The Sacred Tattoos Of Thailand

- In Thailand, everything is connected to Buddhist culture, including their traditional tattoo, Sak Yant.
Sak Yant given by monks or masters are believed to bestow mystical powers, passing down till today, it has become a combination of Buddhism and art. Modern Sak Yant improved by senior monks are said to offer benefits such as good fortune, power or charisma.
We followed A Long, an amulet dealer from Guangzhou, to visit some Sak Yant masters, and then went to the annual Wai Khru ceremony which turned out to be even wilder than any metal music festival. The tattoo wearers, so-called the disciples would come to the ceremony once a year to pay tribute to their masters, some of them got possessed by deities and went on a rampage, it was really a hardcore scene to see.

I'm born and raised in Thailand, and this "culture" is extremely ridiculous to me. I just want to educate everyone that this is not real Buddhism, but a "parasitic" cult/believes that is benefiting off of corrupted religion. I'm not blaming the producer to have produce the content in such way, as it is confusing (even for the local). But I just want to point out that this is not a true Buddhism that most of the people believes in or practice.
As a Thai, you should know better that Thai Buddhism is the mixture of Animism, Hinduism, and Buddhism. There is no such a thing as "Pure/real Buddhism" in Thailand since the start. Moreover, Buddhism was imported into Suvarnabhumi region as a tool for the warlords to rule the people. You can see it clearly that every Thai Royal ceremonies always performance both Hinduism and Buddhism rituals.

No wrong Buddhism is not mixture of Brahmin's culture and it is fabricated Information about Buddhism by Brahmin's (arayans).
Buddhism is heterodox ( non- Theists) school of Rationalist)
School of Indian sub-continent like jain , aajivika , lokayata.
And it is historical facts, no one can change.
Buddha belong to Dravidian people's , the who was founders of sharmana culture ( non-theists) and advance Indus velly civilization.
Note:- in Brahamins Religious Scriptures they already mentioned he was atheist , the reason behind it , they said buddha rejected the authority of Vedas god's .
Then after buddha became the enemy of Brahmins ( founder of Vedic aryan Brahmin religion aka sanatan Dhrama , The new like hindu ( Greek word)).
@@thegreatkinglankanareshrav2605 The originality, doctrine, or purity of Hinduism and Buddhism not matter when it comes to Buddhism in Thailand. Those religions landed in this area long time ago, ppl twisted, modified, or improvised them as they see fit. And it happens everywhere. Buddhism landed in Japan, merged with their local belief then turned out to be Shinto and Zen. Even, those who claimed that they are real and pure Buddhists, who knows what Buddha would say about their belief... why? cos Buddha has long gone, how can they be so sure that their belief is the same one as 2,xxx years ago. Lots of Thais know really well that Buddha's belief is atheistic but they don't care, they just treat Buddha as their another God... That's all.

These are a form of shamanism , ancient spiritual practices that originated from ancient Khmer's who practice Theravada buddhism, not only does it exist in Thailand or Thai culture but also the surrounding countries such as Laos. Yes, this is part of our culture and beliefs especially in the northern regions, due to complex interweaving of local and translocal religious ideas, movements, rituals, practices, and persons over time it has become a common practice of buddhists in south east asia. Every religion has sacred symbols and rituals which then becomes part of culture, why are non thais or anyone who have no deep understanding of certain cultures commenting as if they do? theres so much you dont know and understand.
I totally agree 💯
Most cultures believe that tattoos are in some way portals or gateways (for lack of better term) for entities to manipulate you whether good or bad, many use temporary ones for rituals however because they believe the portal/gateway shouldnt remain open. i always found it weird seeing so many farang with sak yant. of course anyone can get these tattoos regardless of race or ethnicity, but most foreigners get them for the sake of aesthetic. i’m thai myself and follow buddhism to a degree, but i don’t think it would be proper for me to get a sak yant since it’s very sacred and spiritual.

@@ba5tardbc it has a deep spiritual meaning. A contract almost.
Got two of these sak yant tattoos done in Thailand. Not for the idea of gaining "abilities or powers" but because the designs are beautiful and the words of scripture mean something to me. Sometimes it feels like I just did a dumb tourist move and maybe I did but not everyone get them done in order to gain something. It's more of a personal way to appreciate Muay Thai culture and solidifying the memory of my time there. Maybe I'm coming across as ignorant but just wanted to say that there is more to it than all this hysteria in the video.
Uh dude. What was in this video was definitely more than your superficial tourist bs.
You're good
I just got back from Thailand where my partner is from and went with locals to very local shop that doesn't get many foreigners and I did the exact same thing. I love the designs and also the meaning and it was a way to show my love to thai culture and muay thai culture as well as marking my trip (first overseas trip). I love it and not that it would matter but I have got all positive comments in Thailand and back home in Australia :)
You can do it just for the sake of doing it, it’s not ignorant nor does it give you power. However the process of getting a tattoo with power includes you bounding a spell or a spirit to your self, and they usually need incantation, ceremonies, and set rule.
For example if you want to have good fortune you can go to a shaman where he’ll give you a tattoo and enchant a spell of fortune with it, but he’ll give you a rule that you cannot break like killing, lying, stealing, etc or it can be a vow such as you’ll ordain into monk hood, give sacrifices, etc, you’ll have good fortune asking as you live with the rules and not break them, but the moment you do break the rule or vow you’re pretty much F U C K E D.
@[̲̅$̲̅(̲̅ ͡ಠ ͜ʖಠ)̲̅$̲̅] yant, that the word for tatoos are sak, and the word for physical incantations or talismans is yant, so what you call the special istatoo is sak yant or just yant which means getting a tattoo of an incantation or talisman onto your skin

Same rule applies; most 'Christians' aren't. Most Buddhists aren't either. For that matter most professors of any particular belief just claim so and live/ believe whatever suits them.

I can explain why. Mega churches inherit a lot from the spiritual and shamanistic practices of enslaved Africans. “Catching the Holy Ghost” bares similarities to voodoo and ifa possessions. To vice Asia do you know the origin of the call sak? And what letter of country these Thai write on body ?
That depends on where you visit to get a sak yant. More than 1000 years ago, before modern political borders were formed and before many of the ancient empires existed (such as Angkor, Sukhothai, Lanna, and Bagan), magic hand poked tattoos were found all over the region. When Buddhism was introduced to the region, and empires formed (starting around the 12th century AD), and Sanskrit languages started evolving into modern day Khmer, Thai, Lanna, and Burmese, the tattoos took on new characters for the magic incantations, as well as adopting Hindu Yantric designs and deities.
Since then political borders have changed into the countries we know now of Cambodia, Thailand and Myanmar - all which still practice the ancient tattoos, though often you will see old characters from past empires still being used in the regions where the old political borders once ruled... so in central Thailand (once part of the Angkorian empire), you would find Khmer letters, while in Northern Thailand, they use Lanna characters, and in Shan state of Myanmar, they use old Burmese characters.

Theravada Buddhism came to Mon Kingdom
of Northern Suvarnabhumi since Ashoka Maharaj of Magadha in 250BCE and spread through the entire Southeast Asia during Dwaravati Empire in 11th century CE. While the Southern and Eastern Suvarnabhumi were influenced by Mahayana Buddhism during Srivijaya Empire in 5th century CE. Also, Hinduism came to Suvarnabhumi in 1st century CE during Champa and Funan Empire. So, the culture has been mixed up to the present time.

those people need help. Also, all these things are more of Hindu beliefs than Buddhist. If Buddha thinks that tattoo can keep you safe and give you power there is no need for Buddha's Dhamma.
What, not really, but at the same time yes hindu warriors originally put them on for protect

*Some facts about Kru Muay Association* The Kru Muay Association originated from the separation of the amateur Muay Thai from the professional Muay Thai. This division pursued the goal to have Muay Thai recognized as an Olympic discipline by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). A project that has not been successful until today. The officials of professional Muay Thai would like to have nothing to do with Kru Muay. For them this club is only a necessary evil. If you take a closer look, you will notice that all the so-called traditional teachers of the Kru Muay Thai Association have simply appointed each other as teachers and are now worshipped by wealthy foreigners once a year. The whole association is very political, but has less fighting competence than an average boxer in Rajadamnern Stadium or a Buakauw (who is a Cambodian and not a Thai by the way). Despite comprehensive state support, the Kru Muay Association still has no coherent teaching concept for traditional Muay Boran and Muay Thai is still not Olympic.
