It is now eleven years since a Spaniard last won the Pichichi trophy, the award for finishing a LaLiga season as the competition’s top-scorer. The Cristiano Ronaldo/Lionel Messi duopoly has harvested
eight of those, with Uruguayans Diego Forlan and Luis Suarez collecting the other two.
You have to go back to 2008 to find a native winner: Mallorca’s Dani Guiza.

For a long time Guiza had become synonymous with "missing" here in Turkey. When playing among ourselves, whenever someone missed a goal we'd yell "GUIZAAAAAA"at him.
Saying that he was successful at Turkey and continuing to the video was probably a little bit mis-informative. Guiza came here as a record transfer for Fenerbahce (for 14 million euros) and he missed so many sitters that he basically turned into a meme. I still think that he was okay in the 2 seasons he played regularly (08-09, 09-10) (even though he was missing many many chances he was great at finding them) and in the season he rarely played he brought Fenerbahce the championship with that goal where he came as a substitute against Bucaspor in 10-11. He was a very emotional player and after the goal he scored against Bucaspor he cried due to what he has gone through in the last 2-3 seasons with Fener. (missing many goals, turning into a meme, demoted to being the 3rd striker of the team)

Another great video. I love this channel. I'm Spanish and I didn't know Guiza's background before Getafe. He was a good player and got his moment. La Liga's top scorer and European Champion with Spain. He came on from the humble football, not raise in a "glamorous" academy. A special player. Thanks for all Dani Güiza

The first Great meme in Turkish Football
The stats for Guiza's time in Turkey lie very much. On paper it might look good but as others have noted his constant misses turned him into a meme legend.
There was a recent picture of Guiza buying groceries to spend the lockdown and the trolley was full of beer. Everybody was like 'Guiza represents me'
Have you seen all the goals he couldn't score at Fenerbahce? I don't blame him though. Guiza was a natural poacher and he was quite deadly when he found pockets of space. However, Fenerbahce centred their their team around Alex, who was the classic enganche. And it didn't quite work well. On top of that, Aragones was the manager of Fenerbahce back in 2009. I guess he had a bit of affection towards Guiza.
In Türkiye he was a joke of frequent missing. Wow, but in Euro 2008... I still love this man.

Here in Spain he is remembered as a meme as well. He was the man that scored a brace against Barcelona in the historic 2007 Spanish Cup comeback (Getafe lost 5-2 in the first match, when Messi scored the famous Maradona-like goal, then won 4-0 in the second match, heading to the final for the first time in History) and he was the man that didn't touch the ball once in said final. His mentality was so fragile...he kept his spot in the National Team until 2009 Confecup -where he scored an amazing/accidental goal in the Bronze Medal match, but after that, he disappeared. The influence of Nuria Bermúdez is important too, but not in a healthy way. She is a woman that made herself a name in Spain by appearing in several reality shows/"garbage TV" and constantly claiming to be the lover to a number of famous footballers...I remember one time, in 2008-2009, in which Spain was about to play against Turkey, and he ran away from the hotel back to Spain because apparently there was a scandal going on between him and Bermúdez. He went absolutely missing for a couple of days and gave no official explanation. The spanish press critisized him a lot and asked for him to be removed from the team...until he gave Villa the assist to a 89th minute late victory goal against Turkey, two days later. I remember a spanish Sports newspaper claiming in their frontpage at the next day, "DANI, SLEEP WITH WHOEVER YOU WANT".
And if you can speak spanish and watch an interview of him it's amazing. It's as if he was constantly stoned or something.

Not saying the video is bad. Guiza's story and his antics especially make a great story. But info about one of the top 4 European leagues top scorer isn't exactly hidden information. His antics are well known to anybody who was following La Liga back then.
One of my favorite parts of a tifo video is the 10 seconds or so at the end of the video, when you get to enjoy the beautiful underlying melody as the video ends.
Still remember when Spain won the Euro 2008. He's suddenly disappear after that..

I remember when he came to Cerro Porteño he even scored against Boca Juniors...these stats remind me of the Mexican League Top scorers with the huge amount of foreign players especially attackers. The last Mexican Top Scorer was Angel Reyna in the 2011 Clausura. Since then there hasnt been anyone as close , Victor Guzman scored 9 in the Apertura 2018 but was still 5 away from the winner Gignac (14 Gs)

Guiza once play for my hometown team Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) in Malaysia ... lethal player on the field and the team look foward to learn from him. But off the field is a different story ...

Anthony Suarez I'm not too old(19) but when I was playing in streets with my friends we were chanting his name (Guiza) whenever someone misses a sitter but my cousin (12) barely remembers him and of course we have another footballers for memes in our league (When Guiza came to Turkish League, I was 9-10 years old)

he was terrible in Fenerbahce but his statistics were good and scored some time to time. However, he was so terrible that among Turkish fans the expression of "being Guiza" arose everytime some one missed a goal. Even though he is too bad, he is not definitely the worse striker of Fenerbahce in the last 10 years (Bienvenu, Fernandao, Slimani etc.

The name of the RCD Mallorca manager is Gregorio MaNzano, not Mazano. He is a classic manager for mid table and modest teams in La Liga. He's managed teams like Malaga, Valladolid, Racing Santander, Rayo Vallecano... and even Atlético (in 2 different spells) and Sevilla. Most notably he's known for managing RCD Mallorca in three different spells and leading them to some of their biggest success as a club, like their 2003 Copa del Rey win (with a certain young talent by the name of Samuel Eto'o as one of their stars), which included a 4-0 win at home against Real Madrid (global 5-1) in quarterfinals, another historic 1-5 win against Real in the Bernabeu in La Liga 02/03 and qualifying for Europa League in 09/10, having finished 5th in La Liga.

Fenerbahçe fans hated him, most of the time. His lack of clinical finishing, extreme lack of luck, insane misses and people's high expectations caused him to be an unimpressive forward.
Playing striker in Turkey is harsh, when you think about it, he scored about 15 goals in each season, but that team was really efficient in the upfront and Guiza lacked clinical abilities to utilize the potential.
When a Süper League newcomer forward struggles to finish chances, the first thing people will say is 'This guy's kinda like Guiza, talented but can't finish that much'

We used to play football at the streets and When one of us missed a goal we would shout "Guiza misses again" and call the player as Guiza for the rest of the game. I've myself called that way many times.

Didn't know about this guy. I guess La Liga has had such prominent strikers from all around the world that you end up bypassing the names of the local talents. I'm also surprised that guys like Llorente or Torres have never been top scorers of La Liga, they are top top class, and I'm sure there's more.
