I have. Really changes your perspective as you look at green trees and feel the breeze. Or maybe you’re just glad to be not breathing so hard anymore and that relaxes you.
I did a dmt breathing technique that was about 20 minutes long, my body got this vibrating sensation and my fingers curled almost uncontrollable, it felt as if my hands were being forced closed and lifted away from my body, my hands literally started to elevate against my will it was honestly crazy I didn't hallucinate or anything but I had a physical reaction to this technique ngl, at the end I was able to not breath for 3 and a half minutes, normally I can hold my breath for no longer than 40 seconds
The uncontrollable muscle contractions in the extremities is hyperventilation tetany, which results from blood CO2 from dropping too low. This can be avoided by focusing only on full inhalations but not forcing the exhalations, just letting go. I'm just a random guy online, but you can verify the info. Best wishes to you.
The same thing happened to me during a reiki class, we just finished rigorous breath work and I was lying down. I couldn't believe what was happening to me - I was disappointed that my instructor didn't know what was happening to me, she just kneeled next to me and stroked my arm until it passed.
Highly relatable. Once I hit abt my 3rd session(3rd breath hold) on wymhoff method, I berly hold my breath for a min normally for one. I reached 3:42 second b4 tho, actually blew my mind couldn't kmagine doing that normally and it's all natural. Plus the hand closing is from basically suffocation m, guy above said it better, also experienced but from wymhoff method. My fingers curled all the way in then my wrist started to curl in it was so odd and unresistable without ruining the breath work not that I rlly tried to resist. But I also experience like such a strong idk sharp or burning feeling in the tip of my nose that'll spread throughout my dance, I wanna say relatable to the hand feeling but idk. Kinda scary and never fully went through cuase by then I'm literally struggling to hold no breath any longer and don't wanna pass out or sum😅
I got up to 6.5 minutes using david blaines breathing technique. My arms and fingers don't curl up tho, they become straight and hard to move. The tingling is the part I hate the most, makes it almost unbearable at times.
There are two things that breathing does. Not only does it take in O2 but it also releases CO2. Breathing quickly like that lowers your CO2 pretty quickly. You can have a respiratory alkalosis which is a Ph imbalance in your blood and that DOES affect people neurological. This is old info.
Wim Hoff technique for breathing, for me, is like creating a wave in your torso. This happens by breathing deep, and slowly into your stomach, then lungs, then fill the sinus. Slowly controlling your out breath. Then an icy cold shower to start your day. Those showers will teach you how to breath really fast!
I did the Stan Groff holotropic breathwork workshop weekends twice and I totally tripped! It was like an entheogenic experience without the come down. I highly recommend
Clinically holotropic is very healing and much removal of symptoms occurs whether you have elucidated the science or not. Statistically patients get better . It is unfair to put this down simply because you haven't figured the mechanism of action ! Holotropic is clinically very very valuable and effective
I’ve done holotropic breath works before with supposedly the most renowned company that specializes in holotropic breath works. The way he showed joe how to do the breathing was very wrong and you don’t just breath crazy however you want. I’m pretty dang sure that dude was at a bunk companies workshop. I did this almost 10 years ago and we practiced the correct breathing technique for 2 days before the actual event and it was for an hour and a half. Everyone who was doing the proper breathing technique literally passed out around 45 minutes to an hour. I had also practiced mindful breathing meditations multiple times a day for almost Three months before doing the workshop. The reason that guy didn’t feel anything was because he wasn’t doing it properly. Me and all the other people that did it were so extremely physically and mentally exhausted that we slept almost the whole next 2 or three days only getting up to eat huge meals and pass back out. I had never been so damn sore and tired and so god damn hungry in my whole entire life all because of doing the holotropic breath works. And when I did it I had a pretty damn profound experience where I went through every emotion feeling them in the most extreme way and relives every event In my life attached to those emotions. It was Intense. Someone in my group had started crying nonstop and rocking back and forth in the fetal position. One person said they felt nothing and he had passed out after about 15-20 minutes of half ass breathing and then his breathing turned into an almost perfect technique and very intense and he was rocking back and forth kind of moaning weirdly for another 30 minutes, he didn’t remember anything. Shit is crazy just find a good School that doesn’t say just breath hella heavy how ever you want.
What you described doesn't say anything really. People rocking back and forth can be interpreted in many ways... Sounds like your body was in extreme exhaustion if you had to sleep and eat for 2/3 days after - seems like it was just intense fight+flight followed by intense rest/recover.
im tried the wim hof method where you do deep breathing in harder than you breath out 40x and then hold your breath for as long as you can. Even that feels excessive and exhausting and I don't feel anything but a little light headedness. It usually takes a little less than 5 minutes I believe. I need to do it next time for 10-15 minutes.
The fact that Joe for a moment thought that a guy turned into an actual wolf as a result of holotropic breathing makes me love him so much more lol 😆😆😆
Just doing a few minutes of it - not fast, controlled abdominal, longer out-breath. Puts me in a chilled out zone for a good 2hrs with heart rate down to 44bpm
I like how he actually acknowledges that the guy might have turn into a wolf even though it sounds to ridiculous, because that's the scientific method, lots of explanations are possible until we figure out what is actually happening
That is a very interesting experience. While I was hospitalized during my delivery, I hallucinated. I have always been curious about the physiological explanation for what happened...
I have no idea but maybe look up the book Spiritual Emergency by Stan Grof. His wife had a profound Spiritual experience around the time of giving birth.
The Holotropic as presented sounds weird. Hyperventilating is a studied phenomena that seems to be a relative of these techniques. As a runner and a cyclist I practice what I call conscious breathing which is simply just paying attention. I practice drawing stronger even full breaths. The rhythm of breathing is extremely important. Paying attention helps me tremendously. Also I have noticed that running outside away from traffic and noise in relative seclusion is extremely beneficial.
I have done this many times when I was a teenager. My pupils would swell to all black, my body hair would stand up, I would salivate profusely, I could roar, adrenaline would kick in, I could run around on all fours and do hand stands. Shits real. The police were sure that I was on drugs and had to run blood tests. No drugs. I loved it and miss it. But I'm an adult now and I'm trying my best to be normal.
I might believe the guy really felt like he was a wolf because one time when I was younger I had a huge solo shroom experience and part of that experience I felt like I actually became a dinosaur, very hard to explain but if you've had something similar happen you kinda know how those experiences go...
The book is great. I've been doing Hoff for a long while. Amazing to be able to hold breath for 3minutes and to have that sense of calm. Hoff mixed with tolle teachings and you can't go wrong inwardly.
The wolf story reminds of a book called Wild Animus about a guy who thinks he becomes a mountain goat and jumps into a volcano. This random hippy lady gave it to me at Warped Tour in Bozeman when I was in high school
Not sure what he did but his description of holotropic ceremony is fairly different from my experience. Ive done several ceremonies with different groups and they definitely did not say “breathe however you want”. There is a clearly laid out technique to optimize the experience. There was great tribal music that takes you on a journey but if you tend to judge tribal music from other cultures as “woohoo” then you will miss out. Sounds like he got new age keyboard sounds which would be a bummer. Also the leadership checked in with people in various ways which deepened the effects a great deal.
Holotropic breathing sounds just like hyperventilating and all of the woozy mindfuck that comes with it. Try meditating to the point where you're breathing so shallow it almost feels like you stopped breathing. I did that once and it felt like floating in a sensory deprivation chamber. LIKE FLOATING INSIDE THE WOMB. Everything is numb, but it's not scary numb. The literal meaning of PEACE and TRANQUILITY. Never been able to do it again though. But when i did it I timed it, and when I got out of it it was 45mins later, but it felt like forever.
bro I've done that a few times but it scared me because I likened it to being actually dead as I almost or pretty much didn't feel anything in my body happening I wondered if I actually died and didn't like it so I stopped haha I meditated just now actually so I still do but those deep experiences can be seriously weird
@@vvelvettearss this is when you should look into affirmations, mantras and even visualization! They say it’s easier to accomplish tasks and make your reality blossom once you reach alpha brain wave state and imply those actions
Realize the difference between deep breathing and hyperventilation. You can breathe deeply but if you breathe too much you are hyperventilating. Deep, slow breathing is good for you. It is how a healthy person breaths, and they also breath from their belly not from their chest. Holotropics is a controlled hyperventilation and hyperventilating for 3 hours is pretty much not good for you. But it can alter your consciousness for sure. The way it works is from reducing oxygen in your brain. At least that is what you can gather from the studies done on hyperventilation. But its pretty much unknown what really happens during holotropics. Reduced oxygen happens but over 3 hours your body would have plenty time to react to this so we might not know until james nestor does his study about it
Since they brought up death metal, I want to say the idea is not as absurd as it sounds. I've induced some pretty intense states of mind while listening to death metal and working out. Particularly with running, where the intensity of the music allowed me to push beyond what my normal limits would be, and enter into an altered mind state. They're talking about breathing, I was at the point where I am breathing so hard I thought I was going to vomit, and then pass out from not being able to breathe or get enough air in. I dont do it often anddo not recommend it to anyone, its probably not safe, but I definetly related to that part of the discussion. Bands like Behemoth, Nile, and especially Gojira have helped get me there. Le Enfant Savage album in particular with songs like Pain is the Master, The Gift of Guilt, etc. The album is a work of art, and a powerful tool for me. I can't listen to it and not work out hard. It drives you. I can't imagine how that would work sitting down and trying to breathe as hard as you can, but the idea of using death metal and breathwork to access altered states is something I've experienced. Doesnt take 3 hours either, I'm talking running 1-2 miles as fast as you possibly can. That was all I needed, but I am not a marathon runner, I was a sprinter did 100 meter in HS. So for me 2 miles is alot, but I think the key is max BPM in the music and in your heart for just slightly longer than your comfort zone dictates. Thats where the death metal helps. It just empowers you and helps induce and transcendant state of mind.
Back in the 80s they called this rebirthing. I was able to not breathe for a couple minutes, but I've seen people go six or seven minutes without breathing. It's pretty trippy. I witnessed many emotional releases. We didn't do it with obnoxious loud music though.
I have a feeling James said that coz he indeed haven’t tried psychedelics/haven’t experienced any profound altered states while on psychedelics so he didn’t want to lie
"What kind of music was it?" "That's something i wish they could've worked on a little bit.." "Death metal?" ".I wish.." This conversation is friggin hilarious 🤣🤣
I just did three sets of breathing and all of my senses are so much more powerful, my mood is improved, my body feels great... I've done these breathing exercises several times but I don't know why I keep doing it for a day or even a week but not keeping it up
James Nestor is somewhat talking from his behind in this. Stan Grof wasn't "one of the first test subjects of LSD"; he was a young psychiatry student doing research on subjects taking LSD. You can learn actual information by watching his documentary "The Way of the Psychonaut", reading his book titled the same, or go to the training Grof Transpersonal Training or Grof Legacy Training.
You get into hard-core yoga and you'll have meditation experiences that are way beyond any drug or Yada Yada. It's all within your inner realm which is the inner realm of all people... that leads to the Self .... which is God. Been there done that. Way beyond amazing.
Breathing deeply and quickly (Wim Hoff) decreases circulatory CO2 by breathing out CO2 from the lungs. This causes a state of alkalosis and alkalemia. Alkalemia (elevated blood pH) generally has a vasodilatory effect on blood vessels in the human body. Specifically: 1. Alkalosis causes vasodilation, especially in the pulmonary circulation. Studies have shown that acute alkalosis induces pulmonary vasodilation 2. In the systemic circulation, alkalosis tends to cause vasodilation as well, though the effects can vary depending on the specific vascular bed 3. The vasodilatory effect of alkalosis is often mediated through nitric oxide (NO) signaling pathways in the vascular endothelium 4. Alkalosis-induced vasodilation appears to be more pronounced in arteries compared to veins 5. The vasodilatory response to alkalosis can differ between species and vascular beds. For example, some studies found NO mediates alkalosis-induced dilation in piglet pulmonary vessels but not in rabbit or rat lungs It's worth noting that while the acute effect of alkalemia is generally vasodilatory, prolonged or severe alkalosis can have more complex effects on the vasculature and may impair the normal regulation of vascular tone Additionally, the body has compensatory mechanisms that can modify the vascular response to chronic pH changes. However, in most acute situations, alkalemia promotes vasodilation rather than vasoconstriction. Alkalosis causes vasoconstriction in the brain, reducing blood flow, causing dizziness and euphoria

I can imagine that someone may feel as if they're in a psychedelic state. Have you ever tried to blow up a pool float with your mouth and got dizzy?

Welcome to hyperventilating lol

For the most part you’re just visualizing your breathing right? It doesn’t slowly go into your stomach?

How
Sounds dangerous
Clinically holotropic is very healing and much removal of symptoms occurs whether you have elucidated the science or not. Statistically patients get better . It is unfair to put this down simply because you haven't figured the mechanism of action ! Holotropic is clinically very very valuable and effective
I myself am not interested at all in the mechanism of action. I am interested in whether it works, done properly and patiently. Yes to those.
As a drug user, DMT (and holotropic) breathing are sometimes enough to calm your nerves.
Our bodies are drug-making factories after all
“I went outside and drank a beer in my car..y’know”......bro what??
Shit is crazy just find a good
School that doesn’t say just breath hella heavy how ever you want.
This sounds scary!
What you described doesn't say anything really. People rocking back and forth can be interpreted in many ways... Sounds like your body was in extreme exhaustion if you had to sleep and eat for 2/3 days after - seems like it was just intense fight+flight followed by intense rest/recover.
Im so lazy even breathing like that for an hour seems exhausting
im tried the wim hof method where you do deep breathing in harder than you breath out 40x and then hold your breath for as long as you can. Even that feels excessive and exhausting and I don't feel anything but a little light headedness. It usually takes a little less than 5 minutes I believe. I need to do it next time for 10-15 minutes.
zeffery Wim recommends doing atleast 3 rounds

Ive had a DMT like experience with breathwork. It's possible. Youve gotta be committed to the process and don't be afraid.
After I had my first baby, I went home and had an out of body experience. I always wondered if it was because of the deep breathing!
Carl Jung would use “active imagination” to achieve visionary experiences. I wonder how similar these experiences are to that.
Very similar. It boils down to trance states, and there are many ways to enter.

But when i did it I timed it, and when I got out of it it was 45mins later, but it felt like forever.
bro I've done that a few times but it scared me because I likened it to being actually dead as I almost or pretty much didn't feel anything in my body happening I wondered if I actually died and didn't like it so I stopped haha
I meditated just now actually so I still do but those deep experiences can be seriously weird

Deep breathing exercises help prevent Pneumonia..Boom There you go..You’re welcome🙌
Drowning prevents pneumonia too. Once you drown you will never get ANY disease ever again.
Yep! We teach this to patients in the hospital. We have a little gadget called incentive spirometry to cue patients to breath in deeply.
Yours is the comment that will actually get me started
Tom Hines: good point but that’s mouth breathing.
Reduced oxygen happens but over 3 hours your body would have plenty time to react to this so we might not know until james nestor does his study about it
I love this man 😄. Seriously though I hope my son loves and respects me that much when hes an adult. Too sweet

Specifically:
1. Alkalosis causes vasodilation, especially in the pulmonary circulation. Studies have shown that acute alkalosis induces pulmonary vasodilation
2. In the systemic circulation, alkalosis tends to cause vasodilation as well, though the effects can vary depending on the specific vascular bed
3. The vasodilatory effect of alkalosis is often mediated through nitric oxide (NO) signaling pathways in the vascular endothelium
4. Alkalosis-induced vasodilation appears to be more pronounced in arteries compared to veins
5. The vasodilatory response to alkalosis can differ between species and vascular beds. For example, some studies found NO mediates alkalosis-induced dilation in piglet pulmonary vessels but not in rabbit or rat lungs
It's worth noting that while the acute effect of alkalemia is generally vasodilatory, prolonged or severe alkalosis can have more complex effects on the vasculature and may impair the normal regulation of vascular tone
Additionally, the body has compensatory mechanisms that can modify the vascular response to chronic pH changes. However, in most acute situations, alkalemia promotes vasodilation rather than vasoconstriction.
Alkalosis causes vasoconstriction in the brain, reducing blood flow, causing dizziness and euphoria
Breath = Spirit
