. Eve Online is currently making the same mistake as Planetside "3" Arena of making another battle royale trying to complete against the big bois in the field.
Would it be amazing if Planetside teamed up with Eve Online as I always saw Planetside as Eve on the ground. The battlefield / planets count as major objective points in the factional warfare space. The soldiers are the new upwell consortium clones. And the utilities on the planet are unlocked by in space objectives.

You want a Bastion. Secure a empire cyno so you're faction can warp one planetside

    • @olivermharris_
      @olivermharris_ 2 месяца назад

Just a thought experiment because it's not like forcing MMORPG players into a battle royale. Eve is another MMO. But I wouldn't want to get rid of NC, TR and VC for it. So those factions could be (upwell shareholders? Idk)

if arena was PS3 rather than an offshoot, then clearly the PS2 players didnt want a battle royale. People play PS2 because it ISNT a battle royale. Having 2 different versions of was is essentially the same game is moronic. All you do is split the player base to make BOTH games weaker, split resources to make future content harder to make. How this couldnt be seen by the devs beggars belief. The planeside concept is THE unique part of the game and thats what they should have been focusing on.

They should just take planetside 2 and upgrade.rehual/revamp tf out of it.working on ps2 will be less money than making a hole new game. a new game will take 8 years develop. add the 1st/3rd person switching from ps1. add the classic content from ps1 in it like the other planets and voice macros, and vehicles. Bring back BFRs lol (but make them balanced).bring back the neutral warpgates on some planets. Be able to hijack/hack other factions vehicles. Upgrade the engine so it can run at higher frame rates and modern visual upscaling frame interpolation tech. bring back the better effects from the earlier ps2 version. Upgrade the looks of the bases to look unique, not just steel boxes (the maps and bases are fine). add more types of character movement animations. speed up player movement or atleast foot speed. add a couple modern movements like sliding and such but not too many to break the game. expand on the base building. have players be able to spawn other reinforcement soldiers (dumber ai bot soldiers maybe 5 per user) so you can get a lil boost in action/ population like once a hour (will come handy to defend a base or push through certain doors etc... make it so you can only use it every once in a while). add more quests/missions. have the maps kind of change throughout the month on a cycle to keep it spicy (like when esmir got radioactive, have the beginning of the month regular esamir then it gets radioactive later on in the month and next month its back to regular).add more destructible things like foliage and things in the environment. have different animals or alien animal creatures in the game running around the terrain sometimes to make it more life like. have big marketing pushes to keep game relevant. have an pc server that works on Mac and linux for mouse players. have a "console "server that works on ps4/ps5/xbox/Mac/pc/linux but only supports gamepads and is cross play so the population is higher and nice aim assist mechanic. call it planetside x or something
The Devs keep selling out and every time the vision and road map changes significcantly when its changes owners. This has happened countless other times in other industries too besides gaming. It ruins the main vision of the product and halts upgrades that were in the works. how many time has planetoid exchanged hands? like 4 times by now

i'm soooo sad that i couldn't play PS2 for a loooong time cause my PC couldn't run it properly back then. i could play it, but getting into big Battles nearly fried my PC. Arena was the Only Battle Royal i really had fun playing it. And now i have a really potent PC for PS2 but i don't know if it's worth putting time into it at it's current state. i really have a weird and concerning feeling about it.

What they should have done is just turned every continent lock into a battle royale by disabling respawns and medic revives and then paying increased xp rewards for kills based on how many people were still alive while shrinking the map, with a final reward for being one of the last n people alive. It wouldnt have been that hard and would make continent locks interesting instead of a giant wave of logging off for the night.

If I was to remake 3, I'd make it Hossin. My best memories of 2 was a 4-6 man squad, dumming it late at night on Hossin and running along 3-4 squad of try hards. It was legit a ton of fun and I'd actually love a more com focused, Load out/gear by system so everyone is playing in a fair set up. Then having a 5 0n 5, 10 on 10 ect to 40 on 40, 2-6 base, micro match. It would give the vets something to enjoy, rather then just flexing on newer pops. Make a rank mode and use the maps we already have. Just respawn what is not being used.
That would be an ult mode for people who wants strong team play on both sides, not simply out popping the other.

the third person really took me out of this, i want a fps but if third person is an option u cant use first person your just at a disadvantage. i agree they should of just made a way for this to be in planetside 2 i would of checked it out. they could of did other things aswell, like bring back some like infantry game modes like bring the scrawl back and have a game mode where you have to enter a space station with a squad and there is just a bunch of aliens there to murder you well your trying to extract data or science personnel or something. i still have head cannon that infantry and planet side are the same universe.

It is always bad when a game just follows the meta. The game has to invent the meta not follow it. By the time, they are finished there are better alternatives.
If I want to play fortnite, I just play fortnite. PS2 without the large battles is not planet side, it just another battle royale.
