I’m with you. Orange is warmest, blue is coolest. And, for this reason, I don’t believe there is such a thing as “warm blue” (let the brawl begin) since either side of blue on the colour wheel approaches orange. And no “cool orange” either, though I almost never hear that one.
Totally agree! Blue can shift either toward green or red and in either case gets warmer. I guess the real question is what color is considered to be pure blue? I've never really tried to answer that question, but I guess at this point in my life I'd maybe put my money on cobalt blue. Thanks for watching!
@@JasonTako I rarely use cobalt but would support it as “‘blue”. I guess from the point of view of physics, there is a pigment that is closest to blue but, for our needs, it’s somewhere between cerulean and ultramarine :)
Hi Jason, I just watched several of your RUclips videos today and am so impressed with your methodological approach to plies air painting that I decided to subscribe to your channel. I really like how you go all out to produce colours that match the scene in front of you. Have you made a video detailing how you mix your colours?
Hi Paul, thanks for watching and subscribing! I'm not sure if a video detailing how I mix my colors would help since you are already seeing all the color mixing and how I do it in my plein air videos. Was there something more specific you were thinking?
Curious if you have ever seen paintings by Bucks County PA artist Daniel Garber? His backgrounds are usually quite detailed as seen in Spring Panel 1931 painting. Seems in this painting he thought the background was as important as the foreground tree.
New subscriber here. I'm enjoying your tips Jason. So helpful. What did you call the area as the highlight wraps around the tree and becomes darker and warmer?
Hi Katherine! Thanks for subscribing! I can't remember everything I said, but you may be talking about the "core" area of the shadow. This is the area of the shadow that isn't affected by either the primary light source (in this case the sun) and the secondary source of light, which would be the weak, subtle cool light created by the blue of the sky. This area is the darkest part of the shadow.
Thanks so much! The brand of pochade box I use is called Open Box M. They are custom made. Not cheap but really good! I have the 11x14 size. Here is their website: www.openboxm.com/#/
Nice work Jason, I noticed you paint with quite thin paint at times I have difficulty in laying down a thin line or mark on wet paint, what tips can you give to help lay down these thin marks; do you use more medium liquid or linseed oil any advice would be appreciated.
Hi Paul. When I'm plein air painting the only thing I use is minerals spirits, the cheap stuff from the hardware store. To put down a thin line or mark on wet oil paint you need to make sure you have a nice amount of paint on your brush or palette knife, and lay it down gently.

@@JasonTako I should’ve said instead of going from RUclips and clicking that site. I actually looked you up on the Internet and went to your website when I did it from your website at first I couldn’t sign up for anything. I can’t remember the message but you should check your website, it’s fine on RUclips. I was able to put my name on a waiting list but I wanted to let you know that there’s some kind of glitch. looking forward to your classes.

Yes I have. He was an incredible artist. Different approach than what I like but he handled it so well.

Great video, tks for sharing. FYI, some people attract misquotes and in your case, you attract motorcycles.......Just say'n
LOL!! That could be. I think I attract lawn mowers as well.
there is a great little painting waiting in the upper right-hand corner of this video.....

Is that a diy pochade box?
No. Open Box M.
Why do you tape your painting surface to your pochade box?
Hi Ann, I don't tape the canvas to my pochade box. I tape it onto a hardboard panel which is attached to my pochade box.
Painting bigger would also be nice.
If you want to capture quickly changing light in a realistic manner, painting small works a lot better than painting large.
Losing the text messages would be nice.
Losing that noisy motorcycle would have been nice also.
