I drank coffee almost my entire life. Three years ago, at 60, I was curious if I could live without coffee. The withdrawals where intense. Two days of brutal headache and one week completely depleted and depressed. Afterwards I felt better and better and was surprised at how much better it felt without coffee. Since then I never drank coffee again.

I gave up coffee for a month before I did a full lipid panel, because Dr. Paul Mason said that for *some people* coffee can raise triglycerides. I did a little N of 1 experiment. I am happy to report that abstaining from coffee had zero effect on my triglycerides, or any other lipid markers.
As soon as I got my results, I put in a batch of cold brew mocha using my French press... coffee plus 1/2 cup of CrioBru (coffee nibs you brew like coffee). Next morning, I put 4tbs of the cold brew concentrate and a tablespoon of grassfed butter, teaspoon of beef gelatin (makes the froth frothier), poured boiling water half way, used the milk frother to whip the butter into a froth, added more water to fill the cup... after a month away from coffee or mocha, this was a cup of heaven.

      Sarah,
I was told, if you add a small amount of salt to your cup of coffee, it removes the bitterness.
      I don’t know.
I prefer light roast peaberry coffee that has flavor without bitterness.
The peaberry coffees have one coffee bean in the pod, not two.
In my experience, it is the dark roast coffee that has more bitterness.
I woukd think how it is prepared makes coffee more bitter, also.
I prefer cold brew, light roast, peaberry coffee for full flavor and pleasant taste.

This was timely. I gave up carbs and sugar. I unconsciously started to drink sparkling water. It seemed like a non guilty treat to me as there is no sugar, or sweetners, or anything but carbonated water and some essence of lime (my favorite). I did not realize until this video that it was my serotonin high that I was chasing. I just knew it was what I liked and I didn't even realize that as an addict I NEEDED to replace one addiction with another and that other one needed to be healthy and non harmful. I am viciously defensive of my sparkling water. I LOVE it.
It makes perfect sense. The first thing we have to realize is that this overeating and carb/sugar problem is an addiction and needs to be treated as such. Thanks for your no nonsense approach of education that really hits home.

I’m three months into being a ketogenarian and also love my coffee. However, I was still experiencing real difficulty getting to sleep at night, so had to reduce my caffeine intake. Even when having only one “proper” coffee first thing in the morning and the remainder decaf, I was still suffering with insomnia, so I cut out caffeine altogether and now only drink decaf. I still enjoy my coffee even though every cup is decaf. I know decaf has traces of caffeine, but significantly less, and I am sleeping better.

Anyway, we came back detoxed from caffeine after decades of addiction and decided to carry on.
Bought decaffeinated coffee beans and they tasted great and we have never looked back.

    Tea!
Never been a fan of coffee but I love my tea. Especially that fresh cup I make in the early afternoons. I use loose leaf tea from places like China, Taiwan, Japan, India, and similar. It requires I spend a couple of minutes fiddling with infuser, the leaves themselves, waiting for water to boil, and a steeping. I then sit down, close my eyes, and spend a couple of minutes sipping the tea and relaxing.
The entire process, including boiling the water, takes about 5 minutes, but its five minutes where I've separated myself from the chaos going on around me.
That afternoon ritual is probably my favorite part of the day.

Nothing wrong with an expert giving us all of the facts that they have... nobody has all of the facts, but if we all keep sharing the ones that we do have, eventually hopefully humanity will arrive at a better position. That's all anyone can ask for until a God shows up who knows all things and can give us the truth of all things, which obviously isn't going to happen for basically everyone prior to death. But one thing can be for sure... we don't have all of the fact. But before I give a few additional facts, I just wanted to reiterate that I'm happy these experts stand up and do videos sharing with us all that they can, all that they know. Nothing wrong with that. And I truly appreciate it, and I continue to devour their videos like a sponge trying to soak up every factor and variable that I didn't before know. I appreciate them, as teachers, the greatest profession and charity and benefit in the universe. Thank you from the bottom of my heart, forever! Excellent video. Keep 'em coming! Now to add my insignificant two cents. And I add these as an addition, not a replacement, and not to say that the video didn't give us plenty of new and vital and precious and valuable information. Add my two cents to it, don't detract from, or belittle this video, it's more knowledge, and truly a great video. Now just to add a part two, footnote, additional information... here are my two cents. I love when everybody says that they lived a long and healthy life drinking coffee (I'm not referring to any remarks made in this video, but exclusively to the masses, the billions of people, and especially in the comments section of countless videos, and even thousands of people I have interviewed personally), because they forget the fact that they could've lived longer and healthier. It's sad to think that they could've lived even longer (and higher quality of years), but if they're happy with the lesser lifespan and lesser quality that they did have (or still are having) then I'm happy too. Their happiness is all that matters. Reading the comments section is horrifying, sounds like AA meeting Alcoholics Anonymous in reverse, Addicts Anonymous much? The fallacy, I won't say ignorance (because certainly it's out of everyone's hands and not intentional), of humanity is that everyone here is talking about lipids, triglycerides, sugar levels, insulin, mental clarity, and a plethora of diseases and other conditions and so on... imagining that those are the only health factors and variables which exist in the body which has millions of components and conditions, infinite number of possibilities on how it can go and end. Lets focus on the wheels of the train and the stability of the bridge and the velocity and the number of passengers and the reliability of the pilot and so on... and forget about the infinite number of other variables involved in arriving at the station on time and in one piece, because if that makes everyone happy, just to let nature take its course aside from us dumping whatever we want into it, then sure, everyone has that right, and for those who want to be a little more certain, a little more insured, a greater possibility of even more years and more quality... also have that right, and they have the right to know... that there is more data involved, that everything is being astronomically over simplified for the sake of pleasure... hopefully not greed... perhaps even just for entertainment purpose which is also totally an awesome part of the human experience... it's okay to have humor about things, even death... just so long as everybody gets all the information that exists (which unfortunately seems inaccessible to the average person and not yet found online)... so that they can choose as optimum of a quality of life as possible or the opposite, freely. I think most people comment the way they do, out of helpless despair, trying to add a touch of humor to a dire situation, a quality of humanity which is our greatest quality, that we can have hope or at least a good laugh regardless our circumstance. For example, I could say in the comments section that "I drink more coffee than any of you... chuckle... in spite of the fact that inside I'm crying not laughing about that fact. And all day long at the coffee shop I can be heard mentioning repeatedly how delicious my caramel machiato is... which could be an entirely new video on an entirely different but equally explosive health topic (caramel machiato is the most sugar heavy coffee you can drink), don't worry I have since cut back, and now mostly do White Choco Mocha which possibly isn't much better... the bottom line is that our comments shouldn't be taken at face value and our constant pursuit of more knowledge and more power regarding our health and humanity's progression needs to continue unhindered, thanks to RUclips and other mediums for mass communication and dissemination of the facts that we do have, hopefully one day culminating in humanity's attainment of all facts, the truth of all things, i.e.- that perfect day, even Utopia. And hopefully there is coffee there, albeit it'll have to be a hybrid, somehow made perfectly healthy and yet super delicious and as good a kick of energy or good feeling or whatever it is that we love so much about it, as ever. Continue on! Keep the vids coming!!! Keep growing!!! Thank you for it, forever!

While listening to my goto carnivore guy (dr Ken Berry), he introduces clean carnivore (water and meat) for the first 3 months, and at losing all negative symptoms, reintroduce 1 ingredient and watch the result. If the symptoms return, then that ingredient is not good for you. That way one can determine whether any ingredient has a negative response on our body. I think, that that particular use of strictly drinking water for a short period of time is a sensible way to clean up, before you test the results of ingredients (coffee, thee, any vegetable, etc). Thank you for the video. In a few months, I hope to enjoy coffee again!

Then I started hearing that I can't have my sweetener.... On top of that people saying that I have to drink black coffee (YUK!) I just started my carnivore/keto way of eating. I'm a natural meat eater and have already had a mind change that I don't want that junk food in my body ever again. It has been about 6 weeks. No, I'm not seeing body changes, but there is major mind change. At any rate, I did not want to have to give up my tea or my coffee...especially my tea. I drink over 100 ounces a day of tea. That would have been a deal breaker for me.

Great video. I love coffee. I’m trying to cut back though because of adrenal fatigue. The rationale is that coffee causes your adrenals to release cortisol and adrenaline, and if you have over stressed adrenals, they can burn out and stop working normally. This often shows up with sleep problems like difficulty falling asleep and staying asleep. Of course, your adrenals can become over stressed because of physical and emotional stresses. Coffee simply adds workload to the adrenals. Also, the brain adapts to the amount of caffeine you consume so I would love to be able to get similar dopamine benefits from coffee but with less coffee.

Some get panic attacks from it if they are generating predisposed to getting them from stimulants - even at a low dose. I work in mental health and it exasperates me how many psychiatrists prescribe powerful and addictive benzodiazepines to patients with anxiety, before they even suggest trialling getting off caffeine.

Hi doc! I personally love coffee so much to the point of addiction. After I started my ketogenic diet a couple of years ago and managed to reverse my diabetes and insulin resistance I turned my attention to my adrenal fatigue. I learned in that journey that caffeine is a neurotoxin and an endocrine disruptor in that it has a negative effect on the hormonal balance especially the adrenal gland hormones like cortisol and adrenaline, so I decided to drink only decaf coffee. I've been drinking decaf for almost a year. Now I feel much better in terms of sleep cycle and stress. Recently I turned my attention to my iron deficiency which in my case is originating from low stomach acid, so I started supplementing with iron. The problem I faced was that my morning cup of coffee is definitely going to block the absorption of that iron pill which I also take in the morning. So I decided to drop that morning cup of coffee, which is my only cup of coffee. It's been now 2 weeks coffee free. I never felt any better. I'm really surprised that you say that coffee is ok when you know very well that, along with tea, it blocks the absorption of many nutrients like iron. I'm convinced that caffeine in coffee and tea is bad for health, not to mention the other constituents they contain.

Caffeine is more toxic to some than others. It's all about how efficient your liver is at making enzymes to break down the caffeine so it has minimal impact on other biochemical functions. That's the explainable reason why some people can consume copious amount of caffeine and it has minimal negative effects.

Thanks Dr. Cywes for telling me that its ok not to be perfect in what I drink or how I eat. Ive known for years I was a carb addict, and didnt know how to fix it. I tried diet after diet thinking I'd fixed it each time. I was a perfectionist when dieting, then when the crash came(it always did), also came the feeling of failure. Ive always said that once I failed, I would get up and try again, which I did. This is the first time that anyone has really gone into detail about carb addiction the way you have. The info in this video made so much sense to me.
Ive been a ketovore for over a year and have lost 109 lbs. The best part is the mental calm I feel not obsessing about food. I fell into intermittant fasting mainly because Im never hungry. I feel great now.
Question- any chance this addiction is hereditary? My father's carb addiction was far worse than mine. Most of what he ate were process foods. Fast food commercials were a big trigger for him.
    Thanks again!

A work colleague once asked me if I chose one for the rest of my life, coffee or alcohol, what would it be? I answered coffee in any form without thinking. And that’s despite the fact that I really enjoy craft beers and fine reds, even if it is much less often nowadays. Am down 13 kg using a combo of IF and keto with one cheat day a week. Slow but steady wins the race.

  • @NoOctopuss

The dopamine/serotonin action is useful to know! I did try to enjoy caffeinated and sweetened drinks instead of eating/drinking carbs based on your recommendations. But I couldn't sleep from the caffeine (even in one green tea) and I got horrible headaches from the artificially sweetened sodas. I've never been interested in coffee. So I'm sticking to my favourite drink, which is sparkling water with a squeeze of lemon or lime. Even if the bit of lemon or lime might not be ideal for my teeth, I just love it. I also like herbal tea, my favourite is Celestial Seasonings Cinnamon Apple Spice, which has quite a sweet taste, actually (I think it's the chicory in it). I also like decaff iced tea with lemon, and though I don't want to drink too many decaffeinated drinks, it's certainly nice to have occasionally.

Good to hear that coffee works for you. Others have quite a different experience. For me coffee delivers a rush of energy for a couple of hours followed by extreme tiredness. Also while coffee has no calories itself it destabilizes my blood sugar level which results in eating foods high in sugar. This is the last thing needed for a person trying to loose fat, obviously.

    • @tjburr1968
      @tjburr1968 4 года назад

That's interesting! Even black coffee affects blood sugar? As you say destabilizes it. U sure?

    • @jensherrmann8202
      @jensherrmann8202 4 года назад +2

@@tjburr1968 Yes, I am sure based on 20+ years of experience. For me drinking coffee also leads to bonking (hitting the wall) when running or cycling, a phenomenon of low blood sugar. In this situation you will eat anything around that ist high in sugar even out of a trashcan. This does not happen when not drinking coffee. There are also secondary symptoms like knee pain and diarrhea. So coffee is not for everyone.

I'm an endurance swimmer and swim between 2-8 hours at a time. I have a problem with gastric reflux when swimming if I eat anything with oil, fat and protein. What I can eat before I swim in large quantities for energy before I swim without suffering is Sour dough bred with potato flakes. I can't eat whole grain bread even because it too causes reflux for when swimming longer than an hour. So I eat up about a half a loaf of sour dough bread and can swim up to 8 hours with loads of energy and no problems with gastric reflux. Coffee is a killer before swimming but I do enjoy a cup of decaf after I'm done. Caffeine raised my b/p slightly so I avoid it. Some people are more Sensitive than others. I'm so happy coffee works for you to reduce your caloric intake. Enjoying your videos. Thank you.

I am a chiropractor who recently started eating ketovore/carnivore who has lost 40 pounds in very short order. I believed that fat made me fat and salt would make me have a heart attack and all of the other "bullshit" that the world would have you believe until you and Dr Berry have completely changed my way of thinking! Thank you so much!!!!! I have one question though, I have helped thousands of people stop having lower back pain by stopping them from drinking caffeine and drinking more water. I truly don't completely understand why this works but I can assure you that it does work. So I am hoping that maybe you can shed some light on why it works so well? Is it getting them off of sugary drinks that causes them to not have back spasms anymore or was it caffeine that I had suspected that performs as a diuretic that I thought it was or is there something else that I am just not putting together? I would truly appreciate your input. Once again thank you so much for all of the work that you do, I would not have ever changed my way of eating without input from someone as educated as you explaining to me what I was doing to my body by eating all of those carbs.
