Game Boy Advance IPS Backlight V2 Centered Installation - Fixing Ebay Junk - Backlit Display

- Опубликовано: 15 окт 2024
- I recently picked up a Game Boy Advance, and decided to do a screen mod to it. Normally, when you install the IPS display, it does not sit centred, and as a result, the bottom and right edges are cut off. Here I try and center the installation to lose as little display as possible, so I can keep using OEM screen lenses.

I just finished modding my GBA with this screen tonight and my gosh, I couldn't have done it without your video. Thank you so much Adam for making videos like these. You and another RUclipsr inspired me to learn how to solder and put this screen in my own Game Boy. Mine isn't perfect but it's completely playable with adjustable brightness. Keep it up man, your channel rocks! Thanks again.
"A few little scratches" Lol. Not what i would call it.
FYI: There absolutely is a lens protector on the lens, it's just very hard to see and peel off. I made the same mistake once.
I literally just did this exact mod yesterday. I really wish this video had been posted a day earlier...
Plenty of other people have vids of this mod xD
Clean power switch
Haha same here man! Bought this mod a week ago. Got it from eBay for around the same price but it includes a replacement front shell that has already been milled out to accept the new lcd.
@@KevinArcade87 Really? I can only find 3 including this one that shows how to install v2. Could you link me to good ones you have found. This is by far the best i've seen so far!
It’s great to see you getting a sponsor. Really enjoy your content and got me into some repairing old consoles as well, so cheers!
Less of a tutorial, more or an in-depth lesson from an experienced teacher. The best explanation of this process I've seen so far.
Thank you RetroRepairs for showing that video to us. You helped me out through younr video with my Gameboy Advance. I couldn't figure out the mistake why my IPS V2 screen would only stay black with the sound on. Then I tried to recreate how you've done it and now my Gameboy works with a bright screen. 👍😊👍
5:48 The smudged scratchy front lens is removed to be replaced by a glass one. 12:28 The smudged scratchy front lens magically reappears.
Did you watch the whole video? He put it back to test it and later replaced it.
That’s awesome I bought one of these screens mods last week. Still waiting for it to arrive. Now I got a nice instructional video to follow when it gets here haha. Idk if you care but normally a good idea to sharpie out your address for videos. 😬
I once ordered a frontlight mod for my GBA, but I didn't get any LOCA glue with it, which I soon found out was a mistake. But by the time I got any LOCA glue, my GBA had some dead pixels on the screen, so I decided to just get one of these, since they had recently come out (with the V1). I didn't have the money to get one, so when they were sold out, I thought I had missed my chance. Luckily, the reason they had sold out was because they had a better V2 ribbon on the way that fixed the screen tearing. I got that, and I absolutely love it!
All good things to those who wait, I guess.
I feel bad for those who rushed and got the V1. I held back specifically because of the screen tearing as I absolutely can't stand that kind of stuff. Now not only do I have a GBA with a V2 but I also have 2 SP with it as well. It's even easier to install on the SP as you only need to solder 1 cable that allow brightness control directly with the SP's brightness button.
Thank god you did the GB DMG-01 backlight + bivert mod. I will be doing that sooner or later. :V
Thank you so much for making this guide! All the other screen mods had them putting them in aftermarket shells with larger screen cut-outs but I plan on doing this to an authentic spice orange shell I purchased off of ebay, so I wasn't quite sure how to make the larger IPS screen fit without cutting away at the plastic border. Which I really didn't want to do for the same reason as you, basically fear of doing an unappealing hackjob on the original casing. I'll definitely keep this video saved for when my materials arrive and it's time for me to mod!
I just did this mod last week. It really is amazing how crisp everything looks.
I took some up close pictures comparing my 101 modded GBA and my IPS modded one. On the 101 you can see the pixel grids. It's like looking at the image through a screen door. For the IPS screen it's still there but each pixel of the image takes 4 pixel of the IPS screen. The grid is so tiny that it's almost impossible to see. It makes everything look so sharp.
You made this wayyyy harder than it needed to be.
Jimmy Dean I don’t see your video on this.

@@danpell985 Agreed. Can't stand the online expert commentators that don't even provide any helpful feedback themselves.
The lag on the brightness switch could be due to the two soldering pads touching on the ribbon cable connector
I was thinking they looked like they were connecting lol
Just about to mod my old gameboy advance, I've watched a LOT of videos on how to do it and this is the best I've seen. Thank you :)
The deckle is a muscle that connects the flat of the brisket to the rib cage. I didn’t see any meat in the making of this video. 🤣
Maybe he was looking for the word decal 😂 that’s great !!!
The edited-in portion showing you installed the spacer wrong was abit confusing when it jump back and fourth in time. At the final assembly end of the video it was still/again in the wrong place, so assume you noticed later and recorded the edited portion and spliced it in. Would have benefitted from a annotation (both at the edit portion and at the assembly time where you put it in wrong) especially if ppl want to use it as a tutorial.
Great video, only problem I had watching was you get a little bit shaken up when the Sauter gets introduced into the mix
Now it just needs a Li-Ion battery mod.
Don't forget the audio mod
nowonmetube How about a mod which you can speed up or slow down the system?
What about a mod that adds a self destruct button?
@9:30 On the board of the GBA, there's a little number to the bottom right of the ribbon connector. It represents the number of pins used. There's a 32 pin and a 40 pin version of the GBA. Looking at the number, you can tell that yours is the 32 pin version.
Is there a reason you don't use Nitrile gloves or something similar when handling parts to prevent fingerprints? Great video btw
Good video. It helped me with my recently bought backlit console. I had the same centering problem as you did.
I'm not confident to fix the problem myself, but at least now I know what the problem is, and how to (generally) rectify it.
@19:55 Those solid 30 awg wires bonded together look like candy.... Mmm!
They don't taste like candy though
It was unexpected, to hear music from "Rocket Knight Adventures"!
Around 18:17 you say that you made a mistake and put the spacer on the wrong side (D-pad side). But when you put all parts back together at the end, I think the spacer was on the D-pad side? Doesn't the spacer belong on the side where is the A/B buttons?
Did you take the adhesive off for the LCD screen? I'm pretty sure I didn't see you go back and pull the rest off ^^;
The front screen cover? Yes
This is gorgeous and makes me jealous *stares at my crappy worm light*
I just started refurbishing and upgrading my childhood GBA and this popped up on my feed, this screen looks way easier to install than others, I have some questions though. The soldering controls the brightness settings right? And therefore isn't "required" to do? And if not, does the screen appear too bright or dark on the normal brightness?
It's not required, and if you decide not to, it's "normal" brightness, not too bright, but bright enough for most conditions
ADAM YOUR VIDS ARE AWESOME & THERAPEUTIC!
wats a deckle? like a dense , past tense pickle ?
In German it means "lid"
If I could only do such awesome stuff :'(
But nothing stops me from watching RR :]
They have a version for the GBA SP as well now. I have one on the way. Going to turn one of my AGS-001 into an IPS modded version. I also have a few AGS-101 but it's not really worth upgrading those.
I agree bro, it is not worth to ruin an original ags 101 sp for it! I hope you are enjoyed your new ''ags'' 101 :D
@@martijn439 I certainly do. The IPS screen look good on videos but it's even better in real. So sharp and clean. The one I got was from Ebay. It has 10 brightness levels and it remembers what setting it was at even if you remove the battery.
@@chamoo232 cool! im about to order one myself but idk how to solder
@@martijn439 I got a cheap soldering kit on Ebay. The only thing missing was flux and that's very important as it make it so much easier to solder. It's basically 3 steps. flux, heat, solder. Solder becomes liquid when it's hot enough and it stick well to the copper contacts and wires as long as there is flux. Unless you have very bad eyes I would say the difficulty of soldering the cables in the SP IPS kit is probably about 3/10.
@@chamoo232 thank yo ubro, i will give it a shot once i have the required parts
the funnyplaying v2 screen fixed some of the bugs that were present in the v1 like the screen tearing.
Tiny correction. The ribbon got fixed. Not the screen. That mean you can upgrade from V1 to V2. Bad news is that 80% of the price is the ribbon.
I just installed my V2 yesterday and get minor screen tearing during led screen resets and during screen transitions. Is this normal or did I get a defective unit?
Blueishsquirrel from the UK also sells custom glass lens. They can get expensive and take a while. I think I paid $30 total for two custom glass lenses.
I got all of mines from Ebay. Chinese sellers have shells and glass screens for pretty cheap. Can sometimes take 2-3 weeks to arrive but it's worth it for 5$ lenses instead of 15$. They are the exact same ones too.
It does say "A new plastic screen for your GameBoy Advance", so it sucks that it's plastic and will scratch eventually, but since it's described as new, I would still expect to receive it scratch free.
This is probably a dumb question but what do the wires that you solder on do? Like why do you have to do it? I’m new to modding
Do you have to do it?
Just want to say your videos are great, keep up the good work
Mans needs some tweezers while soldering -___________-
7:30 The sped up footage here looks like Pac-Man.
Leaving a like for my fav handheld. With the backlight screen its easily the best (original) handheld ever made !
Yeah I know its arguable over PSP :P
Still Im kinda sad that the LED indicator part havent been put back into the place since last vid :(
Is it necessary to solder those three wires or can they be skipped? if im correct those three wires allow you to control the brightness, but what would happen if i skipped them?
I'm a little concerned I did the funnyplaying mod and used the glass lens but the screen is noticeably offset to the right even centering it like you did.
The screen is bigger than the window, so you actually need to trim the hole so you can view the entire screen.
The way i offset it centered it more. Some of the screen is still hidden, but it's only a couple pixels on each side instead of being out by a quarter inch or more
Holy crap! That lens is so scratched up!
so relaxing to watch these videos
It's a good thing the GBA I bought to consolize also has bad L and R buttons (the actual buttons soldered to the board, and I couldn't find replacements anywhere). If I could put this screen in and then use it handheld, I'd be awfully tempted. But I can't. Safe. 😅
I'm tempted to use one of my AGB for the consolize mod but I would need to fix it first. It has a problem turning on. Either the on\off switch is worn down or the capacitors are going bad. I could fix the switch but I don't think I can do a capacitor job.
You could have just kind of sat the screen cover into the hole without taking the adhesive off, so you could easily remove it and use another since it was so scratched up. Was no real need to actually adhere it if they will end up sending you a replacement due to the scratches.
Im planning to do this soon. What a coincidence. Thanks for the link to the site where u found the screen.
I have a GBA SP that I have taken apart and cleaned. I got the left trigger button working reliably, but the right trigger button only wants to work if I apply a lot of pressure at a specific angle. I've tried using compressed air to blow out the contact, and I've let isopropyl alcohol sit in the contact and evaporate. It still only responds if I push it at an angle or use a lot of pressure. Is there anything else I can try before I replace the trigger altogether?
Rubbing your fingers on the IPS screen got me triggered 😂😂
Colby Millican all the better to wear some nitrile gloves right?
I installed the screen and tested it first. Worked fine and had displayed the correct colors. But after getting everything in place, the screen didn’t display the correct colors. So I took it apart and when I touch the other ribbon connector with my finger, the colors changed and have lines. Did I do something wrong or damaged something? I don’t see a tear in the ribbon. Someone please help!
Maybe something was wrong with the shoulder buttons?
love the videos but I wanted to kms every time he said "decal" the way he did
Please, what is the name of the intro song? It sounds so familiar...
I have change the ips v2 screen but I don’t know why it sometimes turn on the power but the screen black just hear only sound. Need to return on again.
Hmmm I wonder, about 2 years ago I purchased a pre modded GBA and the left button is solid and doesn't click I wonder if they messed up the piece of plastic you kept.
It's possible that the metal tab is just out of it's spot. It's also possible that the shell is too tight and doesn't let the button move freely. I had one where the white bumper pieces on each side were touching the buttons a bit and wouldn't let them spring back up properly. They still worked but it annoyed me. If you have the same problem it's easy to fix. Unscrew the back cover, take out the bumper pieces and file down the edge that touch the buttons some. You don't even have to unplug anything.
Great video! I ordered a screen from HHL and it was DOA, sadly. Here's hoping they make it right.
Adam can you give us a link for the fancy rainbow wire set? I see a lot of console modders use it. I've been a peasant using single strand 30gage wire even for complex installs :(
I don't have one off hand, i think i bought it off amazon though.
It’s just ribbon cable wire.
Man, you'd think that the designers of the backlit upgrade kit would measure their parts more accurately. The screen display being too big to see unless you trim the actual case, they should of just reduced the backlit display themselves.. The flipping of the flexible board parts is insane.
I suspect they used a mass-produced screen that was already available, and only really designed the ribbon connector. There's a fair bit that goes on on that ribbon, as the output has to be scaled and adjusted for the proper screen. I'd be surprised if this display were manufactured solely for this purpose.
@@RetroRepairs The screens are indeed mass produced and that's why they are 8$ each while the ribbon is 40$.

I pronounce it Dee-kale

Where did you buy the kit
Awesome video man, gives me the confidence to go and do this myself 👍🤘
Where can I get the wires for soldering?
If I would do this, I would buy an aftermarked case and do the modifikations on that one instead on the original case. Maybe you could call your sponsor if they could sell cases with that case modifikations allready done. That would be very nice.
They do sell aftermarket cases, but i was more interested in retrofitting a common color which already had custom decals with a better display and lens
They make aftermarket cases with everything cut out already. Might try that route. I shredded one case and I don't have faith that I could do it on another. Also, fat hands, I have.
Why didn't you use the centering bracket and centered lens?
Wanted to use a custom lens instead which was not sized to fit the standard ips installation
Seals on the "new" smudge and scratched screen cover and cleans it but ignores the dust/dirt/finger prints on the brand new display underneith. I kept watching to see if you would clean it. I'm triggered now!
Hi all, after my IPS mod i'm experiencing this issue where the select button works as it was the start button. Is it normal after I soldered TP2 for brightness control or not? Someone ever had such problem as well? Thanks in advance
hey there, just here to say i cant help you but i wish i could. ight thanks bye
@@clayl4650 I actually managed to fix it: there was a false contact on TP2; after I re-soldered the point correctly, both start and select buttons started to work correctly. Thanks
My man how do you fix a faulty speaker, that lowers in volume as you turn the nob? It cuts in and out, only some positions it will play sound
Try cleaning the volume wheel with some ipa.
What would really turn this into a Pokemon GBA is if it had a red face shell
What camera do you use?
So with the screen centered, I assume a tiny bit of the screen is still being cut off on all four sides is that correct?
Correct. The amount of lost screen is very minimal. Not noticeable. Id hate to have bad cuts trying to enlarge the window for the offset screen, and have to look at it.
I'll be doing another gba ips install where I'm going to try exactly that, so I'll be able to see which method ends up better
@@RetroRepairs Nice. I'll be looking forward to that. I actually have the V1 version of the kit. Would really like to be able to buy just the V2 ribbon cable so I can have the benefits of the v2 kit.
Just installed the V2 into my GBC the other day. Anyone know if tearing during led resets and screen transitions is normal for the V2? I know the V1 has some tearing issues, but I haven’t found much on V2.
Why not sand back the horizontal alignment part, i.s.o chopping up the gba?
Because the screen itself needs to sit in where the plastic I removed came from. At first i accidentally started putting the alignment part on the wrong side, but then adjust it later
Great video as always
Curious, I could use a resource for a Sega Nomad, capacitors, & screen.
Having an external video source would rock for video capture making the game boy advanced a console rock's. But I guess the game boy player will have to do until then.

Good! funnyplaying is the first manufacturers base on the ISP screen, others is copier.
What about a video of GBA restoration not working at all?
I got mine in and tried to install it and it won't light up, so do you think I have a broken screen, because I get sound and no picture?
Possibly. Im not sure if there's any board revisions that aren't compatible.
@@RetroRepairs Yeah, I have the original screen back in it and I get picture and sound. I told the seller the problem, and they want pictures of it installed.

@@RetroRepairs maybe i should of asked for an amazon link to the product lol. sorry. i needed up going with the 40 pin 10ft
Does anyone know if this is an easy first mod? I've never modded a console before, but I have a hideous clear blue GBA I wanted to replace the shell on & install this mod to.
You can buy pre-cut shells which already fit this display. All you'd need to do is solder the wires if you want brightness control. If you're ok without brightness control it's really just plug and play. I did a slightly more complex install, but it doesnt need to be that way
@@RetroRepairs Oh I definitely need the brightness control, I have photosensitive eyes, lol. Soldering doesn't scare me, my dad's done it before so I'll have guidance. But those pre-cut shells were a big relief to see. Thanks for the fast response!
The GBA mod is actually pretty impressive. I'm surprised how easy it seems.
Once you can get it lined up, it's fairly easy. Even if you don't have a soldering iron, you can do this mod, you just won't get the brightness control
@@RetroRepairs I have the GBA SP version of this mod on the way. It only needs 1 wire to solder and it allows the brightness to work using the SP's light button.
@@RetroRepairs if its me i would clean my finger prints off the back of the lcd
You can try some plastic polish on the screen
Ive got some plastX I'll try
Adam you forgot to enlarge the viewable area of the shell and put the spacer in the wrong part..anyway good video as always.
I talk about the spacer midway through and that it was in the wrong side. The purpose of the centered installation here is to avoid needing the enlarged viewing area. In this case, there was a custom lens which would not otherwise be usable
Does it matter if it's 32 pins or 40 pins?
The ribbon is compatible with both, but there might be board revisions that are incompatible, you'd be best to check first
Ok thank you
Are you going to do a rechargeable battery mod to it?
Yeah i was thinking that would be the next mod
@@RetroRepairs hell yeah. I've been wanting to get the original gba to do the backlight mod but didn't see the point without a rechargeable battery. Love the videos BTW. Keep up the good work.
@@RetroRepairs do you know how long the AA batteries last with the new screen?
I just did the ags 101 mod on my gameboy. I love it.
The 101 mod used to be the holy grail of GBA mods but this new IPS screen stuff put the 101 screen to shame. Getting a AGS-101 is still worth it but if you are modding an AGB it's better and now cheaper to do the IPS mod. There is even a SP version now too. Those old AGS-001 front lit GBA are climbing in price on Ebay now.
@@chamoo232 I'd rather not have any screen tearing, which is why I chose the ags 101. I do think the ips screen looks way more crisp and clear, though. It was a hard decision to make. I put mine in the Boxy Pixel aluminum case.
@@FranktheTank319 The screen tearing is gone in the V2 version. The problem is not the screen. It was the ribbon connector and it's upgradable for those that had the V1. I was holding back as well because of it as I knew it would annoy me a lot but jumped on it when V2 was released. There is no advantage left for the 101 screen. IPS is cheaper, brighter, sharper, has absolutely no ghosting and the screen tearing has been fixed. If you get your hands on another GBA I strongly suggest you do the IPS mod for the next one.
@@chamoo232 honestly, the gba is so cheap that I could get another one and just get the V2 screen. I'd love to do another mod even though I just finished mine last week. Could you post a link to the v2 screen? I'd like to take a look.

The LCD works fine except the color palette turns blue unexpectedly and stays blue which is peculiar. Do you have an ags-101 to compare it to?
No. This is definitely crisper. The 101 is still a good option, but more expensive, and the picture quality isn't as good. Some consider that part part a pro though, saying this IPS looks "too" good
@@RetroRepairs Do the pixels fit 1 to 1 or does it do some weird upscaling sorta like how ds games are on a 3ds screen?
@@NO_obs It's a 1 to 2 upscale. Each original GBA pixel takes 4 pixel of the new screen. There is no stretching or tearing anywhere since it's basically a perfect 2x upscale on a screen that has pixels 2x smaller. That's the main reason why it's so sharp.
