I live out on long island and frequent the city and tend to agree with the discourteous observation. You have to understand that when you walk past thousands of other people every day without really looking at faces and navigating through crowds, your regard for others as far as responsibility to be kind or a sense of community responsibility is passed onto others because you expect at least one out of the millions to give a crap. New York City in recent years has become dirty and overcrowded mainly because police here are instructed not to enforce certain laws to limit such things. They'll clean up the few streets that tourists frequent obviously but it's hard to take the subway without someone asking you to swipe for them to get in, or using a bathroom in Penn Station without finding someone sleeping on the floor, and even riding a bike without taxis or other rude people blocking bike lanes and double parking. I could go on forever about how the city's changed for the worse and it doesn't seems as if it'll get any better with the Mayor and Governor more focused on issues in other parts of the Nation. It'll always be a fun place to visit but the overall quality of living at a premium cost makes it a less than ideal place to live.
Why are people making cities seem horrible? Cities are great lots of opportunities. People don’t lose their humanities because of cities it’s culture and how your brought up.
I actually learned something with my economics degree, cities exist due to agglomeration of jobs that make housing and renting more expensive in those areas which results in the building be built into skyscrapers due to the lack of land in that area being able to be built, pushing out the city to less businesses and homes until the city hits a suburban neighborhood or farm land. At that point a new city would began at another distant with the same goal.
As a New Yorker who has friends in LA this is the perfect dichotomy. Someone from LA doesn’t like New York, someone from New York doesn’t like LA. There is a reason different places have different cultures. So I would take their comments from the perspective of someone who likes a more relaxed lifestyle, NYC definitely isn’t for everyone but neither is LA.
OMG there's nothing more miserable than a New Yorker in Los Angeles it's sad it's really sad! Jesus Christ people calm down you're not running for the subway when you're walking down sunset and Vine!!
The sense of community is quite bleak in many cities. For all our economic progress, people are overworked, financially and mentally stressed, and often conditioned to pursue material desires rather than social well-being. Also, cities have become highly specialized because careers have, and so forming meaningful relationships with people from different walks of life has become more elusive.
In many cities, not all of them. It's easier when you're college-aged, and it's definitely not the "down home hospitality" type of community. But with so many people around with different backgrounds, community elements develop in its own way. YMMV depending on the city
Maybe this guy is in flight or fight when he goes into the city. But the truth of living in NYC is way different. When you live there, you know. The energy of the city isn't just about being "motivated" either... I will say though that if you are doing the 9-5 grind in the city, taking the subway at 8 am with everyone else you feel worthless and it feels like a fucking drag.

I've only been to one city, Chicago. I'm from and have lived my entire life in the middle of nowhere. I thought Chicago was going to be amazing because of all the movies and TV shows. It was over crowded and smelled like sewage. I tried that pizza place everyone talks about, that lou malnatis it sucked serious ass. That was about eight years ago, I'll never leave the sticks again.
These comments are an example of the problem they speak on in the video. Most read the title and immediately associate it with cost of living. It has nothing to do with that.
I’m exactly like that guy with classrooms always sit in the back and at restaurants always find a spot against a corner or atleast with a view of everything but I love downtowns of any big city I’ve been in
I was in a Flying J’s Restaurant in Clear Lake Iowa back in the 90’s and from across the room I heard a lady say he’s choking. No one around him got up to help. I ran from across the room and did the Hymlick (spelling) maneuver on him. He was turning blue. After about ten yanks a piece of chicken came out. Other than the guys daughter no one said a word, they just stared and then went back to eating. Not that I was looking for praise, it’s just not how I pictured a moment like that to be. In the movies and stuff people clap and shit. It was just really quiet!
People in Philadelphia where I’m from, they’ll step over you bleeding to death and then yell at you after they passed that you got blood on their shoes. Center City is just as bad as the terrible areas in North or West Philly. People are indifferent to the pain/problems/feelings of others. I was on my block on 15th & Chestnut about 6 years ago wheeling in my chair to the pharmacy and a homeless guy stopped me in the middle of the sidewalk and tried to rob me and it happened in front of a sporting goods store with a security guard at the door watching it happen. I remember he just shrugged when I gave him the ‘how bout a little help’ look. Luckily I have a very strong upper body from pushing for decades and was able to dissuade him by a jab to his Adam’s apple as his head was literally in my lap going for my pockets. People passed by on their way home from work and could give a shit less. Made me sad because as a kid Philly wasn’t like that.
Cheap!? What fucking rock has this kid been living in? 🤣 Cities were cheap to live in 10,20,30 years ago, but not anymore lol because everyone who lived in the suburbs want to live a urbanized lifestyle now, it's "Trendy" 🙄... & well gentrification happens lol & tons of new housing developments to handle thee amount of new people moving in, but keep in mind renting would set you back $1k-5k a month (price depends on the type of housing of course) Edit: I listened to the whole thing lol ignore everything I said up there☝... The tittle of the video should've been " Why is human life so expendable in cities "
The title is a little misleading. I agree that people who live in the city tend to be more desensitized to the things that happen around them, especially to other people because of how tightly packed cities tend to be; but living in the city is so much more expensive even still then living in a less populated area. A tiny 1 room studio apartment in new york is 1k a month, much cheaper to live in the country honestly.
It all started because of access to water then it snowballed as soon as there was seaports that made possible fisheries and factories then the best places attracted more people and people looking for opportunities find opportunities where there are most of them. People outside the city can often move to the city but it's statistically rare to see people from the city moving to rural areas.
It does not pay to be a hero these days. A few examples I've heard of.. A guy hits his girlfriend in the bar another guy intervenes and punches the boyfriend. Cops are called, guy goes to jail dysfunctional co-dependent couple goes home. Guy breaks into home at 3 in the morning gets shot buy home owner, homeowner gets sued because the man did not have a weapon.
Nah, I'm in pure bliss in the city, it's amazing. The ambience and the noise and honks and trains and planes. It's centering to me. I love NY, Chicago, Jacksonvilke, and Miami. It's great. They are so unique, yes we belong in man made structures, we are domestic mammals. Why we are attracted, because of preference. Because of ease of work, and ease of travel. I stay in the city cause I don't like the outer limits, I meet some of the nicest and greatest people in the city, from cabs to homeless people and police, bouncers, and just friendly people downtown.

I believe he was coming from a primal sort of sense of danger & stress and not from a structural engineering angle. It seems somewhat plausible. Stress levels are higher in cities & the rate of anxiety disorders is much higher in urban environments when compared to rural environments.

Tbh the police are gonna take 5 min to arrive. Getting footage of an event can be critical. If I was about to get murdered calling the cops won't do shit, but if you film the killer's face...
I agree with his fight or flight theory about New York. That place will make you feel like nowhere else. You can actually *feel* New york. Anybody whos been there knows this.
Same in rome or ibiza, unique sensations...
I had this in Porto in Portugal. I had anxiety the whole time it wasn't a relaxing holiday. Amazing city though. Strange what can happen on holiday
I was born in New York and I know that's a bunch of gibberish
I've only been to one city, Chicago. I'm from and have lived my entire life in the middle of nowhere. I thought Chicago was going to be amazing because of all the movies and TV shows. It was over crowded and smelled like sewage. I tried that pizza place everyone talks about, that lou malnatis it sucked serious ass. That was about eight years ago, I'll never leave the sticks again.
I’m 100% in panic mode while walking in downtown San Diego. And that’s a small dt! New York sends me into complete panic attack.
San Diego is to cites what Pluto is to planets
It’s a mess!
Title should’ve been: “Why human life is so cheap in big cities”
"the Bystander effect"
We naturally cluster together. Early humans slept in piles like a lot of primates.
I don't think he meant cost of living. He's talking bout why is human life so cheap in cities
Ive lived in Brooklyn for 12 years and Ive only ever seen people take care of each other
NY is awesome, but its like nowhere else on earth. People who live in NY dont realize NY is basically like a mini country.
They will save you in a place where survival is truly a necessity
The city is competition. In the wild we used to depend on each other. Now neighbors are enemies.
Cheap!? What fucking rock has this kid been living in? 🤣
Cities were cheap to live in 10,20,30 years ago, but not anymore lol because everyone who lived in the suburbs want to live a urbanized lifestyle now, it's "Trendy" 🙄... & well gentrification happens lol & tons of new housing developments to handle thee amount of new people moving in, but keep in mind renting would set you back $1k-5k a month (price depends on the type of housing of course)
Edit: I listened to the whole thing lol ignore everything I said up there☝... The tittle of the video should've been " Why is human life so expendable in cities "
What city are they talking about??
Los Angeles: hold my beer
The title is a little misleading. I agree that people who live in the city tend to be more desensitized to the things that happen around them, especially to other people because of how tightly packed cities tend to be; but living in the city is so much more expensive even still then living in a less populated area. A tiny 1 room studio apartment in new york is 1k a month, much cheaper to live in the country honestly.
It all started because of access to water then it snowballed as soon as there was seaports that made possible fisheries and factories
then the best places attracted more people and people looking for opportunities find opportunities where there are most of them.
Someone on another video said Laird is a Will Forte character and my life will never be the same 😂😂😂
Massive groups of people naturally mean safety
Sounds like they just spent 6 minutes explaining the textbook definition of the bystander effect.
Fight or flight from seeing a building? Ok...
I identify as a skyscraper.
You love Jacksonville? Bruh, now I know you're living. Even Jax doesn't love Jax. It's dull as fuck
@@Zvijeruga Jax loves jax, clearly you haven't been to a Jags game or a concert or a nightclub downtown lol, it's amazing. It's a simplified city and the biggest city in the nation. It's got everything most people want. I wasn't born here but I grew up here, I love it to death. I work and live my life to the fullest, you look at my Instagram and tell me that some of the shots of the city I get aren't simply awesome, gems in the haystack, water, zoo...malls, restaurants.

LIFE
The most appropriate yet misleading title yet.
Joe "Women Be Shopping" Rogan
The title means: life is not valuable in the city. Not living in the city is cheap financially.
try living in new york and id like to see if that video title stays the same
They're not saying it's a cheap city to live in. Listen godammit before commenting.
Try watching the video.
i feel safer living in a small town, but no so small as i cant disappear in it
I agree with that. I can't stand being in town especially large towns with alot of people going every direction at once
Wait, hit a victim defending themself against an assault with a brick or car because he’s a male being attacked by a female?! Wtf?! I don’t really like the idea of a man hitting a woman, but surely the idea shouldn’t be accept being assaulted or else be assaulted MORE violently.
Ain’t no heart in the city.
Ain't no love in the heart of the city.
Whitesnake
since i saw joe dosent know where LA is on the map i cant anymore
They could fall over and hit you?? I don't think so mate.
Lmaooo what an idiot
Sean Chang Idiot - you are.
It's subconscious. You know it will never actually fall on you but the primal part of your brain still thinks that.
I believe he was coming from a primal sort of sense of danger & stress and not from a structural engineering angle. It seems somewhat plausible.
Stress levels are higher in cities & the rate of anxiety disorders is much higher in urban environments when compared to rural environments.
