I watched Bobby sing this beautiful song on the Andy Williams show in 1965. I'm 73 yrs and never get tired listening to him sing this song. He owns this song. Pure raw talent! He sang this in front of his parents. He was very nervous. What a voice! RIP Bobby. We miss you! ❤❤❤

Once you have heard Bobby Hatfield perform this beautiful song, you realize there is NO ONE ELSE who can match him. He has it all--the voice, emotion and he puts his heart into it. You should check out more of his solos--you will be amazed at the different aspects of this great artist. Cathy

Yes, it's Bobby's solo. Bill does solo's too!! Some while they were together some when they were separate adventures!! Bobby's solo here was done live on the Andy Williams show!! He is a true genius!! And Bill was there. When Mr. Williams, a singer himself, comes out with Bill Andy first looks starstruck, claps & then shakes Bobby's hand!! Andy said "Beautiful, just Beautiful!!!!" Yeah it's Bobby's song forever!! And Bill does a great job on "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow"!!! Usually sang by a female Bill does it super!! These two men were The Dynamic Duo then & still today!!!! Pass them along!!! They deserve to be remembered as long as man is on this Earth!! ❤️🌹💞🥰

I am 81 and remember quite a few singers doing this but Bobby's tops them all. I was heading to Viet Nam when his version can out. I can feel the loneliness in every word. Bill and Bobby always did one solo on each of there albums and while on tour. They both wanted to do Unchained, so they flipped a coin. The music was written as the theme for the little-known prison film “Unchained” (January 1955), hence the song title. Todd Duncan sang the vocals for the film soundtrack. It has since become a standard and one of the most recorded songs of the 20th century, most notably by the Righteous Brothers. The movie “Unchained” is about a man in prison and longing for his wife and children. Hoping his wife will still be there when he gets out. So you can now understand the meaning of the song. The movie was not very good, or so my friends told me. But we were all teenagers so what did we now. Several artists sang it and it made the billboard top 100. But no one can come close to Bobby Hatfield’s version. Bobby’s version hit the top ten chart. And did it again when it was used in the movie “Ghost” It has since become a standard and one of the most recorded songs of the 20th century, most notably by Bobby. According to the song's publishing administrator, over 1,500 recordings of "Unchained Melody" have been made by more than 670 artists, in multiple languages.

Usually live performances are just not quite as good as the recorded version but I think on this song, the live performance is way BETTER than the recorded version because that super high note Bobby hits at the end of this performance is not there in the recorded version. Having heard this live performance, now when I hear the recorded version I feel like I have been cheated.
I doubt seriously that the audience was told to just sit there and don't move. The way this audience reacted to this ballad is pretty much the way audiences of that time period always reacted to ballads. Their primary concern was that they be able to hear and ABSORB every beautiful word. I live in Nashville and I had the opportunity to attend many tapings of musical shows for television in the mid-60's through the late 70's and I cannot recall a single time that we had to be told to "sit still". We just did. This is partly because we didn't want to miss a single note and partly because we felt it showed respect for the person who was up there performing.
You didn't mention the color of Bobby's suit but this was in the time when color TV was brand new and some shows were in the new-fangled color and some shows were still black and white. In fact, some songs by The Righteous Brothers, "You've Lost that Loving Feeling" for one, are in black and white. Because many shows were still in black and white when someone was given the opportunity to perform in color he chose a color as far removed from black and white as he could get. I think you'll agree that Bobby's pink jacket was pretty far removed from black and white!

The Brothers each did a solo song on their albums. This was Bobby's. This live version is quite different from the recorded one. This one is superior to the record. In fact this one is considered by most to be the greatest live performance of all time! I certainly agree. Bobby was just the BEST!

Bobby Hatfield had already perfected this song when he was with a previous group. They both had songs they did well solo, and suited their vocal skills and sty;es. Bill Medley's version of 'Georgia on My Mind' is a fine example of his solo efforts.

They decided on every album they each would have a solo and they would also sing a gospel song. They always did this. You need to check out Bobby Hatfield live performance in 1965 of "Summertime". He will blow your mind with his soulful vocals.

Your analysis is right on when mentioning the movement of his jaw to create the sound and I might add that Bobby Hatfield had 2 years of voice training and it paid off. Great countertenor reaching from low to the High c or F#, anyway onto another octave. Saw this version on television during the time and it was the thing of respect and also the way things were when soloists came on a set with a sedate audience. Listen to his SUMMERTIME. And also Bill Medley, the other brother who does a duet with a female vocalist in IVE HAD THE TIME OF MY LIFE from DIRTY DANCING. Great team with Bill Medley as baritone. Bravo

Fun reaction to this masterpiece. The other brother was just offstage with host Andy Williams during this song's performance. The Brothers did two other songs on that show; first they did "Look at Me" as a duo, then Bobby's "Unchained Melody"; the third was a fun, improvised Ray Charles' "What'd I Say" with Andy. Both of those songs are also on YT and well worth watching! This clip of UM has the intro to the song, putting it in context: ruclips.net/video/FZZqf3AVJbE/видео.html

Those are not falsetto but high soprano tenor that he was able to achieve effortlessly due to his 4 octave vocal range, falsetto is when you have to force your vocals to do something that doesn't come naturally to you,its more of an effect,The BeeGees were famous for using this vocal trick.

I to sang this to my wife at our wedding in 1983, as we danced to it with our oldest (but at the time 18 months) child. She, however she said I murdered it. I'm guessing it's not a song for a baritone, she told me I was of better sticking to my drumming. I thought it was an appropriate song as I was in the Royal Marine Commandos, I had returned from the war for the Falkland Islands when I proposed, and now was shipping out to Sierra Leone two days later, so much for my attempt at being romantic. On the upside she liked me in my Dress Uniform, and having my comrades forming the sword tunnel helped.
I must have done something write because we're still together and she still puts up with my singing. With 4 children and 7 grandchildren, we got busy on 3 of our baby's when I was home, we adopted the young afghan woman and her 2 daughters at the end of 2015 after they saved my life in Afghanistan (a story for another time), and we are so much better for having them, we love all our family and that is our strength. I served my Queen and Country for 34 years in the Royal Marine Commandos and later in the British Special Forces, and then 2 years in hospital, and she stuck by me even though I'm mainly wheelchair bound now. We do actually have a song by Queen called "Your Me Best Friend", a very apt song as she has been my best friend since we were both 15.

He's doing it solo because it was HIS solo. The coin toss was a bit of a joke (if there ever was one, it wasn't right before the show); so was the fact that Bill passed because he didn't think it would be a hit - he played that up, pouting, to make make the audience laugh. It's true that neither of them expected it to be the giant hit it became, but Bobby always loved the song and Bill readily admitted it was made for him.

Alex North wrote Unchained Melody in 1955 , Lyrics by Hy Zaret.. Bill Medley had nothing to do with writing or producing it.. you really should get the facts straight before making comments that couldn't be further from the truth.

    • @gibsongirl2100

Bill did produce the studio version of "Unchained Melody". Phil Spector had no interest in producing that song, claiming he wanted to focus on the album and had no time for singles. He was pushing "Hung on You", which was the A-side of the single. Unchained was released as the B-side, and, according to those involved, was furious when DJs preferred playing "Unchained". It became a big hit and Spector took credit for it later (being that it was on the album Spector produced).

This is a pretty documented comprehensive detail of the history of the song's production. www.patreon.com/posts/on-this-day-in-28327782 Just because they didn't mention the coin toss on the Andy William's show doesn't mean it didn't happen. Bill was probably just shrugging it off. Do take your own advice. Bill did produce the song and played the piano part.

    • @gibsongirl2100
      @gibsongirl2100 3 года назад +2

@@jamma2916 Bill said in an interview (years later) that he "thinks" that they might have tossed a coin on that one. He and Bucky Heard did a coin toss over the song, they claimed, in an interview several years ago. Bill's recollections and retellings seem to change over time - not saying he's deliberately doing it; I just think he says a lot "off-the-cuff" and tongue in cheek. I just find it hard to believe that there was a coin toss at any time over this song, since I read that it was Bobby who had always loved the song and brought it to Phil and Bill, saying he wanted to record it.
