Can't believe I missed this before now. Karine is a force and a treasure, a warm heart and a fearless poet. Beautiful stuff which takes us beyond the fluff. Saw them in concert some years ago - go if you ever have the chance, you will leave as a better person. Oh and the music's amazing too!
Holy shit. Reduces to tears within two minutes. And then dragged up by the scruff of the neck and slapped in the face by track two. Such plaintive, incisive, searing, aching, brutal, honest, beautiful songs.
I Burn But I Am Not Consumed was unexpectedly heart wrenching. It's one thing to bear these feelings for my own country, but it's something else entirely to hear someone from distant shores echo them so beautifully to me. This was wonderful and, strangely, comforting.
The discovery of the day - or rather the night. I love the sister and the brother and the miraculous woman in the background who contributes so much with her sensitivity! Heart- touching akkordeon!
Karine is a pillar of the wonderful Folk by the Oak 'Spell Songs' project branching out from Rob Macfarlane's words and Jackie Morris's images. So good to see and hear her here, in her own right, so to speak. Definitely the most hearty fun I've had that had even a trace of #45 in it. Thanks NPR/Suraya, Karine, Steven, Inge...and great Mystery :-).
Extraordinary choice to include "I Burn..." in the live set. Not the most obvious choice musically, but I love that she chose to do this one behind the Tiny Desk!!!
Her poetry is astounding: word play and truth and vision. Thank you for sharing this. Watching Notre Dame in flames then hearing the song of the wren brought me to tears again. Brilliant, all 3 songs and the players!
Karine Polwart doesn't just sing and play songs, she takes us on an emotional - and I would argue, spiritual journey. This is totally involving and heart-rending. In a similar fashion, Magda Giannikou (Banda Magda) does much the same thing, albeit with a very different style of music. In this respect especially, these two artists are HIGHLY unusual. Here Inge Thomson plays straight-tuned accordion, with Magda Giannikou it is she herself who also plays the straight-tuned accordion. Karine's songs are (in and of themselves) excellent, and somehow the extra dimensions of story telling (also done by Magda) and the exquisite blend of acoustic instruments - especially the accordion - combine to take her songs to the level of high art, to a place of tears, compassion, and love - a glimpse into God's own heart. If you don't believe in God, just listen to Karine performing - she won't need to evangelise, this will reach your soul. Some piano pieces of Chopin do this, but not much else - not on this level. Karine, Inge and Steven have an important mission here on Earth, and I believe it's a divine mission. Thank you so much, Karine, Inge and Steven.
Karine’s voice is so beautiful it hurts a little. Makes me tear up every time. Thank you Karine, Inge and Stephen. I Burn But I am Not Consumed is now more relevant than ever
Without Tiny Desk I would probably never hear the fabulous music of the world. I love life and I love the first song. Peaceful 😁 Oh Scottish wonderful.
I’m a songwriter and I put my absolute heart and soul into my songs, and I think I’m pretty good and so does my audience. And then I watch this and think ‘why do I even bother?’ Stunning.
I love Karine and the band.Saw them for the first time on their UK tour back in October last year and they were amazing.I'm just disappointed and saddened that such talented performers and songwriters don't get much wider recognition.I suppose that's folk for you.
Exactly! When did everyone decide they only wanted songs with boring lyrics? Popular artists only seem to sing about their love for some dude(ette) called Yu.
Oh Precious Goddesses and God's thank you for creating those lovely healing vibrational sounds for us all!!!! Thank you so much original Heart Of All Hearts Bless Us All Now And Always!!!!
This is absolutely lovely! The controlled yet engaging guitar playing by Steven, the playing and ethereal singing of Inge and in the foreground, Karine's bridge between all three. One of my favorite's TDC
@Christian Larsen hi Christian. I don't know to be honest. He's getting a lovely tone out of it for sure. Could it be a Lowden? Have I even spelled that correctly 😄?
@Christian Larsen im 99.9% positive its a Collins, OM1-JL. It has the right shape, wood(color) you can check it out here www.collingsguitars.com/acoustic-guitars/om1-jl/
Grew up in the same village as Stevie (he just lived a wee bit higher up than the rest of us)and even at a young age Stevie was one of the good guys. Came from a lovely family and never had a bad word to say about anybody and nobody had a bad word to say about him, and even if somebody didn't like him, they would never have caught him....geezo... he could run fast! As you said, he is a gentleman and it's great to see them doing so well.
For those that like this, I recommend several of Karine's other songs, 'We're all Leaving', 'Daisy', 'I'm gonna do it all' and 'the sun's coming over the hill'. Lovely stuff.
...and "Follow the Heron." Got to see these three in a tiny venue in Forres, Scotland last year. Brilliant. Absolutely brilliant. Wonderful to find them here!
"He would pit himself against time and tide and in his wake, the shifting sands of Balmedie in Aberdeenshire would never be the same." So painful to hear as an Aberdonian but believe me when I say, Trump has never and will never be welcome here.
How does this manage to be so poetic, somehow transmit melancholy by reference to traditional Scottish themes and, in a way, things lost, and at the same time, sound so modern and hopeful? The last song, "The King of Birds", surprised me. I love Gaelic music, and, since young, was very interested in the traditions and folklore of both, Ireland and Scotland, aside from the beautiful music. But the song about Saint Stephan's day and the "Hunting of the wren" has always hurt, as it has roots in a cruel, horrid tradition which saddens me. Lankun's song on the subject echoes the sadness I feel about such senseless killing. But this song, stressing the smarts of the "king of all birds" (also a part of the tradition) is all about joy and hope, and a different reading of a custom that I have always, deeply, despised. I am still trying to process this new reading, as the song is so pretty and I feel a strong cognitive dissonance :)
That means you are late to the party since they don't have random one hit wonders. You also must have bad taste or no taste since you rely on others to be the judge for you. Philistine dullard.

My favourite singer in the whole world. Makes me cry every time.
Same here, as soon as she sings my while body comes alive with emotion

aye. Me too. :)

i LOVE how two peeps are singing/playing guitar and then there's the one member being an entire band in the back.
that's inge thomson and she's fantastic
Absolutely! Inge is amazing isn't she?
Inge, you legend xx
mercy god! thats fifteen minutes full of more feelings than i can possibly process. colour me overwhelmed, and filled with gratitude.

Karine Polwart trio is completely brilliant! Thanks for your inspirational music and musicianship
Always a total pleasure to listen Karine and her palls.I have seen them play live a few times, money well spent.
How could this gem pass me by until now? Goosebumps!
I am in awe at the power of those lyrics! May he receive as much as he has given, so we can all begin to finally heal.
Her poetry is astounding: word play and truth and vision. Thank you for sharing this. Watching Notre Dame in flames then hearing the song of the wren brought me to tears again. Brilliant, all 3 songs and the players!
Listen to Karine almost daily. ❤❤❤❤
I absolutely loved this. Their second song was the best in my opinion - musically and lyrically. The message was potent.

Ophelia just has the absolute feels... it takes me straight back to hearing it for the first time
Karine’s voice is so beautiful it hurts a little. Makes me tear up every time. Thank you Karine, Inge and Stephen.
I Burn But I am Not Consumed is now more relevant than ever
I never heard of her until I by chance listened to Pocket of wind resistance and instantly fell in love with the album.
Even among these wonderful concerts, this is an outstanding performance. I am shaking as I write this.
Without Tiny Desk I would probably never hear the fabulous music of the world. I love life and I love the first song. Peaceful 😁 Oh Scottish wonderful.
Mate, you should Google BBC 6Music immediately. The greatest radio station on the planet
And thanks to NPR Music again for showing me some unknown names. That I am for sure gonna love
Hardly unknown! Been big in the Scottish/UK folk circles for a good few years - never mind the time as lead for "mailinky".
I can't believe there's a fellow Shetlander on TDC!!! Wonderful, amazing, poignant and utterly stunning.
You guys are the best
1.5% of the population of Fair Isle have now been on Tiny Desk Concerts!
Simply magickal, greetings from Fraserburgh, Aberdenshire!

Superb. 'I Burn but am not consumed' was particularly great! thank you!!
I’m a songwriter and I put my absolute heart and soul into my songs, and I think I’m pretty good and so does my audience. And then I watch this and think ‘why do I even bother?’
Stunning.
Because you have your own unique story to tell. But yes, I agree, stunning!

While this kind of music isn’t my favorite, her voice is undeniable.
Great to see you in that almost legendary studio. Well deserved! Greetings from MK, UK
