If Terry was alive and singing like this today he would be right at the top over and above the rubbish we hear most of the time today. What such a nice polite guy.
I am so glad I found this. I love to hear Terry Stafford sing. He had such a beautiful voice. I think he would have made it as a popular singer but the time was just not right. The Beatles were just beginning and I think that is what help to stall his career. I think if he could have started earlier things would have been different for him. Such a shame for such a talented man.
unfortunately an awful lot of great singers in the 60's got pushed out when the Beatles took over. I love the Beatles, but I miss all the 60's singers and bands before the Beatles
I love classic music. I have to say, Mr. Stafford's voice is pure and smooth. Truly an amazing voice and underrated talent. I can listen to this song everyday. Beautiful songs from a time of true American ways.
Now it clicks with me why when I heard this in Cowboy Bebop on Netflix I thought I heard Elvis, but this song was never covered by him. Suspicion however was covered by Elvis
@@lifeworksndhenterprisesllc6597 Sorry, that was another Stafford... Can't think of it right now but definitely not Terry. I'll post back. Maybe Jim Stafford...?
This song is excellent, and for me his best one. The voice he has, and the way he sings the lyrics is very good. I had not heard it in maybe fifty years.

Great voice, sounds like Elvis - I heard Col Parker paid Terry thousands of dollars not to pursue A singing career ( too much competition for Elvis) & Terry accepted which is WHY he never became a super star like Elvis!!! Terry a tall drink of water, aye kuramba!!!❤️❤️❤️❤️
didn't he co-write Amarillo in morning and latter released by George Strait? That song is listed a being the 12th most famous country song of all time and that is where he grew up.
msjosephine2 Yes he is the writer, although a co-wroter with his music side who did much of the instrumentation on his songs. His unknown partner had exceeding instrumentation talent. You'll notice how diverse the instrumentation is between songs. He does not appear to have married. His singing career in that he hit the top 5-or10 with the first two recordings which is quite a feat.
I heard a story about 40 years ago, that Terry was paid a visit by Col Tom Parker, Elvis Presley's manager just after Terry released his huge hit song "Suspicion." Terry's version was outstanding compared to Elvis's version. Col Parker allegedly offered Terry a huge amount of money not to record any more Pop songs which was why he change genre to Country. Don't know how true that was, but Terry Stafford was young, good looking, and he could really sing in the 1960s and was a definite threat to Elvis.
Did someone find out any personal information on Terry Stafford - He never received the success that was due him - a great singer - appeared in the movie in 1969 of Wild Wheels with Casey .
He was born in Hollis Ok. He grew up in Amarillo Tx. He graduated from Palo Duro High School in Amarillo. He eventually went on to write Amarillo by Morning.
Terry left us way too soon. He would have gone on to super stardom if he had lived. This performance on the Dick Clark show was definitely lip synced as most of Dick Clark's guests did. That way he only had to pay Terry and not the whole band. Everybody who heard Suspicion for the first time thought it was Elvis. When Elvis released his version of Suspicion, it wasn't as good as Terry's.
I do not know that Terry Stafford was born November 22nd 1941 and passed away in 1996. I can't believe he was 6 ft 3 weigh 200 lb and also sound like Elvis Presley. Both of them are down-to-earth people. I hope God is hearing Terry and Elvis and saying you two are really good singers.
Ok Shyman. Consider your life complete. This clip wasn't going to go up until the first week in December, but here's an early Christmas present for you. It is now posted. I really can't do requests, per se. But heck, it's the holidays. Enjoy!!
Debateable that Terry had the vocal range that Elvis did. Yeah he had a voice, but in my opinion he could've never competed with the King's diversity and unique star quality :)
glen pittman Terry has such excellent instrumentation in the music, that his first two recordings hit the top. Info on wikipedia is very slim. His instrumentation man was Bob Summers, brother-in-law of Les Paul. Thus Bob Summers recording Studio was tops in the industry & Summers the unsung hero of Terry's success using multi-track recording that Les Paul pioneered. He doesn't appear to have married but kept writting and recording his full life. He passed away of liver failure possibly due to drinking.
I've loved this tune, as well as Terry's other tunes, for a long time. I couldn't help it but repeated the start of the record when the tune ends multiple times. I loved it so much. I remember that my friend purchased it in '64. I was with him when he purchased the record. I purchased a Kitty Well's tune "This White Circle" when we purchased the 45's. However, a couple of months later after hearing the record he purchased, I instantly loved it so much that I had to purchase one & haven't regretted it since. By the way, what instrument is played at the end of the verses "But it won't shine" & "As bright as your eyes." The instrument was played at other parts of the record. It sounded like an oboe was played? Anyone knows? Thanks.
He had that Presley voice. Maybe some difference but I really like it. I just have recently rediscovered him. I like he is from Amarillo. Suspicion is one of those I could listen to time and again. I think it was during a time that they only needed one Elvis and another thing was he needed to be a lot more “showy” in order to compete.
He may have had the Elvis voice but like most singers of that era he couldn't move and had no idea what to do while singing. That is why Elvis is still King
If Terry was alive and singing like this today he would be right at the top over and above the rubbish we hear most of the time today.

Fantastic voice rip Terry always remembered. Don
The older I get the more I appreciate music from this time and the more I hate modern music, I really missed my time..
Me too and I regret it
This guy has a haunting quality to his voice and I love it
In my opinion his voice was better than Elvis but Elvis was more flashy so he got more attention. Unfairly I think.
Yes he does, great voice for sure..
Its the echo that makes it sound haunting, he's singing like Elvis.
Rebecca B. Elvis had the full package. I do however like Suspicion by Terry a bit better than Elvis's.
Just like Elvis Presley.
RIP Terry Stafford (November 22, 1941 - March 17, 1996), aged 54

This man was extremely underrated
His voice has a real heartfelt compelling quality to it and he enhances the melody beautifully
