    Guess what. Your neighbors pregnancy and decisions about her pregnancy are NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS. THIS IS NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS. STOP TELLING WOMEN WHAT THEY CAN DO WITH THEIR BODIES. NO one is worried about the man who got her pregnant. No recourse, no serious discussion of HIS responsibilities or obligations. All on the woman. Seriously screwed up thinking. @@yep2202 That actually makes NO sense at all. Are you saying a non viable fetus that will be stillborn should be delivered no matter what the mother's wishes are? Because that's what's happening in Texas. The woman could die from the delivery and her uterus could be damaged from the delivery. How is ANY of that pro life? Especially if she dies as a result of the delivery.

    When I was a practicing RN, I worked on a gynecology unit. Ectopic pregnancy was a medical emergency. The only way to stabilize is to remove the tube and embryo. Women were admitted and sent directly to the OR. These judges have got to be held accountable for allowing their outdated perspectives on women and gender to dictate how they interpret the law.

      As an operating room staff I agree with you ma’am 100%. I am in GYN service and I’m doing GYN cases every single working days. We are lucky here in Seattle because women has the right to choose of their own body. We save lots of women’s lives here from ectopic pregnancies to fetal demise. We also save babies while they are still in the uterus with our expert Fetoscopic surgeons as well as the mother’s lives. The Texas law is so horrible that a pregnant woman, her family, and her doctor can’t do what is appropriate procedure to do to save the life of the mother. I feel the pain of the mother who lost her pregnancy/baby and at the same time fighting for her life every time we have the procedure saving the mother’s life because the baby in the uterus is already dead. The Texas law is so harsh to women that they don’t care if a pregnant woman dies with the dead fetus/baby in their uterus.
      Washington State women are very lucky that they have the right to save their lives from deadly ectopic and fetal demise pregnancies. Thank God🙏😇

      I am pro-choice but I totally get Alyssa on this one! There should be a universal agreement on when does that fetus has rights if it does at all? The answer could be it does not have rights until it is born and it is outside my body! Fine, but then we are talking about people being able to abort at 9 months! Also if I were to stab a pregnant woman and kill her fetus, that should never be treated as murder, and no, the fact that ''she wanted to keep it'' does not change the biology of it. Is this a human being with rights or is it just a bunch of cells? There needs to be more consistency here, otherwise we look like massive hypocrites!

    Agh. I cannot stand Alyssa on this issue. The overturning of Roe has shown us how exceptions don't work. Trusting women to decide when an abortion is the right choice worked just fine for 30+ years.
    And she's being intentionally obtuse when Whoopi says "it's not your business." It doesn't matter if technology lowers the point at which a fetus is viable. If I don't believe a fetus is a human being, at 12 weeks for example, I should have the right to decide if I want an abortion. It doesn't matter what technological advances can do.

    • @LibraryLady929
      @LibraryLady929 10 месяцев назад +1

      In fairness, I don’t think a 15 week fetus will ever be viable. The lungs and brain aren’t fully developed. The skin is basically tissue paper. They are only about 4-6.5 inches long. How would you safely get a fetus from the human womb to an artificial womb? There are no tubes that will fit, nor ventilators that would work nor even the ability to find veins. This is where an understanding of fetal development and preemie parents sharing real pictures of what extremely premature infants look like is so important. Anti-abortion literature lies about what they look like.
      My older son was born at 29 weeks/1 day. His foot was as long as my pinky. He was covered in languno because he wasn’t far enough along to have enough body fat to regulate his own temperature. And he weighed 2 pounds 4.7 ounces and was 14 inches long. Even getting tubes in him was a struggle and he was definitely viable. There was a baby born the same day as he was who was 25 weeks. That baby was barely a pound. People just have no idea unless they’ve seen it first hand.

      And VIABILITY means that it can be kept alive due to medical intervention? It used to mean, viable without medical intervention. Babies born too soon suffer long-term problems, blindness, deafness, and severe learning disabilities, and who is going to provide care for this viable life? More in line with GOP thinking, who's going to pay for the care of this viable life? Because, if you "save" a life simply because medical technology is capable of doing it who's going to pay for the round-the-clock care a life like this is going to require? Who's going to care for the life that was viable because technology makes it so? If technology is all that matters, what about prolonging life? Brain-dead people can be kept alive by technology. They aren't viable once the machine is turned off. None of this makes sense! The GOP has always wanted to push its religious standards on everyone else. I'm a Christian but not a Republican. Why? Because the GOP speaks out of both sides of its head, it's pro-life unless a court decides that the death penalty is appropriate. They'll give cancer treatments to an inmate with a death sentence just so THEY have the power to decide when & how that inmate is going to die. IT MAKES NO SENSE! They're anti-divorce except when it comes to who they nominate and elect for President. They voted for and still support a rapist for President. The criminal statute expired, but the judge in E. Jean Carroll's case called Trump a rapist. His money kept him from facing criminal charges back then. He's trying desperately to use what money he has left to stay out of jail again. The GOP doesn't practice what it preaches!

      @@robinaddis-vaughn7271 YES!!!!! 👏 👏 I completely agree! It drives me nuts when I hear conservatives touting the latest micropreemie who survived and they completely ignore the breathing tube still very much present in the photos at one year or the update that includes all the therapies or diagnosis of cerebral palsy or whatever. Who is paying for that? What about quality of life of the child? If you’re going to push for extreme viability and efforts to save the baby then you need to be willing to support the parents through support of services, being ok with higher insurance costs- or better yet universal healthcare! 😉- etc. Because that’s pro-life. That’s acknowledging the cost of the decision and being willing to follow through. I’m a Christian too and I just can’t stand the conservative messaging on this!
      My older son was born at 29 weeks. I will NEVER forget the frank conversation we had with the neonatologist prior to his birth. If you want to be scared s--less about your child’s future health and success, sit through one of those. We were told his percentage of survival for his gestational age, that he may have learning disabilities, lifelong breathing issues, vision problems, that he could develop brain bleeds or NEC- an awful gastrointestinal condition preemies can get- and all manner of horrors. It was terrifying. But she wanted us to know. Even though his gestational age meant he was able to be saved, she felt it was necessary to give us the full picture. Thankfully he’s had a fabulous outcome and is now in the gifted program at school but I am fully aware that “there but for the grace of God” fully applies to us.
      I cannot imagine the conversation the woman whose baby was born at 25 weeks two hours after my son had with the neonatologist. With preemies every week before 32 weeks counts in leaps and bounds. And the outcomes at 25 weeks are far more grim than 29 weeks. That doesn’t mean both babies can’t survive without issue, but it means you’re starting from different places. People just don’t understand how fraught the NICU is and how a fetus develops. They don’t come out at even 29 weeks with fully developed lungs looking like a full term newborn. In the case of my son, they look like red aliens or red wrinkly old men with barely any fat and skin so thin it bruises easily from the constant poking. I wish the reality was shared more so people understood. The success stories pre-24 weeks are newsworthy because they’re so rare, not because they’re the norm.

That includes babies and near babies born within the US. The "viable fetus" Alyssa is referring to is a human life that is NO LONGER dependent on the mother because it can survive outside of the womb. What Alyssa is saying is that there should be a conversation about the rights of that particular fetus that is now an independent human life. I would agree and I think she does too, that there should be NO govt involvement regarding the life of a zygote or embryo that is totally dependent on the mother. They shouldn't be having sex outside of marriage anyway (eyeroll).

    I am a doctor and I am very uncomfortable with the idea of “medical exceptions” - as shown by the case of a mother with a foetus having trisomy 18, lower court said she met the threshold of her life and well-being being at risk but it was repealed by a higher court. Law acts in years and months. Pregnancies act in days and weeks, and especially for dying foetuses and life threatening pregnancies, that is a matter of hours/sometimes minutes. Medical exceptions do NOT work - especially with the threat of 99 years in prison. Doctors are not fortune tellers and superhuman - we try to make the best clinical decision for the patient’s best interest and safety but this will not happen if a doctor has the threat of 99 years in prison. Saying excemption begets the question of how much of a degree does a mother’s life have to be in danger? Those questions should be for doctors and patients not for law and fickle politicians who are the pockets of corporations as opposed to the people.

    I have a role at my company that is unique. I recently had a male manager and a male boss make a decision regarding the process of how to do my job without consulting me. When I went up to them and told them that process wouldn’t work (because I was the person who had the experience to determine that), they ended up realizing that I was going to be the one most affected by their decision, so they changed it to fit what I wanted. I am glad that they did, but I can’t help but be baffled that these two men thought they were qualified to make a decision about something that would only impact MY life without even asking me for my input or feedback. It’s literally insane how people in power think. They make decisions just because they can. They are hardly ever informed decisions and you’ll be lucky to be a woman who is granted a seat at the table making decisions about your own life.

    When viability is mentioned, no one mentions the elephant in the room- healthcare costs.
    Do you know how expensive it is for a healthy, 40 week to term baby to be born in a hospital?
    Now, imagine that baby is born at 24 weeks. That child will have to stay in a hospital's neo natal unit for weeks. Who's paying for all that? The patient? The insurance company? The hospital? Every future patient of that hospital, and that insurance company?
    And what happens after the baby leaves the hospital? That baby will not be 100% healthy. How many Americans are receiving disability benefits because they weren't born healthy, at full term?
    It sounds cold, heartless. But, it's an important issue in this debate that is never mentioned.

    • @LibraryLady929
      @LibraryLady929 10 месяцев назад +1

      Yup. My older son was born at 29 weeks. My husband said that he saw his medical bill at one point and it was a million dollars pre insurance payment. And that’s a baby that had relatively few complications and left the NICU 3 weeks before his due date. Imagine the cost for a brain bleed or NEC or continued respiratory care. Some babies can spend almost a year or more in the NICU. Who is paying for that? I’m not saying we shouldn’t save babies that can be saved, I’m saying there’s a cost and it doesn’t end when the baby goes home. Even my son needed occupational and physical therapy for the first three years. Some babies go home on oxygen or feeding tubes or need therapy for years after. And often those are the ones born before 27/28 weeks.
