  • There was pretty much no bushings left in either cable end. Cheap fix.
    Napa = 620-1410 $r21
    Advance Auto = Doorman 14044 $27
    When I get new e-clips I'll try and provide the proper size.
    Update:
    1/4" e-clips from Lowes on top $1.21 part # 138751. Found in the special hardware pull out drawers/bins. Did not use a washer on top, just the e-clip.
    To removed the fuse block, two 10mm bolts to the right and possibly one 8mm rear left side, That 8mm also has a phillips head on it. Battery is 10mm bolts as well.

    Sweet! I just bought a used 2002 PT cruiser, but I didn't check it out in reverse when I got it. Sometimes it goes in reverse and sometimes it doesn't. I'll have to take a look at it.

    Thanks Justin! Have a 2002 Dodge Neon with same issue. Found your video and the Neon is set up up same way. Changed worn out bushing with little issue. About 30 min. Want to pass on that its great to find self-fixing videos, but to those trashing professional mechanics/garages/dealerships, very few are "crooks" and out to screw you over. They have employees, overhead, insurance, etc... , also know that if they "cobble" together a fix for you, and you get in an accident, they are liable. I respect my local garage for saying that they won't cobble together a fix. I determine what I feel is safe to do myself and what I want professionally done. So I'm thankful for Justin and my Local Garage

    Thank you Justin ! You saved me hundreds of dollars. I was quoted $548.00 by a mechanic, states the whole cable assembly has to be replaced. I bought part # 14044 at advanced auto today. Phase 1 is done .( the part under the hood ) already shifting much better. Now, on to phase two tomorrow, take that pesky console off. I subscribed to your channel & will refer your channel- A.N

    Appreciate the video. Had to replace my bushings, I could not shift into reverse. Just a quick note. The auto parts store had to order my bushings leaving me needing a temporary fix. 3/8 fuel line is very close to the same inside and outside diameter, and will fit the bushings in the cab under the shifter as well. A few bucks for a six inches of hose, and you can cut about a dozen pieces to get you back on the road.

      White end of cable? Take it off post first. Might only go in one side, from bottom? Search the part # on RUclips, perhaps a video? The black bushings fail quickly, good to see they updated the part. Email me some pictures. jnjshiffler@yahoo.com

    Note: The cable bushing closest to the engine broke down for me rapidly. the kits have 3 bushings, two cables under the battery and I believe the third is for a linkage for the shifter knob/shaft end under the inside console.. I was able to fit the smaller bushing INTO the bigger bushing once I pulled out the remaining bushing "spokes". I RECOMMEND getting the new bushings and filling the "spoke" holes with silicone caulk.

    Is it hard to get that bracket off that holds the power distribution box? On my PT, looks like that needs to be removed before I can get to that one bushing on the right. Thx!

    My PT Cruiser is an automatic. It started having problems getting out of park. I thought it was just the knob sticking because I could push on it and it would go into reverse etc. The other night after I went into the store and came back it wouldn't shift out of park. Brake lights are working fine and responding when I push on the brakes. I don't know if it's the cable, shifter interlock part or something else.

    I first discovered this problem 6 years ago and found a lady that replaced the bushings on the inside end next to the shifter and under the console. See ruclips.net/video/5Atbr8sxkwcI/видео.html I bought bushings and they came as more than one, now I know why.
    There are two cables to replace the bushings on the shifter end. I was part way into this end and found your video and the same bushings, but on the transmission side of the cables.
    I just looked at them and found that they both disintegrated too.
    So while changing one six years ago solved the immediate problem, all four should be done at once. These rubber bushing just fall apart.
    Gonna go find the parts for the transmission side now and I should be done.
    Yes! Always check for the simple fix first. Don't assume the whole transmission is bad.
    For the manual shift transmission, even the top repair manuals say take them to an expert. Too bad they don't touch on these fixes first.
    I wonder how many PT are in junkyards because of these simple fixes.

      I now have a clutch issue. I can shift gears with car off but when running I cannot get clutch to release. Friggin odd that a "worn" clutch can prevent shifting out of gear? WTF? I still suspect something wrong with my clutch lever. I already replaced the clutch hydraulic piston and lines so it's not that.

    • @stephentrujillo7555
      @stephentrujillo7555 2 года назад

      @@JnJShiffler no you either need to adjust the clutch hydraulic pedal. Which is kinda hard cause it's such a tight fit in there. Or there's 2 lines the are under the air filter that holds the clutch line. The stupid bushing is crappy plastic that will completely erode after years. So check those 2 ghings cause I'm doing myself again. Plus ive code for throttlebody censor wich is 60 bucks and another stupid cheap sensor that'll be another 40 bucks the power steering oil pressure sensor. Or something like that. Its on the bottom of the car of course. And the driver side window has went out again for the second time. They charged me 300 bucks to fix 1st time. And I've replaced the clutch. Batteries only last 1 maybe 2 years. This car is a money monster trap. I swear. But hope i helped ya out my friend best of luck . Just look up how to do a clutch pedal adjustment. And the other vid let me fink a link for ta one min ok. I'll post it.

It also went into neutral while driving them I got it back into drive. I was told that I need a new shifter cable all together. Could it just be bushings or the entire cable.

    i take it this is a manual, i have an automatic, i can see the cable doing its thing, by pivoting the pin going down in the transmission, i have an engine light on. What could be the problem, i can not move transmission out of park, the lever in the car goes through its full range of motion. even in neutral, i can not push the car.
