At 50, cutting carbs and no sugar has been a game changer for my high blood pressure, better sleep and feeling better than ever !
I began intermittent fasting about 40 years ago.
I was an electronic engineer and like everyone else in the department at about 11 am I got peckish and a slight tremor to my hands.
I noticed that on mornings when I was in a rush and didn't have a breakfast (usually cereal) I didn't get the tremor or the peckishness. So I stopped having breakfast and never had this problem again.
I recently discovered this is called intermittent fasting and this has also led me to go keto/carnivore.
In order to get my life back, I pushed away the plate. I fasted for 48 hrs every other week and gave my organs the break they so desperately needed. I usually dont eat for 18 or more hours each day. 186 lbs. DOWN And currently carnivore (meat, eggs, little cheese).. I got my life back!
I just finished my first 48 hr fast since hoing carnivore. It was too easy! When youre in ketosis for as long as I am, its just easy!
Another great video. Your content is extremely valuable to me and I am so grateful for you. Our next video visit is the end of August..cant wait.
Hey Anna Maria! I am watching the video right now and just read your comment. Next time we chat can we talk more about fasting?? You are so inspiring! The world needs more of Italian Gone Carnivore! So thankful I found you!
@@FERF3275 HI! Yes, let's. It has been a blessing for me ❤️
I'm down 100lbs. I can't remember to eat.
My son needs to remind me, and he obviously only does once in awhile.
On Weight Watchers I went meal to meal and was starving. Never lasted more than 3 mos. Never kept the weight off. Now, 5.5 yrs ketovore. Down 80#. No regain. Not even during COVID.
@@tracy3812 fantastic work!
@@youtrades😂😂😂
Congratulations 🎊 to all of you. Thank you for the inspiration 🙏
I like eating lol, but I also like the way fasting makes me feel. So I've learned that to fast, I need to do a 24 hour fat fast, then a 48 hour fast follows naturally.
Yeah 👍 fasting definitely cuts inflammation down more if you’re in pain like me. I sometimes wish I didn’t require food…
“Breakfast is a walk with my dog” 😂
Did you realize Crystal Light has Maltodextrin>? We stopped drinking it due to that.
Yes I had to get rid of mine. It’s even in some brands of salt! Why do they put it in everything???
Broth and pot roast are great for breaking fasts. So is heavy cream and butter.
Yum! Pot roast! Must be hard smelling it cooking though…
After eating the SAD, hunger becomes a trigger; so worry about being hungry becomes overwhelming when considering "fasting". But eating protein and fat creates an easy fasting, automatic fasting state. If you eat just when you are hungry, and to satiety, you will not overeat.
Ketosisfirst then fasting easier to enjoy
I start to get a little “peckish” after 20 hours and I get anxious about doing something stupid. That’s been the case with so many of my efforts. So I allow myself to have a boiled egg or a piece of cheese, a slice of leftover chicken and then I’m calmed down again and I can make it till evening time when I have my dinner. I’ve only been doing this for 7 weeks. I’ve lost over 20 pounds, my blood sugar is coming down, I feel great! I’m just not sure I can go a full 24 or 36 hours without eating. Why risk it when I’m already doing so well? Bottom line is I don’t really like being hungry. I know my ancestors had to do it but I am doing the best I can. ❤
I can do 24 hours without problems, one meal around 18h30. I do not like to go further, sleeping on an empty stomach normally means I won't sleep well. But during the day I don't have a problem.
It’s fine, do what makes you feel better
It's something you have to work up to.
As Dr said, have the timing right: feel content within yourself, minimise stress give yourself the best start.
It’s no big deal if you find that this time it didn’t work out, just try again another time when you are on a high. Your body will thank you and you will start to love it over time. Then it’s easy
It's working and you're comfortable with it, so keep doing what you're doing. If you eventually become unhappy with the results you're getting or your thinking shifts, you can try going a bit longer then. Don't stress about it now.
Dr. Boz is a preacher of extensive fasting.
Breaking a long fast: have 1 cup of bone broth, wait one hour. Have 1 scrambled egg, wait another hour. Have another scrambled egg if you feel like you need more time, and wait another hour. ✌🌸
Still get the shiz💩
@@robertcywes2966 better than a sudden electrolyte shift leading to a potential heart attack and death.
@@Storm_Lily When I was a meth addict 40 years ago I fasted for what seemed like weeks and then when I would refeed I would binge and and many times I felt like I would literally die.
So now ( at 70 yo) I am afraid to fast move than 24-36 hours because I am afreaid of feeling that terrible and being that out of control on the refeed side.
@@dixsigns1717 congratulations on breaking free from that addiction!! You probably were close to death if that'show you felt! If you desire to fast that long again, you could find a supportive doctor or nurse who would control the refeed. Otherwise, 36 hr fasts are immensely beneficial. Take care dear friend. ✌🌸
I’m histamine sensitive so can’t have slowly cooked foods like broth. I also have an overgrowth of h pylori so can’t have fermented foods
This is one of the best common sense videos I have watched on the topic of fasting. You convinced me to fast 5 days instead of 7 days. Thank you, doctor.
Thank you looking forward to hearing how to break a 5 day fast. As I have become Carnivore I now break my fast with a smallish Carnivore meal. I used to do salads but now realize protein is what is most urgent.
Yuck. Salad. That crap is like putting poison in your empty body with fake nutrients because most nutrients are not bioavailable. Thank goodness you quit doing that.
Thanks! I was watching for this. You are great!
Thank you for sharing your knowledge- not eating vs fasting now understood.
Great video man,thank you
I absolutely adore your brutal frankness soooo refreshing❤
Did keto, lost 145 lbs. Concerned how fast weight came off. Hunger nonexistent. Lost some muscle mass. Gained all the weight back once I got back on the carbs. Got cancer, did chemo and now trying to take weight off again and it is much harder since poisoning myself. :) Wondering if I have an enzyme problem because food "stays with me" for many hours and am miserable when I eat a large meal. Thanks for all you share Dr. Cywes, I feel like I am putting more pieces of the puzzle together.
Keto, ketovore, carnivore is a LIFESTYLE... not a diet to lose weight and go back to the SAD lifestyle...
Best of luck and health to you as you go through healing from your cancer/chemo. God bless ❤
Was exercise a part of your regiment? You shouldn't lose muscle mass if you're doing long walks and some weights.
@@BarbaraJ1111 Right on and thanks.
@@jimrutherford2773 Ah, excellent question.....no weight training, I was just walking.
Good luck and best wishes for a full recovery!
Excellent video!! I love fasting!!
Looking forward to part 2
Thank you for the fantastic orientation, Doctor! There are some things about fasting about which I had some misunderstanding, and this video has given me some good tools.
Great video-thank you! 🙏
Fantastic 🙂
Agree! When I heard you talk about what a carb addiction looks like OMG. That was me!
Thank you Dr Cywes
Very interesting way to look at eating. Storage and utilization. Balance that, and that's a lifestyle.
100% agree with everything. Dr Chaffee says the same thing. Eat until satiated, then don’t eat until hungry again. Carnivore makes this very easy. 3rd week in, already float between OMAD and dinner every other day. Couldn’t get me to eat during the day
Come at me bro.......I like this doctor. Keep up the good work.
I'm 5'10'' 160lbs with an a1c of 5.4. I'm looking to get to the next level of metabolic health, and I think adding fasting days into my weekly routine could help me get there.
I have a lot of trouble fasting. I can't do it. I had Rue en Y (Dr. Robert Marema) in 2009. I lost 150 pound and gained most of it back. Then I discovered Keto & I'm now carnivoire. I can skip breakfast, but that's about it. I can't go 24 hrs. I've now lost 220 pounds, kept it off, and my A1c went from 10.8 to 5.1. I'm 77 years old.
I think seniors should fast differently, I’m a senior and have problems fasting past 18 hours or I feel bad, dizzy and start getting where I don’t think right. I used to have low blood sugar , then for years I didn’t then started getting lb sugar again then went on keto after getting a cac score showing calcium.I need to find a happy place. I just started in almost a month. I’m 69. I have fasted for years just normally for me about 16 hours a day but was eating carbs.
Yes, you can do it, stop the excuses
thank you i also have low glucose levels and feel great
Thank you for your message. I have tried fasting and by the next day I was so lethargic and couldn't think straight. All I wanted to do was sleep. So I have decided to just eat 2 meals mostly carnivore. I do eat a few pistachios too. But I'm at the very beginning of this life style
I think you have to step into fast. Steak and butter gal has a lot of videos on priming and fasting that may be helpful!
Terrific video! I really appreciate your explanation of fasting. A lot of information, so I’ll have to watch the video twice! I look forward to the next one. Love from Vermont
Love that State!!!
@@robertcywes2966 Maybe someday we’ll have a carnivore convention up this direction. It would be great to hear you speak in person! Thanks for all you do. Love from Vermont
This is brilliant. It is exactly the answer I have been looking for. Carnivore/keto since early October. Love fasting but was told to eat fat every two to three hours, and absolutely no fasting. I eat 60g protein, 0-10g carbs (veg), the rest of calories animal fat. I have gained 25 pounds. Tonight I decided I’m going to start fasting again. I hate eating fat all day, I just don’t want it. Thank you so much for this video. I believe it’s the answer for me. ❤️
It’s not for you then its okay
Looking for a Dr. That shares these same ideas in the Dallas/Ft. Worth, TX area.
same in Poland ;-) I'd say "good luck". Thanks God we have Dr Cywes and few more doctors who CARE.
Me too but in Mesa Az
Thank you! I always feel like I'm listening to a friend. 72hrs was enough for me. I started to have intestinal issues on day three. I bike 150 miles a week, and I need to eat.
Exactly
Intense exercise is generally considered inconsistent with fasting.
Yes, that would be almost impossible.
I don't want to lose another pound but want the health benefits of fasting.
I love your videos, Dr. Cywes. Thanks for everything.
I'd love to hear your opinion on Dr. Karl Goldkamp's Protein Sparing Modified Fast. I haven't been able to find other doctors talking about it.
Utter failure after treating over 1000 pts. Horrible hunger
I will need to watch the video twice in oder to absorb it all! I'll be looking forward to the one on breaking a fast because that is where I tend to get into seriou trouble. Blessings, from Idaho
BOISE IS MY SECOND HOME. Will be floating down the river later this year
I seriously listen twice, first to listen, and then to take notes!
The drinking of beverages is prohibited from sunrise to sunset during Ramadan. It's not just food. I find that there are two aspects of this spiritual practice that are suboptimal as a dietary practice, there is no biological benefit to dry fasting versus a water fast that I am aware of, and eating two meals right before you go to sleep and again right before sunrise means that you are going to bed on a full stomach and you are going to be chronically sleep deprived.
When I imagine doing this for a month in a hot desert climate it just looks like self torture to me.
Exactly. Dry fast
Thanks for this video Dr. Cywes! I've already had people telling me to be careful and/or fasting isn't good for me but the scale is moving down and I don't feel bad at all. I actually feel good and I feel like I am eating only when I'm truly hungry. The longest that I have been able to go so far is 20 hours, I usually just do eat twice. I do black coffee and water with electrolytes during my "not eating" period. I hope I'm not eating too much when I do eat after but I'm sure I'll learn that and we'll discuss it when I see you for my bloodwork review.
Humans have been fasting 1 million times longer in our history than not fasting.
Hearing it is bad for you is something I can relate to. So annoying to hear it. 🙂
Good info, was worried i was doing to much fasting and gonna end up hurting my metabolism lost over 200lbs this year so far doing keto/fasting , usually OMAD, then throw in a 48 hour every 2- 4 days. Just started Carnivore this month to see the difference gonna try carnivore for a good 3 months to give it a good try, So far its really easy after going into keto the last 5 months.
How's it going now? Did you struggle with that much fasting? Also, do you mind me asking your original weight?
I would be interested to see the evidence that long term fasts waste lean muscle using MRIs since we know protein in the urine can mean different things, not necessarily muscle protein wasting. Thank you for the video, it was very interesting and helpful!
Loving the theory “just not eating”!
Another good video. I hope you will do a series on cancer and have Thomas Seyfried on.
#properhumandiet
It’s easier just not to eat.
Thank you for these awesome videos...Just crossed 2 month mark into carnivore from keto. When I am teaching, I have had the emotional need (I think) to graze on fats for the hours I am teaching. But I am also just above underweight. Do I really need to graze on fats during my high brain functioning time or do I need to replace my fats with something like a bridge drink? My fats of choice are butter, sardines, and mct oil in broth. I teach at home so this is always available to me.
Can you discuss muscle synthesis and how its affected when fasting?
Thank you for your wisdom. I am not diabetic, so I'm assuming I could not get insurance to pay for a CGM. I guess I could ask my doctor if he'll help me get one, but he may not buy into the insulin resistance monitoring and reduction.
Just found your channel Doc...Im going carnivore starting this Sunday 😅 GO BLUE😊
I’ve been doin carnivore for a week. I’ve ate and drank everything for many years. Eating meat is great but I have SERIOUS cravings so far.
I thought the focus was on what do I break a fast with? Protein was discussed quickly over but no exact foods. So is steak a good fast breaker and what type of micronutrients for a keto eater? This was more of a focus on fasting and blood sugar video. Hopefully next one gets more into it
All my life I wanted to do a 5 day. Most ever 4
This week going to try
I stop eating by 7pm and fast unit 1240pm next day. I eat 1 big meal. I'm truly so use to this. I can't stand eating breakfast
Such a Master Class! Thank you so much for the important insight to make complete lifestyle changes. And to think my GP and Endocrinologist get paid to tell me nothing. Seems quite reversed. Love your videos!
Finally a Doctor with relevant competence for talking about this. Unlike all the chiropractors on this platform..
Welp... That was unnecessary slam😮
I’m fasting on carnivore to heal disease and inflammation. If I didn’t have this condition I wouldn’t fast for long because I agree with this video.
thank u sir
I remember Dr. Cywes saying fast before any surgery big or small. Going for balloon sinuplasty next week and will not eat the day before. My longest fast was 72 hours.
Make sure there is no dextrose in ur i.v.
@@robertcywes2966 When I had hernia surgery a few years ago I mentioned that, and the Dr. went nuts saying "We always give dextrose." I didn't want to piss him off more, so I said get on with it.
Hey doc there are few exceptions to prolong water fasting beyond 72hrs worth mentioning. It speeds up insulin sensitivity, lowers inflammation, and cancer. I am also not a fan of dry fasting either as we do require electrolytes for nerve signaling, muscle function, and blood pressure regulation among many ither reasons. But several days of dry fasting is fine for those who are use to doing it. With fat beta oxidation as well as gluco neogenesis the byproducts are water and carbon dioxide
Agreed, but dehydration not good. We recommend exercising during fasting hence water and electrolytes
You're answering some questions I have been trying to get some accurate answers on just how long is safe without causing muscle loss. I have lost over 95 pounds, am in a healthy BMI, but I find some benefits from fasting. At 58 years old, I know I need to preserve muscle, so knowing the healthy way to fast is important. Thank you so much!!!
You can fast up to 96 h at a time without worrying about losing any lean tissue in fact you should gain due to growth hormone. But beyond that starts to be an issue.
Hey doc. What do you think about Mercolas recent change of opinion on keto? Cortisol, etc
Start by treating couch, chair and tv addiction.
Your letter writer apparently hasn't done an internet search on how to end a keto or carnivore fast. There are a lot of them. It is amazing how many people are addicted to carbs. Thank you
theres loads of different videos on how to end a fast, lots of them are contradictory. He was asking his opinion on it
What about cephalic insulin response when using a bridge during fasting?? Is it something to be concerned with or no??

No measurable on a CGM. An internet fantasy imho
Any advice for (permanently) very skinny 62 year old manual worker? (I’m a self-employed gardener). Fasting seems an impossible concept for me. I’ve spent years regularly snacking during work (supposedly to keep my energy going) often feeling hungry and worn-out. I am a meat & fish eater. My body is now complaining in multiple ways! Would the keto-carnivore / fasting method help someone like me?
19:30 The 'Bollywood' story -- the major challenge in India (and China etc) who have seen the 'Western Diet' as aspirational -- being able to put on a banquet, to be able to show wealth through food. Being fat demonstrates success. The fast food 'chains' who have insidiously inserted themselves into these worlds have marketed themselves to corporate success and human failure.
And there is almost zero regulation of what they serve or advertising, making it much more damaging.
all in the interest of the big pharma and big crap food companies...
I eat at 10 -11 am and about 4 -5 pm every day. I don't get hungry or snack in between. I've never been into sweets, so carnivore has not been difficult. I guess I'm eating enough fat! I'm 71, 5'8" and about 120 lbs. I quit smoking 3 packs a day a month ago and feel great. I've started exercising to get my HDL up. All my other bloodwork looks good to me. My biggest goal is to not lose anymore weight and even gain a few...
So as a truck driver I’ve eaten so much bad stuff on 14 years I’ve got hypertension bad and high blood pressure I’m on meds. I’ve just started this journey , I do 24 hours eat a ribeye steak or two with eggs then repeat . Lots of butter . Water all day and coffee once . Am I on the right track? It seems I’ve gone down 3 belt notches o 5 weeks already..
Admittedly, I plan to stop eating - usually after lunch - but resumption can vary between the 40-50 hour mark, depending on how I feel.
Doing this weekly. All other days eating a 90 % animal diet
Excellent
Dr. C....you have extras to burn off for energy. ..what happens if one does not have 😊extras????
Would you share the brand of the CGM you’re using?
I have been carnivore for a year. No cheese….i do have stevia from time to time. My blood sugar level at 60hrs into a fast is 90-100. 5’6, 145. Still trying to understand why.
Can you make a video about having honey included to your Carnivore diet? It’s a very interesting topic.
Honey = sugar...
I've done dirty keto for a few years and carnivore for 5 months and I still can't get into ketosis. I regularly fast 16 - 24 hours for a minimum of 9 months and still no ketones, no weight loss. I've gained and lost the same 6 pounds over and over. I need to know how to get into ketosis. I have a blood monitor to see my ketone levels. It is .2 or .3 which is not in ketosis. Maybe I should take ketones. Help please.
The doc says by not consuming calories you are not breaking your fast. I have heard that if you eat or drink anything that raises your blood sugar, you've broken your fast.
Perhaps I can get an answer. I don't understand why it's time based. He said 36 hours to get into a fast. Is that assuming an average amount of calories burned? On the weekend, I may burn 2500 calories just laying around. On work days, my fitbit says I'm burning 5000 calories. How does this affect fasting times and autophagy? Wouldn't a caloric defecit make more sense? Thanks.
“James is just changing over the tape…”? Like magnetic tape? I haven’t heard that kind of statement in a while.
I practice extended fasting 3, 5,8,12 days. I open eating with few days on bone broth and egg yolks and then eating normal carni . Glucose is usually 3.5 mmol and ketone at around 4 mmol. Also training during fast. Wondering of its ok tp have such low glucose and training fasting
Of course...as long as in ketosis...it's called NORMAL
May I introduce you to August Dunning. Research on dry fasting. It's amazing. I have completed several 7 day dry fasts and never was dehydrated. Did blood work on the 7th day and every lab was within normal limits.
Doesn’t a 36+ hour fast effect your thyroid negatively? Doesn’t it mess with your hormone levels? Energy has always been an issue on SAD Or Carnivore and NOW low carb high fat. Less but still there; I’m on iodine right now to try and self correct. I am East Indian and feel that I have narcolepsy/hashimotos. Never been high energy.
What does deep ketosis taste like? All i know is my husband complains my breath smells when i fast even if i brush my teeth & gargle before seeing him! Help i refuse gum!
How do we know if we are consuming too much protein that can be converted to more sugar have lost no weight in 7 weeks with 2 fasts and remaining high bs
I've been doing low carb/carnivore, not keto for 3 months and have lost 25 lbs and yesterday I had labs and my A1C was 4.9 but for some reason my urine showed I had a level of 80 mg/dL for ketones. Is this bad?
Am I doing something wrong?
First time I have heard someone say I can smell I am in ketosis. I have noticed a frequent sporadic odor for the last 4 years on ketogenic diet and thought something might be wrong.
It usually happens when starting keto, you smell "fruity" from the acetone the body is producing. But later, when the body gets more fat adapted that tends to go away. I assume it comes back in Dr Cywes case because he was producing a higher amount of ketones than most, as his glucose was going into what would be considered the hypoglycaemic range.
What do you think about using appetite killing bridge drinks in fasting? Sometimes I drink pickle juice. Sometimes I throw a pinch of salt in my mouth.
Good idea
I need help to understand my blood work.
👍👏💯
Usually i do an 48 dry fast and i had only positive results
I never knew there was such a thing as breaking a fast with something special. I fast for three days and break my fast with over easy eggs and a ribeye. Never had any issues. What problems do some people have?
People that have digestive issues might get a digestive upset of breaking a fast with a very fatty meal
Skeletal muscle isn’t the only source of protein in the body, plus, doesn’t the body recycle or break down junk proteins before finding good protein to convert into glucose? HGH goes up on extended fasts (peaks around 72H, I believe), which helps preserve skeletal muscle. I’m not convinced extended fasts for obese people isn’t a good idea.
Hi Doc. From your practical experience do women feel better on carnivore diet during menopause?
I sure do!!!!!!!
Curious to know what the differences are between you and Dr. Fungs opinions are. His books were my first intro to keto and fasting.
I think that Dr Cywes is similar to Dr Phinney who are very concerned with muscle loss in extended fasts. They both agree that up to 48 hr fasts are ok (as long as there's proper refeeding in between), but longer than that it can be dangerous except for very specialized situations like fasting during chemo treatments to maximize their efficacy. Dr Phinney is also concerned with a reduced metabolic rate for those that fast too often. I've done 3 days a week alternate day fasting and it has worked well. Sometimes I do the modified version that allows up to 500 calories a day in the "fasting" day
I think all depends on context. Dr Fung talks usually about therapy for metabolically sick people. Once you regain your health it would be better to do 1-2x 36hr fasts per week instead of 5+ days periods without food.
@@nataliajimenez1870 thanks!
@@Meritumas makes sense!
Dr. Fung talks about longer extended fasts, like 5 days or more, but it's more when he's discussing fasting in theory and science. In practical application, the company he set up with Megan Ramos, called The Fasting Method, mainly recommends regular 36-48 hour fasts for therapeutic purposes. Some examples are three 36 or 42-hour fasts or two 48-hour fasts per week with 2-3 meals on eating days. They don't recommend really long fasts, although they do provide some info on them to keep people safe, like info on how to break those fasts to avoid things like refeeding syndrome.
My herb tea is my bridge
I did a 10 day water fast. No bother!!! But you MUST be fat adapted first!! Drink sugar free electrolytes if you have low blood pressure like me. It is great! I could have kept going but I was getting nervous so I ate. I immediately got diarrhoea but I think that was the shock of eating a full meal.
As Dr. Mindy Pelz explains, your intestinal stem cells are rebuild after a 24 hours fast. It is normal to get diarrhea afterwards. I get it too.
He never answered the question is it safe to break a prolonged fast with meat??? I have the same question
I would not do meat to break a fast.....a few boiled eggs would do. You've given your digestive system a break....why shock it by giving it meat right off the bat.
My first day on carnivore just completed my 72hr fasting I'm 400 pounds 😢
Good luck on you journey brother.

You got this! You are worth it! Eat to live ....not live to eat
Did he just recommend CRYSTAL LIGHT?????? 😮😮😮😮
Does anyone use cream in your coffee during a fast?
I use heavy cream
Then that's not a fast
The main problem with any discussion of prolonged fasting is that there does not appear to have been any clinical trials to prove any of the many theories out there on the effects on the body, metabolism, the brain, etc. Every pro-fasting doctor on RUclips has case studies and theories based on their understanding of endocrinology and metabolism, but none of them can back up their claims with published studies from peer-reviewed journals. What is needed is a randomized clinical trial (in fact, multiple trials) with a fasted group compared to a control (whatever that might be) group and a measurement of the effects of the prolonged fasting on different biomarkers. Perhaps it would included multiple groups fasting for different lengths of time or consuming different levels of calories from 0 to X. Absent hard data, all of these videos on fasting from all of these doctors are just anecdotal and theoretical, regardless of the qualifications of the presenter. Please don't make major decisions about your health based on a couple of RUclips videos with no study references or data to back them up. Then, please don't make health decisions even with the studies to back them up without consulting with a health and nutrition professional that understands the science and your own personal requirements.
I was ok with a 13 days fast. Jesus did 40 days too. the guy from the 60s did more than 300 days...
