    These are just really cool modems, I'll be doing more in-depth on how these operate but for now you can check them out here: elekitsorparts.com/product/npr-70-modem-by-f4hdk-new-packet-radio-over-70cm-band-amateur-radio-packet-radio
    This isn't a sponsored video, I paid out of pocket for these a year ago and just finally got around to doing a video on them.

    Frankly I need more of this. The concept of hosting a Minecraft server (even if it has higher latency, it's not a competitive game) or a Quake III/OpenArena server, completely over Ham Radio? Astounding! I want to try it myself but just can't justify all the costs for what is going to be a small hobby project.

    That is without a doubt the coolest demonstration of what can be done with NPR that i've ever seen. I've been trying to come up with something to use/want one for, if i just had another ham within range that wants to play UT!

    This is excellent and definitely a theme you should delve into & explore
    It would be interesting to see what range you can achieve with this and how bitrate degrades over distance etc
    Excellent taste in the chosen games too! UT 99 is a good choice to demonstrate the low bandwidth, but low latency requirement where as C&C (I imagine) is useful to demonstrate the opposite especially when loads of movements need to be sent across the network during an attack etc (I always knew when one was coming as my network would chug down to bps)
    Where as UT 2004 offers a balance of the two
    Great work keep it up 💪🏻👍🏻

      Thanks, I certainly want to try more long distance stuff.
      There was a time I nearly had one of these on a commercial tower, but I didn't have the money for the amplifiers, filters etc at the time.

      Hello, I am F4HDK, from France, the designer of these NPR70 modems, and the NPR70 protocol.
      I can tell you, the datarate is not adaptative, unlike modern protocols (WiFi, cellular phone 3G, 4G). Therefore the datarate do not decrase over distance, but the link becomes unreliable with lots of packet errors if your signal is too weak. The modulation parameters is not adaptative, and they are frozen once for the "Master-repeater", by the "sysop" of the Master-repeater.
      For max distances, it really depends on the antenna you use. With a high gain colinear antenna at Master side, and directional yaggi antennas (10 elements for ex) at Client side, you can achieve several dozens of km. Even with partially obstructed path.

    In UT99, you need a) to set the line speed to Modem 56K (Options\Preferences\Network\Modem 28.8-56K) b) use Mutator ZeroPing

    • @SignalsEverywhere
      @SignalsEverywhere  2 года назад

      It is already set to 56k modem but I will look into the zero ping mutator for the next time I set this up

    • @madmax2069
      @madmax2069 2 года назад +1

      yeah, zeroping is pretty good for back in the day, back in the day with a horrible dialup service playing instagib you usually always hit what you shot at. NEWNET would probably be a better choice as it will work well for all weapons not just hitscan weapons. NEWNET also has lag compensation whereas zeroping doesn't.

      @madmax2069 2 года назад +1

      @@AlexanderJ yeah, but if you're playing multiplayer by these means NewNet is going to be your best bet, as zero ping only works for hitscan weapons, it won't work with ballistic based weapons.

    i wonder if it comes with basic antennas?
    have you done any range test?
    most importantly... i wish if there is a video that shows how to setup? do you have one?
    this is really great
    i hope to see more videos like this
    this is a game changer once hooked up to an amplifier
    i may contemplate buying when i have the cash..
    mant thx again

    Awesome. Nicely done. I've considered remotely monitoring my shack while it's doing something else, like satellites. But, I'm not sure what the regs/restrictions are in that regard. An example use case is -- while mobile using 70cm -- monitor my home QTH while it records weather sat data. Not necessarily control the home station though. Curious if others have thoughts.

    • @SignalsEverywhere
      @SignalsEverywhere  2 года назад +1

      Depends on the amount of data going over the connection and the distance you need to cover.
      These can work in a mobile/omni-directional setup but the documentation for them recommends using the two slowest data modes for that purpose.
      When you say monitor the QTH while it records sat data, what is it exactly you want to monitor? Just the images it pulls in, the software itself, or maybe the whole desktop?
      There may be a number of solutions but it's hard to say if this is the right fit without some additional detail.

      @@SignalsEverywhere Thanks, that's super helpful. I was thinking things like server pings, temperature in the shack, then maybe move into thumbnail images or more complex stuff. Edit: yes, and distance is an issue. I'd say within a short distance, under 20 km

    • @SignalsEverywhere
      @SignalsEverywhere  2 года назад +1

      I imagine things like server pings and temperature should be fairly easy to do while setting the modems to the lower speeds.
      And amplifier will likely be necessary and possibly a directional antenna on at least one of the two ends but it should be doable.
      I'm planning to put one in the car so that way I can drive around and do a test with it at some point. Just to see how far I can push it.
      I also wanted to thank you for your support on patreon, it is very much appreciated!

      These will not function over HF, none of the supported symbol rates are legal on HF nor does the hardware support HF.

    I have been eyeing getting a set of these. My interests falls along connecting them to my AREDN network as well as ATV. Any tricks and secrets in a future video will be appreciated. Finally, a great way to engage interest in using them with a real world demo of what they can actually do in terms of throughput. 73 de KM6TRZ

      I haven't seen any demonstrations of them that show it being used for much more than email so I thought this would be a fun way to kick it off.
      You do need a router on one end for things to work properly but this seemed to work fairly well.
      I plan to try ATV with this among other things, let me know if there's anything you'd like me to try out over a link.
