Don't worry you could see the spraying!! You did great Vicky.
Good, I'm glad. Yes Vicki is really good with the camera. I couldn't do it without her....
27:15
Thank YOU so much for muting the
loud sound of the sander...
This is a great video/tutorial...
I paint signs, don't do this beautiful
woodworking way you'll do... but I do
admire your art....
You're welcome Judy, I'm trying to do that more. We all have our things, and painting isn't one of mine. I'm sure you do beautiful work. You would probably make a great sign carver as well.
Hello Mr Dave. If I could only get one bit to start carving which would be your suggestion? Thanks. Started watching your videos back from 2009. Got my first router a week ago.
If I had to pick only one, it would be the 60 degree. Thank you for watching for so long. Fire that thing up and make some sawdust. Have fun!!!
I know you use the Critter Sprayer a lot. I don't have a large compressor (yet) only 110 psi brad nailer/stapler compressor. Can I get the same results from spray cans or should be brushing on finish?
I would stay with the spray cans for first 2 coats. Then lightly hand sand, I use 220 grit. Then if you want it to build up faster you can put on a brush coat or 2. Then hand sand again. Then a thin last coat with a spray can.
Great video, reminded me why I began watching you. AND get Vicki a dust mask!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you Bill.... Yes I will get her a mask....
Love the video information.... question.... how dep did you go with profile bit and how deep was 90° bit? When you spray sealer outside does it attract dust particles .... everytime I do this my surface is rough and bumpy? Could be also that I am on east coast and humid so everything take lot longer to dry if outside so now I do inside house with a clean room and using a fan but I use brush on gloss sealer Arm N Seal.
Hi Smith, I was approx. 1/4" deep with both the profile and the 90. When you apply any finish or even water to a bare board it raises the grain. That why you should lightly hand sand after the 1st coat. Especially if it feels rough. Some woods will raise the grain more than others. I used to brush on my finish and it always felt rougher that spraying it on. What may help is lightly hand sanding in between every coat. I would used very fine sand paper 1000 grit of you can.
Great Video Eric.
98 % of my signs i make, is inset letters.
The people here in Sweden seems to like the inset more than the outset for some reason.
I use the 60 degree bit all the way...both for the inset carving and taking out the material.
By the way....i love the smell of a new made sign !!
My wife thinks I'm strange that way...he he :)
Have a great day Buddy !!
/ Morgan Stoltz, Sweden
Thank you Morgan, glad you liked it. Yea lots of ways to do it. We all have our favorites. Funny how inset letters are more popular over there. It's a mix for me over here. Have a great day and Thank you again for watching my friend...
Well my favorite is doing outset, i think that is more fun :)
More carving, more fun !!
/ Morgan
Hi Eric Colin in England just starting up can you tell me the video number for adding an acrylic base plate supplied by you and just received today thank you , love this new hobby of mine , and you guys
Here's a link, Thank you again for watching and for the business. ruclips.net/video/75FzDhQx4Fk/видео.html
I’m new to your videos and wondering if you can tell me how to sharpen the cutters? Or tell me which video to watch if you’ve already explained this? Thank you in advance!
We've done several videos on this. Check out #164 & LTS 8/27/17. This should help. Thank you again for watching, Eric. You can always email me directly with questions, eric@makeawoodsign.com.
Another superb tutorial Eric and a lovely sign mate. Keep up the good work and many thanks to the Rhoten family for all the time and effort you put in to produce these videos. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the victims and families of of the terrible incident that took place in Las Vegas.xx
Thank you so much, we absolutely appreciate you watching and all the wonderful support. Yes we are still praying the LV people.
I went ahead and got a 60’ and 90’. To be clear I just got a router recently and found your videos. But I went back and watched your older videos first! Lol. Not that I’ve been waiting 9 years to carve! Thanks and I will keep watching!
Does the Helmsmans have to be thinned for use in the Critter? I've had to thin paint quite a bit for the Critter to properly spray.
I don't thin it at all. I spray it at around 50 psi.
Awesome tutorial, you've given inspiration ❤️ thank you.
My pleasure, Sheila
great video nice letters .i will keep you posted on my progress with my estimate .always great watching you .
Thank you Emil....
Hi Dave, why do you use the router backwards, when you do the edge shamfer
I use the router both ways. Doesn't seem to be a problem for me either way.
Hi Eric... You didn´t stamp your logo on the sign when you have to do it? or you don´t do it?
Yes I normally do just was in a hurry and forgot....
Great video as always. What are your thoughts on the use of a drum sander to put the board through after priming?
It's not a bad idea if your sign is perfectly flat. If it has any kind of cup to it doesn't work too well.
Great video I'm really looking at the critter sprayer alot easier the hand brushing
I think you'll love it..
Çok güzel olmuş. Emeklerinize sağlık.
Thank you!!!
Should the router not be moved in a ccw direction so the rotation of the bit does not tend to run away? When you were putting the bevel on the edge you went clockwise.
I do either way. Because I'm using soft woods mostly and not going very deep it doesn't make a difference for me.
Eric, do you see yourself going to bulk ink in the future, with the critter being so easy to use?
I've been thinking about that, just haven't done it yet.
How much did you get for a sign like that
I really don't remember, I would say about $120
That's OK Vickie, we think he's mesmerizing too. :o)
LOL.....
Did you say 3 coats of the finish, also good tip on the primer in passing
Yes 3 or 4 coats depending on the board and how it covers... Thank you for watching, Eric

Vicki, Are those pigs your pets, or are they going to be dinner someday? Great video
These pigs are friends, not food. There names are Toot and Snort... Thank you
I would like to see more of them.. Did you get them from piglets? How old are they now? What kind of pigs are Toot and Snort.? Are they free range? You guys have Mountain lions I think, do you round them up at night?
What dust containment system are you using while sanding and routing?
A broom & dust pan... Sorry, I couldn't resist... We don't have any dust collection system.
Dave Rhoten 🤣🤣🤣🤣
How much do you charge for a sign
It depends on lots of factors. Email me the details, size and what you want it to say. Eric@makeawoodsign.com. Thank you for asking.

Question, do you sand between coats of finish or do you just spray the next coat without sanding?

Yes, lots of different sizes and font styles, on the website makeawoodsign.com under "Sign Carving Supplies".
Where do you sell your signs? Etsy? I guess better question is how do customers find you?
Currently by word of mouth and our website. However we been around so long it's not the same for people brand new to this. There are so many different ways these days. I have lots of video with iseas on how to market signs. I don't know if you know how to use our channel search so here's a video on that. ruclips.net/video/BXwyv7XU34s/видео.html about 7 min in on this video you will see the channel search. If type Marketing into our channel search you find lots of video with tons of ideas. Hope this helps. If you have more questions feel free to email me directly, eric@makeawoodsign.com
