As a Bartender in LA, I am asked if I want to be an actor on a daily basis. When I tell them, "No, I'm a 5th generation Bartender. This is MY career."
They look at me with both pity and disbelief.

So in a way LA is a “safespace” for people with that kind of artistic pursuit but it’s ironic and moronic that people essentially flip the switch and do the same back to people like you, but that’s how people are… very tribal

Exactly. The whole time, I was thinking "wait... he really believes this phenomenon is different from any corporate job interview, in any area of the country (or world for that matter), for the past several decades?"
On top of that, imagine choosing this particular industry (of acting/entertainment) where you're *constantly* applying for job-after-job...where you know beforehand that each job is *designed* to last a very limited amount of time...where you are forced to move on to the next gig. Um, yes, you tell your potential employers what you know they want to hear. It's not at all exclusive to L.A. or Hollywood.

Josh, can't tell if your reply was intended to be a rebuttal of my comment or not, but your first sentence is a reinforcement of my last paragraph, and the underlying point: acting/entertainment jobs don't last (and are that way by design), which is different from "normal" jobs. Yet even with normal, long-lasting career jobs, people (applicants) posture disingenuously to land the job. So of *course* the same is going to happen in a line of work where every job is fleeting by design.
As for your second sentence, that may or may not be true; I have no personal experience in that.

As a native Southern Californian who moved away from that area, but lived many decades there (the majority of my life, and I am 60), I strongly disagree with the idea that "Hollywood" drives the social vibe of Los Angeles. There are a lot of things that drive the social and business environment in SoCal, political corruption is chief among them. Joe Rogan has had a very limited range of experiences in SoCal, and that is clearly the case because he was NEVER part of working class SoCal in any context. Perhaps his argument MIGHT BE appropriate to the experiences of affluent transplants from other states, but I guarantee that's NOT the case for the average Angelino. Politics of identity, political corruption, and trying to survive one of the highest cost of living regions in the world is a lot more important than "Hollywood" to the pathos of the region.

People who are artists, who are called to it, whether they be actors, directors, writers, musicians, comics, etc. -- they're all crazy on some level, beyond normal people, because they have to be. No sane, intelligent person would choose this much misery to go through on a daily basis, against such astronomical odds, to make a living. But I think we can all agree that when art succeeds, it is all worth it. When you see a play or movie that resonates deeply with you, or read a book you greatly enjoy, hear a song you instantly connect with, or hear a joke that makes you fall out of your seat laughing, you appreciate all the suffering they endured for you.
