    I've been intermittent fasting 3 months with so many benifits. But I wasn't losing weight. I really didnt want to lower carbs. Finally I have started lowering carbs and already lost lbs in 3 days. I'm starting to think I was in denial about my chocolate addiction. Lol. Let's keep going

    Thomas, you my friend are inspirational! I had heard people talking about keto and IF for a while now, when I decided to take the "plunge" and do something about my weight, I started searching the internet. Thank God I found you!
    Your videos are amazing. The way that you are so able to breakdown the science behind what you're talking about, truly blows my mind. I don't know if you will even see this comment, since it is on an older video, but I hope you do!
    This video was exactly what I needed. I was doing too much daily 16-8. That turned into daily omad. Both methods were being done utilizing keto, but NOW I know that I need to fast every OTHER day, to really reap more benefits, without slowing down my metabolism too much in the process. Huge shout out, from Texas!

    Hey Thomas I love your channel. I have water fasted for 5-6 days a couple of times and it seemed pretty hard.
    i just lit a fire under my but and decided it was time to loose the fat.Last week I started on Monday with a water fast til Wednesday and then Thursday i went dry fast and then ate keto Friday ,Saturday and Sunday. this was good but i didnt get into keto until the mid day on Thursday. I changed it up and went dry on Monday and i was making large ketones by the end of the day and then am water fasting the next three days.i am doing cardio and workout on the water fast days. IT IS WORKING! i have lost 21 pounds in 10 days. i plan to do this two more weeks to reach my goal.I feel so much better on fast days when i have been eating the ketogenic diet before I water fast. Thanks for the detailed info, based on research.

    Great video. This is what I’ve been doing for a few months now and was finally able to shed the excess hormonal weight. One benefit that makes fasting so much easier when you are already in ketosis. I would love if you could go into the difference of cravings when not doing keto before fasting. Seems like it takes the body a lot of time and energy to get to ketosis, but if you already are in ketosis the fast is way more productive. I sense there is another layer for those who struggle with cravings.

      Back in College, i used to Gym whilst on the fast. I found morning times were the most helpful. I would say to do your weight training either first thing in the morning OR after your meals, however, you'll never be as strong if you're burning more calories than what you're putting in.

    I am a 63 year old male, former runner, still active, still working full-time and on a Keto diet. I understand the attributes of fasting and one meal a day protocols. (as advocated by both Jason Fung and Valter Longo) Recently, I have been looking into the work of Dr. Stuart Phillips with respect to protein requirements, especially as we get older. I wonder if you could comment on balancing fasting with proper protein intake.

    Ive been doing Intermittent Fasting on and off for 10 plus years and find it to be amazing for so many things. I just need to wrap my Brain around what I need to eat for Ketosis. I’m trying to compile the best list of good fats. I generally don’t get more than 50 grams of Carbohydrates a day into my diet... 5 to 6 days a week average. Ive been a Protein nerd and self proclaimed local expert on the various truly healthy sources, for over 20 years... it’s the Healthy Fats that I am trying hard to integrate... and one of the primary reasons I SO enjoy Thomas’s videos. I dig the science, I just need to integrate it into my eating and lifestyle.
    Thanks Thomas, please continue to do the Amazing work you have done educating people.

      I currently have a 12 hour feeding window on most days and fast once weekly for 20 hours. By recommending 3 fasts per week, will 20 hours per fast be sufficient, too much, or not enough?

    • @CyrusTabery
      @CyrusTabery 6 лет назад +2

      I have loved doing 2 24hr fasts per week along with 12-18hrs per day. But I am super flexible with food and focus on super low meal frequency. As to which fats - butter and coconut oil are my top two but beef fat or pork fat in fatty cuts of meat are also a favorite of mine. Pho with tons of sprouts and veggies and no noodles is a go to for me.
      I get into keto so easily now days I use fasting more but will also often eat mostly keto between fasts as well. If I wanna bulk a little I may eat some more carbs or higher protein. I would finally mention high salt as being another key to my diet plan for maximizing insulin sensitivity.

      the thing I've found out about fats is that unless they are mixed with Carbs, there isn't a ton of variation in food, but there is variation in "breed". TAke cheese for example. there are thousands of types of cheese, it's almost like wine! Then there are seeds and nuts, your eggs, your fatty meats, avocados (my personal favorite) various oils like coconut oil and MCT oil. There are a few more but those are your basics. If you move away from those though you tend to start moving into proccesed foods, which arent awful but not reccomended for an over all healthy life style (which i'm sure you are aware of).

      Very good information and points. Thank you. I use the MCTs and am a huge egg person, have been for 20 plus years. I’m just trying to integrate sone variation as well. I have 3 Avocados that have been sitting in my Fridge for 3 weeks... I’m just working at working them into my diet... lol I’m not very adventurous when it comes to preparing foods. I look at them as fuel, and pretty much eat the sane things over and over. It’s always worked wonders for me, but with age and changes in my body, i have to make changes as well... I know this.
      Thanks for the insight.

    3.55 kgs in 16 days, IF was 2-3 days for the first week, now every day for at least 16 hrs. So far no problems, but monitoring it closely. Had a flu feeling today with diarrhea, lethargy and feeling a tiny bit sick, but not really nauseous. But ok tonight :) Lol, think I ate too much though, tonight (2 meals spread 6 hrs apart). Thomas, thanks for this video. I've been IFing for about two months now, nearly every day. I feel great, look great, have dropped weight and am still able to work out hard. I've also been eating a ketogenic diet as well, sort of as a default conclusion after watching so many of your videos. But my diet is pretty haphazard as far as entering/breaking fasts most effectively. I'd request for a video talking about what to eat as we enter/exit the fast. I know you have "how to break a fast" and how to get back into ketosis quickly videos. I guess I'm saying, more of that. Thanks again!

      I think that the longer you fast, the less unhealthy carbs and other unhealthy foods are. I love fried food and I find that gorging on junk food every now and then and fast the day after is a lot easier and more satisfactory than eating like a monk for those two days.

    302lbs in Jan 1 and now I’m 245. All from fasting and keto. Also getting strong. I recommend on the 4th month on fasting and keto to eat carbs and don’t fast for 2 weeks. You will gain about 10lbs but it will shock your metabolism and kick you out of keto but after the 4-5 days back on keto and you will start to feel hungry and lose weight fast again

    • @DodjiSeketeli
      @DodjiSeketeli 6 лет назад +11

      mtl47, yeah exactly. I am not sure why Thomas keeps saying that you should not fast every day. I have been eating one meal a day in the evening, every single day, for a while now, while practising martial arts at least twice or three times per week, in the evenings before dinner. When I don't have karate classes, I lift weight or I jump some serious rope. All my training is done fasted, of course. I feel great, my strength and endurance has never been so good. I regularly test my blood ketones (beta hydroxy-butirate) and I tend to be in ketosis since around 9 am for the rest of the day, even the days following a starchy meal. I eat only whole food, though. All my labs (blood tests) are great. Granted, I pay a lot of attention to eating lots of colourful veggies everyday, nuts, but also animal proteins sources like cheese (I live in France), eggs, meat from time to time etc. Again, I feel great, am not hungry throughout the day, am more focused in my work (I am a software engineer) and my willpower increased like hell. Heck, I just don't want to let go of all these gains. I'll let you guys know the day I start having deficiencies etc, real science/experiment style. But so far, fasting everyday has been great. Of course I am not as big as Thomas 😂. But that is not my goal in life. I enjoy beeing under 10% of body fat, weigh 67,5kg for 173cm, having 6 pack abs, 47bpm of resting heart rate and I am 41 years old. Really, from where I sit, fasting everyday works just great.

    Discuss the ketosis trigger point and best methods to layer IF with Ketosis. I find that it’s highly effective to do cardio within the first 24 hrs of fasting to trigger a deep ketosis from there it’s easy to maintain ketone levels. Without the cardio I find the body doesn’t fully accept ketosis mode and sits in low energy glucose mode that makes you feel terrible. It’s so subtle but is seriously effective, it’s as though the body has resistance to switch to full ketosis at about 0.3mmol so better to blast through than waste time and energy on the edge.

I know, I have lost weight but I refuse to look at the scale , Last time I weighted myself I was at 250 pounds ( 6feet tall ). My goal is to be at around 170 lb. In addition to this I trained myself to drink one gallon of water a day with some apple cider vinegar. I feel great, with lots of energy and thinking about doing this for possibly the rest of my life. I just turned 40 on the 14th and if I have my say , my body will never ingest another sugar or carb till my time is up here on earth.

    excellent explanation bro...this is where im at the past fortnight...layering the two...fasting and ketosis...losing fat rapidly...feeling great...good energy levels...lots of clarity...calmness...focus...improved restfull sleep duration...and still able to workout...thats on almost no carbs...high fat and also very low protien...feeding windows basically only nuts and seeds...i blend 12 or so different green leafy veg and herbs..half gets bottled and goes in the fridge...half i add home made bone broth...my dogs dinner...and take as hot soup..also home made sourkraut and pickled garlic...etc....on non extended fast windows...that is keto days...i use home cooked coconut oil...and the charred coconut bits that collect at the bottom of the pan...which i refrigerate in a jar...organic raw coconut oil is magic...probably why nearly all the fishing boys on the islands are ripped...now i realise the greens will spike insulin on the feeding window...but its minimal and short lived...and the estrogen busting cruciferous veg...cauliflower...broccoli...cabbage...kale...and others...dont know the names or recognise many...so much available at the market over here in thailand...one thing i will mention...chinese call it ku gua...english... bitter gourd...tough to take raw in a smoothie but ok blended into a hot soup...very bitter...good for raised test levels...course the big benefit to living out here is endless sunshine...no need for d3 supps...in fact ive been able to cut most all the supps out now...jus a good daily multivit and mineral which i use along with sea salt and of course the magic ACV ...coco oil...green tea and filter expresso on extended fasts...which so far havnt gone past 72 hours...dont want to push it...and lose muscle mass...so..again a great and informative presentation brother...many thanks for all the free info...much appreciated...im reaping the benefits...now i understand why the LORD tells us to fast often in the scriptures...something i hadnt been doing until recently on my walk...Amen to that...seek and ye shall find...knock...and the door shall be opened...thanks again brother...your doing great work...Godbless.

    • @soldierside365
      @soldierside365 6 лет назад +1

      Xbitrate I was IF’ing before keto, and it wasn’t actually much different. Like keto, once you overcome the initial discomfort of no food/carbs, you’re body adapts and it gets so much easier. Maybe watch fledge fitness because he’s an IF channel, but he still includes carbs.

      I've had a theory i've been wanting to try. When you fast or go into ketosis for a certain period of time, instead of your body becoming insulin resistant, it becomes insulin sensitive, which means your body produces less insulin when you eat. So my theory is that when you are fasting intermittently or in ketosis for an extended period of time, you could get away with a little extra carbs for a while because your body doesn't need as much insulin as it did before. My biggest piece of evidence for this is from my own personal experience. Over the last summer I was in a ketosis for about 3 months. Then one week, we had the annual summer fair. So I and my friends all got together to party and chill and relax. Suffice to say i wasn't in ketosis anymore. My diet included things like fast food, pizza, ice cream, elephant ear, deep fried Oreos for like a week. My exercise stayed the same, my diet was the only thing that changed. When I weighed myself at the end of the week... nothing, no change in weight and I didn't see a change in the mirror!! I'm not saying to binge on carbs or anything, i'm just saying I think your body learns how to properly deal with those extra sugars and carbs.

    • @soldierside365
      @soldierside365 6 лет назад +2

      Jesse Prososki interesting theory.. I suppose your calories, despite being from ‘bad’ foods, must have intuitively remained similar, on top of your fasting and exercise, therefore no weight gain? Plus, sounds like a really fun week so the stress response of fat storage etc. Wasn’t even there.
      I had the same kinda thing last year, for a couple months my diet was pizza, ice cream, peanut butter, protein powder, and vodka (was a rough time haha) and I still lost weight and I think it was because alcohol apparently puts you in deeper ketosis, hence why the day after I drink I barely want to eat..

      I don't know why anyone would want to bring their carbs past 70g unless they are an elite athlete. Even if you want to get out of keto, you should still only consume like 30-70g. You really don't need any more, and your blood tests will be much better than going past 70g. Basically, just eat more plants than you normally would if you want to go out of keto - like basically into primal/paleo.

    (not Jason Murray- I am his wife) I have been doing keto and fasting for almost a full year and have lost 55 pounds, built lots of muscle and feel amazing! My autoimmune disorder symptoms have decreased, my skin looks amazing, I have lots of energy to chase around my four kids but I have plateaued. I don't know if I messed up my metabolism by not eating enough during my feasting periods. My appetite has decreased so much that I have to force myself to eat. The only time I am hungry is when I am doing lots of lifting and cardio but then I gain back weight even if I eat well. I have twenty more pounds to drop and have been stalled for three months, gaining and losing the same five pounds. Does keto and IF continue to work past the year mark or do our bodies just adapt to this new lifestyle?

    Just a suggestion to all the viewers, it is also beneficial to start a ketogenic diet with a three day water fast or bone broth fast. If you have ever started a diet it and it seems like you are ravenously hungry the first month or longer than this could be a solution. Yes I know a three day fast is hard but you will not have that difficult month if you do it this way. Me personally I would rather it be difficult for the first three days than a month or more. I have started diets and fell off like most people and I can personally tell you that this has been the best way for me to adjust. After the three day fast I begin the keto diet and I am full off of such foods where if I did it the other way I would have a difficult month or so. Well anyways Thomas and viewers your input is appreciated, dialog brings knowledge and knowledge brigs success. Thanks for the videos!

      highflyer131 not an expert or anything, but you could start changing your macros to the point where you are eating a lot more fat (85%) than protein(10)and carbs(5). Eat more veggies :). A lot more. Basically, what you are describing sounds like mineral deficiency (sodim, potassium, magnesium) etc. Usually hardstyle ketogenic diet proponents don't eat enough leafy greens and veggies in general because they consider them as carbs. Try eating veggies of different colours (the most important one beeing green) raw and cooked in an unlimited amount. Don't count them as carbs. The probability that greens spike your insuline in a significant way is close to zero. And then, when you are not eating, try to drink water with lemon juice, salt and apple cider vinager from time to time. And see how you feel. That should help you replenish your minerals tank.

    Here's a specific question for you : If I decide to do the idea of whole day fast as you suggest in this video, what should be my eating window in the adjacent two days of ketosis. Day 1 - 8 hour eating window from 12:00 till 20:00 then fast from Day 1 20:00 - Day 2 - Day 3 12:00 ? - This would rake me up 40 hours of fasted state in the 3 days. Or should I not overdo the fasting window and therefore eat the whole day through on Day 1 and Day 3 without a controlled feeding window ?

      Were you working out or at a caloric deficit?

    I personally would love to see more about what to eat while combining ketosis with intermittent fasting (IF).
    I have been doing keto for about 2 months and have lost weight and feel amazing mentally. Your channel and content have inspired me to incorporate IF into my keto lifestyle, so would love to see more about food ideas while combining the two.

    so just to see if I got it right, it's okay to be on a ketogenic diet and doing intermittent fasting at the same time? like, fast 16h, then eat fats and protein in the 8 hour window? or did I miss the point?

    How do you maintain your nutrient level while fasting. What do drink to maintain energy during this time with out getting foggy and low energy?
