Who is saying: “meat = bad”?
Same people who say: “carbon = bad”.
Carbon is AWESOME, so awesome that before 10-12,000 years ago, carbon was so low that we carbon-based lifeforms (from humans to phytoplankton, and every whale, tree, blade of grass, monkey…etc, in between) barely had an environment to eek out a survival existence.
BUT THEN, carbon bloomed and along with it vegetation and the whole food chain didn’t bloom but exploded.
Those pushing the “NO MEAT”…and “NO CARBON”/“NO CARS…or heat or water, etc,…those people hate people. At the top is the old Rome elite and these hypocrites will stuff their faces with a a thick juicy steak, in the back of their limos, heading to their private jets,…and demand We the Plebs eat-ze-bugz.
I say we feed the elite to the bugs and we share earth.

Urolithin A is $100 per 60 softgels @ 500mg.....and the recommendation is 1000mg? I am starting to get the feeling that supplement companies are no better than the big pharma corporations these days. Such a shame.

Urolithin A (UA) is not directly found in food sources, but rather arises from the breakdown of ellagitannins and ellagic acid by gut bacteria. Therefore, foods rich in these precursors are your key to boosting UA production in your body. Here are some top picks:
      **Fruits:**
      * **Pomegranates:** The crown jewel of UA precursors, rich in ellagitannins like punicalagin.
      * **Berries:** Strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, and cloudberries are all good sources of ellagitannins.
      * **Other fruits:** Mangoes, pineapples, and grapes also contain some ellagitannins.
      **Nuts and seeds:**
      * **Walnuts:** A great source of ellagitannins, especially when eaten with their skin.
      * **Pistachios:** Another good source of ellagitannins, alongside other beneficial nutrients.
      * **Pecans and almonds:** While lower in ellagitannins, they still contribute to your daily intake.
      **Other sources:**
      * **Oak-aged wines and spirits:** The aging process extracts ellagitannins from the oak barrels.
      * **Teas:** Green and black teas contain some ellagitannins, though less than other sources.
      * The conversion of ellagitannins to UA depends on your individual gut microbiome. Some people naturally produce more UA than others.
      * Combining these foods with prebiotics like dietary fiber or fermented foods can enhance the breakdown of ellagitannins and increase UA production.
      * Eating a balanced diet and maintaining a healthy gut environment are crucial for optimal UA production.

Things to note about Dr. Gabrielle Lyons's lifestyle/diet/professional opinions:
She eats within 2 hours of waking up
She packs things such as "Beef sticks" and kefir for her kids' snacks
She doesn't believe that OMAD is ideal long term, particularly as you get older.
She doesn't have a sweet tooth (Indulgence foods are things like keto gummies)
She does 3 days of heavy lifting per week (one day of some sort of sprinting exercise)
She recommends that everyone do 3 days of resistance training per week
She suggests that your 1st & last meals are the most important for protein synthesis (30 to 50g of protein per meal)

The majority of those young men were unfit for war because that cohort was affected by the deprivation of Great Depression. My Dad was born in 1923, a mere 5 yrs after their fathers were in WWI. When he started college, Go Buckeyes!, a yr or two before he was drafted, he was 5.3"! He remembered having meat in his family home at Christmas......just Christmas. He grew 6" in height at 20 yrs old that first year getting adequate calories AND protein at school. If you've read The Boys In The Boat, one of the things that becomes obvious is those young men were HUNGRY and by being on the crew team, they were fed enough to fuel that level of training.

So out of curiosity...I loosely practice I.F. and eat after I work out in the morning. My "first" meal of the day is around 2pm...the meal consists if about 70 grams of protein in that meal ( stir fry and lean protein and a protein shake). I then have a meal around 6 and have another 30 grams from whole food only...I have dropped weight (65lbs +) I have dropped body fat from 35% to about 13%, and put on about 14 lbs of muscle. I am also pushing 60 and have a V02 max of 47.
I would really like for someone to stop talking about do's and don't (s) and start talking about how to assess one's health.
I feel great despite not following guidelines on protein intake for my weight, exercising while fasting ( another don't do apparently) and allowing cheat days occasionally.
So how about helping people assess where they are metabolically and start from there.

I've been gifted (my request) Dr. Lyons book for Mother's Day yay! I love this and this information especially since I work with menopausal women to overcome emotional eating and have been sharing her book for good reason. Most of the women I have helped transform their mindset around food and gaining food freedom, haven't even come close to the protein needed. It's all so confusing even for me that loves clinical studies but for me, I stopped dieting 4 years ago and dropped all my weight, those extra #30 lbs during menopause. Being a Rapid Transformational Therapy Practitioner & Clinical Hypnotherapist, I wanted these menopausal women to transform their eating behaviors so my ultimate goal is these beautiful mothers influence their own children and especially daughters to never diet again and actually eat properly, (wouldn't that be a world transformation) and have that healthy relationship with food. Amazing how many of us don't have that healthy relationship with food (but can quickly be changed) and my clients absolutely gain that healthy relationship and report time and time again, how GREAT it feels to no longer be controlled by food cravings, food itself. Thank you for this, so interesting!

In 1968 at 18 and at the height of the Vietnam war, I was trying to eat right, and I read in the news and heard on the TV news, that doctors treating wounded soldiers in the battlefield were pulling strands of cholesterol out of the arteries of 18 and 19-year-olds. The doctors said they were shocked to see such a buildup in these young soldiers. They said it was due to all the saturated fats these young soldiers had been eating. So, the word was stop eating saturated fats. This was before your time so you may not have heard about this. Any comment on this?

Your body doesn't just turn Cholesterol into more Cholesterol, it's quite complex. @@Beatrice-nx5ld- is why Gabrielle Lyon recommends lean steaks. Regarding the young soldiers / arteries beginning to block… Recommend input from the following professionals:
      Prof Tim Noakes PhD
“Ketogenic: The Science of Therapeutic Carbohydrate Restriction in Human Health”
      Prof Jeff Volek PhD
      “Ketogenic Diet and Human Performance”.
For example prof Noakes was a high level athlete in his younger days (marathon running and triathlon).
He says the accepted wisdom of the day heavy carbo-loading before the races.
What happened over time was this:
Every time you eat carbohydrates/sugar - the blood-glucose spikes up (some of the fructose goes straight to the liver to deal with) - insulin spikes up to bring the blood-glucose down.
If you repeat this in eg 1.5h-2h intervals (because you then had a glucose slump),
over time cells become Insulin-resistant, blood-glucose stays high and the body pumps out even more insulin to try bring that blood-glucose level down.
In the athletes’ 30’s or 40’s the above system still copes keeping the lid on glucose level, despite the often hidden problem that nevertheless the system is becoming more and more insulin resistant: so your blood-work’s glucose could be within range, but crucially insulin-resistance is in progress (and few check the insulin levels).
The young soldiers (eg Vietnam) already had long years of drinking Coca-Cola, sweet pop-corn, smoking etc etc - so were well on the way to being insulin resistant.
***Insulin (and undiagnosed elevated mean levels of it) control many, many body functions including deposition of fat (inc LDL bad cholesterol deposition in arteries).
Thus prof Noakes, in his later years did a 180deg: he now recommends keto/ketovore way of eating, keeping the carbohydrates/sugar as low as possible - esp first few months.
After the initial few months on keto/ketovore you begin to be properly “fat-adapted” ie the body has learned to use ketones (produced by your liver) / your own fat + still can use carbohydrates as fuel when these are presented: you can burn both the ketones and the glucose, you are metabolically healthy.

In my research it depends upon any pre existing conditions that you may need to address and what your goals are. Chronic Diseases are the #1 cause of death in the USA - not a lack of muscle, although maintaining it is very important. If your goal is longevity then a plant forward diet has the most credible and long term studied and observed diet through the Blue Zones. Some people call it the Mediterranean Diet which allows small amounts of animal protein but primarily plant based. Sorry, but I think this podcast has a lot of spin to support bias. Just my opinion.

@artbykristylalonde4165 lately I’ve been able to find lactose-free versions of almost everything. Fairlife has lactose free milk and yogurt. They also filter their products to make them higher in protein and have less sugar so that’s a bonus! Also, good culture has a lactose-free cottage cheese that’s amazing but hard to find in stores in my area. The lactaid brand also has a cottage cheese that is easier to find in stores. Breyers has lactose free, vanilla ice cream that tastes exactly the same

This is very interesting, but I’m not sure the optimum amounts (1.2g - 1.6g per kg of bodyweight) have been correctly converted to the quoted imperial units (0.7g - 1.0g per lb of bodyweight).
    Take a 200lb (91kg) individual:
    91 x 1.6 = 145g
    200 x 1.0 = 200g?
It looks like the maximum in imperial units should be around 0.7g per lb (200 x 0.7 = 140)

I have worked with many elderly people and the biggest complaint I get from elderly about doctors is not that they are told to move more but the fact that they are too old and this is a natural thing for them to be sick. They do not get advice to move more, or strengthening muscles, nutrition, none of that. Or at least many of the elderly that I have known. It is a huge issue. Animal products are very expensive and most of the elderly I know also can't afford to purchase animal protein and often are dependent on food commodities (processed foods) and low protein meals from local senior centers.

One problem ( certainly in the UK) is the GPs spend very little time during their training studying nutrition. There are some very generalised gudelines, a lot of which are outdated. If people prioritized eating a healthy diet and doing the right type of exercise ( for them) then chronic disease would be cut massively. But big pharma is a mainstay of the UKs economy. As it is in the US. Until the general population takes responsibility for their own health rather than relying on getting "a pill for every ill" then chronic disease will continue to ravage us.

BUT THEN, carbon bloomed and along with it vegetation and the whole food chain didn’t bloom but exploded.

If you go by 1gram of protein per goal weight, you’re looking at about 140 grams per day.
Divide it into three meals, and you have about 45 grams of protein per meal. That’s about a half pound of 88/12 ground beef, about seven ounces of chicken, or 6.5 oz can of albocore tuna in water.
It took me a couple of months to become accustomed to eating so much protein, so be patient with yourself.
