Okay Alex, - Here's the Deal. I loved your video and I watched the whole thing. Now, I am almost 80 years old and have tented an had adventures my entire life. When I was a kid, I went to South America from Pennsylvania on a motorcycle and slept in a tent 75% of the year that I was gone. I had the same 2 man tent that Hillary took to Mount Everest with me on that trip, - a Eureka 2-man (draw tight) self supporting tent with a top fly that reached the ground. All tents leak, but here's what I did. All cloth or canvas seams get coated with bee's wax and all plastic or nylon seams get coated with an actual flexible sealer made for that purpose. Once I learned to do that, I NEVER had a tent leak EVER! So, that's my story and I'm simply telling you what I did. You did a fantastic job on your video!! Best wishes, John Neubauer

Many thanks John, glad you enjoyed the video.
Your adventure in South America must have been amazing…
When I was growing we had a Hillary tent as well, only ours was a large and heavy 2 room family style one. I know the brand quite well. If I recall they were quite the cream of the crop back in the day.
Thank you for the recommendations. I appreciate it.
      All the best, Alex.

Hi Alex, your certainly captured the atmosphere of being in a tent when it rains. Some good footage. Considering the amount of rain you experienced I think the tent did quite well. But I'm sure you have sorted it out now. Take care Grant.

Thanks Grant! This was the video I told you about where I had to cut out a lot of footage because the sound was pretty lousy. The rain was so strong at times that you could barely make out what I was saying (probably a good thing, lol).
I think I have the tent dialed in now. I’ve re-sealed the seams front and back and seemed to do well in the last small storm we had…
      Cheers buddy!

I have a Tarptent stratosphere, purchased their seam seal package, set it up in the yard and turned on the sprinklers - it leaked. Not at the seams, but in a flat section which looked like it had been stretched or something. Used a spray on sealant, but really looking forward to purchasing a higher quality and yes, heavier duty tent. I'll probably go with Helleberg, even after seeing two users in storms that leaked at the zipper on the fly.
I always carry a tarp and if I know bad weather is near, I pitch the tent under the tarp.

That’s unfortunate for your Stratospire. I’ve heard from other Tarptent users having issues with leaking after ordering their tents sealed from the factory.
I’ve have leaking with my Allak 2, but it was due to wind driven rain getting under the cap, onto the zips and vent fabric. Other than that, it’s a great tent. I’m testing out my Niak this week in a pretty decent storm moving through California. Cheers

It is nice to camp like that and bring a bottle of wine. LOL! Not to mention a few other luxuries! I recently bought a truck with plans to do some off-reading. The first trip will be Death Valley in early April. I have a four season tent (Nemo Tenshi 2P). I have only used it once for snow camping and didn’t get any precipitation. Wondering if I need to seal the seams on it for good measure. It would have been interesting to see how your tent would hold up in some heavy wind. Hope you got it sealed well! Great video!

Hey Maryann! Many thanks and nice hearing from you!
I think I have the seams dialed in now. We shall see in the next big storm, lol.
I would guess your Nemo already comes seam sealed. I like the design of the Tenshi. It looks very bomber…
Best of luck on your off roading trip. I just came back from one of those yesterday. I found an amazing place to camp up in the hills on the Big Sur coast. I’ll be posting that video in a week or two after I get a chance to edit it.
      Cheers!

Many thanks, I appreciate the feedback… It was a lot longer actually, but unfortunately the sound wasn’t the best of quality because the rain was very hard at times and the microphone and the camera close to the tent’s fly.
      Cheers!

I had just got my new tarptent double rainbow dw a couple months ago. I got their seam seal service. I tried it in a couple decent rain sessions each giving a couple inches of rain. It still leaked in certain areas. Nothing horrible but I bought their seam sealing kit as well just in case. Like you said, it is therapudic haha. I ended up re-sealing the whole tent just to be safe and take extra care of the attachment points because that seemed to be the weak point. They give a generous amount I was able to go over the tent twice. After a storm rolled in giving around 6 inches of rain and up to 50mph gusts, It was bone dry inside and flexed like crazy but it survived easily. I guess point is, test field your gear like you did. Love the tarptent tents!

Hi Travis, that’s good to know. I now have a total of three coats front and back on mine. I tested out the Scarp 1 again in our last downpour and seems to be holding up, although it wasn’t in a significant storm… Keeping my fingers crossed, lol.
      All the best!

Love being in a tent all snug and dry listening to the sound of the rain. Not so great having to pitch and pack up in it though.

I couldn’t agree more. Packing up a wet tent isn’t fun, especially if it needs to go in a backpack.
