Heya zack. Yes it's called riding giants about the history of big wave surfing. From the teenagers who went and lived on the north shore of Hawaiian in the fiftys right up to laird pioneering tow in surfing. I believe it was made by stacy peralta the skate boarder who made a few great documentaries the other im aware of was dog town and the z boys about himself and the crew who helped popularize modern skateboarding styles in the seventies by skateing empty pools. Both are definitely worth a rewatch. Hope this was helpful buddy. Enjoy.
When I met Paul Chek he was able to tell me about a head injury I had years ago just by looking at me & without me having said anything about it. The man is a wizard & definitely on another level.
I’ll tell you why I agree with this. I recently started stretching my legs everyday when I wake up and go to sleep. Compared to before, whenever I play sports I don’t feel sore afterwards like I use to. It’s just about making it a daily habit is what he is saying.
To be fair, this is working for me and my brother since we started training. Im not saying that this is the right way, or that it works for everybody, but it works for us. The thought was, what if we were in nature and had no time to warm up, your body should be always ready. Go to the gym, start with lifting heavy, no injuries. Happy to see that we are not the only ones that are always ready.
Alex Birnou I'm hoping to get to this point with a new routine I started where I lift and exercise throughout the day and minimize my time being sedentary.
Man I'm not mad about what they said about mental health..Im sure some people will be. But man I take medication, exercise, go to therapy, and eat balanced. And it is a struggle for me to walk outside every morning because of my dumb anxious mind. All the medication does is simply help cope a little bit. Yall basically said depression and anxiety are only caused by lack of exercise and a healthy diet. That could be true in some cases.. but not all. There's a lot of people out there listening to your show right now who are probably in a very dark place and need medication. And I think it's dangerous that y'all are basically saying you're fat and lazy that's why you have anxiety or depression and that's the bottom line.. so someone might hear that and say okay I I trust Joe. So I'm not going to go to the doctor like I should and try to work out and eat better. And maybe they fail and it's their last straw and they do something drastic.. when you don't know what it's like to be in that deep dark head space I don't I don't think you should speak in absolutely certainty about the subject like y'all are. Maybe try and understand. Anyways that guy definitely looks exactly like Will Forte lol good podcast Joe ✌️⚡
Indiana Jones A lot of people think they’re depressed for no reason when in fact it’s environmental. A lot of people are depressed regardless of lifestyle. goddamn this man makes me realize how nonathletic I am, time to become a quasi pro kayaker and do some high speed baby seal saving contests or something, holy shit im lazy
All Laird has ever known is a high performance body and mind. As someone who has been a high level athlete, then got smacked with a laundry list of illnesses and symptoms that has kept me in pain, little energy, and completely destroyed my life, I can't listen to Laird without thinking, "Dude, your "strength" and "masculinity" is only there because of pure luck. Elite athlete, inspiring dude, I think he also invented S.U.P. Great to see him getting some exposure, I think he just wants all people to get out more and be healthy.
I get that exercise and dieting is the solution to depression in some cases which is why therapists usually suggest that before medication. It didn’t work for me after 6 months of consistent diet and exercise I got much worse and the medicine helped along with the exercise.

@@cbowman212 Of course, he wouldn't be on the JRE if his understanding of how things work was purely bro science. @@daniellim5137 Well I meant he understands the body on a deep and holistic level. I loved his take on inflammation, particularly. Definitely a unique view point, but it actually makes sense. I will say he was a bit incoherent about the nose breathing thing. I get that you should breath through your nose while sitting or walking, but if you're doing something physically intense you need more oxygen and trying to get it all through your nose sometimes just isn't possible. I've never heard of anyone being able increase their ability to get air through the nose.
@@cbowman212 It made perfect sense to me. I understood it as breathing through one's nose is restrictive hence why athletes train at high altitude resulting in increasing the tolerance for oxygen intake over a "longer period of time." He was focusing on the tolerance for oxygen and not immediate oxygen intake. Yes, the inflammation part was genius. Inflammation is a natural occurrence in the body through the process of healing hence using pain medication to subdue that inflammation would be counter productive. Love it.

Okay I really like this Laird guy. Particularly the breathing and not giving up even when old thing
Watch ‘Riding Giants.’
Not to mention he rides demonic 60 foot man eating waves...
3 years ago. I started standing outside in my briefs in winter for 5 mins at a time. I do it right before bed. Once you warm up while laying down. It feels like a calming relaxed opium feeling. It also soothes knots in my muscle fibers and takes inflammation away in my joints. Try it once... It works.

Where was producer Jaime?
check out his last book "liferider"...if you want surfing...check out his previous book "force of nature". Hes got tons of documentaries too...like "LAIRD" AND "RIDING GIANTS"
That's because he was busy selling Joe's viewers on shit he sells. Wave were his claim to fame he should have at least mentioned riding.
They were assuming that everyone knows that.
It happens sometimes. I was so looking forward to Rich Roll episode but then they didn't even talk about ultra running. That was a bummer :D
props to you Joe for getting Laird Hamilton on the podcast this guys surfing career is insane.

When I was picking up surfing when living on Oahu in the late 90’s and early 2000’s everyone was just calling Laird, “Lord Hamilton “. He is just on another level of intensity. Pretty inspirational.

Tony Hawk just mentioned surfing with him and I somehow missed this one.
Next time talk more on his history in surfing he's one of the greats and it was so lightly toughed on! Loved this though.
Have you seen the documentary about big wave surfing riding giants. Fantastic well made. One of my favourites. That's where I first heard of Laird. Got so excited she Joe finally had him on. I'm actually rewatching this episode after hear tony and Joe talk about him the other day. What a beast.
@@geromelegnome5446 are you talking about the *slightly* older film with all the legends in it? I really think I did see that ages ago, that might be where I first heard of him as well!!!
Enjoy.

It’s important to understand the difference and it’s important that regardless of which kind of depression one has, focusing on your physical health can only be a good thing eventually.
@@EricGrotheJr Yes great point sir. Physical health can only be a good thing.. and Will help people who are feeling down and depressed.. but shouldn't be considered an absolute cure for mental health issues. Because there is no absolute cure.

This man might not be as scientifically equipped with his vocabulary as others Joe had on here, but all this bro science seems to intuitively make sense to me, Im with it!
Dave Park found myself thinking exactly that!
It's a little bit of bro-science but it's mixed in with logic and a deep understanding of how things work, too
@@cbowman212 Of course, he wouldn't be on the JRE if his understanding of how things work was purely bro science. Like all the good things in life, this man is well balanced in his understanding of the human body. Whether that balance is maintained through logic, experience, and science, it all seems to make sense through his bro sciency vibe.
Love it.
