Thank you! I have the second type, a Kohler, and thanks to this video, taking it apart was a snap. When I removed the linkage from the overflow pipe, a mass of hair came out tangled in the spring/weight at the end. Agonizingly slow drain is no longer that way.
Thank you I look for about an hour till I found your video very informative told me exactly what I needed to see I thought the linkage is broken and I was going to have to try to call a plumber but I was able to get it out just kept working at it previous owner put in a PVC plastic POS I just had a lot of built-up fraud in the tube thanks again excellent video
Great info. When i took faceplate off bc lever was useless, found linkage broken off from lever part. Cant get to it. Idk what to try next. Can u help? Thanks.
Me too. He says you need to look down there with a dental mirror, flaslight, to see where it is. And fashion a wire hook to try to fish it out with..🤪Please let me kniw if you were able to fix your drain, and how you did it!
I have the second type of drain and for the life of me I can’t work the stopper mechanism back in the drain. Is there a trick to that? Taking apart was easy. Can’t seem to work the stopper back into the drain though.
@@cptpapa no. We just put in a new drain cover that you can push down to stop the flow and fill the tub. It works but does create more issues with hair clogs it seems.
Same. Came here to lo0ok for answer. I'm going to very gently pry with a thin blade like a butter knife. I'm not leaving it for a plumber because I''m afraid he'll scratch my brushed nickel finish. After I pry it (if I can), I will clean if corroded. Then I will have the plumber fix the spring and linkage when he's here to replace PBU and mixing cap of shower faucet. I just want to look first and clean in case it's gross or the lever needs to be soaked in 50% vinegar/50% water. I like to do preparation for plumber if he'll be working on anything with a finish. So if he starts prying or not using strap wrench I can ask him to watch out for the finish.
Have a standard double kitchen sink. Those basket-with-rubber stoppers/washers hardly work when new, much less when the rubber gets stiff with age. Cure? The drain of one goes to the drain from the other via gently sloped pipe, then down through the trap and to the back wall, then down to the main drain. It's the very devil to get the pipes just the right length, get them to hold together - especially when someone crams a too-high bottle of soap or something under there and knocks it lose. A "Real" plumber actually made it worse. Cure? Or which issue of FH has the answers? Thanks!
I have the firs type of plug and I removed it completely. But the water still drains very slowly. I even tried pouring dryno, baking soda vinegar combo, etc and it's still the same. Any ways I can get it to drain quicker? Thanks!
I removed my brass hooked stopper and my drain pipes are all new in my basement, and my tub still drains slow, so I'm replacing all the pipes shown in this video to plastic.
My stopper is not connected to anything after a new install. I have to blindly use a hooked hanger lol Guess I have to buy a mirror if tub fishing doesn't work.
@@bonniemittleman6963 I ended up having to disassemble mine and use a lot of CLR and WD-40. Then I was able to tap the exposed part of the basket from the pipe with a board over it and hammer, and loosened it. Good luck.
@@cptpapa Yeah, I have poured a ton of descaler into it and it isn't budging. I've completely removed the outer assembly and the adjustment piece, I have just the stem. I'll have to continue to soak in chemicals I guess, not way now to get it out short of removing the tub! If I ever get this out. I will not go back with this sort of assembly! Haven't tried wd-40. Ill have to try that too. I'm just a determined grandma, not a plumber :(
@@bonniemittleman6963 I was not able to get it to release just by pouring the CLR I had to disassemble it and tap on it. Are you able to get under the or in front of the tube to remove drains to work on it a little bit closer?
@@cptpapa I have no access to it other than from the top. I have not been able to get the drain cover off the floor of the tub either. It is a screen without a screw in the center. It seem glued on. I'm headed to hardware store to find an appropriate drain puller, (it isn't just the + shape screen, its actually a flush screen with a pattern of little circles holes, like an actual screen. Sorry, I don't know the technical names of things! I have no access behind the tub without major damage either.. I'm really ready to remove the entire tub and put in a shower!
I had the first type of drain get plugged. After removing the stopper assembly I found an 8" mass of hair. Well, THERE's your problem. Blame my long haired daughter.

Same! Er, with the kohler. I believe the official product name is the “tea-for-two”. I haven’t taken it apart yet. That happens tomorrow!
THANKS!!
You just prevented me from having a panic attack! I was picturing having to gut my wall behind my tub!!
Thank you! I could not understand how that coil was supposed to work. This video really helped me.
This helped solve my problems! I didn’t know if the lever went inside the spring or what. This really helped me today! Thank you!

You are a king, my friend. The issue was clear to me within the first minute.
We have a Gerber drain with a similar setup. Solved an issue we’ve been dealing with for months. Thanks!
Thx! U just gave this 65 yo single woman the courage to pull the plug & it worked!
Only video that shows an out of bathtub views! Great video
This was amazing and helped me think of what else could be wrong with my tub
Just what I need, thanks a lot. I was wondering about the rod adjustment. Now I can get my plumbers license...that is only certified for my house.
Great video! Thanks for the useful demonstrations.🙂

Very helpful, exactly what I needed to see to make adjustments to my drain.
Love your video..simplicity...
Ok what if you don’t have either of these type drains?
Your lucky, I hate both of those styles. Best to have just the opening at the overflow and use a push button stopper.
Thank you. This really helped me.

Any tips on getting the trip lever out of the overflow pipe? I have one stuck in corrosion or hard water build up that I cant get out.
Did you ever get it un-stuck? What did you do?

Try removing bottom drain. The brass fitting. Then Check inside for obstruction.

What does one do if the drain basket/barrel is stuck and won’t move?

Those are my favorite overflows except for the lift and turn drains
My drain stopped cylinder is stuck in the drain and will come out when I pull

My tub would never hold water with the first type of stopper so i took of the cleanout lid and found that the trip lever wasn’t attached to anything!
