A 4.4GHz i5 with 3200MHz DDR4 bandwidth can see performance move into Skylake quad-core territory. I was thinking of getting a Core i3 6100 and an affordable z170 (e.g. the Asrock Z170 Pro4S) or a cheaper h170 mb. If I keep the i3-6100 at stock speed (3.7 Ghz), would I be able to see any performance improvement with the z170 board and DDR4-2400 memory compared to the H170 and DDR4-2133 memory, or is it a waste of money to invest in the z170/DDR4-2400 if you don't OC the CPU?

I wish we could see this with Ivy Bridge and Haswell. Its always been a mistery what gaming performance benefits there is using 2400 Mhz DDR3 in a CPU OVerclocked scenario , compared VS slower ram.... and how that compares to stock speed with slower and faster memory on these NEWER games. Older games did not show much memory scaling at the time those CPU's released but apparently these newer games used by Digital Foundry do. The few tests out there were antiquated and not very thorough.

With my i5 2500K I noticed a really impressive FPS boost by switching from 1600MHz C10 (single channel) RAM to 2133MHz C9 (dual channel) RAM. Especially in scenes where there is a lot to draw.

IF you download a bios from overclocking.guide and never update, then it will still work, but I am in a strange situation. I have a z170 mobo and 8gb of 3200 mhz of RAM, but no CPU. Would this massive performance boost work with the i5 too?

As far as RAM goes, does the CAS timing have a noticeable impact or is it mostly just frequency?
+Samuel Nehls CAS timing can play a big role in overall performance if it outweighs the speed. Luckily with DDR4 latency isn't a big deal as it used to be with DDR3, the latency with DDR4 you will see increases with the speeds but it actually doesn't affect it negatively so you won't have much if anything to worry about at all with dDR4.

I recently sold the xbone to build a pc slighty better than a ps4. I took the hard drive, motherboard, and cpu from a different pc.
The cpu is an AMD fx 6300, I've already overclocked it.
I've been looking to go the intel route though, as I play cpu heavy games, and this processor isn't cutting it.
I don't have a whole lot of money to spend, so keep that in mind.
So what is the best motherboard and intel CPU for the money, that will give better performance than the 6300?

Depends on the ram you have and your motherboard. That might be the limit, or you might need to increase the volts. What type of ram and motherboard you do you have?
wonder if my 4790k @ 4.6GHz actually benefits from faster ram? I'm running 2400mhz ram.
my theory, though a longshot, is faster ram has the strongest effects on hyperthreads more-so than cores. You're results are consistent with others, and usually ram speeds benefit a cpu when it's under full 100% utilization. Hyperthreads are almost always 100% if anything uses them, and the i3 gains vs i5 gains on overclocked memory show some big leaps for I3. I may be wrong but is there some way of testing this theory?

So I'm trading in my laptop. My laptop has a quad core i-5 6300hq @ 2.30ghz with 16gb of ram and a Gtx 960m with 4gb of ram. It also has a 256gb ssd. It was $799 The laptop I'm getting is the same one but this one has an i-7 6700hq 6M cache and 3.50ghz. It also has a 1TB hybrid drive instead. It was $699. Will the i-7 mess up my gaming experience and would you have done it?

It's quite surprising that for like the first time ever RAM really does make a difference.
Digital Foundry knew about this for awhile now. They had uploaded videos like this a couple of times. It's just not many PC gamers are in the know.

+ytrezazerty1 Well technically 2666/CL13> 3200/CL16 from a performance index standpoint is better, but 3200CL16 DIMM chips themselves likely weren't binned that aggressively and better in a lot of cases. Also in the case of Skylake memory performance was better closer to 3200MHZ than 2133MHz or 4000MHz according to what Tweaktown's benchmark results suggests and kind of makes a bit of sense 3192MHz/CL12 =266MHz.

intel Locked the BC method of overclocking so this one is not working anymore
you can still manage to work arround it buy buying a z170 MB & downgrade your bios updates
But thats risky you might ruin your MB if you didn't do it correctly also if you succeed you will lose intel boost clock technology so your cpu will work at the full speed al the time

Hi can anyone help me i was playing Rise Of The Tomb raider normally then i got a windows 10 update and frame rate is really bad 15-25 FPS on a GTX 950 then when i check the ram says 3.9GB usable of 8.0GB

720p Lowest setting on most of the recent game with arround 20-30fps in the demanding ones, thats the best of what you can do with an igpu

Evan Medi they have to use the strongest card available for it to be applicable for everyone. the cpu sends frames to the gpu. this is showing the maximum cpu framerate attainable with that ram and cpu. you would get similar gains albeit at a lower graphics settings. especially with a low end card.

If your gpu couldn't get those framerate it won't matter if you have a extreme cpu at 5ghz with 3200 MHz ddr4 so it may not be relevant to you with a card like that

+MattyFez SSDs do not affect fps, they reduce loading times. Some people had some issues when playing GTA V on a 5400 rpm hdd, some textures were missing, for example you could be driving but you could not see the road

No, the H110 motherboards only allow for memory overclocking. I bought one of these boards in hopes of doing the sky oc, but it didn't work. I ended up getting an msi z170a pro on sale. Much better since you can adjust ram speeds and overclock non k cpus.

Actually I never understood why you have never every benchmarked AThlon x4 860K 2400Mhz or FX 6300/8320 with 2400Mhz against i3 4150/ i5 4460 with 1600Mhz.
Can you guys add minimum framerates? It's in my opinion the most important factor in most of these tests because that's what you will notice and jar you the most while playing.

You can overclock the k and you can't always overclock the non k
so is the i3 good for a person who wants to make rig that's around 400 to 600 bucks. while still being able to plays that have extraordinary graphics
+Pharese Jackson As an ITX owner with a i3-4370 and a 290X i would say yes. The only issue with i3's are games with high LOD/geometry which is very CPU intensive. I would usually have to lower that to either high or medium to keep a constant 60fps.
thanks so the i3 would be stress out more with cpu intensive games rather games that use more of the gpu ok well high or medium is still good I just want last at least 5 years before switching with i5.
+Pharese Jackson 5 years might be pushing it a bit. But yeah it's a great stop gap solution for a budget build if you plan on upgrading to an i7 in the future. Any well ported Console game is less CPU dependent than GPU. So you should be fine for 1080p 60fps (with med LOD/Geometry) until the end of this console gen.
ill probably upgrade to i5 way before then but another question I got to ask you what do you prefer as a gpu amd or nvidia

This i5-2400 is STILL going strong. Picked it up for £50 over 2 years ago. Still plays everything I throw at it with my shitty 3.5GB 970. The only problem I saw were minimum framerates were low in Crysis 3 (averages were fine) but who plays that shit game anyways?
Think I'll wait until Polaris is out before decided on where to go next.

In terms of what? Gameplay? I don't think so. I'd say Crysis 1 + 2 were around as boring as each other. Crysis Warhead was the only game I gave more than a few hours to, and even then I never wanted to finish the game.
FPS is my main genre too. Yet no Crysis game has ever drawn me in. I played them to benchmark my rig and I tried to get through them, but they are so fucking boring.

TheVanillatech The world wasn't ready for it,and because Cod dominated on consoles. At the time pc gamers were only into nerd games like WOW, Crysis 3 on consoles was sluggish and ugly blurry maps. Also maybe Crysis 2 lacked a single player mode. It's multiplayer mode is underrated like Homefront and Frontlines Fuel of War.

Please name me one third person game that looks as good as the new tomb raider. Consoles are more then just a low-end PCs, and it runs just fine on high-end hardware like 980ti. You're probably one of those guys who has no idea what a bad port is and just calls bad optimization on everything that doesn't run well on some low end pc that suppose to be more powerful the new consoles.

the only downside to this bench its that it doesnt really show you the real scenario performance cuz of the gpu

I cant believe people praise witcher for anything other than its story. it is a poor game at technical level.
Look at 3:08 and NPCs pop up and it is so terrible. People can't find their way around except on the straight carved pathway. If you stop your horse in the middle, they will keep bumping into you rather than going around it. Such misery.
