    Hello, I'm Ukrainian who also speaks Russian. And this is what was in those gold containers:
    At 9:50 eggplant caviar (spread).
    At 11:08 rice porridge with meat.
    At 12:15 stewed beef (real good if you mix it with any pasta).
    At 13:18 sauteed vegetables.

    HI Emmy!
    I have an old hard-time family recipe that is extremely simple if you want it for that series!
    It's name is "Agolette" (Ah-johl-et) The recipe here is for one.
    You need pieces of Stale Italian Bread or French Baugette (all my great-grandparents were able to afford at the time)
    One half of a yellow onion
    One egg
    Preparation is simple:
    Boil a pot of water with chopped up onion. salt is optional. Once at a rapid boil, Crack your egg into the water. Wait until the egg is poached to a soft or medium texture. Turn off the water. Pour Take out the egg, and place on top of the stale bread. using a soup ladle, pour the onions on top of the stale bread, softening it and creating a tasty onion broth. you can put black pepper on top to taste.

    • @osocanin8637
      @osocanin8637 6 лет назад +17

      S-0 Is your family Northern Italian? My grandparents were from Tuscany and Marche and we make something very similar. The bianco (white) version as you do (sometimes with a little grated Parmesan cheese) and another version with leftover tomato sauce diluted with water. The stale bread is added and allowed to soften up and sop up the sauce. Sometimes spinach or swiss chard is added with some grated cheese. We call this pane cott' -Cooked bread.

    • @S0Cuber

      S-0 maybe Emmy could make an entire episode with recipes that use stale bread? There's a lot. I'm Dutch and my family used to make bread porridge using stale bread, sugar and milk (you can add anise powder/seed if you have it).
      Edit: I have a recipe book from my region of the Netherlands with three different porridge recipes that I could easily translate (one uses normal bread, and two others call for more specific bread that might not be easy to find in the US)

    Quick Russian lesson for food:
    *сахар белый (sakhar belii) is sugar, white
    *перец (perets) is pepper. болгарский перец (bolgarskii perets) is literally Bulgarian pepper, which is the Russian name for capsicum or bell pepper
    *соль (sol) is salt.
    *сыр (seer) is cheese
    *яблоко (yabloko) is apples, but nouns change form for case and so on in Russian
    *икра (ikra) is literally caviar, but refers to pureéd vegetables like zucchini/courgette
    *каша рисовая (kasha risovya) rice porridge. Also made with buckwheat, wheat, or pearl barley. Fatty meat with the grain and lightly spiced.
    *говядина тушеная (govyadina tusheniya) is beef stew. Colloquially called "tushenka". первый класс (pervii klass) means first class/premium quality
    *рагу (ragu) is ragou
    *паштет печеночный (pashtyet pechtenochnii) is paté made from liver. In all likelihood, this will be pork with other bits of the pig like heart and brains as well as the liver.
    p.s. Your Uncle Gweilo can't speak Russian. Just picked up stuff from watching dozens of Russian language cooking videos.

    If you don't see a letter that looks like "i", the text is in Russian, not Ukrainian. Easy way for someone who does't have much familiarity with the language to spot the difference!

    • @lightbearer972

      I second this tip. I speak neither Ukrainian nor Russian, but I do have working knowledge of the Cyrillic alphabet. Ukrainian has a letter that looks like the Latin I, and the usual Russian equivalent looks like a backwards Latin N. Both letters make the sound of the I in "machine." Ukrainian uses the backwards N character for a sound that Russian represents with a letter that looks like a lowercase b joined to a lowercase l.

    The outer packaging may have been in Ukrainian dialect, but the contents were almost certainly in formal Russian. I suspect that ration was meant for some of their southern brigades. The puree is known as "vegetable caviar" and can be used as you did or made into a mug of soup. The much prized apple butter is often just squeezed directly into the mouth. The kasha starch was probably pearl barley. Finally, as you learned, the fuel tabs have a very unpleasant smell when they burn. Great job, Our Lovely!

    • @lizsweety3
      @lizsweety3 6 лет назад +7

      Rocky Raab the outer packaging is also in Russian. I paused it to read and you can see it’s from Moscow I believe

    • @laceywickersham8150
      @laceywickersham8150 6 лет назад +28

      Hi, I speak both Ukrainian and Russian. They use different Cyrillic alphabets. By that fact its obvious that the whole thing is in Russian. I don't really know what you mean by "Ukrainian dialect," Ukrainian is a different langauge (acutally much more simlar to Polish than Russian). Finally, Google isn't great at translating either Russian or Ukrainian into English, which is why it probably thought the ration was in Ukrainian.

As to that baby food one, it said eggplant caviar, I don't know if it's popular dish in the US, it has nothing to do with real caviar, but when you prepare it properly (it shouldn't be that baby-food-ish) it looks a bit like a caviar, because of eggplant's seeds. That cheese was cheese indeed, processed cheese. Stew was beef stew and the last one of the heated meals was ragout, and pate was with butter. Anyway, strange Google Translate didn't translated it from Russian, since it's most certainly Russian. Great video. :D

      I've tried 4 different US MREs so far (two of which I showed on my Rotten Shed channel), and you're right, they tend to taste "the same", and not good quality. Even British ration packs are filling up with the same US MRE stuff, and that is just awful!! Compare that to Lithuanian MREs though (the only other ration I've tried), it's night and day, the Lithuanian ones taste like food, still looks like dog food, but the flavours are so much nicer!!

    Hi Miss Emmy! What you have here is a Russian ration known as an "IRP" also known as a "ИРП" "Индивидуальный рацион питания" meaning essentially a individual food ration. This is a 24 hour ration. Other Russian "MREs" that you see are "ОРП" or "одноразовые рацион питания" which is an "ORP" and is translated loosely as a one-time use ration, they are a one meal ration as opposed to the 24-hour ration. Hope this helps.

    I wonder if the tomato 'stuff' was a soup base? It resembled concentrated tinned tomato soup and meant to be diluted a touch and drank/eaten.
    Further on in the video you probably could have combined the potato tin stuff for a veg soup.
    Fascinating

    • @TheUglydandy
      @TheUglydandy 6 лет назад +1

      It`s an eggplant puree/paste, trust me. Though I guess you can indeed make some kind of a nice soup out of it. Say, by mixing it with hot water and stewed beef.

    One piece of advice from this Ol' Marine is that when you hear up a metallic container w/food on an "esbit stove" to either "crack open" and/or open completely open your lid so that heat can escape so no explosions & also you can "stir" your ration portion.

    I have noticed watching the 6 or so mre channels I watch that many of the other countries, mainly northern, Russia, canada, Ukraine Poland etc, all seem to be fatty meat heavy. A lot more food and seem to be healthier than our mre. Also on the sugar i wonder if it's beet sugar ?

    • @ImpetuousPorkus
      @ImpetuousPorkus 6 лет назад +1

      A lot of European rations also seem to have pate in it too. But yeah, like Emmy said it was definitely the kind of fatty food that you need for a cold climate.

      Sometimes it can be tricky because for example Canadian rations have a lot of "made in US" packaging or foods.
      So since Belarus and Ukraine neighbor Russia -- that is always a possibility.
      But yeah it is for sure Russian

    • @angelofreak7
      @angelofreak7 6 лет назад

      ReptileMan 0912 very true. Also a lot of Slavic languages are very similar but also very different. So can make for a very confusing translation experience. Is one of the reasons why I cross reference Google Translate with some of the textbooks I have. Also the word Federation was mentioned which makes me think it was Russian however I don't know the date the MRE was made maybe it was manufactured during the time of the CIS? Who knows?

    • @angelofreak7
      @angelofreak7 6 лет назад

      ReptileMan 0912 also please correct me if I'm wrong but it seems from the research I got Ukraine was part of the Confederacy of independent states at one time so anything with this MRE is a possibility.

      Alessandra Bozzelli First of all, that's a really awful thing to ask to someone who's clearly an awesome momma taking care of her kids. Second, there are many reasons why that could happen. Accidental pregnancies, along with not believing in or wanting abortion. Sometimes, people just have patches of hard times. Lost jobs, unemployment, the loss of a person who is contributing to the family's income.
      There are a ton of reasons someone may have children and money problems. But those reasons are none of your business.

    Those translations made me laugh. "Qatar owl" and "horny" lol. The package address says it is from Moscow region of Russia, so therefore it is definitely in Russian. The little green pouch was adaptovit which is some kind of energy boost pouch. The tin with the weird yellow stuff is indeed a cheese spread. After that, you had apple jam. The next little package was Ikra iz baklazhanov (eggplant caviar) which is a traditional Russian eggplant spread. The "qatar owl" :P was actually rice pudding with beef, then you had beef stew, then you had the "horny" which actually said "ragu" with beef. The last package was pashtet which is a pate of meat and fat (not really sure what kind of meat). Hope that helps :)
