- I seem to be getting plenty of comments regarding chime whistles on one of my other uploads. So I thought I would put together a short film dedicated to the sounds of the LNER A4 chime whistle.
For info the LNER A4's just have the chime whistle. The LNER A1 (Tornado) as both an A1 & an A4 chime whistle. They can use either independently or at the same time. Thats why it does not always sound the same.
The steam trains in the clip are as detailed below :-
LNER A4 no. 60019 Bittern, also seen as 4492 Dominion of New Zealand.
LNER A4 no. 60007 Sir Nigel Gresley
LNER A1 no. 60163 Tornado
Footage taken at various locations over the last few years. Авто/Мото
For you musicians, I've just read that the A4 whistle is in fact a second inversion minor chord of F( C, F , Aflat) which gives it that mournful tone.
Music to me ears. That's one of the nicest sounds ever
Beautiful!!! nothing beats an A4 whistle!
Um Hills Steam the real number of Bittern is 4464
@@marleyrios1573 bruh YOU CAN OBVIOUSLY SEE THAT IT WAS DISGUISED AS 4492 back then.
Gresley's 3 chimes sound great!
RockyRailroad Productions That's because they're made by the one and only Crosby Company!
So that's why they sound familiar....
RockyRailroad Productions Yeah... I wonder what the notes are... Something I shall google...
They're 2 chimes, believe it or not
trainz 4460 productions they are not.
1:00 I've only just noticed that the class 91 horn sounds just like the A4 chime. Suppose it's a sort of homage to them.
Absolutely breath-taking
this same whistle from one of the original 4 A4's is now on a WHR Beyer Garratt and it fits the engine so well, especially in the mountain valleys
Thanks......fabulous sounds. Seasick Steve eat your heart out!
Tornado's chime was originally fitted to A4 Loco "Golden Eagle" (1937) scrapped in 1968.
Really?
@@lionelsugyarta107 yup
How did you know this whistle that fitted with Tornado?
@@lionelsugyarta107 they have the article about Tornado
@@xjxnebxg then where are the articles?
1:00 lol that modern train honked twice and got a responce from bittern
0:20 it actually sounds like a LNER A4 3 Chime
Amazing! Love the sound so much ahhh. Also, im very curious as to why Tornado has 2 whistles. The chime whistle and that tiny one located on the front right side of the cab. Please explain?
That on the FS of the cab is the standard LNER "pepperpot" whistle.
Thanks for that!
Yaaaaaa 4492 Dominion of New Zealand
Very nice chime on Tornado. Would I be allowed to use this for a model I'm building? I'll be sure to credit you.

I wish I can go to England and Scotland to see the true reality of the locomotives
0:21 GORDON RWS WHISTLE
For some reason apple green is my favorite color
What has happened to the Tornado chime whistle these days?
60019 is Bittern i know because its another member of the a4 my brother likes
YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSH
They sound really close ones a bit deeper than the other
Why not No. 60163 Tornado painted in the accurate LNER Apple Green, but with the letters “L N E R” on its tender, and numbered 163 on the cab sides instead of its British Railways Brunswick Green and Blue Liveries?
Peppercorn A1s and A2s were built after the nationalization
@@xjxnebxg but we don’t always follow the tradition of the original locomotives right?
@@lionelsugyarta107 some loco designs of Big Four were built but BR stop doing that and built their own locos with the designs from LMS (unbelievable right?)
@@xjxnebxg Can you please explain more detail? I didn’t catch it
@@lionelsugyarta107 okay when it was formed with Southern Railways (SR), Great Western Railway (GWR), London, Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS) and London and Northern Eastern Railway (LNER) and after the nationalization after WW2, they used the LMS designs and make their own changes like for example LMS Ivatt 2MT and BR Standard 2MT and you can tell the difference between the LMS and BR designs.
Tornado's whistle came from a Scrapped A4 locomotive?
came from no. 4482 Golden Eagle
Interesting that an A4 whistle mounted on an A1 doesn't sound as nice as when on an A4.
Do you guys know Sir Haydn? Tornados whistle sounds like Sir Haydn’s whistle.
the whistle Tornado has is from LNER A4 Golden Eagle
Sir Haydn comes from LNER #4463
0:47 what Engine is that?
That's LNER Class A4 4464 / 60019 Bittern dressed up as 4492 Dominion of New Zealand
Do you mean “Masquerading as…”?
LNER 4492/4464
#4464 "Bittern" as #60019/#4492 "Dominion of New Zealand"
Okay So Terrier55Stepney Did The Flying Scotsman Vs Tornado In 2017 And Do Mallard Vs BIttern In 2018
And Do E2 Tank Vs Class 2P in 2019 And The Final Do The Black 5 Vs Fowler 4F In 2020
why does the UK have high pitched train whistles
listenable to the ear
0:35 sounds like the Hogwarts Express!!
Because thats the whistle they used for the hogwarts express
No. The Hogwarts Express' Whistle comes from #70000 Britannia
thats. malarge. whisle
What
That’s not Mallards whistle
Scotsman needs one of these badly. That incessant screecher has to go. A chime whistle would give it a sense of strength and importance, while the plain-bell whistle that it uses gives it the aura of an annoyance.
J.R 2000 MUSIC TO ME EARS THAT ONE OF THE NICEST SOUNDS EVER NOPE A4 CHEMISTRY ⚗️
