- A very common issue with original Game Boy DMG. Over time, the connection to the display starts to fail, and notable vertical lines start to appear. It's a very easy fix and I show you how to fix this problem.

Thank you for coming back. I know it may not always seem like it, but you make a lot of people happy by doing what you do.
I’m so glad you are back brother we missed you!
Please don't speak for all of us...
i recently repaired about 10 gameboys with this method. The hardest part for me was getting the rubber strip back in the right spot.
i took apart a gameboy like this to clean it up, and found a rusty staple stuck to the speaker magnet, nice little surprise.
Did you straighten the paper clip and re use it ?
I had the same experience
With modern replacement pieces - screens etc - these older consoles will love a long happy life and I think it’s absolutely wonderful
Why are your videos so addicting?! Love your content bud...glad you are back!
It's fascinating how the screen wasn't just striped, it was blanking to white at a certain interval. Anyway, I love your videos. I love how few cuts you make. Like, you could stream your work live, you're so deft with your work.
Great start to my Saturday. Thanks, Adam!!
Looking forward to seeing how you fix the screw posts! My NES has the same issue.
I just want to say thank you so much for taking the time to make this video. This 100% helped me fix my screen.
Thanks for this video, I need to do this exact repair soon.
Hi Adam, nice vid as always. Watching every of your new ones. Still hoping that someday you will get one with horizontal lines problem, because i still need to find a fix for mine :D
Grettings, Stan
My name is not Adam
Simple but great fix.
Thanks for your great videos 👍
Watch as the hardware wizard waves his magic wand and returns a dead display to life! Be amazed as pixels appear from the thin ether!
Pretty fascinating one to watch as a software-focused person.
This is the first "mod"/repair I ever did to a retro console.
I have 3 gameboys that were mine and my brothers' growing up that I need to do this with. They all have the missing vertical bars but are in good condition otherwise. Would be fun to fix them up and gift them back.
My screen was real stubborn at first and i melted a bit of the plastic it seems, then once the ribbon warmed up sudenly it started working for me!
Great work.
Nicely done man! I had to do this with a Gameboy my sister in law gave me. Works like a charm now. I also added a foam strip to the ribbon cable to add additional pressure so that it will have a more secure connection.
A plastic spuger to add light pressure while you heat the area makes this faster and more reliable in my experience lesst chance of the lines coming back
I remember hearing like 12 years ago that this problem couldnt be fixed
I hate that dmg ribbon cable. It always feels like I'm damaging it trying to connect the front half to the back half.
What kind of gameboy advance is that? Looks pretty sweet
Hi Adam what's happening with the nes top loader and turbografx cd?
about what temp F is your solder at doing the process with the screen
Nice👍
Where can I see the second part op the gb light repair?
Not done yet. At this point i need to wait for spring so i can repaint it
Where do you find broken gameboys would love to try my hand at fixing one i am in the UK 🇬🇧 🙃
Yussss!!!
I have a couple DMG's with horizontal lines.. I understand horizontal lines are alot more difficult to fix.. if at all.
It's the same fix, just way trickier to get access to. I've never tried one but i believe you need to desolder the screen to get at the back
Huh, seems more trouble than its worth right now, there's a single horizontal line on both.. annoying but not enough to potentially wreck them by desoldering the screens, but if I ever decide to go the lcd replacement route I'll take a stab at it then :)
Lcd replacements are great options.
THe price of broken gameboys on ebay is ABSURD.
It's truly wild. $40+ for broken ones
This is not a dig at the RUclipsr in this video but a compliment. Imo repair channels like this are what cranks the price up. Everybody wants a go and may use it as a stepping stone onto more complex board repair
I have a dmg where the whole screen flickers, not in the lines like you have, maybe a problem with the chip driving the screen?
Certainly seems like it could be a power issue to the screen if it's all flickering. Maybe caps, maybe the chip, I'm not too sure
👍👍
ok, I've got an original gameboy, but the screen only half works. I took it apart and the connectors for the screen are coming undone. I'm not sure how to fix this. If anyone knows of a video to help with this, or creates one, could you link me in on it please.
surprised the iron doesn't melt anything, or is it just that you're barely/not making contact?
The connector is pretty durable, it will take a lot of heat to melt it
not bad, id prolly just replace it with a new lcd screen.
Do you have an ebay store you use to sell your duplicate games or systems?
No. Anything i sell is solely local
I'd probably just replace the adhesive strip with some kapton tape.
It's double sided tape so the display sticks a bit to the rubber pad on the shell. Kapton tape wouldn't do anything
the worst thing about this is when you think youre finished, remove your iron and then it decides to go "nah i aint fixed" and some lines appear again haha
Worst is when you screw it all together then it decides it wasn't really fixed
@@RetroRepairs i am yet to have that happen 🤣
why not a IPS screen
Might happen in a future video, but the purpose today was to show how to fix this problem.
Lots of people can't justify $80 for an ips screen when this repair is free
I tried this on my korg triton keyboard screen because it had similar issues. Haha it didn't work 🤣
:D
"GAME BOY OMG"
Adam, can you PLEASE include the Celsius temps... it's the temp measurement 95% of the world uses, and farenheight means nothing to us...
My iron shows farenheit. You'll have to Google the conversion much like i would have had to.
@@RetroRepairs Would be a lot more convenient for your viewers if you did it though, instead of every single one of us having to do it every time you mention temps...
@@jarodatkinson5306 I hate imperial units as much as the next guy but this is a weird hill to die on. Type "f to c" in your search bar, literally takes 5 seconds
I usually don't even mention the temp, so if literally saying the number that appears on my station is a point of contention, i can always just not mention the temp at all...
@@RetroRepairs I definitely appreciate the info. I just learned to solder recently, and I'm still feeling out what temps are required for different work. Actually, about to attempt this on one of my own DMG's, and it's nice to have a concrete number to start with before going to work on a delicate, 30 year old ribbon cable!
The comment about what this guy got on his game was awkward
So was this one….
