I'm not a huge fan of a tip up design. One mistake or one stake getting loose in windy conditions and you're likely to puncture the flysheet. Even if this is a great tent, I'm not sure it can safely sustain that kind of wind anyway.

Nice video, at first i doubted this would be a relevant video. If you pack a Niak it's because it's a light tent with a small footprint, easy to find a sheltered spot for,...if you take a Niak you are not expecting big storms in the area at that time a year, you are not bringing extra poles or pegs on those travels,.. you are probably the lucky guy with a tent, not just some bivyback or hammock and a tarp,.. If you really can't find a sheltered spot you are going to sit up in the tent during the whole storm, supporting the poles and hoping the fly doesn't tear, the pegs hold,.... it's a risk you take while packing or even buying a tent for a trip,... While you are hoping your Niak holds during a storm a lot of lightweight tents will collapse, tear up, even without flying debris, a lot of poles will snap, a lot of tents will leak in a way that closing the inner tent will not solve,... On the other side there will be people in a decent 4 season tent like the soulo or in a dedicated storm tent with much more staking options that sleep like nothing is happening but they carry a 2.7kg tent instead of a 1.7 kg tent,... If you are car camping with a Niak without youtube obligations you can use the car to shelter your pitch or just sleep inside the car. But then I remembered that there are a lot of people with lots of money but no camping experience. People that would buy the most expensive tent in the store without any idea about black, red or yellow label and pitch it a the place with the most stunning view unaware of the weather,...

You might want to look at the KUIU Storm Star. Very strong and water tight! Cheers !

The Hilleberg Niak is a lightweight, quick pitch, roomy shelter for a mobile traveller. Think hiker/cyclist. It is easily beefed up with 10mm poles, 3mm cord and seam sealing. The experienced traveller pitches to minimise the effects of poor weather.

I believe that any tent, regardless of its brand, is likely to leak in harsh weather. The intense winds can force water into the stitching, making it crucial to ensure those seams are sealed.

Great looking hiking tent. I've only got experience with free standing tents but I'm more and more looking at these kind. Put a plastic cola bottle cap inside your pegs bag, very useful to put pressure on the peg without hurting your hand.

Great video, brilliant content. . Saw the last one when you tried to put your tent up in incredible conditions. Top effort. I recently bought the Dipole 1 DW, and I think it's one of my fav tents.. Really underrated and not a lot of exposure compared to many other similar tents iMO.

Hey man, great video as usual. I'm about to do a thru-hike in Picos de Europa (spain) in about a week. I have the same tent and I recently did the seam sealing (crossing my fingers I did it correctly). I was wondering what kind of cord did you get for the side pegs. I'll probably need to get some cord attachment to make sure my tent doesnt fold under bad weather conditions. Love the fact you used it under some rain. Can't wait to finally put it to test. Cheers.

Seam seal, seam seal, seam seal. All sil-nylon tents need seam sealing, unlike polyester ones. Even if the manufacturer says there's no need.

Great video! I love the tarp setup. Looks almost like it was designed for this tent, even color matched! I've had the red Hilleberg Niak for about a year and love it so far. I have a slightly larger and much cheaper tarp I think I will give this a try with when car camping. If it works out well I might invest in something more lightweight for backpacking in inclement weather. Curious what rain gear you have, and how you felt it held up? I know you said you should have kept your rain pants on, so I assume you had them on when setting up the tent/tarp, and I see your jacket is a Saloman, but what model? Thanks in advance!

Hi Alex. Great to see you back out. Lovely video. That tent looks a solid option for sure. You should try a nyloflume pack liner. Cheap, ultra light, waterproof and tough for what it is. Keeps everything in pack dry and no need for a cover. 👍

pegs are usually the ones to go on a trekking pole tent. i've got those 9 inch pegs for this exact reason when i go out in the scottish hills

this is great! wish dark /grey dcf was in here also, grey dcf 0.8 vs the camo 0.67 that would be cool! currently looking at a bonfus tent, and i'm undecided between camo or the grey dcf ( the grey is for sure more robust since it's heavier/ thicker so it will also be better in heavy weather) will also be darker then the spruce green, but i don't think it would beat the camo in see trough capability

This pack is a piece of junk. Life lesson. When you are asked to buy a car without test driving there is a reason. Zpack does just that with their packs. We spent $1,000 for two packs that would not carry any weight. To add to the problem every time we called Zpack they came back with a different lie of the weight it will carry. The response was always in ratio to what weight we said we were carrying. When we said we had 25 lbs we were told it would carry 30. When we said 30 in a different call they said 35. This pack would be nothing more than a very expensive day pack. We hiked the whole AT and saw one other Zpack. When we saw that young land again, she had traded hers in for another pack. PLEASE DO NOT BE SUCKED IN BY THE FAKE VIDEOS THAT ZPACK PUTS ON RUclips. These not unbiased reviews. If you see a video that just praises this bag and sounds like an infomercial, I will guarantee that is exactly what it is.

Hi. Many thanks for your video. I really liked it. I have a Niak myself, (with only mesh inner, for pure sommer use in kind conditions), but never tested in such conditions. I guess seam sealing is smart for such conditions for a yelllow label. I also have a Allak 2 used in similar weather with no leaks. I also have a Keron 3 GT used in "all weather Norway can produce". After about 300 nights it start to leak in the air vents and seam sealer was needed to "get it back as new". That was mainly my own fault. It is very easy to tight up all lines in the evening when the moisture make the tent "hanging" and forget to loose them in the morning. When the sun dries up the tent during the day it will cause major stress on all stichings. All Hilleberg tents have stiching that will swell with moisture and seal, but only to a sertain point... So for all tents with such stiching, (no matter what brand), it is important to untight the lines in the morning. I learned the hard way. 🤣

All i hear is leaks and severe condensation from hilleberg tents even with the seams sealed so I’ll stick with my vango banshee that doesn’t do any of this at a fraction of the price

Camped this exact spot almost 2 years ago. Part of a two night trip. First night I was on sca fell then worked my way over great gable and to here. Only stumbled on it as was looking for somewhere sheltered from the wind. Was a gorgeous evening but it turned through the night and it was raining and very windy in the morning. Still a great trip!

The stability of this tent is greatly improved by adding four additional guy lines. Simply add them to the already existing loops so that each pool can then be supported from two different directions. The weight gain is negligible but the benefits are great. I used lime coloured 2 mm Lawson Glowire. The contrasting colour makes it easier to sort out any potential tangles.
