Thanks guys! It's good to see and hear several times how things should be done...it takes me about 7 times to really "get it", so don't worry about repeating yourself! I've made some nice signs lately, thanks to the info I get from you. And I bought one of the clear router bases with the two handles...what a difference in my accuracy and precision! I'm wondering if you could set up a picture album of all the signs your students are making, so we could all see them? Keep up the good work...Omar

Cedust sneezes (Ceder Sawdust sneeze), I understood that (at 21:58). I have had to start using a respirator for exactly THAT reason.
Another GREAT demo and something that really suites me just fine. After five years of you teaching me how to carve, I FINALLY feel a little more confident to go out and try making some inset letters. As you know, I have been staying away from inset lettering, and when I DO have to do inset letters, I do it with the profile bit. For me, a MUCH better looking letter.
We have been set up this week at our County Fair, and wow, the response has been really spectacular, and I owe it all to you two guys. Thank you a million times. Only two days left, and I hope to see you there again this year.

+Dave Rhoten Happy Monday (at last) Eric and Dave. Well, the Fair was a GREAT success. On Saturday alone I sold EIGHT (8) signs from my booth, and all but one will be picked up on Friday at the Fair Office (prior arrangements were made). Some of these orders came from people that saw me last year, and some from people that saw me in Oatman, and a few were spur of the moment orders.
All in all, this years Fair was a bigger success than any past year, and it keeps on getting better and better.
Thank you again my Friends for all the encouragement and help you have given me over the years.

I totally agree with Dave's comment near the end about it looking like it was robot carved. After all those years of carving you really do make it look great, and easy. I recently bought the profile and the 60 degree bits from you and can't wait to use them. I have a full size porter cable but I am going to wait for my 611 to be delivered in a few days to use them.( After I modify it.) Thank you also for your marketing tips video. do you always leave some wood on the inset letters , you never carve it out flat, or it just looks better with wood left in between the letters, has this always been your way of doing inset letters ? help me out with this, i may do that myself, i guess i like the clean flat look around the letters, thanks again Dave and Eric, send me an answer, your Cajun from Louisiana Rouxso.
Thanks so much for watching and the nice compliments. It's just a personal preference for me. I like texture down in the carving. However I have many people that watch our stuff that like the clean flat look better. It's Just a matter of trying different ways and see what you like best. The cool thing is it's all fun.... regarding the LTS free gift. yes i saw it and downloaded it. i did not know it was the gift but thought maybe it was. in time all things will be revealed so for me waiting paid off. Thank you. I also agree with Omar repeating things now and then is good because you don't always repeat them the same way and the information may assimilate with someone differently, human beings are diverse like that.

Probably not the same hole pattern for mounting. We have a blank that would work. All you would need to do is drill and countersink mounting holes. Everything else is done. Email me directly if I can answer any other questions for you, eric@makeawoodsign.com. Thanks again for watching!!!

If I weren't making videos then that's probably what I would do. However I do like trying different routers and doing reviews on them for the channel.
Eric i stained my sign waited 3 days for it to dry as instructed then applied 3 coats of polyurethane as instructed and i find the final finish to be rough. how can i make it smooth and really shiny as i would like it to be, i need your help with this issue. give me some step by step instructions, Help!!!! send me some good info, as this is another sign i have made with your letters and your very good videos and as usual i am waiting for a solution from you, thanks again your Cajun friend from South Louisiana Rouxso.
I answered your email but I'll answer here too. I always lightly hand sand in between coats with 220 grit or finer. That should do it. Thank you!!!
I seen someone put that clear poly on their work kind of heavy then use a hair drier, it turned out very shiny, what he says slightly sand it after each coat because any kind of paint needs a profile to stick to. I would of thought of that, nice work he explained very well my first one turned out like crap, lol don’t have much money to buy expensive bits got a table for Christmas 200 bucks router was about the same but it has plugger and set base. I’m new at this to

Hey Dave, Great time watch all your videos (you’ve got a lot of them). I have made signs for along time now as a hobby for myself, family and friends, just for fun. I like to paint them. (I’m still working on the Live Simply sign). I found your channel not too long ago and I’ve really enjoyed learning from your videos. I even went and bought several of your router bits. I think they will improve my work. I went and built myself the router base plate, and modified the router housing as in your videos. However, I found that even with making that hole, I wanted more light directly on the work. I have now modified my Mikita RT0701C to allow an led to be installed in the housing. I drilled out one of the existing holes in the base with 23/64” drill bit.
I then inserted the led ( with a little Glue), and wired it to a 12v power supply (wall wart)

Here’s what it looks like and it works great. I also attached an inline switch along the Makita cord so I can turn off the led.

What do you do when you come to a knot in the wood?
I watch for them when I'm planning the layout. If it's a loose knot then I stabilize it with CA glue or resin before I do the layout. If it's a tight knot I will carve through it if I can't work around it with the layout.
@@oldave100 Eric, sorry another question please. To help cut straight and around corners, would it be easier to cut in stages lowering the bit a little at a time? Mike
No worries about questions, always happy to help. Cutting in multiple passes can help sometimes especially If you're cutting very hard material. However the most important things to remember is having the right bits, and keeping your hands on the router and the wood at the same time. I'm trying to figure out what depth to use with the 60° bit and 2 1/2 letters. I don't think the depth was mentioned in the video. I wish I had your steady hands. My letters are somewhat ragged.
without knowing the font and what it looks like it's hard to say for sure. With 2 1/2" letters you sound be able to go pretty deep. It really is more about the width of the cut. Go as deep as you can as long as it still stays within the lines if you're cutting inset. Hope this makes sense.
