Letterman generally likes playing along with avant garde acts to fool/mess with his audience. His previous work with Kauffman for example. Glover plays a character whenever he's on letterman's show in order to get a reaction... He also really likes messing with movie corporations who expect actors to go out and promote films with witty banter or relaying little anicdotes. I really like how Conan does a more respectful interview with him, than David Letterman. Though Letterman was almost always a douche to people he just didnt like, or understand. He would purposefully have guests brought in for the sole purpose of berating them. I do know now though, that Crispin was actually playing Dave, not the other way around. Dave was the dumb fuck in those episodes lol
Conan really did a fantastic job here, great interview! Unlike other hosts (famously Letterman in the '80s and '90s, and later also Kimmel) Conan clearly understands that Crispin Glover had previously shown up to Late Night 'in character' to promote his work rather than himself. To accommodate this, the segment starts with the promotional movie clip that is normally shown at then end, and the entire first half of the interview is a genuine conversation about the movie. Around the halfway mark (3:50) Conan then 'calls out' Crispin Glover for dressing exactly like his character in the movie, even straight up asking "what's going on here...?", while also making it clear that he appreciates the effort. Crispin Glover then seems to drop all remaining traces of his 'Willard' character for the remainder of the interview, in which he talks about a few odd artifacts of bygone popular culture that he owns.
Crispin Glover is a method actor of old school tradition as well as a performance artist. Dave didn't understand that he basically showed up "in-character" very much in the light of Andy Kaufman before him and actors such as Jim Carrey (MTV Movie Awards, I believe) and others. Unfortunately, the issues he had with Back to the Future 2, and them refusing to cast him in the role because he wanted a pay increase, and then the production team subsequently using a makeup mold of his face and having another actor wear it burned a few bridges. BUT to Crispin's credit, the Screen Actor's Guild made it a rule to never be able to use the likeness of an individual without said individual's explicit consent. The weird interviews in a pre-internet era (at least as we know it today) the eccentric behaviors he projected, and his arguments with the producers and director's of Back to the Future made most industry executives believe he was either A, extremely eccentric and on drugs, or B, extremely opinionated, difficult to work with, and a potential drug addict as well. Crispin's a legend and his moves were deliberate. It's just a shame that Dave, who's usually great at playing along (minus the interviews with Joaquin Phoenix), basically shat on Crispin multiple times. Thing is, for as hard as Dave was being on Crispin, in his awesome way, he was giving it back 10 fold. Dude's a legend.
+Begley's Shizzle Well said. But Glover's argument with the "Back to the Future" franchise is really important, even more important in this age of digital reproduction. What they did with prosthetics is now possible with digital images. The last "Fast and Furious" brings back Paul Walker with his family's blessing, but who knows? Should an actor have rights to her/his image for films? It's a serious issue. Glover is a brilliant actor. Not a bad thing to give use of an actor's image to the actor. What if producers started swapping computer bodies like avatars?
+Begley's Shizzle Whereas you understood it because you read Wikipedia and believed it. The problem with that theory is that Glover always plays the same "character" in every movie in which he appears. Notice how deftly Conan scarcely allows Glover to speak here.
Herbert Wells Or perhaps because I was old enough to be around and watch all of it unfold as it did in real time over the course of the 80s and early 90s. As for Glover's nuances, they are open to interpretation and the eye of the viewer. You're entitled to your opinion, Herbert.

I saw Willard on cable recently. I thought Crispin Glover did a great job playing the character. He added a dark, creepy side that the original actor, Bruce Davidson just didn't. Glover really pulled it off brilliantly.

Crispin Glover is a great actor and really nice guy. He also is considered a genius with an IQ of 160. He attended the Mirman school for the gifted in California from K to 8th grade. They don't accept children with IQs of less than 138. His father was character actor Bruce Glover. He played the assassin Mr. Wint in the Bond film Diamonds Are Forever.
That's what makes Crispin a man. He is delighted to wear these good looking suits everytime he gets interviewed and he doesn't get tired of wearing them.

We don't need a movie with Crispin as the Joker. You just saw it.
Crispin Glover Private Collection - Mortician Chic
i hope everyone in these comments has seen rivers edge
He’s so freaking perfect 🔥
I LOVE Crispin Glover!! I want to MARRY him!!!
It's great how the band plays the ever-so-appropriate "Aladdin Sane" for Crispin's intro.
My man ❤ Always love You.
This was a good interview! I'm glad Crispin used to troll Letterman every time he was on his show because he was a pompous douche and Crispin knew it! Conan in my opinion is a better interviewer than Letterman for sure! It also cracks me up how SO many people in the comments for Letterman's interview, think that Crispin is being himself! Lol! He's an actor! Smh!
yes, he's so memorable, no matter what role he does, and no matter how small.
Wint in the Bond film Diamonds Are Forever.
he actually looks very handsome the way he looks in this interview. did letterman ever have him back on since the incident in 1987?
He would have made a brilliant Joker
I've been saying this for years
That's what makes Crispin a man. He is delighted to wear these good looking suits everytime he gets interviewed and he doesn't get tired of wearing them.
I.
I fucking LOVE Crispin. No homo.
He is REALLY a talent that has been lost to many. Such an awesome dude.
This guy never ages !!!
Cool intro with Bowie's Aladdin Sane. Crispin and Conan are class acts! We need more people like this !!!!
Conan is clearly on his game and this is how it’s done . Terrific guest and appearance. Conan completely in control and masterful at his craft .
The band played Aladdin Sane. Haha.
hi! oh thank you so very much! :) what a coincidence i mentioned 'little noises' then. even in a 'normal' role, crispy's fascinating strangeness bleeds through--he still put his mark on it. :) rem. when he was chanting 'marty marty marty' looking for the kid? stuff like that. :) and how wild eyed and desperate he looked, in mathias' office. rik mayall looked so different! :) i love crispy so much. :) thanks again for watching my vid! tc!
Conan was such respectful and brilliant interviewer and host. Jimmy Fallon is the best host since him. Very nice man and truly funny. 😄
The perfect Willard, as I can somewhat relate. My sister watched it with me after I already had. We were both in our mid 30s, and she actually screamed when the elevator door opened-- one of the most terrifying images ever on screen.
Excellent interview! Instead of exploiting Crispin Glover's eccentricity for comedy....Conan actually brings it out in conversation to make a very interesting...and still funny interview.
Much love much respect...
Conan was the most respectful host with Crispin and Crispin responded to his attitude.
Crispin is one of those really cool eccentrics. He is very talented too. Willard is one of my favorite movies he starred in. Its actually really good.
Also have to say how awesome Conan is. I think everybody knows that though =P
classic been watching his interviews since the 80's
Conan is a great interviewer, he got Crispin Glover to have a normal conversation.
He looks like he just left the set of Charlie's Angels. Awesome guy
He belongs to fashion magazine, so handsome as a model too
