Some years ago my Chinese Tai Chi instructor and I attended a Still Point Meditation seminar in my town. It involved a rapid connected breath. I had done it several times myself and would often fall into the "still point". There would be no breath for several minutes. You were not holding your breath but were completely relaxed. There were about 20 people at the seminar. Most achieved some level of the still point. My instructor kept lying there. Everybody was leaving but he was still there. He kept looking at his watch. He knew he was not breathing and wondered how long this would go on. He did not breath for 30 minutes.

awesome vid. let me just clarify that in freediving we don NOT teach hyperventilation as a preparation for the dive. In fact, we do the opposite. We teach RELAXATION, get the student as calm as possible to have to best possible experience under water. Hyperventilation was used in the early days of freedivingn, but not anymore. thanks
the abdominal thing is nauli, which is very difficult ! so good to hear breathwork being discussed here ! breathwork is a standard routine for pilates / yoga practitioners, dancers, singers, theatre actors... just like practising scales for a pianist : it doesn’t get any mention but it’s fundamental.
If you want to expand your energy - and increase both your mental and physical stamina to a noticably higher level, I most highly recommend you get the book, 'The Five Tibetans' ~ Christopher Kilham , and do the exercises and breathing as described. Its also part of a lot of other activities like yoga, meditation etc. Amazing part was with breath you change your chemical composition in your body and activate different parts of your brain and nervous system (parasympathetic on exhalation) . Breathing is not just about getting O2 into your body and exhaling CO2. There is the prana which is using the breath as a vehicle. Which is what that keeps you alive. The life force or Prana. Breathing is not just the physical..
Actually the feeling of light headedness comes from a form of O2 deprevation at a cellular level because CO2 has a function in O2 absorption, hyperventilating scrubs most of the CO2... (patrick mckeown oxygen advantage) but it's still beneficial to do breathwork, both for performance and emotional healing.
As far as i've heard from survival experts, the reason you get breath shock when jumping into ice cold water isn't to make you jump back out. It's to make you go unconscious as fast as possible. This way you won't drown, and it puts your body in a state to weather the lack of oxygen without suffering brain damage. Apparently, it's part of the reason people can fall through the ice go for an extended period before being revived without suffering any permanent brain damage.

Likely lack of oxygen that's causing the light headedness. With theres a lack of co2, oxygen flow is compromised and therefore less oxygen to vital locations like the brain.

yes that is a tibetan method. Only the Lamas (people who go under meditation retreat for a minimum of 3 years) demonstrate this. They demonstrate this to the public when they come out of meditation every three years. They wrap a white clothing( bed sheet blanket whatever) and by the time they reach the monastery in a line from the retreat centre early morning 5 am in the cold. The cloth is completely dry. They do this in tibetan monasteries all over Tibet, maybe nepal and Sikkim as well
Seems like a great guy, and has some interesting and valid points, but a lot of unsubstantiated or contradictory claims in throughout: 1 - Unless you have a serious cervical injury and associated phrenic nerve injury (C3-C5 or above C3) *you-re using your Diaphragm* . It really annoys me how people come out with these absolute claims. You might be using it MORE or LESS, but you're ALWAYS, involuntarily using your diaphragm. Unless you're in a hospital bed and hooked up to mechanical ventilation. 2 - If you're mainly using accessory breathing, you're still moving your ribs (less so, in general, ofc) and you're probably a sufferer of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), mostly with chronic emphysema (the "pink puffers"). Normally (no disease) you can use it a bit more when compared to diaphragmatic breath., but not more, overall. 3 - having six pack abs has a lot to do with body fat% and not directly to the ability to contract and relax the abdominal muscles (rectus, tranversus, oblique, etc) or having a high % of local muscle hypertrophy. Also, having a strong core SHOULD be emphasized. That means more strength and ability to control, contract and relax abdominal muscles, which will help with more diaphragmatic breathing. Altough I definitely agree that it should *not* be a gold standard for fitness and overall health and well being. He's on point on that. 4 - hyperventilating and associated respiratory alkalosis is a thing and can harm you, even if temporarily. Feeling lightheaded because "you're having more oxygen" doesn't mean it's inherently good at all times. Oxygen CAN be harmful. Oxydative stress ages you. Which is why it's probably not safe to take an oxygen tank and sip on it for 10 minutes. I'm extremely interested in breathing and breathing exercises and the wim hof method definitely perks up my curiosity, but it's still very understudied, if you're going to make absolute claims that go against the grain.
11:29 It's Nauli Kriya. All the kriyas are cleansing practices, this is one is for the visceral organs, but there are other for the nose(sinus) and eyes, for example. You can practice Uddiyana Bandha - it literally means 'flying upwards' - and any other of the bandhas first to get used to it. Pranayama means 'the breath of life' and so it refers to the breathing exercises. Great clip as always, thanks Joe.
Im sure we gonna adapt all the ancient hindu techniques which we previously disregarded and called non scientific bs and now that we find that those techniques are scientifically backed we gonna name them something else and sell it to the world lol
Breathing correctly makes cold showers easy. Take a deep breath in , then as u exhale go under the water, exhale as slow as u can. Then take a deep breath in again and exhale slowly. Breathe like that the entire time
This is similar or an offshoot or a watered down version to what we call Pranayama, the proper way practiced by Ancient Rishis/Yogis thousands of years back , it's best to learn from the source itself. The goal of Pranayama, which means to suspend the breath, is the practice of Kumbhaka or retention that's the essence breath retention it unties the granthis along the spine enabling kundalini to flow freely and slows down most metabolic processes especially the heart rate, which is how Yogis are able to live such long healthy lives.
You should get Jon Krakauer on the podcast. Aside from all his adventures and books he's definitely had some "breath work" type experiences like on Everest.
This algorithms is crazy. The last couple of days Before I going to bed I’ve been thinking about how my nostrils may be clogged up. Because when I breathe I feel like I’m not supplying enough air through my tubes. & thought about doing Win Hof’s breathing method. Then today BEFORE going to bed, this video pops up. Nothing said, just freaking THOUGHTS. WTF!
Tummo is not a breathing technique, is a sophisticated practice and increased body temperature is an external sign of internal achievement, but not the goal of this practice. The only similarity between Tummo and Wim Hof method is resistance for cold, breathing in tummo is different than Wim Hof method.
I've read books on different breathing techniques from Tibet and India. A lot of the techniques leave me feeling a bit strange after. The only thing I've done that helps is 5.5-6 breaths a minute. So basically 5 seconds in 5 seconds out. Belly breaths. Helps with a lot of things, especially stress and sometimes even inflammatory issues I have.
8 pack upgrade with oblique kit. Don't know if it's related at all, Just going to suggest: "Bare Foot Running" As a matter of there being no coincidence's ;)
Learn a little bit of Yoga-Aasanam (poses), try to become more flexible in that area, change food habits, use affirmations, do some more breathing practices etc. I can help you if you want.
Did gymnastics for years. Was ripped and could run 6+ min miles. ..... Not anymore but breathing is huge , helps with controlling the rythem of the body.
Sadly, I overdid it with the wim Hoff breathing and ended up deaf in my left ear and 4 years of intrusive tinnitus, based on the hearing loss... I did too many free dives in one 3 hour session, and went to deep, too often with the ability to hold my breath for over 6 mins and 4 mins at 30meters deep... I became interested in freediving when I discovered wim Hoff, and indirectly, it lead to my injury.
How tf do you overdue the wim hoff technique/breathing. You lost hearing because you were irresponsible and dove too much, you are blaming the wim hoff breathing for your mistake(s).
Okinawan Goju Ryu Karate masters are the perfect example of what he is explaining here. Goju Ryu has strong breathing technique element to the Art. And they all mostly have pot belly's. No 6 pack abs on these men. But the core is strong as an oak tree.
Wim Hof, Laird Hamilton, David goggins, Jordan Peterson, dozens of physicist ,doctors scientists from every discipline, fighters from every discipline, sports people from every sport! They're simply not a better talk show than this one. Never have I learned so much!
I've heard a few years ago that humans thought themselves to breathe the opposite way than they're are supposed to. As You breathe in you should pull your stomach muscles inwards so you get a massaging action in your pelvic region, and you push your stomach outwards when exhaling. Buddhist monks use that technique to maximize the energy flow.

Breathing correctly makes cold showers easy. Take a deep breath in , then as u exhale go under the water, exhale as slow as u can. Then take a deep breath in again and exhale slowly. Breathe like that the entire time
This is actually so helpful
I can attest this stuff does work, stress levels were crazy high during the height of the quarantine and now I’ve never felt better
Breathework convo starts at 6:29
Thank fuck
This dude ranted for five mins straight about stopping to take a breath
Mike Postalakis must be important

Yer. Bogus.
0:51 perfect translation thanks for clearing that one up
This is similar or an offshoot or a watered down version to what we call Pranayama, the proper way practiced by Ancient Rishis/Yogis thousands of years back , it's best to learn from the source itself.
11:30, that organ massage is called Nauli. good stuff
He looks like a perfect mashup between Sting and David Lee Roth
I would say Henry Rollins and DLR morphed into one.
I was thinking he’s a bit like DLR without the long hair and canned one-liners.
Uddiyana Bandha 11:40 It's a great exercise for longevity!
Always love these. Learn something about my body every time. Thx fellas
WTF!
I get that a lot too... makes me wonder what's going on at times
Yes, without holding breath, we can learn simple practices. I have a digital program on proper breathing.
One of tai chi aspects is breathing through the nose calmy and deeply and with an awareness
This guy can hold breath for 13 minutes straight
I've done 10 minutes no worry I don't expect belief
i do my own breath work before i take dabs.
Dreadpirate Blackfoot I do mine while I'm smoking. ☺️
On god lmao
I have a 6 pack and also do breathing exercises everyday, now I'm concerned about what my next course of action should be.
8 pack upgrade with oblique kit.
Don't know if it's related at all,
Just going to suggest:
"Bare Foot Running"
As a matter of there being no coincidence's ;)
Learn a little bit of Yoga-Aasanam (poses), try to become more flexible in that area, change food habits, use affirmations, do some more breathing practices etc. I can help you if you want.
Posture
DMT
Laird Hamilton studied under Paul Chek!! Get Paul Chek in there!
Jonny Perez would be epic !!
"I've done Wim for 4-5 years now"
Did gymnastics for years. Was ripped and could run 6+ min miles. ..... Not anymore but breathing is huge , helps with controlling the rythem of the body.
shooth100 breathing is everything, it’s the last thing to go
Tummo is not just a himalayan breathing technic, it is a system of meditation in tibetan buddhism
I learned this breathing method in Qigong....
Joe “just breathe man” Rogan
I loved this bit, thank you for posting it. I didn't know anything about Tummo Breathing/Meditation. Thank you thank you thank you!
My wife often says my breath needs work.....
I'm sorry to hear that. Thank you for the warning
It was not win hof it was free diving!
How tf do you overdue the wim hoff technique/breathing. You lost hearing because you were irresponsible and dove too much, you are blaming the wim hoff breathing for your mistake(s).
Man I didn't know free diving was part of the wim hof method
Okinawan Goju Ryu Karate masters are the perfect example of what he is explaining here. Goju Ryu has strong breathing technique element to the Art. And they all mostly have pot belly's. No 6 pack abs on these men. But the core is strong as an oak tree.
This has probably already been said, but the woman Laird refers to is Belissa Vranich and the book is Breathe.
“There’s a lot of people not breathing” yeah bro they are dead
Sloppy Jo I think he’s referring to people who take shallow breaths which leads to anxiety and other health problems.
Sloppy jo doesn't get it.

@@apatheticallylethargic4639 nah. He doesnt get it...
All I got from this was that there is always another twist to the pretzel
No Joe .. Rickson knows Laird.
This guy is a real life Captain America.
55 yrs old.
