- Popular Twitch Streamer, Sketch was recently outed as a former gay adult content creator by a video essay called "The Real Sketch: The Untold Story of Jamie Mar". To me, the video had the clear cut goal of shaming the popular creator, but the video did not get the response they were expecting.

The ""journalist"" was delivering this story as if it was a true crime case where a guy murdered his entire family and then ate them. Like, dude, a random twitch streamer doing gay porn is not worth reporting on as a journalist unless you work for a tabloid.
Tbf regular journalism is pretty close to this sensationalizing as if a nuke as been dropped for every story even if it doesn't actually matter.

There was this hit piece written a while ago about Brandon Sanderson, the fantasy author. I guess because he's Mormon, they thought they could "expose" him, but turns out that he's just kind of a normal guy. It ends with the journalist having a mental breakdown as the Sanderson family watches like an X-Men movie or something.

ironically i feel like him being in that very bro-ey space that absolutely adores him will change a lot of those minds abt queer people. if u look at stories of homophobic people, ull see that often the *one* thing that changes their mind is seeing someone they love coming out in this community. it humanizes us, makes them realize we’re just like anyone else. It breaks my heart what happened to sketch, but i’m trying to hold on to the one positive thing that may come out of this.
Yeah I have similar feelings about Mr Beast and how aggressively he defends his trans friend and how he treats her like he always has. He has a huge influence on young people, and I just genuinely think that they'll see his behavior and try to emulate it instead of getting brainwashed into hating trans people like so many generations before them
I just wish he had half the balls Sketch does, and maybe asked to interview him, or even email him a heads up that he was running with the story, and given him even a shred of a chance to be the one to come out on his own, before it ran. The amount of "journalistic integrity" that was thrown out the window in putting this out there, is deafening.

Not to be that person but Eva faces 10x more backlash than sketch ever did (and still does). I really feel like sketch was only given that grace, bc he is a man that presents mostly masculine. Sometimes their acceptance only reaches out towards a certain type of person, if sketch were trans, a feminine dude, or anything outside of the heteronormative understanding he would not be as much accepted as he is now, but ig it’s good for him. Hopefully in the future he embraces being openly gay.

Ok so I hate being that guy but both Ancient Rome and Greece were both not really tolerant of same sex relationships in the way we are. They only tolerated them on the basis of men of higher social status (or age for the Greeks but being older usually meant higher social status but I digress) being dominant over men of lower status because to their societies, men of lower status were basically the equivalent to women since women were automatically considered lower status. They were not tolerant of same sex relationships on equal footing, and definitely not supportive of men of higher status being submissive to men of lower status. They also weren’t accepting of same sex relationships for women pretty much at all but your original comment specifies male relationships so I digress. Basically, they only tolerated homosexuality like how a lot of straight bros try to tolerate/excuse the idea of liking/having sex with femboys by saying they aren’t gay and other weird mental gymnastics. Which is to say, they didn’t really tolerate homosexuality at all but merely equated submissive men to the same role and position of women.

When Sketch said “I’d rather you know my flaws” and when you mentioned elements of expressing your own sexuality throughout the video, I think another issue at hand is how sexiness is thought of in heteronormative spaces, especially for men. Like, I and I’m sure many other men have never thought of themselves as sexy, let alone handsome. While certainly an element of self care is involved, the general lack of accepting one’s own attractive male beauty might be hampering the sexual development and communication skills of young men who have to hide or who simply never get to express their ideas of sexiness of/for themselves because of culture, society, etc. Then, in the case of having to start doing so through very public sex work where one’s sexual expression is tied to monetary (and algorithmic) success, then I imagine men regardless of sexuality may be disinclined to experience their sexuality in healthy ways.
Any men who see themselves as attractive are described as "pretty boys" and "lightskin behavior" to shame them and make them feel less masculine
Well not only that but the only image sold to most guys as an avenue of attractiveness is conforming to a traditionally masculine archetype. It can vary from culture to culture but this restrictive view can often actually come in conflict with the reality of what a lot of women are actually attracted to, which makes this advice to cishet boys only all the more counterproductive.
Personally I suspect that it's just another avenue of control. If boys can't understand themselves as having any appeal outside of restrictive masculinity they'll try to force themselves into those roles, and then when they do that and don't find success more is demanded from them in return.
I totally agree with what you said regarding men's understanding of their own appeal. My boyfriend of 14 years still to this day doesn't take well to my compliments about what I find attractive in him. It feels like he truly doesn't believe me when I tell him that he sexy or desirable. He is 5 11" and 145 lbs. So he thinks he's too skinny to be traditionally attractive as a man, which couldn't be further from the truth. I've tried to express my true feelings about this over the years in every way possible to no avail, unfortunately. I feel like as a woman, it takes quite a few years, if not a damn decade, to become comfortable in your own skin and to embrace your individual sexiness. But once you come to that understanding within yourself, it's very freeing and liberating. I feel like my boyfriend will never come to feel that way about his own attractiveness, and it's very frustrating. I, at the bare minimum, want him to feel comfortable in his own skin and, at best, be confident in his own self-image and see himself the way I do.
