  • 😲Orthodox Jews Can’t Start Shabbat Without these 14 Surprising Things Shabbat Prohibitions
    #shabbat #jewish #orthodox
Today I will be answering so many of your Shabbat questions about how Orthodox families keep Shabbat. There are 39 categories of prohibitions on Shabbat which are derived from activities which were required in the setting up and maintenance of the the Tabernacle or Mishkan. I have attached a link to help explain: www.chabad.org/library/articl...
-How do Orthodox Jews heat up food for Shabbat?
-Can Orthodox Jews rip Toilet paper and paper towels for Shabbat?
-Preparing Plastic wrap, parchment paper and foil for Shabbat use
-Do Orthodox Jews keep Shabbat in the dark?
-Preparing the oven for Shabbat use
-Do Orthodox families not have Heat/AC on Shabbat?
-How do Shabbat Observant families have Hot water on Shabbat?
-Preparing the Fridge for Shabbat Use
-Preparing bedrooms and guest rooms for Shabbat
How do Orthodox Women Light Shabbat Candles?
-What is the Shabbat Candle Blessing?
    Barukh ata Ado-nai El-oheinu, Melekh ha'olam, asher kid'shanu b'mitzvotav v'tzivanu l'hadlik ner shel Shabbat
Blessed are You, LORD our God, King of the universe, Who has sanctified us with His commandments and commanded us to light the Shabbat candle.
Which surprised you the most? Let me know in the comments below.
Although everything that I am saying today may seem restrictive, Orthodox Jewish families, and others who celebrate Shabbat, count down the days of the week to welcome and celebrate this holy day. It’s a time where families come together and the noise of the world quiets for 25 hours. It’s a time spent building relationships and strengthening bonds where God is at the forefront.
I have recently filmed a video sharing a sneak peek into what Shabbat is really like in our family. I take you from the moment I light my candles until Shabbat is over. You can watch the full video here:

I live in Israel and have a solution for the problem of using a roll of plastic wrap on Shabbat. Available in all the supermarkets here are "shower caps" which come in a box of 20 and stretch over bowls and platters. If you can find shower caps in the dollar store you could use them.

I am a practicing Christian and these videos of Jewish celebrations (especially Shabbath) makes me think I should really try to start keeping Shabbath with my family. Many Christians have forgotten the value of Shabbath or never really understood it. Also other celebrations seem wonderful.

I am Jewish but not religious. When my parents were alive, we did celebrate rosh Hashanah Yom Kippur, Passover, and Hanukkah I still do as a single mom but not as much as I should. I love watching you and your family prepare for the holidays and Shabbat. There’s a lot that I do know, but there was a lot that I did not know so Thank you Sonya so much for your videos. I look forward to them. Gd bless you and your family.

I am a Christian, and I believe, according to scripture, that the Sabbath Day is a REST unto the LORD and that it is a universal principle for all people!
As a result, I would love to be more devout in keeping it, even though unfortunately, it is not taught in our church!
But for me, I have often denoted Sundays as a DAY of REST unto the LORD, when I am not working

Sonja, as with the other non-Jewish posters here, I must give you props for sharing such intimate moments with us, the unknown folk, of your family, your household, your marriage, your faith, and your culture.
You, and yours are truly inspirational and educational.
Thank you for always including links in your description. I’ve learned a lot today about the “why” behind the “how” you keep the sabbath holy.
Of note: the not tearing toilet paper was the most surprising to me, but after following links and doing my own research, I actually got it.

Great video & love your channel. While I'm not Jewish I watch all your content to give me ideas for Sabbath as a Seventh Day Adventist. I agree it is hard for most people to understand the concepts of rest, not working or using forms energy or how we eat...most see it as restrictive. I've been celebrating Sabbath since birth so at 44 y/o this is all I know🥰 Rarely make comments but wanted to let you know the diverse group of subscribers you have. I have said it many times in my comments on your videos but I have to say it with hige emphasis, YOU as the woman of the house are AMAZING in all that you do! Some of what you do reminds me of how Sundays were when I was growing up. All stores closed on Sunday so of you didn't have it Saturday by 5 or 6, you were without it til Monday! All families back in my day (mid to late 50s and into the early 60s) would have all house work done in and out the house because Sunday was a day of rest! My mom had all the shopping done, and a slow roast or stew was in a low oven early sides were generally cooked with the roast or the night before! No tv for most of the day! Just the radio tuned into a sermon, The Lutheran Hour and then soft music of the day. It was church, then come home and my mom and all was heated for family that came over. Good china, cut crystal and the special silverware came out! There was no going out to play with friends on Sunday!!
It was definitely a more peaceful way to end the weekend and start the work/school week and it sad how far we have strayed from it. Your home and traditions are lovely and I so enjoy watching it and learning!

Honestly, growing up in a time when stores (even groceries) were closed on Sunday was another aspect that made Shabbat observance more difficult, because it meant that both days off were restricted in what could be done. Nowadays, I can plan all my errands for Sunday, the one day I have free to do things. (I generally plan my week, my meals, get groceries, go to my off-site storage, go to the pharmacy, etc.)

Thanks for sharing, Starting this coming Shabbat I will be lighting my candles and saying prayers to bring in Shabbat rest before I head out to service... Wow! I knew about all the other preparations for Shabbat you explained except for the wringing of the sponge. It is so hard to keep shabbat as a single person who converted. It is so beautiful though. Thank you for sharing.

As a kid we didn't know that either.. the Shabbos sponge came out about 8-10 years ago. Before that, some people used plastic bags. This is much better!

Thank you Sonya for giving me an insight into these prohibitions. It is not difficult to understand why Shabbat is so important, whilst I am non-religious I can almost envy the peace and togetherness you create weekly by observing so strictly the guidelines of your faith. I shall work my way through your videos as they are really interesting. I wish you and yours a tranquil Shabbat.
