    I have been doing keto and one meal a day + (exercise 4 times a week) for the past 2.5 years. No food for 18 to 24 hours every day. This would be completely impossible without running on ketones and with carbs. It took about 6 months to really rewire. Years, later it completely changed my relationship to food. I no longer get the addictive pleasure from eating. My system knows EXACTLY how many calories it needs without measuring anything. If I am off, it will tell me next day. This shows how dis-regulated we really are. I was a carb junkie and yo-yo dieter and now I am perfect size and steady. My blood pressure is the lowest after 20 years of hypertension at age 54. No meds. This will save your life.

      Thank you for sharing your story. I’m inspired as I am about to embark on the Keto way of eating and transition into 18/6 IF. I just turned 56 and with a BMI OF 39, chronic hypertension, early stage Atherosclerosis, and DVT, I am more than ready to take back my life before death takes it. I’m doing the 5/25/70 plan, 1,800 daily calories.

      @@johnerickson5311 Good luck with your journey......dive in deep and research the "hell" on the progressions from LCHF to Keto and then Carnivore (zero carb), you will be astonished how quickly your body recovers. You already mention IF, make sure you look up and listen to Jason Fung & www.dietdoctor.com is a good reference , but don't go off into keto-treat/land keep to "really-real" foods. 👍

      Thanks for Sharing I have started Keto a couple of months ago and now heading towards carnivore
      My body is fluctuating with low energy, keto flue, skin breakouts....etc

    Took me 10 years to quit sugar, I was medicating my depression with it. It was bloody hard, probably the hardest thing I've ever done. Healed my reumathoid arthritis with intermittent fasting and cutting carbs. 12 years medication free!

      I disagree. Sometimes a healthy snack is more convenient when you are at work and unable to cook food yourself. Everyone can't only eat at home

      @@thakraken6995 I did. And I worked 12 hours straight and biked to and from work. No carbs for breakfast. Eggs and undrained bacon kept me running all day from 4am-5pm. If I ate carbs, I'd bonk hard about 6-7 hours into the job and would take about 90 minutes to fully kick into ketosis and recover from the hypoglycemia. Snacks ended up being my downfall 6 months in when you make donuts and baked treats. Carbs really are an addiction.

    Our bodies take eons to evolve. Our bodies are still wired for ketosis. Give your bod the fat/protein fuel combo it is wired for.

    IF (after a relatively brief adjustment period) really does reduce cravings, especially carb cravings. I agree it shouldn't be a diet - it should be part of a normal, permanent lifestyle. The worst advice I ever followed was to eat 5-6 small meals per day, spread over my waking hours, for weight loss.

    Hey Doc, just FYI being a Muslim myself, just needed to correct a little detail about Fasting during Ramadan. We don’t eat or drink from sunrise to sunset and in addition give up all bad habits such as smoking, swearing, sex etc etc. So it’s considered a dry fast for the body and soul. We spend most of our days praying, worshipping, educating ourselves about The pillars of our Religion. Also charity and volunteering is a big part of our month and all year long. Salam Doc!

      ​@monicacollins8289 sex is not considered as bad at all neither the food or water. 😂 You just don't have sex during your fast, which is between sunrise to sunset. You are free to do so after you break your fast.

      While I have a captive audience. I work with pregnant women who either have gestational diabetes or pre-gestational diabetes and during Ramadan we fight with them to eat! Many take insulin and take a chance on having hypoglycemia and possibly passing out. Either way, fasting is not good for their blood sugars. Then the ladies gorge with their family at Sundown and their blood sugars are thru the roof increasing chances of stillbirth. We were told that pregnancy is a condition whereby they don’t have to fast. Yet every religious time we fight with our Mommies. There must be a cultural component that we are missing. Is the family or Father of baby wanting Mom to fast to make the baby more “holy” or closer to God? What can we say to respect their need to participate in their religious community and not compromise their health.

    There are many keto groups I belong to on Facebook where members are in ketosis all day because they’re eating very low/no carb, but they’re still eating and snacking all day long...because eating/food is an addiction too, not just carbs.

      I left all the FB groups because they were all either giving rubbish advice or being too judgemental about people that were struggling. I found them toxic and unhelpful.

    Thank you Dr. Cywes for so eloquently speaking to the so called Asian "paradox" to low carb diets. When vegans bring up the "paradox" of slim Asians who eat mostly starchy plant foods, they always leave out the crucial element that these slim Asians accomplish this because they don't eat anywhere near as frequently as we do in the West. Hence, since they live their lives in mostly a fasted state, this is what allows them to be slim even with an abundance of starch in their diets. The fasted stated allows them to stay insulin sensitive. It would be foolish to apply this paradigm to a group of people who follow the Western model of meal frequency, because we are mostly insulin resistant due to this frequency of eating. To therefore say that because starchy eating Asian populations are slim, and therefore Americans should load up on starchy foods is, at best, a fallacy, and at worst, a lie.

    This is a great video! I also like calling it Intermittent Eating instead of "intermittent fasting". It has a different social connotation, yet it is the same thing.

    What's great about Keto is that I'm always afraid to weigh myself because I haven't been starving myself or running 20 miles a day. I think I haven't done anything to deserve to lose weight. But the needle on the scale keeps going down.

    Very true about stressors and the desire for carbs. I'm about a year into IF and No Added Sugar. Last month was the first time in my life, 49 years, that I had a stressful time and didn't resort to sugar. Probably the most satisfying part of this whole journey.

      @@timothy790110 Because of the Intermittent Fasting thing, I didn't have anything! But if I do have to eat something, I go with high fat like cheese or nuts. As an aside, the other day I had some blue cheese stuffed green olives, and was that ever good.

      @@Lance54689 I stay away from anything containing oxalates now, I had a kidney stone in dec and 4 more in there from eating too much oxalate rich food 8spianch, nuts, olives etc) , and I NEVER want to have that pain again.

    One thing to correct you on Doc:
    Muslims during Ramadan do not eat or drink anything (no water either) from sunrise to sunset.
    The issue many of them have now is a carb binge after sunset and all the sweet refined carbs during Eid.

      I feel the same way. I think we are going to dump everyone else and just follow Dr. Cywes. It gets crazy out there with so many people and people with stuff to sell, and I get that, and some are pure in motive, but he just seems to be in it for the change in people’s lives he knows can happen with this correct way to live and fuel ourselves! (See, I didn’t say “diet” because it’s NOT a diet.) He’s all about good health and the result of that will be a healthy weight! Eat keto/carnivore, get healthy, the weight will fall off and level where YOUR body is happy. So grateful to him and to have found him!

    Also, early grains/veg were far less carb dense than those in modern times that have been hybridized/genetically modified to increase the sugar-starch content; so, while not optimal, were not as damaging as those of the last 50 years.

    So true. I went off keto about a year ago...thought, I could get away with just doing IF and the occasional 3-4 day fast for weight maintenance. Yeah. Didn’t happen. I wasn’t able to control portion sizes or frequency of meals. And I didn’t manage an actual several day fast at all. I gained 8kg in about as many months...it sucks, but...no more carbs for me.

    What you say resonates with me. I am just now coming out of a carbaholic relapse. I suffer from depression with suicidal ideation and take passion flower for it. Best antidepressant I have EVER found, and I had been on most of them before I found that it was basically caused by wheat. Nonetheless, I discovered quite by accident that if I took my passion flower a few minutes before or after I ate wheat, it did not cause the depression. Bad move. Led me straight back into the cycle, once in a while to everyday consumption of snack foods, breads and sugar. This cause inflammation in my joints and I got where I could hardly move. To get back on track, I did a 48 hour fast and then came back to eating once a day. Now my eating window is 16:8 alternating with 23:1. I have recognized that 23:1 is best for me, but hard to do during holiday season. I noticed a difference in my joints within the first 24 hours of abstaining from food. It's not a diet; it has to be a way of life for me.

      @@hawktchr8 Due to the flu that's going around I haven't been back the clinic yet. Maybe in June I'll go... mostly carnivore now. Veggies and nuts a couple times a week at most.

    I so much agree! I first tried doing alternate day fasting, which lead me to aweful binges on eating days and making me stop it altogether and gaining all back and some. Felt like a loser. Now I re-learn eating normally...

    I went hiking right after graduation , many years ago. I didn't bring a watch with me and my mother was dumbfounded. "How will you know when to eat? Or when to sleep?" she asked. Because 3 meals a day at set times was apparently handed down to us at the creation of the universe.

      Is that not amazing! I told my husband the other day after watching several of Dr. C’s videos, that I feel soooo sorry for our parents. Oh my gosh they had the worst information, and they starved themselves fat!! And they could have eaten everything they loved and felt so good and they suffered so much. The evolution of the last 50 years - ending with idiots like Dean Ornish telling people to starve themselves vegan...Have you seen Vinnie Tortorich’s Fat documentary on Prime? So good.

      @@hawktchr8 I used to be "Sugar doesn't make you fat; fat makes you fat" person. Felt so self-righteous eating rice krispie marshmallow bars as a treat because they were "healthy low fat snacks." Then I got the information I needed. So it's not just our parents who had the worst information, we started out with it too! I went on low carb diet for blood sugar / insulin resistance reasons, not to lose weight. I haven't counted a single calorie in this time, but somehow lost 30 pounds, quite by "accident." So Dr. C may be onto something.

    I have long pointed out to people that even in an agricultural society that all you have to do to know what to eat you need only look at seasonal availability....meat is always available, fruits and some vegetables produce for a short season (late summer/fall, just prior to winter ) and most vegetables and grains that produce a single crop (also late summer/fall). Fruit/veg/grain cause fat storage which helps sustain us through winter, (like the hibernating bear, and also when calorie burn increases due to the cold) spring, most of summer (by which time the stored fats have been burned off). Keep in mind also that the fruits, vegetables and grains that where available to humans up until a couple hundred years ago where all natural (non GMO) a lot lower in carbohydrates and a lot smaller variety.

    My woman loves having breakfast with me. So I make sure I eat my dinner supper early like 5 or 6 pm so at least I have a little bit of fasting longer than 12 hours.

    When I eat appropriate foods and eat only when I'm hungry . . . IF is automatic; & I have no intention of forcing a fast. I will eat when my body needs nutrients and make every effort to give it the nutrients it needs.

    I’m from Philippines and I’m very much of rice person 2 to 3 times a day but now I am doing once a day meal for 3 years and I’m eating more meat and fat than veg as I called ketovore.for 2 months My diabetes is gone, no more metformin and fatty liver is gone too for nearly 3 years. I never think I can leave rice behind but I did and it’s very easy to me. Sometimes when I visit my Filipino friends I will ate rice but I lost my appetite on it. It might be my self control is just strong.

    I really have a tough time with mental health as and excuse to eat or not eat, to overeat...etc. I think its about commitment and taking a stand and holding your line. Cant always give yourself excuses. Hence would love to broaden my narrow frame of mind. great podcast.

    Yes. I tell people I don't do "intermittent fasting". I just don't eat unless I'm hungry. Once you get rolling with carnivore it becomes amazingly thoughtlessly easy to go for long periods of time without eating, at least as long as you have the fat stores I started with... The biggest mind bender is training yourself to be aware of your motive every time you eat and finding out how often stress or boredom is the cause of eating instead of the need for nourishment. Advertising and social traditions just feed into the addiction cycle. I'd say it would be almost impossible to pull it off without support from loved ones, because the world still will think you're crazy, but Oh MY GOD is it worth it. At 52, I haven't felt this good in 20+ years.

    I’m asian and rice is my staple. I do 16:8 IF daily and eat 2-3 times a day, rice and meat. Healthy so far with lean body.

    I would have to definitely agree with you on the distinction that a SNACK is an emotional event I would go so far as to say there is a correlated dopamine release too that precedes it to drive the intention to achieve the outcome of Eat a Snack/Self-acknowledgement/Reward/I deserve it.

    I eat at around 12-12h30, a small lunch, and then a bigger dinner around 19h00. Basically on 18/6. Low carbs. Yes, sometimes I become hungry, like now it is 16H15 and I am starting to think about what I am going to have for dinner. This has been my life for about 16 months now.

    I loved your video. I have been following Dr. Fung and Dr. Ken Berry for a long time. Can you please do video on prostate health and explain if IF/Autophagy helps to reduce BPH... Ps. Muslims actually dry fast and eat and drink nothing between dawn to dusk for a month.

    Interesting that when I was a kid I noticed my farmer grandparents and aunts and uncles did NOT eat breakfast. They got up at 5 - did chores till lunch and ate lunch and dinner only. All of them were slim even though there was home made bread and raspberry jam almost daily.

      Yes! When i visited my farming relatives every summer they were up at dawn, many days before the sun came up. The women (i was small and would just help stir things or set the table) stayed inside making the brunch that the entire family would sit down and eat together. None of them were overweight, actually had athletic builds, even the older grandfather was in great shape and would work all day long. On the weekends would perform on stage playing blue grass music. =]

    If I look at the supermarket shelves, the penny mostly has not dropped in South Africa. Margarine overwhelms butter greatly. The shelves are stacked with snacks and processed foods, fruit juices and soft drinks. Bread and bread rolls are available in abundance.

      That’s because it’s all inexpensive crap. Compare the price of butter vs margarine. In Kenya butter is 6 dollars for 250g. That would buy 1kg of margarine.

    I like time restricted eating because it DOES curb any sugar/carb cravings I have had. It's a lot easier to make wise decisions without the cravings.

    Yes this is emotional stress. I am a carbohydrate addict. I have done the carnivore diet and gave up al carbos for the last month. I lost ten pounds in one month. I was 122 and now I’m 112. But I have to say I think about carbos and miss them.

    Okay. They mainly gathered (women) during the day; they hunted (men) when animals were nicely fed/jobs were partitioned by gender. Weight loss along with some apoptosis for internal housekeeping, dinner at 6pm then no food until the following day's late lunch. I eat a carnivore diet.

    The hardeat part of IF for me is that I'm a contractor who works out of a truck. It's difficult to have a real meal & break your fast in a half hour window in the early afternoon. Limits me to cold food that I can pack each day.

    I have to say I agree with you i am diabetic and fast 16 to 20 hours a day and have not been able to give up my carbs totally I also allow 1 sweet and I am still loosing weight so something is working the insulin has to be getting better otherwise my weight would not budge

    After getting my cac score I don’t want sugar or carbs, I check labels and learning all the different names for sugar and other poisons in our food. Fasting at least 16 hours a day, sometimes 17, two meals a day or I don’t feel so well. I tried to IF for years , never lost a pound until I removed carbs.
