Nice video. Forget about those check cashing places; they will take a percentage of your paycheck or have a flat-rate fee. Bring your Canadian passport and driver's license to a legitimate bank and open up a savings account. Then, deposit your pay checks into that account. You keep the entire amount. You don't want to lose money all year long through check cashing businesses. Whenever you end up leaving Detroit, go to the bank, withdraw whatever is left and close the account. Or, there's a CIBC bank in Birmingham, Michigan that's 30 minutes from Fraser. If you open an account there, then you can access the funds when you go back to Winnipeg or elsewhere in Canada because they are a Canadian bank.
LISTEN TO THIS GUY. No need to be getting paid $125 only for a piece of it to get taken away from some scummy check cashing place.
Banks are just as scummy. Will charge u $20/month to keep your account open. Pay you only 1% interest on your balance… best bet is sign the back of your cheque, mail it home to Mom and have her PayPal u back your cash 💰
@@juiceybrucey3475 OK. So there are savings and checking accounts that have a minimum balance requirement or else they will charge you a maintenance fee. That's true. There are some banks that have a no-maintenance fee savings account in lieu of low or no interest.
Yeah - why use the shady check places? Might have some online bank options too. Avoid anything that makes you carry a min balance. Use the bank's app so you can just cash your check via mobile deposit and use a debit card.

This is what I try to give the 9 year olds I coach, and try to tell their parents. It isn't about who is best now, it is how much you can get the kids to enjoy playing because then they will stay in the sport for as long as possible.

Looks like you're having a good time! Jealous of you and anyone playing hockey and having real games. I sometimes go watch my nephew play and I'm thinking about go for a free skate on a weekend, but I'm hesitant because I know I'm gonna be so sh*t😂. Driving around to search for a place to cash out checks, that's such a foreign concept to me. I noticed Babin is right catching goalie too, probably a perfect match to have fun and trade some experiences and skills. See you in the next one!

Story time... I played in a mens league against Anatoli Semenov. For those who don't know, he was an NHLer for a few teams but IMO more importantly he was a member of the Soviet National Olympic team (watch the documentary about them). I thought I had some skill and was fast... Hell no, I am a damn pylon compared to this guy and AFTER he retired, I can only imagine what he was like in his prime! Skating was effortless, puck handling smooth and fast. Accurate and hard passes, he never shot too hard, I think he went easy on us. It was mind blowing and dream crushing at the same time. When a former World Champion level pro skates with you and pushes you to go faster, while making it look like he isn't even trying.. holy shit, you realize how far you still have to go. Always strive to be better but do not let someone else's ability or words of "you suck or you'll never make it" deter you! You are the master of your own destiny. If you only play the Fed, so be it, still better than every wanna be beer leaguer out there. Livin the dream bud! I'd kill just to have the ice time let alone a team to play with.

Trav. I am so happy that you have such a good relationship with Babs! I have watched most of the Rockers games this season on the youtube feed and every game someone always posts "Lets be honest. Who is here because of Trav?" Every time I see that I say "I am. HOWEVER... Trav led me to the team, but the TEAM and Babs are keeping me here." I follow you because I am a goalie, and we goalies recognize other goalie talent (which is why I am following you.) I LOVE Babs. He has incredible talent. I am definitely as much a Babin fan now as I am a Ridgen fan! Dont get me wrong, I am rooting for you and hope you get your break... but that guy - DANG! I love watching the games, and I WILL get to a Rockers game soon. Keep on keeping on, brother!
One question. What is it like to play in a pro league that (generally) only plays on the weekend? When I looked at the league schedule, it was kind of odd only seeing Friday and Saturday games (with a sprinkling of Wednesday and Sunday games.)

1. Goalie coaches care about how you get hit with pucks because it impacts the next potential chance. Coaches care what their goalie coaches say and care about. You’re at a level where it’s about being there to make that first save, but to be a starter you need to control the flow and pace of the game. You do that by swallowing all the glove and body shots, and kicking all the on ice and blocker shots into the corners.
2. Watch how Babs stays slightly forward, keeping his vision out front so he can see the puck all the time, but also giving him better mechanics to take more depth in tight. You have a tendency to sit back more. I imagine it is actually harder on your hips and knees too.
Keep up the hard work! Your progress has been great so far!

Pro hockey players at any level are so good… even in the lower leagues it’s the 1% best hockey players. And every year there’s another wave of young players coming up, finishing Junior/College and coming to take somebody’s job. The Fed or any level where they’re paying you to be there is definitely not beer league. I know BeerLeague, played it for 20years. Played a few years in top division Beer League too where occasionally a “pro” would make an appearance and they were just better. Not always skill,speed,hands, often it was hockey sense which is hard to measure. Keep at it Trav!
the thing i noticed when you play beer league with guys that have played any level of pro is for the most part they are good guys. if you do the right thing and go to the right spot they will get you the puck, even though they could easily skate through the entire team, tell the goalie where they are gonna beat them, and then do it. It is fun to play with them, and it makes you better.

While I appreciate that you want Babs to get called up to the SP, the mention of tearing a groin made my own (busted) groin twinge just a little more. Any keyboard warrior saying that the Fed is weak because you're playing there should put up or STFU. If they truly believed they could compete, they'd actually be out there trying to get a ATO or PTO. I've been watching your vlog long enough to see your development and growth. Will you ever win the Vezina? Not a chance. Do you deserve kudos for not giving up on your dream? Hell yeah. Keep it up, mate.

It’s looking good. The other day I remember a tip someone told me, when going into the bf, don’t just go down, drive your knees together, as a narrow bf goalie myself I found this pretty helpful.
I think you shouldn’t give so much attention to the money you make with this, because your main money source is RUclips and your sponsors, kind of a reality check that your actual a content creator that happens to play goal. ✌🏼😎

Wow to think i got paid 55 bucks a game for the 2 games i backed up in 2012 for the outlaws...i was the 4th option to play backup lol....the first 3 couldn't make it...was a kool experience
Home team is Elmira mammoth… from a fans standpoint, I think the league is great… I think the team goes, maybe even teams, go out of their way to meet and interact with the fans, especially the younger fans…games are very competitive and affordable…
I was at the game when you played us a month or two ago… never saw a left handed goalie before..
I enjoy the league very much and will continue to support the fphl

The WORST player in the fed would still dominate any beer league man lol the skill level gap between levels of hockey is crazy. I know there is some really good open mens leagues where i am sure players use to play ahl / echl / fed are now in their 30's and still play mens league.... I still stand by tank the worst player in the Fed NOW and they would be one of the better players in most canadian mens beer leagues. Another point, HUGE PROINTS to babs man, starter goalie actively teaching the backup with some pointers during an option skate.... that dude is a legend right there. Or a Beauty as we say

There was an FPHL team in my city but it was killed by Covid. I was a penalty box official for a while and ran the clock for the last season. I miss it. The boys on the team worked hard and just wanted to be better. But I often wondered how players can afford to even live on $125/week. I know the team here put a number of them up in apartments, but it can't be easy even with that.

Cashing checks seems so weird to me.
I think I once saw a cheque book at my grand parents, and I think my mom once said she used some checks back in the 80s, but getting paid with a check in 2022...

Do they still have weekend only players?? Back in 2013 the fed would call a bunch of us to play games on the weekends for teams that had folded. They just searched for guys with NCAA level experience and asked them to play because there wasn’t enough teams left in the league to have an actual season. Everyone had real jobs so could never play on weekday games. They would end up getting 50 year olds from beer league teams who could barley skate. Felt so bad for the guys who actually played in the league…Luckily it seems to be much more stable now but the caliber of players seems to be all low level Jr and club guys. Use to have a decent amount of former NCAA and some CHL

Man I played in the fed 12 years ago and the league min was 175 and I was making 300/wk. we also didn’t have the highest inflation in the last 40 years. Boys gotta be struggling. Why? Why do you still have cheques? With all the development that has been done, you still use checks that can be the least secure way to pay, or get paid, with? Watching you guys run around to get these paid out is completely under the ice. Everyone has a credit/debit card linked to an account in a bank that has its clearing number to which an employer can transfer money directly without passing through intermediaries who in turn want to be paid for that service.

its 5th league for north america and its pro hockey. i believe most players work other jobs since the pay is so low.
These guys either get supplemental income from family or work other jobs too. $500/month wouldn't get you into a decent apartment in his area, if it did you still wouldn't get food, water, electric, heat, etc let alone money to go anywhere with. I live about an hour drive from Fraser where he plays.
Like others have said Trav, find a legit bank that'll let you open an account with your passport and visa then just live normal instead of check cashing places that will always take a % off. Also walmart won't cash hand written checks which is why they said they can't cash them for you.
