    I remember being scolded as a kid. So many lectures about the dangers of the boob tube. "It takes away your brain cells . "Why would you want the 📺 to tell you what a story looks like." I was taught to entertain myself with my own imagination what . We were also very poor and did not have a 📺, or cable for a very long time. So it was an easy argument for my parents to win. My mom would take us to the library all the time. I would pick a library over the 📺 any day.

    Nice collection of videos, thank you for your thoughts. 🖖 (USA context) TV from the past seems to have articulated ideas of communities across American continent, stereotypes were built and reinforced, for good or ill. Sub-cultures such as the Italian-American community have been explored by TV, differences and similarities of our humanity are shown through shows such as the Sopranos. It seems to me that old TV were the myths of our modern times, something that charges our imagination and reveals things about us. Social media seems to be revealing the cracks that have always been there. Kant has commented about how the human mind builds the laws of nature. We build the myths, we have to build beautiful and magnificent new ones.

    Hello Maye , I'm saying one thing about the early days of tv. Live tv. with great plays ( Playhouse 90) and honest and clean comedy. We fell down in the last 50 years, and early radio was also really good and imaginative . This also fell down. Extremely important to read the Bible and go to a Bible study. Read the Olivet Discourse. Matthew 24.

    This is what we are seeing the result of on many levels. From international politics to even our close relationships, reality tv as the frame work for how we think of our values and self-worth is limiting. Your analysis touches on the writing of Marshall McLuhan speculation on our lack of language to look beyond the all consuming nature of television and how it has changed our view of reality.
    You do see the benefit of being able to see beyond our own circumstances by having access to tv and the internet. Which is why we have way more world views and life styles being embraced. Basically these are all tools and how we use them I think, there is saccharine fluff then there is substance. People are defining themselves more individually and not accepting the "norm". You can stay on the "farm" or find a new way by seeing there are other options.
    Any how, very worthwhile entertainment.

    That was my favorite video of yours, so far. I really enjoyed the way you brought things around to look at the positive side of the coin. Nothing is all or none; it’s not all gloom & doom, despite many appearances to the contrary. I was going to argue that the very real danger in being overly entertained is that, in our perpetual distraction, we can end up blind to many more important things. Maybe more crucially, when people depend on entertainment for being informed about current events, they’re very easily deceived into blindly trusting sources that are just catering to their desire for entertainment. We love to complain about media fear mongering and biased reporting but, per capitalism, they’re simply giving us exactly what we’re asking for. People are deceived precisely because they WANT to be deceived. The market for self deception is massive. And as you helped me remember...maybe that’s not the worst thing. Ignorance is bliss. At least for awhile.
    Also true: a little bit of information (or false information) in the hands of the unwise can be a dangerous thing.
    I just wish the ignorant and misinformed knew that they were, so they’d stop acting out on that false information. Go on, entertain yourselves to death and enjoy the bliss of oblivion...but please, quietly and out of the way. In reality, the least informed tend to be the most opinionated and loudest.

    You know, Beautiful, that I actually have a possible fact about TV ruining the human being. I'm not referring to the content viewed in the program, but of the recalibrating on how we communion with one another after becoming Programed by the TV. Example : Our communication is most successful when in a mental state of focus. Unfortunately, that focus is not there and has been replaced with the exact same attention span of the different flashed images within a single commercial. Our brains have been transmitting that constant switch to our minds, to a point we don't realize we actually mimic the pattern of such commercial during our social communication between each other. If You are talking to me upon a particular subject, the programming of the TV has made me (the listener) not able to stay on focus to the subject, because mentally I'm changing different images of thought as a Consequential behavior I am now aware of.

    Spot on & timely vid as always.
    The fairness Doctrine not being codify as law just accelerated everything is entertainment.
    It’s always wild to see in the late 60s early 80s. Just how many long form table discussion on complex political/social issues
    I think there are leaders but most of them are doing the work within communities. More folks need to actually go to people who study & actually know what they are talking about.
    Influencer who want to get involved should explore more & find activist/organizers who are out doing the works
    When seeking out info it’s good to NO one is knowledgeable about ALL things.
    A person who is specialists in subject
    talking about the complexities of another.
    Proceed with caution
    ie: this person a brain surgeon they surely know about the nuance complexities of poverty/social issues.

    • @MayeMuses
      @MayeMuses  3 года назад +1

      That's true. We're finding that the qualities that make one a good influencer don't make them a good leader/organizer and vice versa. It's rare to find one person with both. Maybe knowledgable people should start taking media classes, because they will, and IDK if influencers are going to start studying. Something's gotta happen.

    Even this comment I'm about to write has to be entertaining so ppl are goin to read it and give me a thumbs up. Stop right there, its not gonna be entertaining. Maye, I watched your video about ppl leaving LA and I stumbled upon this. Very interesting book and thoughts. Many points I would like to talk about (its Lockdown and I'm bored af). But I'll just pick one. 20:01 Why should we be miserable? Obviously I didn't read the book, but I suppose it's not about being miserable. Maybe its about being aware. Aware how dangerous it can be to feel safe and satisfied. You probably heard or read this quote “Hard times create strong men. Strong men create good times. Good times create weak men. And, weak men create hard times.” I'm from Vienna, Austria but my roots are in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Small poor villages and simple ppl. One thing that I noticed are the old ppl down there. Women or man, 80 and 90+ are still working around their houses and are able to take care of themselves. Most ppl their age here in Vienna need daily care. Either at home or in a retirement home. What is the common difference? I know I'm am generalizing now. A harder life. If this is true, is it worth striving for a harder life? At least we, who are fortunate enough to even be in a position to think about it? I really don't know. It's not like me fellow herzegovinian ppl are only miserable, they are fun, love to laugh, sing and enjoy life. But they see the world so differently. For us new generations, it seems not understandable. But I'm trying. Maybe we should all.

    • @MayeMuses
      @MayeMuses  3 года назад

      I have heard that quote and I agree. I personally feel we could get through easy times with self-discipline, but unless people are in sports, have a talent or have strict/negligent parents, it's hard to develop that level of self-discipline. I think it is unfortunately a cycle, and we're in for a rude awakening if we don't tighten up.

    i don't think tv, social media and internet ruined society. i don't think society is ruined. i think tv, internet and social media have helped spread and normalize different thoughts, ideas and perspectives. growing up, before social media and the internet, i was extremely lost and curious about my surroundings. i wanted to know more about, lets say, a light year. i was limited by my local library and the librarians who ran it. i remember asking my teacher how fast a light year was. none of my teachers could answer that for me. i remember sleeping in the library over my stacks of books searching for my answer after watching an episode of star trek: the next generation. none of those books answered my question. today, i can pull up google in my pocket and get my answer in a split second. with the internet, social media and sometimes the tv, i can pull an almost endless amount of ideas and information that spiral my curiosity into the unknown. it's amazing. we only had these things for almost a century, so these medias are still in their infancies, compared to the universe. i think people are still learning how to adapt to this light speed of thought and ideas. we are taking baby steps and there will be times that we fall or get lost along the way. we have descended from experts who have been winging it for thousands of years. "to infinity..."

    Has TV ruined society? Really good question and a thought that old people have had sense the before time. I don't feel like it had single handedly ruined society but I do think that it has exacerbated the issues of an already influential people. Humans have always craved entertainment (ex. Gladiators). TV is a gift and a curse in my mind. Does it pull us away from books? Probably. Does that makes us less intellectual? Well I certainly have a harder time remembering the beginning of lectures or even conversations without writing notes so maybe. I respect what ...see, I don't remember what the author's name is...what the guy says about entertainment influencing politics, teaching, and religion or at least how it's presented. Too much evidence to say otherwise. Glad to watch this piece of entertainment given the recent foolishness. Thanks!

      I'm editing a video to address this very issue. Our definition of "fun" is skewed in the USA. We think fun is consumption. I grew up in a Puritanical state with a stoic academic family, who are still fun to me, but that's too extreme for most people. Other people work 12 hr days and just want to chill afterward. There has to be a happy medium. My personal "fun" to discipline ratio is 1:3, 1/4 "fun," 3/4 discipline.

    I’m a 80s baby n I never heard of this book. U did a good review, it kind of sounds like that book 1985, there no doubt we were all born into everything wrong (and right) with the world, I’m not sure how ur channel came up (prob RUclips algorithm), but this platform is a hybrid of TV since it not as censored as TV (but beginning to be) and has advertisements (early on RUclips didn’t have advertisements), either way what is most important (esp times like these) is that you’re solid in who you are and whose you are (keep YHWH (God) first thru Yahshua (Jesus)), we’ve all been so influenced (aka brainwashed) about religion and who we are that getting this takes a lot of time (literally one would have to unlearn everything they’ve been taught from schools, churches, tv etc., and learn the Bible (Hebrew the best since that the original writing, but it not required there a lot of meat in the English version) comparing it to their life experiences to make sense of themselves and their surroundings, I hope u take the time to read it, it a lot longer than the book u reviewed but it worth it! Take care.

    It's even reflected in the architecture. The older architecture is more beautiful, and it shows that we had a society of craftsmen and skilled workers. I look at many old wooden winding stairs, and I know that we can't build stairs like that today...
    Fiat money system; everyone is chasing government-issued money. We were born into a 'Matrix' system, and the controllers of that system aren't admitting to sh|t (despite us basically having figured out the deception), and they're concurrently closing off all the exits. And then they call us various pejoratives when we even meekly criticise them.

    The problem is that taking postman’s warning seriously would involve the painful transitions necessary to decouple entertainment from education. That’s RUclips video essayist’s only claim to respectability, the idea that they’re an insightful island in a sea of noise. They are not part of, but the literal essence of the stultifying dynamic And I think you can tell once you stop pretending that these glorified high school projects are deep. They are, at the absolute best, basic introductions to topics better pursued through reading. Which nobody really does.

    First and foremost. blessings and well wishes to you Maye..and my love as always. thoughts before reading? postman has points. i tend to lean more toward your point at 23:25 in terms of looking at this from the modern day. the world has been fucked. social media for all its "detriment" has opened up a wealth of knowledge. it takes the will to go and search for information. i also think you were right in saying we did this to ourselves. ive struggled with wondering if its our nature to relinquish power to authority, but it sure seems like we put the power of living in the hand sof the producers. do i think tv or social media ruins society? not without the intention of man to take it there. last on the subject. entertainment isnt a fault excess is. sprinkling entertainment into teaching can be super helpful and life without enjoyment is arguably not a life to live. so on that point i cant get down with postman. but i do think its healthy to take time away from it so it doesnt become all encompassing.

    Tv certainly didn't ruin society, but it didn't make it better either. Social media is vastly different than the television age, print, or radio for the following reasons:
    1. No regulation. I'm no fan of censorship, however, the gatekeepers did serve as quality control. If you wanted to become a writer you needed credentials, if you wanted to comment on a subject, you had to be well versed in what you were talking about. Today all you need is a computer and someone with idol time. The amount of misinformation online is mindboggling. To complicate things; your average young person cannot tell if what they are reading is factual or bullshit.
    2. Mind masturbation. People fill a void in their lives going online and "winning" arguments with people instead of doing the shit that sucks to make things better. They all have dreams and ambitions that they are not pursuing because they are spending 2-5 hours per day arguing online.
    3. The echo chamber. You can tell if an idea is good or not by how well it holds up under scrutiny. If there's no counter-argument telling you that eating Tide Pods may not be a good thing to do you're going to end up a bunch of people who eat tide pods. This failed insurrection we just witnessed is what happens when the echo chamber gets out of hand. It's literally dangerous.
    4. It's addictive. As bad as television was, it was never addictive. Most of the shows were garbage and we had more fun going outside or hanging with friends. Plus the television stayed at home. Social media is always with you.
    5. It's invasive. CBS, ABC, and NBC never had access to my phone contacts. They didn't know who my friends are. Where I like to spend my time. And who I'm most likely to vote for. Apple, Google, Amazon, and Facebook have your fingerprint, voice, and face stored somewhere on a computer. Most people wouldn't share this information with anyone but you willingly handed it over to a tech company so they could sell it to someone who needs to manipulate you.
    I told everyone in 2008 that Facebook was mind-controlling its users.
    Human beings did not evolve to interact with each other via computer apps.
    Mark my words: social media, AI, and advanced robotics will destabilize and erode society as we know it.
    The dystopia is here.
    Btw: I enjoyed the video.

    • @MayeMuses
      @MayeMuses  3 года назад

      That's true, because the past ten years have been like the 20th century except on steroids. I think the echo chamber started with the Limbaugh crew in the 90's, and the internet has run with it. Also, I had to delete my FB because I couldn't handle it, and it wasn't contributing enough to my life for the time it was sucking.

    Maye television is just like anything else, there is a good side and there's a bad side. You have to take everything with a grain of salt. You could say the same thing about television that you can about books it's all about what you put into it. When I was little I may have watched Transformers and GI Joe along with Jake and The Fat Man but, I also had to pick up a book every once in awhile. that along with watching Nova with my father made me a more well rounded person .My aunt was a teacher and she imparted into me the importance of a good education along with being entertained. Yes! there is garbage on television but, it is only there because you have so many garbage people running it. Just like with journalism and the Internet that will always be people who of Atlanta exist ? It is because there are those in power who do not want you to think at all. It is up to the viewer and consumer what they find to be intellectually stimulating. We became a society of being entertained way before 1985 . That is only because society is moving so fast now you have to do something to capture someone's attention! I wish it worked that way but, sometimes you have to deal with what you got . You can find just as much trash in a book as you can on television. Now with the Internet you have to seek out be intelligent material and conversation. That is one of the reasons why I was drawn to your RUclips channel!

    • @MayeMuses
      @MayeMuses  3 года назад

      Thank you! And I agree. Some books are 100% for entertainment. I would also like to test your point about the garbage people running TV soon. I have seen some execs rejecting quality content because it doesn't sell, and I've seen some just not care about accuracy. I hope those execs will be pushed out and replaced by people with higher standards but only if the public demands it.

    There's a reason the Highest paid state employees are college Football Coaches at Public Universities.
    And I disagree with your take on social media being a continuation
    Social Media is far more interactive
    Suggestive and intrusive to the Psyche ... Plus social media far more integrated into everyday function than any invention in human history...
    T.V was hypnosis

    id have to disagree on the entertaining education stint to a degree, Ive found my love of science stemmed from entertaining videos cause the way it was being taught didnt retain. I think that making it the only means may be wrong, but if you make the educational content and make it entertaining but dont invite free thought then youre playing a dangerous game.
