- I picked up a rare Game Boy Light from Japan. It's got a bad screen with a burned polarizer. I show you how to replace the polarizer and get this working properly again.

Thanks for watching
It's an electro-luminescent panel like those used in old Timex indi-glo watches.
Cool, good to know
I was thinking that after seeing the panel on by itself
@@RetroRepairs The board also labels the pads as EL and if you look one of them goes to the metal square right in the middle labeled T1, Transformer. EL panels usually require about 100v AC so they are high powered little things. When I saw you putting you fingers on there I was ready to see you get shocked.
those where the good ol days.
nice quarantine stache bro
dunno if anyone gives a shit but if you're bored like me during the covid times then you can stream pretty much all the new movies on instaflixxer. Have been streaming with my gf lately :)
@Maximus Westley Yea, I've been using InstaFlixxer for years myself :)
I'm pretty sure that polarizer should've be glued on the glass screen and not the way you did it.
Exactly my thoughts too. Screen looks fainter than before. Love his vids though
Hey RR can you fix my Gameboy Advance Cartridges, I have the batteries but my soldering techniques are horrible
Just looking at that screen and imagine what the sun could do to your skin. Crazy.
A bit of acetone with it and it may be more effective against the goo.
So rare! I remember seeing ONE, In my life. Some kid had it in my middle school, instant cool factor😁 no better way to form a crowd of nerds
I sincerely doubt anyone in your middle school had a gb light. These were Japanese exclusive and with 1998 internet you couldn't easily import one online.
Doubt all you want, I have seen one. I don't know the story on how he got it, but we all wanted it! He was also the dude who always had pocket monster cards to trade.
Haha That swallow sound 14:42 so much focus, holding your breath. And then success! Layer separation complete :)
what's going on Adam, where's the videos?
Sheeeeet, I'm happy i got mine for $70 AUD back when i did.
These cost a fortune now, if you can even find one!
The glue might be in the ballpark of acrylate (super glue) or an acrylic epoxy..
If so, acetone is probably the solvent to try. But you have to be careful to make sure it doesn't get on anything else, especially plastic.
Would it have been easier to use Goo Gone instead of the IPA? Or is there a reason not to use it in repairs?
You could try hydro-dipping the shell. It’s way more durable than paint and I believe pretty cheap to do these days. Should cover up those scratches as well :)
Liked within 1 second. Love this stuff, so helpful when I'm fixing my own bits
Yh I saw after I got back from over seas 99% alcohol is like $15+ yet I got mine for $6 in December.
I bought the MG Chemicals large spray can for $15 on Amazon. Apparently the spray bottles last way way way longer than normal IPA bottle.
I just want to ask how to find old broken handhelds and cartridges. I’ve looked around a lot and haven’t been able to find anything broken online, do you guys have any tips?
I usually just search "video games not working" on ebay and some stuff comes up, mostly discs, but if you look hard enough you can find cartridges.
gotta love that Indi-glo!
Could you use goo gone to remove the residue?
Greetings from Brazil! I'm glad to see a new video from you. I was worried because of the pandemic, man.
Waiting for part 2! All the best!
Heptane will take the adhesive off WAY better than IPA. It causes the adhesive to lose tack, rather than dissolve. Safe to use on electronics. Makes you light headed if you breathe it in though. Might not work all that well with the optical lens glue.
Are there any 3rd-party shells for Game Boy Light? I feel like something with its color molded into the plastic would fare better in terms of wear & tear compared to dealing with scratched paint of the original.
I've never seen them. They're uncommon enough there's probably little demand.
As of June 2022, there are now replacement shells available from Ali. They are apparently really good quality.
As far as I know there are the clear and clear yellow versions available but not yet the gold/silver.
@@Martin_Edmondson Thanks for the heads up!
Been watching your videos for a long time, they are so relaxing. Always thought the Game Boy Light was so cool, can't wait for part 2.
Do you think a lower percentage alcohol would have let water and alcohol soak into the residue deeper? I know 99% is usually better in electronics because it evaporates quicker, but this looks like a situation where you'd actually want it to stick around a bit longer and soak in.
Great video like always! I really love the way you explain things. Can’t wait for part 2 and more new videos.
Welcome back! Had me nervous with that blade for a while. Probably would be more difficult to do these kinds of repairs with a chunk missing from one of your fingers.
The board is interesting, looking like a mashup between the DMG and Color
It's basically a gameboy pocket board with i guess the extra circuit for the backlight
That would explain it!
That screen clean-up looked real sketchy at first. Good thing it turned out ok.
Please help. How can I fix the dead pixels/“screen cancer” on my gameboy light?
Wow i never knew the light took double A's. You learn somethin new everyday i guess.. hah
I have the same model with the same problem, except mine is all silver but the stain is much bigger
will you do a part 2?
My Gameboy pocket still had a nasty black circle in the middle after taking the polarizer off
Goo gone might work better to remove that adhesive. Just have to spray it down with alcohol to clean that off when finished.
agreed leave some goo gone on for a while on and it'd be a breeze from there
The problem with stuff like Goo Gone and Naphtha is the high likelihood it would start to eat away at the adhesives holding the glass together.
And acetone is purely the most wrong choice one could make to clean anything around plastics.
Cool a gamr boy light!!@!
Having my coffee and enjoying the fixing
I feel you. Have been absent lately too. Even right now when Im writing this Im actually in a company, trying to keep the business up.
I guess thats life. But its good to see you ! I have to catch up with older episodes I missed
I wonder what wd40 would have done to that layer...
Just like with people, if at first it doesn't budge, more alcohol!
Also people, stop buying IPA. Support your local liquor store.
Long time no see!
This guy sounds like Michael Biehn.
If you had 3 filters you could have shown the "polarization paradox". It's a quantum physics rabbit hole :). Look it up and get mind blown.
Is anyone producing GBL EL panels?
I swear i had agameboy light when I was like 9 back on the early 90s. I saw it. My mom is from Queens NYC so when we visted family every year for xmas we would get gifts. I got a GB light to replace my OG GB. Didnt know it wasnt in America. I remember be amazed by the backlight. I about a year or so later the GB SP came out that had a flip sceen.
What a burn
please dont paint it. painted plastic is shitty.
The green tint on the screen is kinda neat.
Anyone know how to fix a plastic screw hole that’s stripped? Metal screw just just spins for eternity.
Idk, but for me when you said that you were gonna repaint it, it broke my heart, poor Gameboy Light Gold :'(
So would a blow dryer help remove the existing polarizer? So as to skip the sticky gunk?
You got lucky I ruined three or four of these trying to do this and a back lite mod, will probably have to get those new screens someone is working on
what is that component between D-Pad and A/B buttons ? (82Y7 written on it)
That stuff doesn't like to come off at all! A lot of elbow grease and ipa and it comes off eventually.
Welcome Back! Been missing your repair videos! Cheers! Stay safe!
a good protective glove can give you a peace of mind :) love your videos by the way.
I think the adhesive is LOCA, or liquid optically clear adhesive. I'm glad to k ow you can scrap it with a blade, I've done with a q tip and it's hell. Next one I do, I'm going to try using hepstane as the adhesive removed instead of IPA. Let's hope it makes it easier 🙏
That's it. I've used it on a gbc frontlight mod, but couldn't remember what it was called
How do you find these deals ?
I wonder how someone was dumb enough to press the tip of their soldering iron on the screen
It's not a burn from a soldering iron. I'm not sure exactly what causes it, but could be sunlight or heat warping the filter. It's extremely common with early handhelds
LOL the face has been revealed!
electroluminus
Funny I was wondering what happened to your videos as their was not one for weeks
Sad the Game Boy Litght didn't make it out of Japan..
Him peeling that made me think of the Galaxy Fold
I would like to see you paint it on a next video. Awesome job!
I impressed by your work and you got a sub from me❤️
Can you mod the Power Switch to enable you to play Game Boy Games?
A Blacklit button mod??
I don't follow what you're asking? This only plays game boy games, it won't play color games. It's essentially a game boy pocket revision
@@RetroRepairs Oh, I should have clarified my question.
In the states they go out and about,
But in Canada we go oat in a boat
Anyone here know? If I ever needed to fix my gameboy light screen, is there a way to get that original grey tint and not the dmg green?
Im pretty sure you are supposed to use the other kind of polarizing film. I think it’s called circular. There’s a thread about this on reddit. Dmg uses the one used in this video but gbp, gbl and gbc, apparently used a circular polarizing film.
Where are you?
The residue is always such a pain to remove
In germany there was also Gameboy light
I don't understand how your discount code works at HHL. I click the link and it just takes me to the site, it doesn't take any percentage off my cart...
Hmmm, it should when you go to checkout, but as it's a referral link it may only apply to new sign ups possibly?
@@RetroRepairs Yes that was why, new accounts only. I figured it out. Thanks.
Would a little warmth have helped?
Pulling a game boy game out of a DS case is a nice touch.
I case up all my games, gba ones actually fit properly but i kind of just throw the gb ones in. It still closes.
Nice
WD-40 works better with adhesive
Maybe, but I'd never use it on a display. I wouldnt want to risk separating the adhesive holding the glass layers together. Rather put in a bit extra work that take the quick route and potentially ruin it
kk
Alright pal, you doing well??
Can't complain, just had been doing two home renos while home from work so really haven't had time to get into these videos lately
@@RetroRepairs ah okay, good to hear, I mean I can't seem to get rid of those pokemon games, no one wants them, shame you ain't in the UK pal
Its been a while
👍👍
Too long
