Just amazing craftmansip. Leo is doing so much work to showcase skills through multi generations, whilst preserving what will be a piece of history, not only of the boat but also of the crafts.
You might enjoy some of the videos by Inheritance Machining then. Usually a short design segment featuring handmade engineering drawings. One video wholly about it.
To look back at the first videos to see Leo working by himself and then to see the workmanship of the entire team today and the quality of the work and parts is quite amazing. I can't imagine Leo could look at the boat today and say that it reflects his original vision. What a journey!!
I would say if he looked at the state of the boat today, he'd be absolutely blown away at how far it is already exceeding his original vision. This isn't just a restoration. There's too much love in the boat for such a simple word.
I would argue that the current position and team not only reflect Leo's original vision, but meet, comply with and exceed that vision. The project carries the original concept of restoring, rebuilding and resurrecting the Strange yacht, as Strange designed it, but updated to the point of practicality. The over-riding constant, though, is craftmanship...
I cannot imagine anyone who has watched Leo's earliest videos would share your view about the current boat reflecting Leo's original vision. I would enjoy having Leo comment but I am quite sure he expected to take on this project out of love with the intention of doing the as much work on his own to practically restore TallyHo. The funds which Leo has been able to raise and the continuing support he has received from the viewership I am quite sure have wildly exceeded his original expectations (as well as mine), all well deserved and earned!
@@cb88888I would say that in terms of the work, he probably envisioned doing a lot of the work himself, but as for the vision, he probably always envisioned the highest level of craftsmanship.
It's amazing how many modern systems and amenities you are able to cram into a ship that wasn't at all designed to accommodate them, _without_ breaking much if any of the original aesthetic.
Four words… “ the tiny little plane”! PLEASE show some info on the tiny plane used on the stair tread joint. I’ve never seen such attention to detail. A true craftsman. (It looks like it’s made of brass, has a blade, and is adjustable! One can only imagine sharpening it.)
If all the historical owners of Tally Ho could see what Leo is building here, they'd be totally blown away. It's the same boat but updated to the 21st century. Luxury has been replaced with perfectionism in terms of usability and craftsmanship. Probably only a master boat builder AND accomplished sailor could pull this off, with the help of crowd funding and a lot of very talented people. Leo's had a positive impact on a lot people, all around the world. That's remarkable.
This sailing yacht has truly been built back to a level of craftsmanship that dwarfs its original build. The level of detail is a blend of art and craftsmanship. Hopefully it will receive the care and upkeep required to preserve it fo another 100 years as well as provide enjoyment to all those lucky enough to sail on her.
@@tomasnagy4518 Yes it is a piece of Art now but thats what she deserved. I think the original builders and owners would approve. The original form and contcept are still there. Out of all the many embedded advertisements that youtube videos have, the Duchess is the ONLY advertisement that I not only watch... but look forward to. It is especially appropriate given that sailors putting on plays (where they played both male and female roles) was an "Immemorial custom of the Navy!" to steal the oft repeated quote of the esteemed Captain Aubrey (Patrick O'Brian). REALLY looking forward to mast stepping video... that's a huge milestone!
I was watching a lot of sailing and boat renovation videos, when first episode of Tally ho was aired, and the algorithm shot it my way straight away. My first thought was this would be interesting to watch, just from the look of Tally ho at the time. I honestly didn't gave the project many chances of reaching a successful end, but I am so happy to have had to eat those words since. Best channel on RUclips and the absolutely only one where I look forward to seeing the advertisement for the sponsors!!!😂😂😂😂
Finally watched through all the episodes to get to the latest one! And all that only because I watched Keith Rucker repairing Tally Ho's capstan. This series makes me want to drop my IT job, do some proper manual work and create something physical.
That's the tiniest little plane I've ever seen. Covering all the bases in the engine room, nice, smart. Those stairs are beautiful, love the bronze hinging. I continue to be amazed at the woodworking skills the crew does. Gonna be one of the most beautiful boats ever built. When you shave off the wooden plugs it doesn't even mar the paint. Shows how flat the chisel is. Precision.
For information, a Panama lead is a fair lead which is situatied in the bow/stern on the center line of the ship. it's a requirement for ships that pass the Panama Canal. The steel wires to the locomotives that pull the ships trough the locks are passed trough these centerline located panama leads :).
What is Panama Fairlead? A non-roller type fairlead mounted at the ship’s side and enclosed so that mooring lines may be led to shore with equal facility either above or below the horizontal. Strictly pertains only to fairleads complying with Panama Canal Regulations, but often applied to any closed fairlead or chock.
The companionway steps video was the very first Tally Ho video I watched. Then I wanted to know how you plank a boat so watched the start of the planking process. Then I thought I need to see Tally Ho from the beginning and so I binge watched all the episodes over a few months. I got up to date about three months ago and now it’s agony waiting every two weeks for the next episode to drop. Great to see the companionway steps installed at last, fantastic craftsmanship as always. Also great to see Pancho keeping an eye on your progress.
I’m truly amazed at Bob’s attention to detail, and that says a lot when we also have Pat, Clifton, Zeal and Leo doing amazing work (I mean no disrespect whatsoever to the other craftspeople who are doing excellent work)! Bob really shows new skills each time we get to see him in action!
The fit and finish of the ladder is exceptional. The design of the vents are ingenious, not to mention Bob's craftsmanship in fabricating and installing them. Fine work on the traditional kevel cleats, reminiscent of those on Luke Powell's SV Pellew. And, what's with the uncanny obsession with hair throughout these comments? It's a boat restoration.
Each and every episode reveals more incredible engineering craftsmanship and the time to both, that goes into Tallyho !! I simply cannot imagine building the giant sailing ships centuries ago .. Literally hundreds of skilled tradesmen .. What a sight that would have been to witness ❤
Extracting Tally Ho from the shed is going to be an involved birth in its own right...... Worthy of both a Duchess of Desire send off, as well as an extra length episode.
I'm amazed... utterly amazed, every installment of this build... top tier craftsmanship. I've been watching since you bought Tally Ho and you never strayed from the best of everything. Absolutely beautiful. Rock on Leo and team, you're amazing.
Holy cow, I have been watching you every step of the way, all the way from day one in Bandon when you bought Tally Ho for a dollar and I was wondering what the hell did you just do?! Pulling planks out by hand... And now geez louise you continue to amaze and your team continues to amaze. When I go to my day job and build a custom house and I am presented with some challenge or other I always think, "now what would Leo do? How would Leo approach this problem?", and I get to it with a lighter step. You, sir, are an inspiration. Thank you! Cheers
I have watched The Whole Process from Start To Finish Leo , and I am Agog with Anticipation for Tally Ho to Begin its Lifes Journey to Places Far and Wide !!!! You and your Talented Crew are some of The Best and Brightest that I have ever seen , and Tally Ho will be A Great Success because of You and them , I`m sure !!!! Keep Up The Good Work Leo !!!

Leo, the workmanship over these years has been impressive. Today I admiring the combination of fine wood, mentally worked with fine tools and even Finner workmanship. Tally Ho is becoming a true work of art, to perfect to get wet. Find a to sail oceans without getting Tally Ho and crew WET! AMEN.
A friend once asked me what was the difference between other RUclips boatbuilders and Leo? and why should they watch Leo? I told him that most boatbuilders build to about an 8 - 9 out of 10 in terms of quality and craftsmanship. I said Leo builds to a 12. The artistry, craftmanship, and total respect for wooden boatbuilding is nothing short of perfection. Someday this "build" will end, and that will be a sad day.
The craftsmanship and quality of materials in Tally Ho is breathtakingly good. I just hope the finished product isn’t too heavy. What if it turns out to be a slow boat?
@@snowstrobe it is a compartment below decks in the stern of the vessel where all sorts of odds and ends are stored. Leo mentioned tossing fenders in there. It is pretty much a catch-all for stuff that has no other home.
I have the same though over and over again watching your craftsmanship, so I decided to share it with other modelers out there who I am sure will feel the same. I keep thinking that the tolerances you work to are that of model airplane making. but it is a huge wooden boat!! Everywhere one looks on that boat, the joinery, the fittings, EVERYTHING is to 0.01mm. absolutley incredible. fantastic. amazing. and this is finally one deserved subject of the very overused adjective, AWESOME.
Leo, I would love to see you and Bob Emser (The Art of Wooden Boatbuiding) have a conversation regarding wooded boat building in general. You're both excellent craftsmen with serious attention to craftsmanship and detail. You obviously have much more experience than Bob when it comes to hands-on sailing experience but I'd still enjoy hearing the two of you talking about wooden boat building in general. Maybe some day it might actually happen!
Except there are a few added wrinkles and benefits: with tubular gasket material there is no need to provide side clearance (a wider groove) to accommodate the displaced volume, and the absence of a gap prevents dirt packing in alongside the gasket. Also the hollow tube does not push so hard against the lid as a solid rod would for a similar hardness (and hence abrasion resistance) of compound, meaning you don't need so much stiffness in the lid to maintain squash force between widely spaced dogs or fasteners.
13:40 I was happy to see those cleats on the steps, the bull nose sticks out pretty far, it's rare but I've seen those snapped off. I know the cleats are for anti slip but they will also strengthen the bull nose.
I never fail to be amazed by the quality of the work of these young guys. In a world of mass-produced and built to a price, it's good to know that old skills and pride in a job well done are still alive and kicking. I would like to think that future generations freed from the drudgery of a nine-to-five routine will have the time and the resources to earn satisfaction through the work of hand and eye.
3:19 rather than CA glue, i would use rubber glue (it's the black one) from Loctite. It's specifically compounded for rubbers and similar materials and it doesn't change the structure of the material where it touches. I've used it for years to glue rubber gaskets and other similar items and it has the longest lasting bond +, as i said, it doesn't change the rubber, it still remains rubber even tho it's bonded whereas CA glue actually does affect the rubber and that surface bond becomes brittle over time, especially if it flexes. Just my 2 cents.
After I started following you i started paying attention to other Pilot / Gaff Cutters and alike Yachts on YT, both new and restored. They all are nice, fast, elegant, sure... But this boat... this is a true work of art. Every detail here got full attention. You guys put so much effort and precission to it that it never fails to amaze me. It really looks like you make if for yourself, man! No curves cut, proper job done. Respect!⛵
I continue to be completely amazed by the outstanding work being accomplished by not only you but by each of the craftspeople associated with your project. The craftsmanship is superb and no detail seems too small not to receive full attention. Thank you again for taking us along on your journey to bring this beautiful vessel back to life.
I think i can safely say that watching you and the gang ,work to such a high standard of excellence , not to mention the beautiful design and style leave me beaming with happiness. Well done Leo . You sir, and the team , are living proof that craftsmanship is not only alive but that it remains whole heartedly appreciated by all who whiteness this wonderful videos . The cutest plane!!
@@frederickstibbert7389 like clamps, you can never have too many planes.
Ok, that was a sponsor ad that was worth watching. Good job.
Wow, that Bob is a serious force.
that dramatic reenactment is truly oscar quality. comedy drama and writing who directed?
LOL, They actually corrupted Zeal into the madness! LOL Best one yet.
18:50 aww, we have a feathered visitor back with us again. :)
TALLYHO is not only very functional, but beautiful too, the attention to detail is amazing
I just love it when you get to make your sponsor's commercials! Congratulations to Surf Shark for recognizing it.
18:47 that on-tempo hammering hit the spot
Magnificent craftsmanship as always. The companionway is a work of art!
Yes, I cringed at the thought of people actually walking on those companionway steps.
Extracting Tally Ho from the shed is going to be an involved birth in its own right...... Worthy of both a Duchess of Desire send off, as well as an extra length episode.
Duchess of desire! Now there’s a show I would definitely watch! :D
The clocking of the screws on that fairlead.
Coming out of the shed! Wow....that's a real moment in the story of this boat. Launch isn't far off now.
I dont know why, but all these boat building channels help with the DoomScrolling. You guys and A2A are the best. Helps keeps the Demons of Davos out of my brain mush.
I know... not enough time. But there's a whole episode in crafting those bronze vents alone. Those have elevated the practical into pure artistry.
I second that comment!!!
What a beautiful ship Leo.
AMEN.
Bob's semi-nautilus vents are terrific.
A wooden boat is never done 😂
*Great* to see the "Duchess of Desire" making another appearance!
So exciting as Tally Ho really feels like it’s coming together and the end is in sight…
Glad to see the fire extinguisher system installed.
Sometimes Leo says nautical things and I'm happy to tilt my head like a puppy and just be happy he's saying stuff.
It's like he is Possessed by a 17th century shipwright, I am only surprised he doesn't wear that Top Hat the baby was born in as his daily hat.
I still have no idea what a lazarette is, but happy to leave it at that...
@@snowstrobe it is a compartment below decks in the stern of the vessel where all sorts of odds and ends are stored. Leo mentioned tossing fenders in there. It is pretty much a catch-all for stuff that has no other home.
@@sunny71169 also known by some as a garage!
I stopped the video and looked it up.
I have the same though over and over again watching your craftsmanship, so I decided to share it with other modelers out there who I am sure will feel the same. I keep thinking that the tolerances you work to are that of model airplane making. but it is a huge wooden boat!! Everywhere one looks on that boat, the joinery, the fittings, EVERYTHING is to 0.01mm. absolutley incredible. fantastic. amazing. and this is finally one deserved subject of the very overused adjective, AWESOME.
that engine room would make any sailor proud. It sure looks good guys.
That tiny plainer is adorable!
Love this series!! Great craftsmen's!!!
Indeed. Jewellers, the lot of them!
Every thing that this guy says about gaskets is what I learned about using O rings.
Love the little finishing touches, makes all the difference to the appearance.
The level of craftsmanship just blows my mind. She will be a ship for the ages! STUNNING!
The lazarette vents are beautiful but also ideal wasp nest attractors. Maybe some screens.
Such meticulous attention to detail, the workmanship is absolutely fantastic.
the fact you take the time to edit little things like the hammer hits in time with the music makes me extremely happy
That ship has sailed....

“Thanks for watching” Thanks for posting. A work of art.
Respect!⛵
Such beautiful joinery! And lovely to see Pancho keeping an eye on things.
surfshark ad is GOLD! thank you Leo you made my day!
I continue to be completely amazed by the outstanding work being accomplished by not only you but by each of the craftspeople associated with your project. The craftsmanship is superb and no detail seems too small not to receive full attention. Thank you again for taking us along on your journey to bring this beautiful vessel back to life.
Its fabulous watching a team of amazingly talented people building this wonderful boat....
I'm subscribed to like 150 RUclips channels. This is the ONLY ONE where I watch and enjoy the ads. Truly epic y'all. Keep up the awesome work!
It’s the little finishing touches that take the time but boy are they worth it. Great work Leo and team.
My favorite boat build 🎉
You guys are too funny 😂
Thanks Leo n Crew 👍🏻
It is a pleasure to watch top class tradesmen and women doing beautiful work on Tally Ho.
Who the hell are the people that thumbs down these videos? Amazing workmanship.
