Leo, I've had a look at pictures of Tally Ho's historical gaff rigging ( no clear, close-up detailed photos I could find). When I saw your newly installed mast with the bow-facing white "H" shaped protrusions about 3/4 of the way up, I thought: "Hey, they installed the mast backwards. Isn't that supposed to be the attachment point hardware for the main gaff-rigged sail? Shouldn't that be aft-facing?" Please explain to me how I am wrong. What is that for? Thank you.
sure there is a long way to go yet .. BUT since you started this off seeing it come back together an seeing it's main mode of movement starting to grow ... is a nice sight to see ... the end is much closer now
@@lawrenceallen8096Those "protrusions" will secure the (lower end of) the topmast. Traditionally, and I assume for very practical reasons too, the topmast sits forward of the lower mast. I watched the first few episodes & thought 'This nightmare will never float again'. How I underestimated Leo's determination, skill & perseverance. Just like 467K other subscribers, I eagerly wait for each instalment; the skill, the wit & the dedication is remarkable.
Hope your back is on the mend. What a milestone, Tally Ho looks transformed now and we get a small glimpse of what she will look like on the water. Artisan level work as always and just a joy to watch.
One thing the Acorn to Arabella folks didn't do was to explain how you actually sail something like this. I think a good episode at some point would be to walk through all the lines, winches, and other hardware and ropes, what they are called what they do and how you operate them.
The work on this boat will never be finished. The bright work alone is constant. But, that’s the way of a wooden boat. Tally Ho is one of the most beautiful boats I have ever seen. Leo, you are one amazing guy. Cheers!
Dude, as a former rigger, this video totally hit me in the feels. I remember how many customers we had to persuade to pull the mast instead of going aloft several times to replace standing rigging. Several years ago I reached out to you about the rigging and you introduced me to Ian. I was watching this with my son this afternoon and I told him that I should've been there. I'm SO happy with the progress you've made over the years. It feels like it was only yesterday that you were ripping the ribs out of the old hull. Watching the work on the spreaders really made me miss my days with Ryan Nelson at the rig shop. Some of the best years of my life.
Wonderful - true vindication for Leo. Congratulations to team Tally-Ho (the cry from the cavalry charge of sections of 5 [a tally]) and all those that have worked on her. I'm immensely proud of all the people whose vision, endurance and commitment have made this moment a reality - great skills!!
I don’t know about other seaports but port townsand has been the vortex of so many traditional craftspeople and it is a delight to see them participating in this spectacular project.
Having watched so many of these, I think the sponsors should recognize the amount of effort and creativity that Leo and crew put in. I've actually used some of the products due to their efforts!
Yet another major step in preparation for launching Tally Ho. It was wonderful to see the mast being hoisted into position and set with the rigging. Tally Ho sure looks resplendent with her gorgeous mast now in place. Thanks Leo for this episode. I have also been keep track of the Capstain project. Watching the pattern making was very interesting. Now the pattern has been sent to the casting guys.
I remember the video of you climbing aboard the rotting hulk and going below. You were able to pull rotting timbers off as if they were toothpick. What an amazing journey! You have come long way, Tally Ho is reborn and Leo it would never have happened without your vision and guts to take on such a monumental project. Congratulations to you and all those who gave thier blood sweat and tears to build her.
Man, I hope you're doing ok Leo. I injured my back when a ladder slipped off my sailbost this year as well and had to have surgery. It's horrible pain and really slows you down. Get well soon!
Having watched every episode since the beginning, who could have imagined that you and your team would actually make it. What a milestone for you all. To step the mast. You must be one the most talented project managers/shipwrights/marine historians/sailers around. I don’t know how you do it all while keeping your cool. Thank goodness that you documented it all on YT. All my thanks and admiration to you and the whole team.
Oh, Leo, with her mast mounted, Tally Ho looks like a real sailboat once again! What an important milestone, so once again congratulations to you and your team for all of the meticulous planning and effort you've put forth getting her to this stage. I especially liked how you added that drone footage towards the end, giving us a hint of where this beautiful boat will be taking you. Cheers from Canada!
Leo, I'm not ready for the boat to be finished!!! You and the team should consider a side gig as an advertising agency. The scene with Nick lying on the ground was hilarious.
She sure looks fantastic with the mast in place! These videos have started to make me feel the way you do when you're eating something so delicious that you start taking smaller and smaller bite because you don't want it to end! So I was glad when you said there is still so much to do! 😛
Those two coins are a perfect choice. I wrecked my back lifting a 400 lb wheelbarrow load of cement bags when I was your age. After that I dug out a section of my cellar, 224 wheelbarrow loads of dirt and moved them about a hundred yards each. Three years ago rebuilt the house after the biggest tree in the yard fell on it causing 8o thousand in damage. two years ago built a beautiful shed. 1 year ago put a new rubber roof on the house and this year building new stairs, cement and pressure treated wood, for my parents old house. Your back is probably telling you that your working to hard but it is hard to stop. It's in your blood to work hard as it is in mine. The bad news, your back will go out occasionally. The good news, you will still be able to work hard and have a wonderful life. I'm 75. You and everyone involved it making this project a reality are truly a class act.
Still such a classy operation. But I found it oddly satisfying to hear Leo (ultra-efficient, but still human, project manager) confess to remembering the mast hoops while lying sleepless in bed.
Leo, I knew you wouldn’t forget the coins under the mast at the mast step, but I breathed a huge sigh of relief when you placed them in just before the mast was set in. Brilliant!
This is a great day indeed. Been following since you made the keel and enjoyed seeing all the help you had getting to this point. Would be neat to see a collage of all who participated. Cheers, Lee
Wow, Tally Ho just looks extraordinary. The work you have all done on this boat is just amazing and the channel is just so interesting to watch - every week I learn something new (like the coins this week - really interesting and a great choice of coins). It's going to be so cool when it splashes and to see you all take her on her maiden voyage. Definitely one of my favorite channels on RUclips (and I am a motovlogger, lol). Don't eat Pancho!!!! lol
Pancho would be a tough old bird to eat. Here in Australia there is a resipe for cooking a Galah (a galah is a small Australian cockatoo with a gray back and rosy pink head and underparts, a real pritty bird) The Resipe: Pluck out as many fethers as you can, place the bird in boiling water allong with a stone abouut the same size as the bird. Simmer for 12 hours, tip out the water and the bird and eat the stone.
For your back pain: Run a hot bath. Put one pint of epsoms salt in the bath a🎉nd dissolve. Get in the bath ( with a clock on the side) submerge so neck and head above water. When the clock reads 45 minutes (very important 45 minutes) stand up. Your body will be translucent, having absorbed the magnesium into your skin outside in. You will then go to bed and will sleep without pain for over eight hours. When you awake your energy levels will be high and pain free. Everybody should know this little gem. Bless you Leo and all those involved.
I've been watching since you went to Georgia and it's a pleasure to see this event. I knew then you were going to finish this job but I didn't know it would take so long. It was a little like when the ballast keel was poured, one of those milestones: Getting the flitches, getting the lumber for the keel and the planks, setting up the ship saw. Even the failed attempt to pour a ballast keel turned into the best keel possible for you. Your channel is the best one on RUclips, it's smashing. The wait for the next video is always anticipated and good to see it when it gets here. We're watching what is likely to be the best built gaff cutter in history. Sans a 12 pounder crashing through the galley, Tally Ho will live another 112 years.
I'm so proud and happy. My donation paid about one day's operating cost and that was in the old days. I do feel like part of the team. Milestone, hell you can smell the sea from the deck, I've got frikken goosebumps! I may live to do shots over the bow!!! Again. ( Going forward, I will calulate the value of my donation over the whole build time. It's safe to claim I bought lunch).
Like a new car on the showroom floor - Tally Ho images when freshly finished looks great. Nice views to capture: 14:06; the entire sunset segment: 17:35 - 18:53. Looking great, Leo & crew!!
Given Port Townsend's geographic setting, looking toward water is looking generally eastward. Eastward = rising sun, so this was probably a spectacular sunrise--terrific catch by "a boatbuilder and a sailor" and a videographer.
Leo and the rest of the crew. I wish with all my heart that I could be there with you guys. Hood ass being 69 years old and unable to work I enjoy watching your videos I enjoyed every minute of it I hope to see your launch into the water Channel. I wish you blue skies fair weather.
Tally Ho has come a long way, So good to see her one step closer to get her ready to sail and fly across the open water :) thank you for sharing this journey with us.
My back is also buggered. It’s such a frustrating experience feeling helpless and hurt. When really all I want to do is help my family and work. I’m glad to have this video to watch while I lie in bed. Thanks, Leo. Hope you heal up quick.
I was one who mentioned the "coin in the mast" idea. It was not just me, for many know the heritage of such things. I see the symbolism of the coins chosen. 2000 years of history, of planting the mast, is a wonderful treat to me.
OH MY ! ! ! What a wonderful day for you all, Us too. Every thread on every line and fitting look great. Time for a celebration me thinks. Soon enough there will be the sound of wind in her sheets. Take care Leo. A back is a delicate thing. Have you considered the medallions yet ? My offer stands of course. Have a great visit back home. You are leaving your lady in excellent hands my friend.
The story of Tally Ho should be the perfect example of quality boat building for EVERY marine school and boat building apprenticeship round the world. Very well done Leo and your exceptionally talented crew

That mast looks terrific Leo & it's really great seeing it finally become part of the vessel! As a continued supporter of this amazing project, I recently sent in another donation, I would urge anyone that hasn't done so to consider donating as well! Thanks & Tally Ho! 👍👍
I'm sure Paddy would enjoy BBQ parrot much more! .... Great choices for mast coins! ... Every project consists of N parts: doing 75% of part 1, part 2, ... part N, leaving the rest until you see how the surrounding bits fit. Then doing 75% of the remainder. Then doing 75% of the remaining remainder. You wind up with tons of miniscule details that have to be fit together, in the right order, to reach 100%
Leo, remember to give your back. I have had a lot of disc issues, and pushing too hard really set me back. Amazing progress! For the engineers among us, I wish you had spent more time on the brackets hahaha!
Leo, I can only imagine the difficulty in selecting the mast coins, but the two you selected... one from when she was originally built and one for her rebuild are a perfect pair.

I never had any desire to watch a video on a boat rebuild. A buddy shared a link of the original Tally Ho when it was first being moved to the original location, where Poncho lives, forgot the name and the incredibly nice couple who let Leo use their shop. Anyway, I have been hooked ever since. I look forward to every 2 weeks when videos are posted. Congrats on setting the mast!! Can't wait until the next video and the next and the next. Thank you for taking us on this land journey towards the sea!!
Leo, I found this when You was still working alone and Tally Ho was a mess. Now: Tally Ho looks like a boat again! She WILL go to sea again! Everybody remember the lofting floor? This is why. And I love how Y´all made her come to be. The most amazing guy I remember was the White Oak saw mill. There´s so much good karma in this build.
Blast... I dunno why it never occurred to me until now Tally Ho was bound to have a RADIO! I'm an FCC licensed amateur radio operator from Tacoma whos "specialty" is in ANTENNAS! A radio maxim: "Antenna is _EVERYTHING!"_ For any water vessel the absolute best option is a 5/8 wavelength antenna which flattens the RF pattern tighter onto the horizon for much greater range, like a pancake vs a doughnut like with a typical 1/4 wave antenna. I could build you a killer antenna, but Firestik makes an amazing 5/8 wave 2m/VHF antenna for about $40!

Did anyone else spot the boat at berth at time stamp 7:14 called "Tully Ho"? Beautiful job, Leo. Get well soon.
Good catch. I couldn't read it until I switched the display resolution to the max. Now I can see it says "TOLLY HO".
Came down the comments to see it anyone else saw that. "Tolly Ho"??? That's passing off, call the lawyers!
What a transformation! Thanks again Leo for letting us be a part of this journey and congrats to you and the team on this milestone!
Having watched so many of these, I think the sponsors should recognize the amount of effort and creativity that Leo and crew put in. I've actually used some of the products due to their efforts!
You ARE a boat builder and a sailor, and an amazing and inspiring human being.
Congratulations to you and all those who gave thier blood
sweat and tears to build her.
I remember that video too, I also remember shaking my head and thinking what’s got into him but now I know
Man, I hope you're doing ok Leo.
I guess you'll be launching next summer then?
Congratulations Leo and everyone that was involved in rebuilding her!
2 years
I'm sure Leo will give his normal reply of "In two years" lol
What a good group of craftsmen and women having fun rebuilding a piece of history.
That is my favourite outdoor activity too!!😮
Ive done absolutely nothing with my life the past few years and this man has created this masterpiece. To truly be admired. Beautiful work!!!
One of the best adverts I have seen in many a year, well done Leo!
Good to see the mast set - Tally Ho!
Please take a moment and enjoy from where you have come, it has been in incredible journey. Well done Leo and crew. Cheers
Tally ho is such a beautiful boat. Gorgeous lines. I now understand why you purchased her
Those two coins are a perfect choice.
Besides all of your shipwright skills, you people make the best commercials on RUclips.
Leo, I knew you wouldn’t forget the coins under the mast at the mast step, but I breathed a huge sigh of relief when you placed them in just before the mast was set in. Brilliant!
Great to see the mast in place. She looks like a proper yacht now.
This is a great day indeed. Been following since you made the keel and enjoyed seeing all the help you had getting to this point. Would be neat to see a collage of all who participated.
Cheers,
Lee
The only channel where instead of skipping the ad... I very much look forward to one! 😂❤🎉
I lived there for three years...you are blessed.I love Australia and all the Aussies ❤❤❤
Absolutely great choice of coins to go under the mast. Great work all! Tally Ho!
sorry to hear about your back pain, I can relate all to well. I spent 10 seasons working as a carpenter there in the PNW.
Steve Cross is a unique craftsman.
The Mast and Rigging on the Tally HO!!!!!! OMG ... A massive day for the build! It is glorious!
Me imagino la alegría de todo el equipo al ver el izado del mástil y depositarlo en su lugar. Otra etapa terminada. Bravo.
Patty needs an Oscar
its Paddy, patty is the meat you put in a burger or the short for Patricia
No shirt (shit, for those having difficulty understanding)!!! 😮
Paddy for secound mate!
Patty and Pancho.
At 7:15 into the video, 'Tolly Ho?!?" An older Tollycraft yacht?
One huge step. Looking closer to a sail boat. Nice job, team!
Best part of the weekend.
Congratulations to Team Sampson! Beautiful boat. Beautiful sunset.
Leo, thank you for sharing such a long journey with us, but while you're away, please catch up on some proper rest and recovery. You look exhausted mated and we don't want you to burn yourself out
Always a pleasure to see such professional work done by great craftsmen.
Paddy in Copenhagen? I’m 40km’s from Copenhagen, I’ve been in the vicinity of a legend, without knowing it! Wish I ciuld have given him a lift, so he didn’t miss his stop.
You have already moved on to the next task on the to-do-list for a boat builder and a Captain but this had to be really EXCITING to see completed. I have been following you since the beginning and get pretty excited myself seeing Tally Ho nearing the end of the re-building process. I am starting to get excited to see her in the water and Sailing. What an amazing voyage seeing her being re-built! Thank you for the amazing, funny inspirational and educational content. You have done an AMAZING job putting each one of these videos together in telling the story of Tally Ho's rebirth. Also, what an amazing crew you have had over the years helping with the build. Each and everyone is a master in their own right as the jobs they have taken on and completed.
🎉🎉🥂 What a mile stone in the build. Huge congrats to everyone who has helped and hope your back gets better soon.
Tally Ho - the most perfect work of art ever to be launched on the open seas...and Paddy missed it! 😞😂👍
Paddy probably won't miss the launch, that will be another two years 😀
@15:00 lol I love all the different motifs of music. Throughout all the videos you always keep it spicy and different.
Haha, @ 7:13 for he's a jolly good fellow, Mr. Tolly Ho!
Love seeing Pancho you guys ;-)
Man, the shot at 12:31 really shows how elegant her shape is!
Fantastic Job Leo on the coin Honor! .... 🇺🇸We are honored to have her.. and you here! We adopted ya alooonnngg time ago.. and ya know we dont go back on our word!
Hey Leo, That scene made me cry right when you put the coins in. What a phenominal effort by the ENTIRE crew, I've been watching for over a year and a half now and love all of the episode. You are contagious and hope to see you out on the water some time.
Tolly Ho? First boat across the walk way @7:15... I'm sadined and happy to see the mast go up.....
7:02 ***selling tarps on the northwest coast is probably a good business the weather is hard on them lol
Such a momentous occasion. I love that the silver coin also represents your name, with the lion on the face.
